Widget background and align

Question

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the little white box to the right of my dropdown widget. I increased the width of this widget, changed lots about background colors etc, but once I got the ul li aligned by taking off the float left I got this little white box. 
The widget is within the header which I keep sizing to try to get it too to align to the center, but it is still off.
Also: I can't get the fixed footer to align to the center.  I have it auto for the 'container id' but nothing I try will make it align in browser preview, although it looks aligned in design view.
The widget code is with a <style> but the CSS is a separate file.  [Index is presently outside of any template, but the rest of the pages are within a template], so index is the best to look at.

Am I supposed to make it exist (what does it mean doesn't exist?) or can I just delete these?  This particular error is associated with the drop down widget.  I can see them listed in my properties for ul#navigation li a.
I think that means that it doesn't exist in the standard.  It's not a part of CSS 2, it is a part of CSS 3.  If the validator was checking your page against CSS 3 things might be different.  As I understand it that's why you add different rules that look as though they are doing the right  same thing.  The browsers are still hedging their bets a bit in terms of what will end up being the correct syntax for the rule.  So, again as I understand it, they won't validate until everything catches up.

I think that this one is a bit more technical but I think that I have read something about it.  I reckon that this is something that is unique to Microsoft.  Somehow, Microsoft took it upon itself to incorporate it's own code to do some fancy stuff.  It did cause a bit of a hoo ha and I don#t think it has much to do with the CSS standards.  Like I say, I've read stuff about it and I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I've largely ignored it because it was way over my head!  My guess is that the parse error there is the extra colon in that particular line.  As you know a single CSS rule is written as prpoerty-colon-value-semi-colon.
Like: color: #FFFFFF; or, width: 200px;
That problematic line has an extra colon in it and I wonder (but I'm not 100%) it that is causing the problem.  Sometimes the validator will show several problems that are caused by a single error.  These sorts of things make me wish I paid more attention at school!
