Widescreen on iMovie

I have done something wrong when importing into iMovie. The original was recorded in 16:9 format, in iMovie I see clips in 4:3 format, "streched" vertically.
I do not have the original tape any more.
Is there a way to convert these clips back to 16:9 format?
Thanks,
Tonden

I have never managed to get Anamorphicizer to work (me too stupid I guess).
There is another way.
First go to http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?lang=english and download myDVDedit. This is shareware although the download is free. Send the guy a few dollars/euros, he deserves it. While you are there, read all about it. Now install it in your Applications Folder. You will need it later.
Now save your DVD project as a Disk Image on your desktop. Leave it there for the moment when it has finished/appeared.
Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but this aids identification.
Now double-click the disk image on your desktop. It contains two folders: AUDIO_TS (which is empty, but please pretend that it isn’t) and VIDEO_TS. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on ‘Apply to enclosed items’. You will be asked for your root password. Close the get info window, and now click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click te middle one (VTS or VMG).
In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2 (if it isn’t already)
Set Standard to PAL (or NTSC if that is what you want)
Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
Now save the file.
Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
Click on VTS Menu 2 and repeat as above.
You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!
If you have Toast 7 Titanium, open it. ‘Select DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS’. Choose Select from the main Toast window and select your projectname-TS Files folder. You are now ready to burn! You can set the burn speed (2x recommended) before the burn commences. Allow Toast to verify the burn before you eject the DVD-R disk.
If you don’t have Toast 7, then I assume you can burn the projectname-TS Files folder (disk image) via Disk Utility. I say ‘assume’ only because I have never tried it that way.
Either way, you now have a DVD which will play as 16:9 widescreen on any TV set, even the old ones where you can’t ask it to letter-box.

  • Widescreen in iMovie HD

    Hello,
I've created a movie for a real estate company involving only stills and transitions (just houses with prices ect) for a promo DVD to be played on widescreen televisions in cafes ect.
What i need to do, is convert the movie for 4:3 to 16:9 so the movie doesn't strech and become distorted while playing in 4:3 format on a widescreen TV.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    check the following:
    http://www.stupendous-software.com/
the colorbundle (color effects) has a free plug-in for 16:9. I hope it'll do what you need. These plug-ins are for intel machines but they probably exist also for G5 if your iMac has this chip.
    Good luck.

  • Widescreen from FCE to iMovie

How do I ensure that widescreen in FCE exports to widescreen in iMovie. The iMovie project is created as widescreen, but when I export from FCE which is also in widescreen it open in iMovie as a small rectangular box with a very large border of black.
    Thanks

What are the sequence settings & clip settings in your FCE sequence? You can check these in the FCE Browser.
How are you exporting from FCE? To QuickTime Movie ... or to QuickTime Conversion?
What versions of FCE and iMovie are you using?

  • Photos stretching in iMovie widescreen project since Leopard

    Hi All
Since upgrading to OSX 10.5, when inserting photos into a DV widescreen project, iMovie 6 is stretching the photos.
It has never done this before and have not changed any settings recently.
Any ideas what to check/or a fix?
    thanks

I have the similar effect after changing to Leopard. Actually, this is pretty bad since I use Ken Burns very frequently. I can only suggest to use the "Feedback" menu in iMovie and report this problem to Apple.
The combination of iMovie and iPhoto is my biggest motivation to use a Mac. If there is no solution available soon I wil have to switch back to Tiger and hope it does not occure there (although I have never noticed it there but some reported it also there).
Additional to the stretching the colors it produces are different to the original ones and the photo appears to be a bit blurred.

  • Widescreen imovie events in frontrow are squeezed into 4:3 aspect

I shoot all my personal video using a JVC everio widescreen camcorder. iMovie works perfectly with the camera and imports all my clips just fine. When I try to view them through frontrow the clips are squeezed into letterbox format. i.e black bars on the side and 4:3 video format. I thought that this perhaps was quicktime's fault but viewing the clips in quicktime works perfectly.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there some setting that I'm missing?

I'm having the same problem with HDTV contect (widescreen), transcoded to run on my Mac. iTunes plays the video correctly, but Front Row "squishes" it, and adds pillarboxing to the sides. Kooky, huh? I'm thinking it's a bug in Front Row. Anyone notice that Leopard really has a lot of bugs??

  • Widescreen on 13 inch MacBook

I know on the Macbook Pro you can set the iSight to capture in Widescreen in iMovie but how do you do it with the regular macbook?

    Welcome to Discussions, kurtau22.
The iMovie application works the same on either MacBook or MacBook Pro.
How you make widescreen movies depends on which iMovie you use.
*If you use iMovie HD 6*, select the "iSight" setting when start your new project. Then record your iSight video clip. The video will appear in iSight's normal aspect ratio. When you have finished capturing clips, change to the edit view and use the Editing > Video FX > Letterbox effect to mask the clip to widescreen:
*If you use iMovie '08* (version 7.x.x in "About iMovie"), you can choose the widescreen aspect ratio for clips you will capture by selecting widescreen in the choices bar of iMovie's File > New Project... menu when you create a new project:
or, to change the aspect ratio of existing iMovie '08 clips you have previously recorded, change the aspect ratio to widescreen by using the File > Project Properties... menu:
*For more specific help using iMovie*, you might get better help by posting in the iMovie Forum for the version you use.

  • 16:9 Widescreen / possible?

    I have iMovie 5.0.2 and IDVD 5.0.1
I just finished editing a widescreen DV movie in iMovie with no problems. When I drag it to iDVD it is in the 4:3 ratio. IF YOU CAN EDIT IN WIDESCREEN USING IMOVIE 5 WHY CAN'T YOU ALSO EDIT IN WIDESCREEN IN IDVD 5? WHY AREN'T THEY COMPATIBLE WITH ONE ANOTHER? WHY MAKE POSSIBLE IN IMOVIE THINGS THAT IDVD CANNOT HANDLE? THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TO ME..... I have done searches to find out what to do. I downloaded Anamorphicizer and dragged the iMovie file in and get a message "unknown error". I tried to "share" to Quicktime and get the message, "movie cannot be sent to Quicktime because of an unknown error. This is a one hour video that I have spent days editing. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Have you read this: Anamorphic widescreen in iDVD 5 at http://capital2.capital.edu/admin-staff/dalthoff/widescreen.html

  • Importing 16:9 quicktime file into iMovie HD6

I'm trying to import .mov files int iMovie to edit them. The Quicktime file is widescreen, but when I import it into iMovie, iMovie seems to import it in 4:3 - so the image is distorted. I've tried all the different import options ie: dv widescreen, MPEG 4 etc. Anyone got an explanation?
    Thanks.

    Hi
This is how I solved that problem with DV widescreen in imovie 06
    1. Start a new project as DV widescreen let´s call it TEST
    Import 1 clip.
That clip will be in 4.3 as you have noticed, (but forget about that for now.)
    Save and close iMovie.
    2. Go to the folder where you 16:9 files are and copy the files you want to import to iMovie.
Go to where you saved you imovie TEST project and right click on the project and got to "show package content"
In that folder you will se 3 folders and one is called "MEDIA", open that folder (and there you will see you imported clip) and paste you 16:9 clip in that folder and close the folder.
3 Start you iMovie TEST project and now iMovie will tell you that it found soma files in the trash and asks you if you want iMovie to show you those files say YES.
Now you will see your imported 16:9 files in the trash,
Drag those files to the clips pane and save you project.
4 Now you files should be correct in iMovie 06
    Cheers
    Hans

  • Widescreen & pillarboxing

After importing movie clips into a new iMovie 6 project set as DV Widescreen, the clips showed up as widescreen. But when I hit the edit button, it went thru a long process of pillarboxing down to 4:3. After saving and reopening the project, 2 of the 8 clips were widescreen, while the other 6 were pillarboxed. (Of course, I intended widescreen).
Checking the project's package contents, it shows those 6 clips as "clip 01-box01.dv" etc., while the 2 widescreen clips are just .dv. The trash contains xclips of the same 6 clips as .dv, but they are also pillarboxed.
What's happening here? Any ideas on how to reclaim the widescreen clips? Thanks, Ron

    Hi,
I am new to forums but searched through as much as I could to find a solution to my -similar- problem but didn't find any, so:
problem: when I want to import footage in 16:9 from my Sony DCR PC1000E (PAL), create a new project, choose WIDESCREEN DV, iMovie opens a project in 4:3
I have tried everything, switching auto pillarboxing on and off, creating the new project first and then switching on the camera - creates the right 16:9 project , but as soon as the camera is on switches to 4:3 and squeezes the picture again -, I resetted the camera, nothing helps.
Interesting though, if I open an old project with properly recorded 16:9 footage, I can record new 16:9 footage into it without any problem -just not inte a newly created project.
Interesting too: trying to close the last wrong import tryout, iMovie tells me that some clips are in the iMovie trash. When I reimported them they suddenly appear in the right 16:9 ratio, BUT -I thought 'fine, I continue from here'- iMovie doesn't recognize my camera anymore and after the project name it says '(DV-NTSC-Widescreen)' so not PAL which my camera has....?!?!
History: I have imported lots of 16:9 footage properly until I yesterday imported an older DV tape in 4:3 in seperate new projects. It seems that iMovie has hung up to that.
Might it help that I reinstall the last iMovie update (I already have) 5.0.2 ??????
Can one do that without any problems?
    Any help is greatly appeciated

  • IMovie wont recognise the selection when making new movie

    Hi!
I just got my MacBook recently and decided to plug my DV camera in. I opened the iMovie app and the pane came up to choose the input movie type. I chose DV Widescreen. Pressed OK. The iMovie opened up and it was normal 4x3 ratio. I did this several times and still DV 4x3. I even tried formats that I didn't have and everytime it came back to 4x3 DV.
Can someone tell me how to fix this?
    Thanks

    This is from David Pogue:
    "Wide-screen video gets letterboxed
Some camcorders offer a special shooting mode called 16:9 video (that is, wide-screen format). When you import this 16:9 video into a DV Widescreen project, iMovie HD sometimes wants to letterbox it, adding horizontal black bands above and below. Since the video is already 16:9, that’s probably not what you want iMovie HD to do.
The letterboxing begins as soon as you switch from Camera mode to Edit mode and click on a clip. The workaround is to not switch modes after you’ve imported your video. Instead of switching to Edit mode, stay in Camera mode. Save the project, quit iMovie, and turn off the camera. When you reopen the project, the video will stay 16:9."

  • IMovie 5 not detecting 16:9

I have iMovie 5.0.2 and a new Sony DCR pc1000e. I've just recorded in widescreen and when importing I set DV widescreen but iMovie resolutely imports it as normal and then letterboxes it for me. I understand the camera is "true widescreen", and 5.0.2 should be fine with this. What am I doing wrong, is there a work-around, is this camera too new? Help!

    Hi Martin,
I had a similar problem last week and posted on here but got no replies! Not one to be beaten by a problem I set about trying to figure it all out.
I've not yet conclusivley proved any of this but the following worked for me: -
1: In iMovie preferences turn off the auto letter/pillar boxing effect.
2: (I think this was the defining point for me!) Ensure that in the general tab in preferences, you set the "New Project Frame Rate" to match your DV camera and project format IE: if you are in europe you need to select 25fps to go with a PAL project and for USA choose 29.97 FPS for an NTSC project.
As I said, no real evidence behind this as yet (****! it's working now, I'm not gonna fiddle around anymore!) but certainly worth a shot.
    regards
    John

  • How do I get rid of squat dwarfs?

    Hi,
I just imported a QuickTime movie to iMovie but it comes out in widescreen format with the performers looking like fat dwarfs, whereas on Quicktime they look more or less normal. I want to burn a DVD but would rather have fairly elegant-looking performers on it. Is there some way to get this clip into fullscreen format or to stop the import from applying widescreen format?
    Regards

Thanks for the help. I finally managed to get a normal iMovie clip, in a roundabout way. The project had been set to DV but the letterboxing etc. box was checked so I unchecked it and imported the QT movie again but the squat men were still there. The original was a Youtube video which I had downloaded and opened with MPEG Streamclip and then exported to QT. So, I tried exporting direct from MPEG Streamclip to iMovie. This time the video was normal in appearance but there was no sound. Then I found your advice to another user here -- http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8265182&#8265182 -- and exported to DV and then imported to iMovie. I don't know why it is that when I export from MPEG Streamclip to QT or QT Movie it turns into widescreen on iMovie, but anyhow, it's working now.

  • Titles created in Photoshop

Good evening my fellow film fans,
wonder if anyone can help with this query. I am creating some titles in Photoshop to import to iMovie as jpegs. Basically I need to be able to control the fade up and down a lot more than what I can do with the pre-installed iMovie versions.
Does anyone know what size I need to set the canvas in Photoshop to fit the widescreen in iMovie HD?
Sorry if this is not a totally iMovie question but, am hoping one of you kind souls will be able to help.
    Many thanks
    PG

    Good Evening PC Logo:
Since you are from the UK I will assume that you are requiring PAL information. With that said...
As you know, PAL DV clip is composed of 720 x 576 pixels that are wider than they are tall. Photoshop doesn't do non-square pixels. So Photoshop pics get 'squished'.
Fix that by stretching the frame back out again. Go to Image>Resize>Image Size and uncheck the Constrain Proportions checkbox. Enter 768 pixels in the width field. When you re-import the frame into iMovie, it will squeeze the frame back into its original 720 x 576 PAL DV proportions.
    Hope that helps a bit.

  • Jerky DVD when burning an MPEG-4 DVD

I have an MPEG-4 camera (SANYO) and when I import its video into a iMovie and edit it all looks fine, When I send it to iDVD and burn a PAL DVD the video is jerky. This also happened if I do a disk copy or even in iMOVIE if I sent the project to be a DV-PAL project. I noticed that my MPEG-4 clips all have a 30FPS, could it be that something thinks that the video clips are NTSC and I'm getting the normal problems related to NTSC to PAL conversions?
    Help

I noticed that my MPEG-4 clips
Could it be that your video is compressed? Yes.
You should be using a MiniDV-based camcorder (set to record as 16-bit audio). I bought this cheap one for a trip to Italy and I love it:
    http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelFeaturesAct&fcategoryid=168 &modelid=11005
"On a Canon camcorder, the canals of Venice will be as grand as you remembered seeing them."
They do. Looks as good as my "pro-sumer" Sony. Works great as widescreen in iMovie HD.
    I know this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164939
says "iDVD also supports MPEG-4 and iSight video imported as an iMovie HD movie."
