Widescreen playback problems from FCP

Hello all -
I'm new to this group as I begin to work in the i-based programs, and I need some help with iDVD6:
I'm having the same problem as other users here, in that my 16:9 exports aren't playing back as 16:9 but as 4:3. I'm exporting cuts from Final Cut Pro (studio 1). I haven't yet tried playing the discs on my TV: the aspect is wrong when playing back in iDVD before burning, and also wrong in DVD player after burning.
I've tried the suggestions already listed here for files coming from iMovie; could there be a different solution for files coming from FCP? Changing the file size in QTP doesn't work (the file displays in true 16:9 to begin with), Anamorph. doesn't work, and yes, the video IS true 16:9 (shot professionally.)
Thanks for any help -
JLC

  • Audio exporting problems: from FCP to protool/STP and back again

Final Cut Pro sound export for mastering.....sync problem
    Hey,
I'm editing a 30 minute film and I have done most of the sound edit in FCP and Soundtrack pro and I want to now bring all the sound into pro tools to master the sound but every time i export sound into pro tools it seems to stretch by two or three seconds.
I have tried OMF, AIFF, XML, and Quicktime audio file sut to no avail!!!!
There are 50 tracks in the file so it is quiet large. It's not that there are handles of the file also as when I sync the file with the audio track with the video it syncs in one place but it is still out of sync in another.........It's as if the audio has been stretched!?!
If anyone has any advice it'd be much appreciated
    Keith

Check the timecode rate and sync options in Protools. It sounds like a timecode or samplerate mismatch.
Especially note that 23.976fps OMFs from FCP (probably STP as well) show up in Protools as 24fps sessions. Change the PTs timecode to 23.976 to realign.

  • Creating 16:9 Widescreen DVD's from FCP 5 16:9 project

    Hi would appreciate advice
I'm running Final Cut Studio with iDVD5. I have created a 16:9 project. All the Video / Audio etc settings are set to DV-PAL Anamorphic (16:9) with the Anamorphic check box ticked. Can Apple please tell me (can't find info in FCP or iDVD help) the proper way to Export the finished 16:9 FCP 5.0 Timeline so as to create 16:9 iDVD's. I understood it was suppose to happen automatically but when I Export the Timeline, Quicktime Movie keeps converting to 4:3. I've tried setting it to DVD- PAL 48kHZ Anamorphic but it still seems to revert to 4:3 (and takes 2 hours to create QT movie) What am I doing wrong? Do I need to resize in the Export Settings to say 1080 x 576...Or is using the Anamorphicizer as suggested in iDVD forums the proper way to do it? Why is it so hard I thought it was suppose to be easy....thats why I upgraded to FC Studio and iDVD 5...Please tell me the CORRECT way/settings to produce 16:9 DVD's please?
    thanks
    Waz

I believe the problem is there is no problem.
Don't bother resizing. That will just make more problems.
Widescreen DV is the same format as Normal DV. The 16x9 format is just a playback property which you enable from whatever app you're using for playback. All you need to do is tell iDVD that the footage is supposed to be in 16x9. I don't use iDVD that much since getting DVDStudioPro so I can't tell you exactly how to do this, but I believe it's a simple checkbox or the like.
Why not use compressor to create a high quality widescreen MP2 and AIF file then import them into DVD Studio Pro? DVD studio is just as easy to use as iDVD once you complete the tutorial and you will have much more control over your presentation. It's a great program to learn if you have FCP studio already.
    Hope this helps.

  • 16:9 problem from fcp- compressor- dvd studio.

    Using Compressor 1.2.1
    I shot mini-dv(xl-2) in 16:9 mode.
I tried using the widescreen Compressor preset but when I import the my assets to DVD studio 2.0 the aspect ratio is squished to 4:3. Using the display tab I changed it to 16:9, looks fine. But when i try to simiulate, it doesn't work and there an off black 4:3 box in the middle of the 16:9 simulation box. burning does the same. both do not play.
My presets are marked for 16:9.
dvds of the project, burn fine using the best settings of fcp Conversion and DVD studio, but i'm having problems going through Compressor first.
    Any ideas?
    fcp 4.5, compressor 1.2.1, dvd studio 2.0

    fcp 4.5, compressor 1.2.1, dvd studio 2.0
Are you really using DVD Studio Pro 2.0 There is a 2.0.5 update available. You also want to make certain that you have updated to the recommended Pro App Support package.
What aspect ratio do you have set in the simulator preferences (4:3 Letterbox, 4:3 Pan & Scan, or 16:9)?
Also, note the following from the DVD Studio Pro 2.0 help file (PDF):
"The most common error is to letterbox your 16:9 video assets before bringing them into DVD Studio Pro or QuickTime MPEG encoding systems. Once a 16:9 asset has been letterboxed, it becomes a 4:3 asset with black bars along the top and bottom of the video image. If you flag letterboxed source video as 16:9 video when encoding it, you will have problems when you play it back later."
That sounds somewhat like the problem you are having. Have you reviewed the "Preparing Assets" section in the DVD SP help file?<small><hr width="75%"><small>If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. Do for others as you would have them help you.<center>Thanks for sharing, Waymen.</center></small>

  • FCP X playback problem when updated to Lion

I am having playback problem in FCP X since I update to Lion.
I transcode my material to ProRes and I also crated proxy but I still have the playback problem.
I didn't have this problem with Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
    What can I do:
Should I change my NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 to ATI Radeon HD 5870
Should I add more RAM from 12GB to 32GB
What can I do please help.
    My Computer:
    Mac Pro (Early 2009)

    OS X 10.7.4 Lion
    FCP X 10.0.5

I started my Mountain Lion upgrade and couldn't get it to load.   Turns out that even though I had my Lion upgrade  in the apps download section from a year ago, I never upgraded to Lion in the first place. In my case I had to download Lion before I could upgrade to Mountain Lion. Hope this helps.

  • Problem playing back HDV from FCP HD

    FCP 5.0.4
I am doing my first HD project and am experiencing a problem I cannot solve.
Using both a Sony HDV HC1 and Sony HDR FX1 as playback devices, I cannot get the video to play back from FCP using HDV1080i60. Under Video playback, the options for the HDV are grayed out for the only firewire options:HDV(1440 x 1080) 30fps and 25fps. However, the option exists under Print To Video, and when chosen, will send HD1080i60p video to the cam>hi def monitor.
I have tried every possible setting on both cams to find a solution. Using DV NTSC I can get a work around. The cam's will both capture and control via FCP. Thanks for any advice.

No HDV decks will allow you to monitor external video from FCP through them UNLESS they are in the recording mode. So they just don't support this like DV devices do.
You need to look at a card for this. Least expensive would be the Intensity cards from Decklink. I like the MXO from Matrox too for this too... does more output, but has no input... I use an Io HD for that... and turn that slow rendering HDV to ProRes.. much faster rendering, and visually lossless.

  • Problems outputing audio from FCP into a mini dv

    hi there
i'm trying to output a video with 2 diferrent audio channels into a minin dv through a camera. everything is fine during output but when i check the tape the audio skips and sometimes sounds a little bit squeaking. i exported everything as .mov and imported back into FCP. so im outputting everything already rendered.
does any one have an idea why this is happening?
    thank you.

Could definitely be a problem with the camera, but... the most obvious thing is that your output from fcp doesn't match the format on the camera. Make sure that both are set to 48k 16 bit and that your camera is recording SP.

  • Exporting Widescreen from FCP to mp4...help!

Help! I'm trying to export a 720x480 video from FCP, to upload onto youtube. I feel this should be easy, but no matter what codec i use, the exported video looks stretched. I want the video to stay widescreen, can have black bars at top and bottom, as long as aspect ratio is kept.
    What am i doing wrong??

    You mean 720x480 Anamorphic, yes?
    Here's what I do...
File - Export - QT Conversion
    BROADBAND HIGH
Then, click OPTIONS and change size to 420x270.
That will force 'widescreen' no letterbox.
Then, I load that to youtube directly and IT takes care of the letterboxing.
    Good luck,

  • Problem importing Sequence from FCP 7 to Color 1.5!!!!!

I am trying to export a Sequence from FCP 7 into Color and am experiencing problems. When I send the Sequence to Color from FCP 7 Color receives the incorrect in and out points for many of the clips in my original FCP sequence. All of the footage being used was captured with the same settings from the same camera (Canon xha1). I have made all of the clips in my sequence that had basic motion effects into self-contained QT movies, so the basic motion ramping I've done shouldnt be a problem, right? There are no filters on the clips either. After hours and hours of searching, reading, and trial and error I cant figure out why Color will not recognize and play the clips as they appear in FCP. This is killing me and the project I am working on is due ASAP.
Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

In the Logging Info tab in Item Properties, the self contained QT movies I made have a TC Rate of 24 whereas the normal clips from the sequence have a TC rate of 30. Could this be the reason Color wont read the sequence correctly?
I have tried to remake the self contained QT movies with the Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 30p 48khz setting, yet still the TC Rate shows 24. What am I doing wrong?
You probably have "24" fps media on a 29.97 fps timeline, which would explain a few other things, especially why the in/out points are wrong on the COLOR timeline. COLOR does not look at express timecodes -- it functions like a good old fashioned EDL and works on durations -- so if the frame rate disagrees, the trims will also be incorrect.
I have no idea how you are making the self-contained QTs. Are you using Export QT, or Conversion? Are you manipulating the export settings in any way? Are you exporting from the timeline?
I myself am very disappointed with Apple's inability to cope with 23.98/29.97, because you are also dealing with three flavours of cadence/pull-down, not all of which are handled correctly, especially with ProRes.

  • Problem exporting from FCP using compressor

Out of the blue - I'm getting batch failures trying to export from FCP for use in a DVD. Immediately after selecting compressor for export, I get an error reading "That file already exists", and a new tab appears in the media browser with a lengthy character string. Compressor opens fine, and I select Best Quality 4:3 encoding for video and aiff48 for audio. When the batch is submitted - it promptly fails and blames FCP for generating an error.
Did all kinds of restarts and work arounds to no avail. The promising news is that this error seems to occur only when exporting from FCP through Compressor.
My work-around is to export a QT movie of the piece, quit FCP, launch Compressor, and then import the QT for batching.
Hope this helps anyone else in similar situations

    Hi:
    How long is your movie?
The best workflow is FCP > Compressor > DVDSP.
You can encode your timeline directly to get MPEG2 video and Dolby 2 (AC3) audio files. Then import those in DVDSP and author your DVD.
Using Compressor you control the full encoding process. You can test with small parts of your movie (those where you got problems with iDVD) and find the best encoding options fopr your footage.
Of course the DVDSP learning curve is longer than iDVD but once you learned ir you probably never go back. Like iMovie and FCP.
To give you detailed info about what encoding settings to use you must post some info about your FCP project.
    Hope that helps !

  • Export problems from soundtrack to FCP

    Hi all
i usually works well in Logic Pro and i didn't tought that sountrack was so hard to configure.
Ok, i cant hear sounds from soundtrack pro in edit mode (i mean when i double click a track to edit in full screen)..but i already open a topic about that issue.
Now my other problem is this:
i sent from FCP a sequence to STP..i apply some effects and SAVE the sequence. But when i come back to FCP nothing has changed to my audio tracks. How is it possible?
    many thnx

    Well there's your problem.
Take a look at the manual. Dealing with single clips v. Multiclips is very different. Single clips are done as audiofile projects. In that case a Save will update the clip back in FCP. If you're working in sweetening and mixing a multiclip project save saves the stmp project. To get your audio back into FCP or into another location, you do an export. There's no configuring involved—just an understanding of the workflow.
Logic, by the way, calls its similar "save" a Bounce

  • I have problem in FCP while playback in Sony TV, it only shows freedge frame, Video can play smoothly in FCP but in TV it shows only Freedge frame.

i have problem in FCP while playback in Sony TV, it only shows freedge frame, Video can play smoothly in FCP but in TV it shows only Freedge frame.

Come on gents and gentesses...... I'm really sweating on this one. Can't properly display my combined audio and pic when showing the Timeline contents of FCP in the MacPr's TV monitor Only the pic is appearing without any proper sound, as reported above. Just a mono row.
Does nobody have any idea on the problem or am I too far up to date with the MacPro and FCP 5.1.4 for even Apple to let me in on the way to rectilfy. Bloomin' upgrades...... !

  • Footage problems from digitising with Canon XF305 to FCP

I have uploaded my footage no problem from a canon 305 to FCP (7) using log and transfer but when I play back the footage it has lines going through it when the subject is moving. I may have the incorrect settings or something. When I put a clip onto the timeline it says it amends the settings to the clip but the clip remains the same. There are no issues with the camera and uplaoding to avid (i don't have avid but other footage from the same camera was digitised fine).
Help! I can upload a clip tonight as its pretty strange but I'm sure its just my lack of editing wisdom and its probably something really easy to resolve.
    Thanks in advance.

No change but i did upload a small clip to youtube from my capture scratch and the lines dont appear :/ weird! http://youtu.be/uOUdrqL4ISc (put it on HD)
Do you have any idea what else cud course the problem?

  • Unable to output from FCP to Canon XL1.

I have an eMac with Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD. I also have a Canon XL1 3 CCD camcorder.
I have no problem capturing footage from my camcorder to my eMac on FCP. I can also connect my Canon to my VCR and record off my camcorder to my TV, as well as play the tape on my camcorder to watch it on TV.
However, I cannot output from FCP to my camcorder. The 4 to 6 FireWire is attached to both the camera and the eMac and I checked the Log and Capture feature and FCP does recognize a camera or deck is attached. I've been trying to output it using manual record in which I press record on my camcorder and play the playhead on FCP. As I record, there is no picture on my viewfinder, nor any audio being recorded and when I play it back, I just get this blank blue screen, but the timecode is recorded.
    Am I missing something here?

    ensure the following are set
View>Video Playback>Firewire Apple 720x480 (NTSC or PAL - whatever is appropriate)
    View>Audio Playback>Audio follows video
    View>External Video>All Frames
If this isn't what you are set to do, you won't be sending video out to your recorder.

  • Widescreen Exporting Problem

Hello everyone, I finally managed to get my Premiere to work, however I now seem to be held back by another problem.
I am trying to export some 16:9 widescreen clips (taken from a flip mino HD) into a widescreen quicktime file. When the export area comes up, its all set to widescreen and the preview is in widescreen at all points.
However, when it goes through the media encoder and finishes on my desktop, the image is squished up into a standard 4:3 square, and I really cant figure out why.
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    David

The squishing is normal.  You need to unsquish it during playback.  Most software players won't do this automatically.  Windows Media Player and Quicktime in particular have issues with this.  VLC is a much better option.
