WIDESCREEN MOTION PROJECT NOT WIDESCREEN IN FINDER PREVIEW (HENCE IN DVDSP)

Howdy folks,
This seems like an easy one but I haven't been able to figure it out after a long time of trying and internet searching.
I have a Motion project with the following "project properties":- Preset: 1080i50; Width 1440; Height: 1080; Pixel aspect ratio: (HD 960*720, 1440*1080).
This is a widesreen project and looks so in the Motion canvas window. However, when I find the file in Finder and click on it once to get the little preview, it is not in widescreen and in fact looks distorted to my eye (squashed).
I get the same playback if I open the file using Quicktime. More pertinently, I get the same plackback when I import the file directly into DVD Studio Pro, which is what I want to do.
I hope you folks can help.
Cheers,
Grateful Bob

On my system, a Motion project @ 1440x1080 plays back thin in the Finder but correctly in DVD SP. If it's wrong in DVD SP, make it into a Track, then force that Track to be 16:9 Letterbox with the Inspector. This will only apply to an HD-DVD, of course; for SD you'll need to be downconverting.
In SD, the problem is slightly different (and this applies to the other poster here): you want to tick the "anamorphic" checkbox in the FCP browser to make sure your assets are interpreted correctly.
The behind-the-scenes 1440x1080-to-1920x1080 trickery that many codecs use is very much like the anamorphic trickery in SD, but we don't need to know much about it because all the HD resolutions should be interpreted as 16:9.

The contents of all types of appleworks documents do not appear in finder preview, quick look or cover flow on both of my computers. The generic AWKS logo appears.
Why does this happen and what can be done to correct this?
I have repaired permissions a number of times and have restarted the computer.

AppleWorks 6 was written before OS X & long before Leopard & Quick Look. There hasn't even been an update since January 2004. The ability to create the image for Quick Look likely will never happen.

I'm not sure Appleworks files are supported in any form of preview. Appleworks was killed long before any of the preview functions were developed, so I don't suppose its file types were included.
Quicklook has a plugin architecture, so perhaps some programmer that likes Appleworks will create a plugin for it.

  • Motion Project Not Working In FCP

    Here's what happens:
In FCP, I send a clip on the timeline to Motion. After I'm done with it in Motion, I save the project file and quit Motion. When I go back to FCP, the Motion project file in the timeline is unrendered (like it should be). If I put the playhead over the clip, I can see a frame from it, but when I render it, all that plays is black. Any idea why it does that? I end up having to export the video from Motion and import it into FCP, which is a real pain.
    Specs:
    Motion 3
    FCP 6
MacBook (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.5GB RAM)
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
Sorry if this should be posted in the FCP forum. I figured the problem is associated with Motion.

I still hold the opinion that when trying to use an unsupported hardware/software configuration, problems will arise. From the Final Cut Studio 2 Tech Specs page:
An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors)
While some things may work, your configuration is not officially supported. It seems that you've already discovered a work-around for your situation by exporting directly out of Motion. In my limited experience with Motion, particle generators require a lot of processing power, in this case, a hefty graphics card. Even with our ATI x1900s at work, adding particle generators can really bog that card down.

  • MP3's do not play in finder (preview)

For some reason I cant the preview feature does not work for Mp3 files in Finder. Instead, the file shows up as a quicktime icon and clicking on it launches quicktime. I do not see the play bar anymore.
Any idea what I need to do so that I can listen to an audio file in preview? Thanks!

I get the same thing and what I do is, let's say, I'm in column view and I have a folder with mp3's, I highlight one and see the itunes icon, I then switch to cover flow view and press the space bar for quick look and the song begins to play. you can highlight the file in column view and press the space bar for quick look also.
as to why the different icon look? have no clue.
shame after 11 updates apple couldn't wring out the same bugs that 10.5.1 had, lol. just funnin.

  • Aperture projects not available to Finder - way to match Finder to Project structure?

Just transitioning from the dark side (PC) ... and don't fully understand this relationship.  I have all images organized in projects and want to have same folder structure in Finder.  Way to get there from here?

    No, there is not.
Aperture is an image-manager.  Finder is a file manager.  Images are not files.  Image containers are not file containers.
This is an important -- and difficult -- hurdle for users to clear in order to make the most of Aperture.
Read my short intro to Aperture.  It describes a little bit of this difference.
You have files made by your camera.  You import them into Aperture.  Aperture stores these files where you tell it to (or in the Library by default).  It never alters them (unless you tell it to).  And it creates an Image.  You develop your Images (make adjustments, in Aperture-speak), you add metadata, you create whatever organizational structures you want (Aperture excels at this) ... and then, when you need a _file_ to share with another person or to use in another program, you export your Image(s).  Export means "Make me image-format files from these selected Images".  And then you have files that show in your file manager, which in OS X is the Finder.
Between import and export, you don't have to worry about file management at all -- except to make sure you backup your Aperture Library and any Originals (the name Aperture gives to the file you import after you import them) that are stored outside your Library (Aperture calls these "Referenced Originals").

  • UIX 2.1.7 version project not working with 10G Preview

    Hello,
We have an application built using JDeveloper9.03 and UIX2.1.7. I tried to open the same application using JDeveloper10G and I could not open any of the UIX files. Even the migration fails. Any ideas about how to open and work on my UIX2.1.7 files with JDeveloper10g?
    Thanks.

    Hi Jeanne,
    Thanks for your reply.
It did prompt me to update the installables. And I said yes. But it failed to update the installables and threw a null pointer exception. When I tried to open my file, I can't even see the UIX code (the xml code). It only shows a gray screen.
    Thanks.

  • Convert motion project into title template

I started working on a motion project, not sure what template to use, so I created a standard motion project.  After working on the project for about 20 hours, I am now realizing that the title template would probably be the best option for this project even though I am not doing any actual titles.  I was able to convert the project to a video effect template, but this is not really what I want.  Is there some way to convert this project to a title template?  Even if I have to copy/paste everything over to a new project, that would be a lot better than redoing the 20 hours that I've already spent on this thing.  Since I can only have one project open at a time, I don't think copy/paste is even possible.

I think this will work for you.
-Select all the groups in your Motion project (or nest them in a single group.
-Drag the group(s) to the Library>Favorites.
-Create a new Final Cut title project with the same settings.
-Drag and Drop the group(s) from the Library>Favorites into the new Final Cut Title project.
    Save and enjoy.

  • Encore 2.0 motion menus not previewing?

I have been having some trouble with motion menus...I got a copy of Encore 2.0 several years ago and it worked fine then. I recently had a need for it again so I re-installed it and started a project.
My problem is that even with the video transcoded, added to the menu, and the motion menus rendered, it doesn't show up in the preview. I can hear the audio, but it doesn't show the video. After tinkering with this for a little bit I went ahead and burned a disc, thinking that my problem was just a preview issue. The finished disc also doesn't work. You hear the audio and the buttons and timelines work fine, but no motion menus.
I found a discussion on here a while back about changing registry entries (for when Encore gets hung up on importing) and I had a similar issue. I tried that and it worked. I wondered if something similar may be causing the motion menus not to work.
I should mention that I tried re-installing Encore with no such luck.
    Any ideas?

Awesome. I checked out the other thread, and I didn't find the solution directly, but somewhere they mentioned "layers" and I realized how ignorant I was. The background layer was turned on by default, so I couldn't see the video that was playing behind it. I just toggled it off and presto! The menu works.
    Thanks again.

  • Convert an existing 4:3 project to widescreen?

I have an existing, completed, 4:3 project which I want to convert to widescreen with the minimum effort (ie not start from scratch again).
I duplicated the iMovie project package then used MPEG Streamclip to convert all the DV files in the Media folder inside the package to pillarboxed 16:9. So all transitions, clips, effects etc, are preserved but just now pillarboxed.
But of course without changing anything else, the iMovie project shows this pillarboxed 16:9 as squished 4:3.
Is there any way of getting iMovie to change the existing project format to 16:9? I'm open to "hacking" files inside the package if that's what it takes.
(curious that iDVD offers this capability as a menu item!)

    Hi,
Your method doesn't quite work, but provided the sniff to solve it!
I created a new widescreen project, then placed all the clips in the Media folder from the Finder. But as you noted, the iMovie project file doesn't know about them, so they are put in the iMovie trash when you open the project.
Since I want to preserve the order of the clips (and my project also has timeline audio clips), the whole project needs to be recreated with all the media content relationships intact, but widescreen instead of 4:3.
Replacing the widescreen iMovie project file with the old one reinstates those relationships but also reinstates 4:3. That provided the clue!
Whether a project is widescreen or not must be a key in the iMovie project file, and sure enough, I found it:
    <key>videoStandard</key>
    <string>DV-PAL</string>
I edited the project file to say:
    <key>videoStandard</key>
    <string>DV-PAL-WIDE</string>
VOILA! The project now correctly opens as widescreen with all the original timeline and media relationships preseved. Brilliant!
Thanks for sending me on the right direction!

  • *** HD-DVD template for regular widescreen DVD project?

I have a sample of HDV projects that I have converted to .m2v in DVDSP in order to show on DVD. For now, I have to use a DVDSP template as the background menu. I'm not happy with how the menu looks on my widescreen LCD tv so I'm wondering if it's possible to use one of the HD-DVD menu backgrounds even though the video content of m project is .m2v. Will this make the menu screen look better or will the DVD have problems loading in a regular DVD player?
    Thanks in advance!

The HD content is a different physical size and I would think that if DVDSP lets you import it as an asset, then it will certainly re-scale it for you to be a legal SD size.
You might be better doing this yourself and controlling the re-scaling more precisely... otherwise things could get ugly!

  • EyeTV exports to Apple TV are not widescreen?

I exported a film recorded using EyeTV to Apple TV for the first time today. The film played OK on my TV except that it was not wide screen and there were black borders either side of the picture. Is there a way to export widescreen, I could not find anything in the preferences?
    Thanks
    Tony

I am using 3.0.2 of EyeTV (3.0.3 was released today but I have not downloaded yet). Movies play OK within EyeTV, it is only after exporting that I see the problem. To export I simply click on the Apple TV icon on the EyeTV Programs window, are there any preferences on the export?
I have just looked at the movie in iTunes (ie exported from EyeTV) and it looks widescreen in iTunes. Problem seems to be the import into Apple TV? Apple TV does not seem to be showing this program correctly for some reason.

  • JPEGS not rendering correctly in Finder, Preview or Safari

    Need some quick help, guys.
Here's the symptom: JPEGs look lousy in the Finder, Preview, Safari, etc. Open them in Photoshop, and they look fine. Move the file to another computer, and it looks fine. It appears to me that any application that uses OS X to render to the JPEG is messing it up.
The files look like data is missing (e.g., 8 bit vs. 12 bit). Dark areas are banded.
Any clue what's not work, and how to fix, short of a new OS install, which I really want to avoid?

One of the causes of some images to appear poor, can be due
to an application used to view them, may be finding the smaller
thumbnail or reduced quality image, and showing you that one.
Sometimes, iPhoto or another image app will show a smaller
resolution image because there is also one of them available
in addition to the original larger resolution image. Or, in a few
other cases, an original may have been removed but a small
thumbnail or other file remains behind; a lesser vestige.
From other incidental exposure to this issue in other forums
over the past year or so, I have an idea that PhotoShop or
another pro app may have its own image archive to draw from.
Or it can see the correct larger image file, and avoid any small
resolution duplicate stored in iPhoto or another archive location.
Probably it would not be a good idea to re-install the OS X
since that would not necessarily fix the underlying cause
& it could return again; with little learned about how to fix it.
I've read about this kind of issue; but since I do not use
iPhoto (yet have a fairly good version of it, updated) this
problem is one I have never experienced in any Mac.
Perhaps a search of the Discussions archives or online
user forums via a google or other search engine, may
yield comparable issues and possible answers to them.
And, there is a fair chance that someone frequenting these
forum Discussions can point you to the exact cause of this.
I could find the most probable causes by doing a few searches
and likely get the correct matching results in about 15 minutes.
But it is time to consider sleep now.
For this issue, I would not reinstall the OS X; as that would
then require updating many apps, system steps, security
updates, java, quicktime, flash/shockwave, browsers, etc.
Unless you have a healthy clone you could clone back in
which pre-dated the emergence of this issue; a bootable
clone on an external enclosed hard disk drive. I have those.
Sometimes, iPhoto or other apps using images stored or
handled by such an image editing app, provide a lesser
quality resolution duplicate, and if I weren't so tired, I'd look
into where I think I read about this issue, within the past year.
Hopefully a frequent flier can recollect the correct path...
    Good luck & happy computing!
PS: a quick search online of these words:
*Mac OS X jpg images poor quality* is
    recommended; there are several results
of which some are likely candidates.

  • Moive plays in Finder preview, but not in Quicktime

Have several movies made using a REALBasic QT plugin. Most of the movies are fine, but a few refuse to play in QT. Double clicking causes a 10-second delay, after which the player opens with the controls (and it's playing) but there's no image area. However, the movie plays fine in the Finder preview.
I've tried using QT to export the bad movie, but QT hangs.
Any ideas on how to extract or repair the movie?

    It played for me but...
A couple of issues you should address.

  • Motion Project does not look good in FCP

I am using FCP 5.0 and Motion2. I made a lower third title graphic in Motion. When I embed the clips back into FCP they look pixalated. They do not look as good as they did originally. Does anyone have a solution?

    Hey,
Here's the result from last night. The quicktime file is good. It seems that Motion projects in FCP, even from rendered QT files, don't display their true image.
My output this morning for my project is flawless. Even though the timeline looks horrible.
The reason this seems to come up in this forum again and again, is probably that Boris 3D, FCP's titles, even LiveType, all display their true clean rendered image in FCP. Motion, however, doesn't seem to do that.
My guess is that it hangs on to a thumbnail representation for FCP of the rough draught render that motion must create so you can place your motion project in your FCP timeline live. (you know, you can switch back and forth and update a motion project and it updates it in FCP. )
It just doesn't say that anywhere that I was looking.
So, if anyone else is creating Motion projects and importing them into Final Cut, be aware that what you see in Final Cut is not what is going to render in your output. It will be full resolution and without the alising that appears in FCP's timeline.
