Widescreen v. Fullscreen

I know the difference between widescreen and fullscreen, but I wanted to know if I use iMovie to make a photo slideshow that will be mainly viewed on a widescreen tv in HD will my photos stretch that entire horizontal length and will they look poor in quality, opposed to using fullscreen format iMovie slideshow on a widescreen tv?

Hi gursk:
Select "Scale photos to fill screen" so black borders don't appear with photos that aren't cropped to the correct size ratio for your display.
Are you planning to send it iDVD?

  • Switching video from widescreen to fullscreen...

It says quite clearly here: http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/features.html#video
+"Turn your iPod Touch to switch between widescreen and fullscreen".+
But you can't do this with videos played from the video section of the main screen (only with videos launched via Safari). A bit misleading, and rather disappointing to find that I cannot watch videos while my iPod is docked.

  • Widescreen to Fullscreen

I started a project in widescreen by accident and didnt notice it until i finished it. is there anyway i can change the settings to that it is back in fullscreen since that is what the video was shot in? or start a new project and still keep that timeline?

    You need to
double-click the sequence from the imported project to open it on the timeline. If you drag the sequence to an existing timeline then you are nesting the sequence as a single clip.

  • Widescreen to fullscreen on A PE 7?

Hi, I'm considering buying Adobe Premier Elements 7.
Can someone tell me if it's possible to change a widescreen movie to fullscreen (pan & scan etc.) on PE7?
I assume this is possible on Pro, but...and I know it would be a long tedious process to drag a 4:3 box back and forth through the 16:9 edit screen/film and all but it's a challenge I'd look forward to.
If not, could it be considered a possible feature for future editions? I mean, let's face it, I'm sure there are many features that many of us don't use on Premier that might be someone else's bread and butter so to at least have the option on this would be great.
Anyways, let me know, thanks in advance. :)

Just start a standard 4:3 project. Add you widescreen movie clip to the timeline. Right-click and uncheck "scale to frame size." That may be the secret. In the properties panel select the Motion effect. Then you can use your mouse to drag the movie around on the preview monitor to position the scene. Of course you need to split the clip on the timeline where you want to pan to a new position.

  • Live Free or Die Hard: widescreen or fullscreen?

The iTunes store lists "Live Free or Die Hard" has fullscreen (lame!) but includes a widescreen preview. Which is it?

    Hi there,
Yes, that movie and many others were removed. Once the correspondent studio normally has the rights for each their movie, if they want, they can remove their movie from the iTunes Store.
Well, if you really want to get this movie on your iPod and in your iTunes library, you should get the DVD which actually includes a free digital copy. See [here|www.foxdigitalcopy.com] more information.
    Hope this helps!

  • Help with widescreen/letterboxing/fullscreen etc.

So, sorry to barrage this discussion board with so many topics. But I have been uploading a lot of videos recently and according to my sony video camera they were shot in 16:9, but if I turn let. leterboxing off, all the clips show up in full screen mode when I upload them to iMovie. Without the letterboxing, it looks a little scrunched, so I turned letterboxing back on, the only problem is that once I do so, and re-import the video, the problem is that the imported clips now have black bars on the top/bottom as well as the sides, is there anyway to make it so my 16:9 clips completely fill the screen.

Also, does anyone know if this is cutting off the top of the video when it letterboxes? How exactly does it reformat it?
Thanks in advance for the help!

  • How to make Widescreen Videos Display correctly in iDVD?

I shot video with my sony dvcam in 4:3 format. PAL.
I took this video and edited it in iMovie and Exported as follows:
    DVCPRO PAL; Aspect: 16x9 25fps.
Size: 720x576 16:9 (i do not preserve aspect ratio).
I take this quicktime movie file and drop it into iDVD using a non Widescreen format menu (but i go ahead and choose it to switch to widescreen when it asks me).
I have 10 small videos i do this too and out of the 10 only 2 actually play in widescreen. The other 8 start off by displaying grey side vertical bars on either side of the screen then proceed to move into a 4:3 aspect.
Why is this happening? Why only 2 work? What is happening to the other 8?
Each of the .mov files i am using display in widescreen when i open and play in QuickTime.
(i have checked using QTPro and all the aspects are set to 1024 x 576 (PAL) for each movie.
Can anyone point me some clues as to what is happening?
    THANKS

    OK found my solution.
Something in iDVD was not translating the .mov file correctly and not showing my .mov files in proper 16:9 format. It did so with 2 of them but not the other 8.
So i found a work around that made it work perfectly.
I made a new iMovie file in widescreen format. Closed iMovie. Then did a "view contents" function (cntrl click on iMovie file and "view contents"). Next i dropped the 16x9 .mov file into the Media folder. Open the iMovie file again and move the .mov file from the Trash into the Timeline. Save iMovie file. Then i dropped the iMovie file into iDVD and now i have my 16x9 movie with no problem.
I had to make these different aspects and formats because i needed 4 DVDs of each movie:
    Fullscreen PAL
    Widescreen PAL
    Fullscreen NTSC
    Widescreen NTSC
Glad i got it all to work out OK.
Also be sure to select the correct fps in the iMovie preferences before making a new iMovie. And deselect the "pillarbox and letterbox" option.

  • Scaling 16:9 Sequence into 4:3 in FCP 6.0.1

I'm doing a lot of projects in 1080i but the client wants to have them as widescreen and fullscreen for use on different pages of their website. What I've been doing is editing the projects in a 16:9 timeline and then opening a new sequence that is 4:3 and nesting the 16:9 timeline in it. The problem is the clarity is not what I think it should be. I've tried multiple settings for the sequence and the best I've come up with, so far, is as follows:
    Frame Size: NTSC DV(3:2)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601/DV(720x480)
    Field Dominance: Lower(Even)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: DVCPRO50 - NTSC (Quality 100%)
Any suggestions for adjusting the settings above for better results? Is nesting a recommended workflow for scaling the 16:9 footage. Any help appreciated, Thanks!
    -Matt

I thought that this was answered because compressor worked well BUT I'm having the same issue with a slightly different spin. I use Boris RED to do my graphics and when I import a rendered quicktime into a 4:3 project it's not scaling correctly. The interlacing is really horrible and I haven't found a setting inside of Boris that will mate with a setting for FCP timelines. For those that are not familiar with Boris the options given for render output are:
    720x486 NTSC D1
    720x480 NTSC DV
    640x480 NTSC Square Pixels
    648x486 NTSC Square Pixels
    720x540 NTSC D1 Square Pixels
    Custom Size
You would think that one of those would work well but so far, no joy. If you are an AfterEffects person and have a comp size that you use I'd love to hear that as well as it might put me on the right track. This doesn't seem like it should be so complicated!
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!

  • Computer resolution randomly changed

Hi, Im using my tv as a monitor for my computer.  The other day the resolution changed from widescreen to fullscreen and I now have black bars on either side of the image.  The resolution says it is 1024 x 768 which should be widescreen right?  No other resolutions work using the tv as a monitor anymore.  How can I fix this?  Thank you.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Thank you for the additional information.
I believe that the Aspect Ratio might have changed from 16:9 to 4:3.  If you look a P. 33 in the manual for the TV it talks about Auto Aspect Ratio.  When it is set to 4:3 normal (4:3 normal      Natural (with sidebars)) it states that it has side bars.  This is what I believe the black bars are on the screen.  Take a look at the settings to see if this is the problem.

  • Hi Guys I am new to this, need a hand

Okay so I have a video that is about 40 minutes long. I am making a short 3-4 minute movie. I transfered the video to the college's computer and then transfered it to an external HD and then transfered it to my computer. Now the video is 40 minutes long as I said before and it has different takes shot at different angles. I want to separate the different takes so editing and adding it altogether will be easier. I tried using the razor tool and cutting it and then exporting just the section I had cut out. Only when I did this it saves it in widescreen or fullscreen so when I pull the video back up in CS4 the video has been changed, like for example when I exported the video clip and then reimported it it was like it had widescreen twice, like how some videos on youtube are in widescreen but have black bars on the side. I hope this is making sense, I am a CS4 newbie I just got the program. I hope I am making it clear that I am trying to cut the video into more manageable parts so I can edit it and pull it altogether to make a short film. Maybe I am just going about this the wrong way? Please help me !

    hiya,
you could probably cut out what you want as individual scenes and just drag them up another video layer..  straight up from where you make the cuts....
It may or may not also automatically move your audio to the next audio track...so if you have to move that manually also to the next audio track...
then when you have all your cuts done and scenes moved to another video level you can just uncheck the video 1 layer ( or whatever video layer has your original stuff ) eyeball symbol at left of timeline...so you dont see that layer anymore....
same with the old audio layer...
wont hurt to just leave it there ...unless it gets in the way of your future editing...in which case you can clear that stuff from the timeline ( the old stuff you dont want )
if theres a separate audio track ( not muxed ) then you could also make subclips from the source monitor...and use them on your timeline.
no need to export and then re-import
note: do a test export ( shrink down the work bar to a small test area ) at some point before you go nuts with editing a long time...cause it may be that you dont have the right sequence settings to match your asset ...( as it seems you're having some trouble with your mention of widescreen with black bars etc )
In other words, test export to make sure you are starting off on the right foot to begin with

  • Simple question regarding HD video

If a movie is to be watched on a standard TV, are there any advantages of shooting in HD? What I'm saying is, can I shoot in HD 16X9 and then edit in HD 4X3?

You can capture and edit HD, then compress to a DVD that will play properly on a standard TV (letterboxed) or a widescreen TV (fullscreen).
The kind of HD camera you use will determine your hardware requirements to achieve this. You may be better off having the HD footage downconverted to Digibeta and working in SD if your final result will be an SD DVD.

  • How do you handle mixes of widescreen(16:9) and fullscreen(4:3)?

Okay I have a native Fullscreen(4:3) (FS from now on) that has a widescreen (16:9) (WS from now on) mode. I am primarily using the widescreen mode for shooting but on my Panasonic using the WS mode disables the image stabilization. You have to flip back to FS to turn on stabilization. The result is I have tapes that are mainly WS but have scenes, or clips, that are FS.
When I create a new iMovieHD (ver 5) project I choose DV Widescreen as the video format. Most of the video is fine but the FS parts are stretched. If I just choose DV all the WS footage is crammed into FS and only the FS shots look right. What I would like is to use WS format and have any FS content pillarboxed.
    2 part question:
1> Is there a way to do this in iMovieHD ver 5?
2>If no on 1 is this something that is better handled in ver 6? Might be a good excuse to buy iLife 06.

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
The following works for me in iMovie HD 6 ..try it and see if it works in iMovie HD 5, but I'm not sure (..I've forgotten..) if drag'n'drop between projects works in HD5; I don't think HD5 allows two projects to be open simultaneously. If not, you may need to Ctrl-click (..using the Finder..) on your 4:3 project to 'Show Package Contents', and then Copy the footage that's in the 'Media' folder onto your Desktop, so that you can then drag it into your 16:9 project..
    (1) Create a new project in 16:9 and import your 16:9 footage into that.
    (2) Create a new project in 4:3 and import your 4:3 footage into that.
    (3) Open the two projects side-by-side.
    (4) Drag clips from the 4:3 project into the 16:9 project ..they'll look wrong at first, but wait till they've been automatically 'pillarboxed'.
    The result looks like this:

  • Flash player to fullscreen non widescreen.

I have looked several places and I can't seem to find anyone that can help me with this I want to know how to get Flash Player(on websites) to go completely fullscreen on my 1280x1024 display without it keeping its widescreen values. I want it to fit to the whole screen without it being widescreen and showing black areas on the top and bottom to fill in the extra space. Is there any way to edit some computer settings or flash player settings to do this? I am specifically talking about viewing streams on Twitch.tv, but any flash player based site would also be helpful. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

This is something that the website (twitch.tv for example) would need to implement, Flash Player does not dictate the video dimensions.
However, unless the widescreen content is zoomed/cropped or the aspect ratio is changed, causing the video to become stretched/squished, there's not much you can do about letter boxing when going from 16:9 to 5:4.

  • [Mega PC 180 Deluxe] Media Center III shows widescreen AVI in stretched fullscreen

    Hey Guys,
I need some advice. I have Media Center Deluxe III running on my Mega PC 180 Deluxe and it works just fine... except for one titty bitty thingy:
All my DiVX widescreen films are stretched into fullscreen mode. Ergo, all of the film is stretched (long heads and stuff...)
How can this be prevented or solved, because it really is annoying.
    Plz Help me with this!

    Good Luck,
    John
I believe that function is only for viewing the videos from the preview window to fullscreen. I don't think it enables/disables "stretch mode" but i'll try that tonight.
if it works i'll post it here. if not ... well .... same thing i guess

  • Widescreen DVD only playing in fullscreen???

    Hello,
I'm having a problem playing a DVD on my Mac.
It is a professionally made wedding DVD in widescreen.
It plays in widescreen on my TV via the DVD player.
However, when played on a Mac, it only shows in fullscreen through both the DVD Player app and VLC.
Can anybody tell me why this might be?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Sorry for the delay.
    I have tried VLC.
What do you mean by "type of screen"?
