Widescreen Problems

Hi,
Hopefully this is in the right place.
I have transferred some recordings from my digibox to my Mac, which start life as a ts format. I've converted these using iSquint to mpeg-4.
I can view the new file absolutely fine on VLC Media Player in the original widescreen format. However, when I import this to iMovie it squashes the file to fit 4:3 format making everyone very slim.
I noted the option to change the project format to 16:9, but when I do this it effectively zooms in on the picture and cuts off a significant amount at the top and the bottom of the picture.
I can not view the files in their intended aspect ratio in quicktime either.
The file itself must be ok if it plays in VLC but I don't know where I'm going wrong with Quicktime and iMovie..?
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
John

I've found that doing as you suggest doesn't necessarily work for me in QT Pro ..which is why I've used MPEG Streamclip.
David, spent the day running tests in both NTSC and PAL environments. Observations are only preliminary since I took a number of shortcuts after the first 4-5 hours. Think I may have found the pattern. Once again the programmers have elected to try something a little different with iMovie '08. QT applications normally use the "Current" movie dimensions for both display and when setting conversion parameters. Appears they went a step further here. "Current" dimensions seem to control the shape of the "Thumbnail" icon display and the "canvas" size in the "preview" and export but the compressed dimensions (i.e., the dimension on the "Format" line in the "Inspector" window) appear to control the dimensions of the content displayed on the "canvas" as displayed by the "Preview" window and as exported. Thus, in your example, the 720x576 compressed content is simply "pillared" on top of the 1024x576 black "canvas" background. In the case of Format lines containing both compression matrix and square pixel equivalents, iMovie '08 always uses the square pixel equivalent for content display/output. So it looks as if all we've done is found a new way to "letterbox/piller" video content with this work flow.

    Where are you seeing this?
If it's in the FCE Timeline, how does it look if you pause playback?
"also my camera has a 16:9 widescreen, but if i film with that it doesnt come up on FCE in widescreen, it comes out all stretched and stuff? can anyone help??"
What Easy SEtup are you using?
"o yeah, when i but video in slow motion it is all not smooth slow motion, is there a setting or somthing to change?"
Try the Frame Blending choice from the Speed dialogue box.
How did you get the files you are using into FCE? Something sounds weird.

  • Widescreen problem

i know there are alot of questions about this, and i searched the forums to get an answer but couldnt find one. any answers are appreciated.
i am doing a project for school. i edited it on fcp as 1080i50 hd widescreen. when i export, i exported to quicktime movie, and used the "current settings". that played in widescreen. i created an idvd menu, imported the quicktime, previewed it, and it was widescreen. burned a disk image, and burned it on dvd. when i play it on my dvd player, it formats it to 4:3. my settings on my dvd player are set to letterbox. i also tested it on two other dvd players. the disk image plays in widescreen on my computer too.
any answers as to why all of a sudden my project gets tweaked to 4:3?
    thanks

  • Letterboxing + Widescreen Problems!

Just purchased a Sony HC96 DV Camera - but seem to be getting some problems importing the widescreen video content?
Now matter how I create a new project in iMovie - it automatically seems to change it to 'DV-PAL'.
If I import the video, then iMovie preceeds to convert it to a letter box format.
If I turn off, automatic letterboxing, then all the video content is stretched!
Is the above by design, or is there a way for me to import my Widescreen Content in Widescreen?

  • FCP WIDESCREEN PROBLEMS

I'm so very sick of this! I've tried many times to capture and set FCP to capture in widescreen but it refuses. it captures in full screen. When it plays in FCP, it will play in WS but, for example, like when I just had to FORCE QUIT IT, i have to re-import my video files and all 118 of them are fullscreen, which means i have another 4 hours of RECAPTURING!! and this is the second time I've had to do this.
How do I get the thing to capture in WS, i've got Sequence preset in DV NTSC 48 Anamorphic and Capture preset in DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic..... what am i missing! I"m also capturing in a Non-Controllable Device. The video camera is a HDV Handycam HDR rx1 and it shoots in widescreen.
    PLEASE HELP

the reason i was asking for more information was mainly to solve the MAIN problem.... ie you told me browser window, now yeah, you guys know what that is, OF COURSE it's called a browser window. That's as obvious as water is wet.
Well check this out. I call the "Browser Window" a "Library".... which makes since to me, as it holds my video files. Then a "going to the browser file and making sure the anamorphic setting is on" leads me EVERYWHERE!!! including left clicking on the video's themselves and the audio/video settings and making sure that the settings are on... meanwhile all i was asking for was
"The browser is what holds your videos, and you wanna scroll to the right and you will see anamorphic, if there is not a check, click on it and there WILL be a check.... and problem is Solved"
Thanks. and good night to you.
P.S. I hope your not teachers.
you remind me of my Social Science Teacher. When someone asked about the constitution, which was in the chapter we were studying. she said and i quote "How do I know, I didn't right the constitution" and promptly moved on.

  • IMovie Widescreen Problem

I imported a video from a JVC Mini DV video camera. It's supposed to be in 4:3 aspect ratio. It imported it as 16:9. It looks stretched. So, I opened Project Properties and set the aspect ratio to 4:3. Now the edges of the video are cut off, and the part I can see is still stretched. Any ideas?

    Hallo!
I have a problem which really drives me nuts:
I just exported an iMovie project in DV 16:9
widescreen to iDVD and burnt a DVD. The DVD was fine
on my computer screen and on my 4:3 TV screen,
however, on my 16:9 TV (and even a video beamer) and
3 different DVD players a noticeable portion of the
movie got cut on both sides. I tried to change all
settings on all my 3 DVD players and TVs, I tried to
burn the DVD both with Toast and with DVD Studio Pro
    - the only effect was that the cut-off portion on
both sides would change in quantity, but never would
the whole picture show. I even tried a conversion
with MPEG streamclip - no effect.
Now - before I switch to FinalCut and DVD Studio Pro
(I don´t even know whether this will solve
my problem), can anyone tell me what to do toremedy
    this problem?
    thanks, Alexander
    Hi,
were u able to find a solution to your earlier problem , i am having the same problem, i can see the 16:9 dvd fine on the computer but not on my home theatre system with a projector

  • IPod Fifth Gen Widescreen Problem

I bought several movies from itunes including Resident Evil Extinction and Degeneration, The Mummy Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and Pirates of the Caribean Curse of the Black Pearl. They all play back on my Fifth Gen ipod video in widescreen. I would prefer to use it fullscreen, so any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. Have tried _all_ of the suggestions including 4 of the "R"s - the Restore option is not possible, two different USB cables, 3 different computers (2 with latest iTunes update, 1 with previous). Still the same result - nothing! The ipod works fine apart from the connection issue. When attached to the computer "Do no disconnect" is displayed, but the ipod does not appear anywhere on the computer and iTunes does not start - even when I double click the icon.

  • Final Cut 6 Widescreen Problem

I just updated to Final Cut 6. I'm importing footage that's already in widescreen format. If I take a shot, enlarge it and put a widescreen matte over it, it works fine.
But, if I take a clip and put movement into it, a widescreen does not work.
Is there anyway to correct this?

If it's already widescreen, why are you putting a matte on it?
What do you mean, "put movement?" You're keyframing position?
Usual practice would be to build your sequence and then nest it into another and applya widescreen matte to the nest. But I do not rememeber what the nesting capabilities of FCP6 were.

  • HELP! Widescreen problems!

I made a DVD in DVDSP that has widescreen menus and two tracks that are 4:3 and 16:9. When I test it out on Standard and Widescreen TV's it worked fine. However, when I played the DVD in my boss's widescren TV it display the widescreen menus in 4:3 and when i format it to fit 16:9. It comes out all stretched. Either I built the DVD wrong or there is some functions to change on the TV and DVD player.
    Here is my work flow:
Shot footage on Sony HDV HRV1 camera. Setting were at squeezed.
Digitized footage into FCP. Edited a 4:3 and a 16:9 version of which is anamorphic.
    I exported out to compressor with the 4:3 being 4:3 mpeg2 and the 16:9 being 16:9 mpeg2.
Then I built a DVD in DVDSP. I set all the menus to 16:9 widescreen and the two seperate tracks as 4:3 and 16:9.
So what am I doing wrong?

So this is what you you're saying. Take the orginial 16:9 video and encode it to 16:9 in compressor. Then when i put it into DVDSP4 it will show as letterboxed on a 4:3 TV and 16:9 on a widescreen TV?
Jake also mentioned that I flag the video. How would I do that and what will that do?
I have taken both yours and jakes suggestion into consideration and I will make a DVD. I will let you know if it works.

"jumbled up" can have so many different causes it's

  • Widescreen problems in idvd.

when i export my movie from final cut express it is normal size 4:3,but when i try to make a dvd useing idvd my film comes up with the bars at the top and bottoms of the screen when i preview it but it looks fine but when i burn the film to a disc and play it on my t.v. the menu looks fine but when the video plays it has pixels when the camera moves can anyone help please.
    respond please if tried everything

For the first two years its worked great, but for the last year I've been having this problem ..
You've posted to the iDVD '08 forum and iDVD '08 hasn't been around for three years.
Did you upgrade to the iLife '08 applications and THAT is when the problem started or what?
What version of iDVD are you trying to use?

  • SmoothCam and Widescreen problem

I have some odd footage that is 4:3 but has a Letterbox built in. It was handheld. I was able to successfully run a SmoothCam operation on it, however... while the smoothing result is beautiful, I can now see the top and bottom of the original letterbox bobbing up and down (as expected). The Filter did an automatic push in to compensate but since the letterbox was part of the original image, it's still visible in frame, now counter-moving the newly steadied shot.
I expected the easy way to clean this expected visual result was to add a "widescreen" matte filter. However it turns out that this tool is applied before the resize of "SmoothCam" or any motion effects to the clip.
Is there anyway to add a Letterbox to a clip that has had motion, or a smooth cam modifier applied to it, without rendering a whole second edit? Essentially applying the effect after the motion, not before? The only thing I can think of is to add a still image that has a built in matte as graphic over the clip. But it doesn't seem that there is any way to apply it as an effect directly to the clip.

Thank you very much for the help. It sounds like you're getting the gist of it. Apply a Widescreen effect after a Motion or SmoothCam so that the Letter box is not effected by those motions, without leaving FCP
Your second solution works pretty well. But it still has a drawback for me, which I apologize for leaving out. While your solution allows me to stay within FCP, I can no longer adjust the clip (slide) within the edit. I would have to go to the nested sequence. I have a committee of clients that I need to be able to work on this edit with them looking over my shoulder. So having the clip looks as close to final as possible while still being able to nudge handles is where I wanted to end up.
It seems the best solution for me is making a .pct file that is a letter box mask embedded in the alpha channel, and simply adding it as a layer over the whole edit. It also seems to make it a bit easier to properly frame the image within the letterbox. (fyi, found this answer on another post... so I didn't just answer my own question. Although not unheard of )

  • IDVD virgin needs help! Widescreen ration aspect problems

    Hi,
I created QT movies from FCPx all as widescreen, when I play the QT movies they are widescreen but then when I create a iDVD, the ration changes to standard (even though it is set in iDVD to wide). When I am iDVD and look at the preview there is gray around the edges and it looks standard ration. What have I done wrong??  I found this advice:
f a gray border appears in the iDVD windo
When you drag the iDVD window to make it larger, the menu in the iDVD window always maintains the correct aspect ratio of your project (4:3 for standard video and 16:9 for widescreen). The extra space around your menu appears as a gray border.
To return the iDVD window to normal size:
    Choose Window > Actual Size.
You can also drag the window, reducing its size until the gray borders disappear.
But I cannot work out how to do this, I have clicked on Actual size etc but nothing seems to change.... I'm so crap at this, I really need help! thanks!

With the QT files I made straight from FCPx it says, 195.8mb 720 x 576. Then I used 'prism' and converted all the chapters and now they say 11.3mb 1024 x 576. I put them back into iDVD and it solved the widescreen problem. When I view the converted files in iDVD now they are widescreen and work. HOWEVER, I seem to have a new problem! Now there are 2 things that happen.
    1. Everything is widescreen but when I click on the chapters to view the video's, it automatically stops being full screen and goes down to a smaller screen and then you need to click 'full screen' for it to go back, this only happens on a few of them.
    2. Some parts of the DVD don't work, the footage goes all funny like ghosts and it jumps around and doesn't play nicely, then all of a sudden it works for a bit, then back to not working.
I tried using 2 different themes and the same thing happened. Any thoughts?

How can I get my 16x9 video to end up at teh right aspect ration in a widescreen iDVD project. It always comes out squished to 3x4 even with teh project set to 16x9.

  • Problem with widescreen filter

    Hi everybody
I'm working with Final Cut Pro 5. When attaching the widescreen filter to the footage and I'm ajusting the 4:3 picture in the mask, the picture no longer is as sharp as it was without the filter.
I think this had something to do with the realtime in Final Cut Pro 5, since in FCP HD, when I had to render the widescreen filter, this problem didn't occur. (Kind of the same problem seems to be when I create "Text" and attach a normal dissolve which causes a shuttered image during the fade; I solved this problem by attaching the motion blur filter, so FCP5 was obliged to render - and it worked). However this didn't resolve the widescreen problem...
Has anybody an idea on this topic or experienced the same problem? Could this may be a problem with the software?
    Thanks for your help
    greetz

Thanks for your answer. I wasn't aware of the percentage based issue. If this is the problem, that means that the offset adjusting with keyframes is quite useless since I always have then offsets that reach for instance from -33 to -44, with offstet numbers like -33, -34, - 35...
Is there any solution to this problem to avoid the softness at all? Like recompressing the whole footage after the filter adjusting? Is there actually no problem with the RT; on FCP HD there was no such problem.
I'monitoring externally and I see the softness also on the canvas and also when the clip was exported etc.
    thanks
