New AL Widget install: How to configure eth0?

Hi all--
I installed AL Widget (BASE) two days ago from CD.
During the install, except for the GRUB menu.lst file, I didn't configure any other files. Now, I want to connect to the network at work (LAN) but I don't even now if my Realtek 8139 Fast Ethernet card is detected (I don't think so) or if the proper driver 8139too is loaded (I've this file on my system though).
How do I get on the network from where I am? I'm stuck here since I need to go on the internet to get more stuff (e.g. Gnome, OpenOffice, etc)

P.S. I know I need to get an automatic IP address so I guess my system should use some DHCP client too, but how?

Following your help, everything was working find until...
I pacmaned -Suy all my packages. Until then, I got back to where I am at the beginning: lsmod doesn't detect my eth0
modprobe 8139too said : Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.25/modules.dep (no such file or directory)
I think I know the problem but I don't know how to fix it.
I think my kernel was upgraded to 2.4.29 by pacman because when I go to /lib/modules, I don't find the directory 2.4.25 but only 2.4.29.
So I guess modprobe search for 2.4.25 and doesn't find it. Is it what happened? How can I fix this and prevent it from happening in the future (is it with the NoUpgrade command in the pacman.conf file?)
Also, when I did pacman -Syu, it created a bunch of files ending by .pacnew (e.g., pacman.conf.pacnew, modules.conf.pacnew, etc). Why?

Bad user experience/errors with Adobe Air widget installation

I'm having a nervous breakdown at work (it's 10pm and I'm
still in the office), an Adobe Air widget application I've built is
somehow causing the client to panic (they can't install or run the
Adobe Air installation or the widget and now they feel all their
users are having the same problem). If anyone has a minute to try
this out and let me know if the widget installs correctly of if you
have any recommendations on a better user experience I'll greatly
appreciate it. The client is receiving an error message when
installing Adobe Air (error 0 or something).
widget is on the bottom left (installs for PC and Mac). If
the widget installs without any glitches please let me know. God

The application installed just fine for me. I'm running
Windows XP SP2 and I already have AIR 1.1 runtime installed.
I do have a few suggestions for improvement though! Just take
or leave any or all of these! :)
In your popup you say,
"Before installing the 9IX Rules Widget verify that
you’re running the latest version of Adobe Flash."
Is this really a necessary requirement? If you are
downloading the .air I think it would not matter whether or not you
have Flash installed.
Then you say,
"After installing Adobe Air (link below), return to this page
and re-install the 9IX Rules Widget. Install Adobe Air Now .
Otherwise click on the button below (the widget install button)."
I understand you are trying to make this easy for people but
to me this seems confusing.

If someone does not have AIR runtime already installed I
thought running a .air would trigger the download and install. If
not this gets pretty complicated. How do you test if they have AIR
or not? And since most will not at this early stage how dow we
educate end-users to even know if they have it or not?

You should digitally sign your AIR app so it does not say
Publisher: UNKNOWN with the big red "?" icon!
I would recommend against using all caps in your messages.
I would recommend choosing a better font (maybe a pixel font)
since the message text is a bit blurry.

BI Widgets 'Content Search' is not working

Hi,
I have BI Widgets installed on my comp. I can log in bobj server and take xcelsius/webi reports as a widget.
I can see infoview folder tree and all reports in 'Document List Explorer' but when i type any words in
'Content Search' no search results return . I need to use Content Search tool.
Do i need any special configuration on BO server to make work 'Content Search' ?

I use a widget contact form on my site. It appears and works in IE but does neither in FF 5. I can send the code if that'll help. Thanks. BTW - love Firefox.

if you're testing locally, you probably have a security sandbox issue. fix it here:

Location of Widget Preferences/Data Files

I've got the "Classic Notepad" widget installed to track job numbers, but after transferring everything to a newer machine, the widget no longer displays the content. I'd like to recover this list, as I (stupidly) don't have it anywhere else, by seeing if I can extract the info from the data files generated by this widget. Can't find any information on the location of those files.
Where are the data files for widgets located in 10.4.11?

Thanks for the reply. I located the preferences file, which didn't have my data. But you gave me a great clue -- so I looked in the user/library and found a folder which contained the text file and my data! Joy joy and more joy!
I've successfully recovered two years worth of job numbers. Thank you!

How to uninstall a third party home button widget from 5c ?

Hey there
I have just bought my wife a new 5C.
Previous to this she had an iphone 4 that had a third party home button widget installed (due to the home button on the handset crapping out a while back)
I have done a restore on the new 5c from the latest backup from the old 4 and the third party home button widget is now on the new phone. Obviously she doesnt need it as the home button on the 5c handset works fine (for now!)
Can any one tell me how to get rid of it ? I cant figure it out for the life of me !

If it's Apple's built-in "widget", it is called "Assistive Touch" and can be found in the "Accessibility" settings.
1) Open the "Settings" app
2) Select "General"
3) Select "Accessibility"
4) Scroll to the bottom of the list, tap "Assistive Touch" and turn it off.
5) The "widget" should now be gone!

Widgets Won't Work but Dashboard opens

I can open the dashboard and select widgets but if I try to open a widget or drag it onto the desktop, it automatically closes the dashboard and widgets fall off the screen, I think maybe somehow I've lost the original default settings and have disabled it? I really want to use my widgets, please advise

I am experiencing exactly the same symptoms on a brand new iMac 24" 2.8GHz / 2GB RAM :
- fresh full reinstall of MacOS 10.5.1 + QT 7.3.1 + Security Update 2007-009 v1.1
- no other widget installed than Apple standard ones
- I have 3 users created on my iMac : 1 admin, 1 for normal use + 1 for the kids
(no parental control activated)
- widgets have been working OK for 48h, and without any explanation, they are gone ?
I mean :
- when I launch Dashboard, I obtain a "grey" screen, without any widget at all appearing ;
- the "+" is available in the lower-left corner of the screen, and allows me only to select
the very first "Widgets" management tool : any other widget simply refuse to be selected ;
- any other action when Dashboard is active sends me back to the main Desktop window...
I deleted all related Pref files, tried the Terminal trick to deactivate then reactivate Dashboard, I even downloaded the Onyx Beta version for Leopard to clean all caches and then rebuild the authorizations on my startup disk, no way - still no Widgets
Any clue, pliz ?
Apple is not very optimistic in their note <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307022>, let's hope a clear solution will be found rapidly.

Flash Player won't install on my Mac

I'm using Mac OS 10.7.5 Snow Leopard and while installing Flash Player it stops and tells me to quit Dashboard Clinet. I've gone to force quit and have stopped everything on there other than the install program and I keep getting the same thing. Is there a way to stop the Dashboard? When I open it there does not appear to be a button to do so.

I feel your pain and have a solution that should work. I have been battling this for several weeks now, finally gave up, and wrapped up a call with an Apple engineer an hour or so ago. Come to find out, regardless of what the O/S tells you in Activity Monitor about Safari, Dashboard, or both "not" running, these processes are in fact being called. It seems that, at least in my case, on an up-to-date OS X / Safari combo, and with The Weather Channel widget installed, you will never get the newest Adobe Flash Player update to install. As soon as you remove The Weather Channel widget, the Adobe Flash update process will again work normally. It makes absolutly no sense, but I and the Apple engineer were able to reproduce the fix on my two systems and completely reproduce the issue and the fix on his. Not certain where the "blame" for the issue rests, but I suspect this is a issue with The Weather Channel widget - or at least how it is interacting with the O/S and Safari. I suggest checking for any installed/active widgets that grab/stream any soft of content via the web, removing them, and re-running the Flash updater. I hope this helps. Please reply to let me know if this did the trick for you too.

Dashboard quits when trying to launch widget from ~/library/widgets

My iMac has several accounts which work perfectly. However, my son just noticed in his account (his account is "standard" not "admin") that when he is using dashboard that the widgets that are preloaded (those in HD/library/widget) work fine BUT all those that he had previously added (i.e. those place in ~/library/widgets) do not launch. When he tries to run any of those he gets kick off dashboard back to the finder. I have tried eliminating the plist associated with Dashboard from his account but that did not work. Any suggestions?

Yes, I have trashed both of those files from his ~/library/preferences directory and restarted. However, the problem remains unchanged.
Additionally, I have also eliminated his cache items (com.apple.dashboard.client and DashboardClient folders in ~/library/caches) associated with dashboard. The only change has been that this has wiped his preferences so now when I start Dashboard on his account I get the default widgets (e.g. weather, calculator, time and calendar... as you would when you have a new account). Those dashboard items work as they are from the HD/library/widget folder. Those widgets that he added (e.g. say cheese, etc) do not start and kick you out of dashboard if you try to start them.
Lastly, I have removed all the widgets that he added to his account and then tried to add them back. When I double click a widget install file from his desktop, I do not get the same "slow motion ripple effect" widget addition item that I get in the other accounts on the iMac nor the dialogue box that asks if I want to add the widget. After doing an attempted install of a widget from his account, if I start dashboard and hit the "+" I see the new widget item has an entry, however, clicking on this just gets me kicked out of dashboard again and I am back where I started.
Any more ideas???

Itunes yahoo widget conflict

i upgraded to itunes 7.4 and have been having problems with it freezing after a couple of seconds. i have read other posts and deleted preference files and SC info file, which seemed to work. however on opening yahoo widgets itunes freezes again. i do have the bbc iplayer widget installed. could this be the problem? Cheers

Ok its not yahoo widgets. Deleting the preference files solves the problem, but i have to do this every time i start my computer!

Widget moved from the dashboard to the finder

I had the Livejournal widget installed on my dashboard, but somehow, it decided to move itself onto my finder. I can move it around and use it just as a widget, but it won't go behind other windows.
How do I put it back? It seemed to happen completely on accident.

Spell check widget wont work

after updating from os 10.4 the spell check widget wont work. when i right, or control click, it just high lights the word.

I used to have many Widgets installed on my old iMac and don't remember a spelling one. On this new MBP with 10.6 there is no spelling widget. The closest thing is Dictionary. It doesn't offer spelling corrections, just definitions. You have to highlight the entire word and then Copy and Paste it into whatever document or application you are using.
At the universal level, built into the OS, are spelling tools. You do not have to leave your app. You do not have to highlight the entire word. All you have to do is right-click (control+click) on a word and get access to Spelling/Grammar/Dictionary and even Tweet it if you wish. No Dashboard is necessary.

Always Visible Desktop Widgets

Just like Yahoo or Google Widgets on XP Systems, can I keep the Mac Widgets installed always visible on the desktop ? Any help ??
