Widescreen Showing Up As Standard

Hello,
I recently burnt a DVD I shot in widescreen but it only appeared on my TV as 4:3. But when I look at the project in iMovie and iDVD, the footage is still in 16:9. I went into project info, and the setting is 16:9.
In the past when I have done this, the black bars come on top of the TV, but not this time.
I shot it on a Sony HD camera and used 1920 x 1080 format, not mini-dv.
If anyone knows what I'm doing wrong, let me know.
Thanks,
Dale

Are you sure the DVD is 4:3 and not just using 'Pan and Scan' to show you a 4:3 piece of a 16:9 movie?
Check the menu of your DVD player and make sure it is set to letterbox and not 'pan and scan' when playing 16:9 content.

Well... you can buy iPhoto 6 for about 80 bucks (and get the rest of the iLife bundle for free to do with as you please), or you can spend about 80 bucks for something like FotoMagico to do some of the things you can do with iPhoto and iMovie. Both are pretty good software bundles -- some people have bought (and use) both.

  • T420s-NVIDIA NVS 4200m shows up as Standard VGA

    Hey all,
So I've had this problem for a while now, I know that in my T420s there is a NVIDIA NVS 4200m GPU, but it refuses to recognize that it even exists. I'm running it in NVIDIA Optimus mode, but in Device Manager, all that shows up under the Display Driver are Intel(R) HD Graphics and  another which says Standard VGA Graphics adapter (which can't start due to a 'Code 10')
Why is it that my NVIDIA doesn't show up? How can I get my T420s to recognize and use it over the Intel HD?
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I got my new T420s today with nVidia NVS 4200M and after turning it on, it just showed standard video with 1024x768.
In device manager it showed both standard VGA graphics and NVIDIA NVS 4200M but when I right clicked on the desktop it did not give me an option to choose nVidia, but just standard VGA.
I updated the nVidia graphics driver from here (7 Nov 2011, the one from April 2011 was not enough)
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014142
I installed, restarted and nVidia showed up with all display options
    Problems resolved!

  • "Assign to desktop" only showing up on standard account

I have two user accounts on my Mac mini with my account being the administrator and the other being standard. The standard account is automatic log in while mine is password protected. When I right click on an application in the dock of the standard account and point the cursor over option it gives me extra options to "assign to desktop" and has all, none, and a couple more I believe. This does not show up in the admin account or on my MBP and I can't figure out why or even what it is exactly. Any ideas?

I figured out my own question and want to delete it but I can't find an option to do so? Anyway, it turns out that when there is two or maybe more "desktops" open at one time, that is when right clicking on an application in the dock shows the assign to options. Ok then.....

  • Showing HD on Standard Def

I recently bought an HD video camera, and edited together a movie with iMovie HD. I burned the movie with iDVD, but when I played it on my DVD player, the image was squished in the horizontal direction. I expected the down conversion to put the image in letterbox format. Is there any way to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Micah

  • Green artifacts showing up on standard FCPX text animations

Is anyone else experiance green artifacts showing up with their animations? Have you got them to go away? If so, how?
Here is what I'm talking about.
    15in MBP(mid-2012) non-retina
    OS X 10.8.4
    2.6 Ghz i7
    8 GB Ram
1 GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M
    FCPX 10.0.8

Have you tried trashing the preferences?
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.

  • Why did our standard format Quicktime movie switch to widescreen preview in iDVD?

We created wedding videos on Final Cut Express 2 and converted them to Quicktime movies. When you play the videos in Quicktime, they show up in standard format (not widescreen).  When we put the movies into iDVD 7.1.2, one of the movies shows up as widescreen and the other stays in standard format.  We want them in standard format (which is how they were shot).
    Any suggestions?

    Hi
When You make a brand new iDVD project - Select DV - not Widescreen-DV
In iDVD top menu Project/Project info - Here too - You may be must select 4x3 size.
And how You go from FinalCut to iDVD matters - My notes on this.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used (matters)
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
    Also do when problems occures
    • Trash iDVD pref. file and
    • run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • List DateTime Column Shows Pacific Standard Time When it Shouldn't

    Hi all,
A list in a site has the column DateTime applied to the view and it's showing the Pacific Standard Time when something is added to the list.  The Created Date is correct and shows our proper timezone and time of day but the DateTime column is 4.5 hours
behind which corresponds to PST.  I've check central admin and the web application time zone settings and they are set to our time zone as required.  Is there something I'm missing here?
    Thanks everyone.

    Hi  ,
According to your description, my understanding is that your DateTime column shows Pacific Standard Time not your proper time zone in the SharePoint 2010.
For troubleshooting your issue, please have a look at the blog :
    http://www.brainlitter.com/2012/04/09/how-to-set-regionaltime-zone-settings-in-sharepoint/
Also please go to your SharePoint Server -> Date and Time setting,  make sure the time zone , date and time is correct.

  • IDVD is producing a Widescreen DVD for Standard 4.3 footage

Folliowing on from my recent post, I am now using professional encoding setting to produce DVDs of old VHS family footage to DVD - all working great.
Using FCE4 to edit the footage and all ok until today. Doing exactly the same for about 20th time and the DVD working on now has been produced as a widescreen DVD - but the footage was shot before widescreen was thought of.
I've tried again and noticed in iDVD09 that when encoding assets (after DVD menu option is encoded) the video clip image then goes to a widescreen - and that's when I now stop it as don't want any more coasters!!.
Also the widescreen settings are on standard etc in iDVD and the footage as a .mov file opens in QT as standard screen.
Is there anything obvious I am doing wrong or can reset. I have started a new project and the same is still happening.
Any other ideas would be really appreciated!
    Thanks, Matt

  • Widescreen or Standard setting???

If I am making a iDVD photo slideshow and I am not sure if the person will watch it on a widescreen TV or regular 32 inch TV which aspect ratio should I use? Widescreen (16:9) or Standard (4:3)? If I select widescreen will it get cut off if they watch it on a regular 27 or 32 inch tube TV (not flat screen)???
Also, what is the best theme to use for just a regular photo slideshow of my photos with music?

It's true that standard def 4/3 if dead but it's good to think of what type of viewing will be done. I recencty created a slideshow presentation that I used a digital projector to project on a large wall space for a 50th anniversary party. It was projecting from a DVD player. I did the project in 4/3 and it projected using the full space instead of a letter box effect which made it have more of a movie viewing feel for my audience of 150 people. They liked it so much that I receive a $100 tip. Also many of my older clients have Large 4/3 TVs and are not very HD knowledgeable so don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. So think in terms of what will make for the best viewing experience for your intended audience.

  • Dvd won't play widescreen

Using iDVD 6.03. I've made a widescreen project and burned the DVD, but it doesn't play in widescreen format on my widescreen TV...neither of them. It plays standard (4:3 format).
    What am I doing wrong?

Any reason not to update to 10.4.11?

HOW TO MAINTAIN 16:9 ASPECT FROM IMPORT TO BURN
This is the way I do it. There is no compulsion on you to do it my way, but this works (for me). I started this method before iMovie and iDVD were upgraded to 6.0.3, and because not all elements of the various iDVD themes (particularly the pre-iDVD 6 ones) are consistent in keeping to 16:9 throughout the process.
The widescreen preview works just fine when you check your finished project within iDVD. The problem only happens when you either burn a project or save it to an image.
In this ‘How To’ article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2938
Apple suggest one reason why this is so:
“When you play a widescreen DVD on a standard size television, the text or buttons on a widescreen menu may approach the edge of the display, or appear cut-off.
When you are creating your DVD, be sure to keep in mind the audience who will be playing this disc. If you use a widescreen (16:9) theme and import widescreen footage for example, this will create a widescreen DVD by default. Consider whether the intended recipients of your DVD may be using a standard size TV (4:3) or a widescreen TV.
The movies you import as part of this project will likely play back letterboxed on standard television sets so that all of the content is visible. However, the DVD menu screens may be played as full screen with this configuration. As a result, some of the text or buttons in a widescreen DVD may not be visible on a standard size television.
To avoid this, turn on the options for both Show TV Safe Area and Show Standard Crop Area from the View menu when assembling your menu screens in iDVD. Make sure that all buttons, text, and other elements that you want visible for both widescreen and standard screen audiences are positioned inside the innermost area indicator.”
However, a bug in iDVD 6, particularly when working with PAL, and which has been reported to Apple, is that the sub-menus in many of the themes (the chapter settings) default to 4:3 aspect, NTSC and mpeg 1, instead of the desired 16:9 in mpeg 2 in PAL. This may be partly a leftover from iDVD 5 or even a newer ‘feature’ of iDVD 6. Here is my failsafe workaround, which sounds a lot more complicated when reading about it, that it is in practice.
Living in the UK, I use PAL (25 fps). Wherever you see a reference to PAL (25 fps) in the following you may substitute NTSC (30 fps) in the various settings mentioned (if you don’t live in Europe), the basic idea is the same. I still use this method, and take these steps, regardless of whether it is always necessary. Worst case scenario: it would have worked anyway. Best case scenario: it works perfectly where it otherwise wouldn’t!
The object of the exercise is therefore to ‘fix’ all constituent parts of the project (video, titles, theme, effects, even audio!) in the desired 16:9 aspect to avoid producing a DVD where the movie is in 16:9 and the menu is in 4:3 or where other irritating surprises lurk in your project, which you only discover after burning a coaster!
First go to http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?lang=english and download myDVDedit. This is shareware although the download is free. Send the guy a few dollars/euros, he deserves it. While you are there, read all about it. Now install it in your Applications Folder. You will need it later.
You have finished your iMovie project with music, transitions and so on, and saved it to you Movies Folder. Before you started the project you naturally set it to DV Widescreen.
Open iDVD. Give the project a name, and save it as Widescreen if it didn’t default to the same aspect as your iMovie project. Now import the iMovie project into iDVD, choose a theme (any theme you like, even if it prefers to stay at 4:3) and save the project. Do what you would normally do to the theme and its drop zones. Save the project.
Now save as Disk Image on your desktop. Leave it there for the moment when it has finished/appeared.
Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but this aids identification.
Now double-click the disk image on your desktop. It contains two folders: AUDIO_TS (which is empty, but please pretend that it isn’t) and VIDEO_TS. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on ‘Apply to enclosed items’. You will be asked for your root password. Close the get info window, and now click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click te middle one (VTS or VMG).
In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2 (if it isn’t already)
Set Standard to PAL (or NTSC if that is what you want)
Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
    Now save the file.
Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
Click on VTS Menu 2 and repeat as above.
You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!
If you have Toast 7 Titanium, open it. ‘Select DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS’. Choose Select from the main Toast window and select your projectname-TS Files folder. You are now ready to burn! You can set the burn speed (2x recommended) before the burn commences. Allow Toast to verify the burn before you eject the DVD-R disk.
If you don’t have Toast 7, then I assume you can burn the projectname-TS Files folder (disk image) via Disk Utility. I say ‘assume’ only because I have never tried it that way.
Either way, you now have a DVD which will play as 16:9 widescreen on any TV set, even the old ones where you can’t ask it to letter-box.

  • Widescreen (Editing) Issue

I`ve finally got around to my first iMovie Project today. Although not listed as `supported`, my SONY TRV340 works fine. I selected DV and widescreen and then watched the played back video on the G4`s screen - the problem is that it appears on the edit screeen as 4:3. I don`t really have a problem with this `cos I can always switch to 16:9 on my widescreen Tv when I watch my DVD masterpiece.
What I really want to know is, as I`d recorded the original digital footage in 16:9 (and it plays back in this, as it should, straight thro the Tv) why won`t it show as 16:9 on my iMac G4 iMovie `editscreen`. PS: I am using the latest version of iMovie as I got it from iLife.
I`ve trawled the `search` facility but everyones elses problems seem to relate to the latter stages ie: playback of their DVD`s on their Tv`s so I dont know if anyone can help here.
    Russell (Uk)

    Russell,
I'm not sure if I'm following you correctly, but I think the problem might stem from your project's initial setup. When you start a new iMovie project you need to select the proper "Video format." Make sure you have used the drop down menu to select "DV Widescreen," instead of just "DV." The edit window should then be widescreened and have grey bars above and below your film image.
The problem I'm having is that if you play this on a 4:3 television, it squeezes the image together. I've resorted to exporting the 16:9 movie to QT, importing it into a 4:3 DV project in iMovie (letting iMovie do the necessary letterboxing), then exporting it again as QT footage. Then, I drop both movies into iDVD, labeling one "Play Movie (Widescreen)" and "Play Movie (Standard)." It's a real pain, but I haven't been able to figure out any other way to do it.
    Good luck!
    Robb

  • Upgrade to CS6 Design Standard problems

I bought CS5 Design Standard on March 30, 2012 so I applied for the free upgrade to CS under the "Claim your complimentary CS6 Upgrade" program (http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/upgrade-policy-produ ct-announcement1.html).  I got an e-mail saying I was approved.  Under "My Adobe", it showed a receipt for the free upgrade with an order #.  There is a link on the receipt page to download the upgrade but when I click on the link it said I have no download.  I contacted cutomer service a couple of times (phone and chat) and finally I got an e-mail with a serial number for CS6 Design Standard and it said to click on the download link on the receipt.  But now the receipt that was there is gone and I can't download anything.  I contacted customer service again (chat) and they said it should be up in 24 hours.  It's been a week now and I contacted them again (response to open support ticket) and no answer now.  I thought I would download the free trial and use the serial number I got but I can only find a download for CS6 Design Premium, not Standard.  SO, where can I get a download for CS6 Design Standard or an upgrade to the same from CS5??  I have a serial number from Adobe but no place the download the program.
I went ahead and registered the CS6 serial number I got from the [email protected] e-mail and now it shows up as a registered product.  It shows:
ADOBE DESIGN STANDARD     6    Win    June 30, 2012
    with the serial number underneath.
I looked around to see if a download link would show up now, but I still can't find anything.  Any ideas?
(I originally posted this under the trial downloads section but moved it to here since it seems more appropriate).

Thank you for the help.  I finally got it all installed.  It only took 3 weeks to get this done.  You have been very helpful, but Adobe has been extremely unhelpful.  I'm not sure if you work for Adobe, but if you do let management know their customer support is lacking in many ways.  Sorry for the editorial.
