Widget System crash -- no longer booting

About a week ago I used Disk Utility and Disk Warrior to clean up my Powerbook G4 (standard stuff), and everything has been working fine.
But today I was looking at my weather widget when I got a system error. If you're in the widgets when you get an error, the screen freezes waiting for input. I couldn't get out of the widgets so I couldn't click the system error dialog box to dismiss it. I couldn't even escape/crash out of the widgets and finally had to do a hard shut down (pressing on the power key).
Now my computer won't boot. I get a nice chime, but that blank grey apple logo screen and nothing. I got a similar screen about a month ago after installing the latest OS update, but once I just let it sit for awhile it corrected itself (I have no idea how or why). But that doesn't seeem to work now.
I can boot up fine off an external drive and see and use all my files. I can run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior but both give odd errors that basically the B-trees are destroyed and the system can't be booted or repaired. Disk Warrior can create a new system directory, but it can't save it to the damaged drive, so it's of no help.
Does anyone know of any other solutions rather than erasing the hard drive? I'd like to avoid that if possible.
Thanks.

Disk Warrior is good, if it can't repair the problem not much can be done.
if the files can be accessed when booted from external drive, you could try copying over user home folder from PowerBook to external drive, then "erase and install" OS.

  • System Crash after updating Boot Camp beta 1.3 to 1.4

After dowloading the latest BootCamp version 1.4, I double clicked on the icon and the Installation started. I have an option to upgrade the BootCamp currently installed in my system which is version 1.3. And so I clicked on the "Upgrade" button, I waited for about five minutes but then nothing happened. So clicked on the "Go Back" button and just cancelled the installation. I restarted the system and then the screen just went black and the BSD something prompt appeared. I restarted several times but the same Black screen with the BSD prompt happened. I called up support and was able to recover my system after reinstalling the entire OS. The support guy told me they already got several calls with the same system crash problem after updating the BootCamp. Just wondering what just happened?

I just bought the new Mac OS Leopard, it already comes with built-in Boot Camp.

  • Mac OSX 10.4.8 Update Breaks Raid Striping -- System will no longer boot

    Hi,
I'm a newbie from the PC world with a Mac Pro. For the last 8 hours I've been trying to get a Raid-0 configuration to work with no success.
The Raid array constructs ok and the system boots. Once that's done the Software Update screen arrives and I would select install all... then the machine would not boot. I get a Grey Shade like affect and the message to power off and restart. Powering off does nothing.
So I started again for the Nth time and added each Software Update individually. All loaded and rebooted successfully until the 10.4.8 Update.
As soon as that loads, installs and restarts the machine will not boot.
I called Apple's Tech Support and they told me they do NOT support RAID on this machine. I said what are you talking about. They put me on hold talked to a supervisor and came back with the same story. I just don't get it...
So anyone have any insight and advice on why the update breaks my Raid-0? What can I do to get over the problem (I'd like to have the RAID...)?
    Thanks for the assistance.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, you needed an emergency boot drive anyway to repair your RAID boot drive. Just use the same one in addition to a working clone or backup of your regular system.
Apple made it easy to install or update security updates and system updates from an alternate drive (but you will have to use the stand-alone (combo preferably) updaters instead - which many use already as normal part of upgrades for years now (they seem more useful and reliable).
My preference is a dedicated boot drive with OS and apps and minimal home directory - no media files - and fast, like 10K Raptor. I use RAID for my home directory so it isn't on the boot drive for years to improve performance and keep the OS separate. Never a problem and nice mix.

  • System crashing or no booting when battery is inserted

Today I've experienced a problem I've never seen on my machine.
    It's a MacBook Pro, early 2008.
It freezed while I was using it, something never occured. So I rebooted it, and after 10 minutes it freezed again. When I rebooted it, it didn't reach the gray screen, the screen was basically off, but the power led in front was on. It was very scary because 6 months ago I suddenly had the same screen when waking up the machine and I had to replace the logic board.   I have to say that after the logic board replacement the machine has always worked as expected.
I've resetted the SMC and the PRAM, but the problem was still the same. I powered off/on the machine a couple of time, and I've reach the Apple screen once, but it crashed again while loading the system (basically the spinning wheel stopped and I had to power off the machine again).
I did the last test: removing the battery and testing it just with the AC current. And it worked. System is on and everything worked ok. Since the machine turned on I tried to repair the permission and verify the disk. The disk was not ok, I had to repair it via external drive.
So I thought it could be ok, I reinserted the battery and I powered on the machine. And it freezed again. I tried a couple of time and was always the same.
So I took off the battery, and now it's working.
My battery was in bad condition. It didn't last the 300 cycles-life "legend". Since I upgraded to snow leopard (180 cycles then), the status battery was changing from "service battery / replacing soon / replacing now". It was still providing an hour and so of power so I didn't care too much (my fault, I know).
My question is: could a bad battery be causing this behaviour?
Should I buy a new battery or the symptoms decribed could be something more? As I said, I already had to spend 600 euros for the logic board replacement (for a 3 years machine.....)
Thx a lot for your support, hope someone can help me

You clearly have a hardware problem of some sort, so take your machine in for service as soon as you can. An Apple Store or authorized service provider will have good batteries to use for testing purposes and proprietary diagnostic testing software that's not available to you or me.

  • Corrupted System Files, No Longer Boots

Note: I am trying to fix my grandfather's computer, and I may not know some exact details about what happened just before the problems began occurring.
About a week ago, the computer would refuse to boot up. It would sit at the gray screen with the Apple logo without the loading dial showing. I booted off of the Tiger install disk, and ran the disk utility.
When I verified the disk permissions, it gave the error, "Disk Utility internal error: Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I get the same error message when I try to repair the disk permissions.
When I choose verify disk, I receive the error message, "First Aid failed: Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Below in red, it says, "Invalid Key length
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
If I tell it to repair the disk, I get the error message, "First Aid failed: Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Below in red, it says, "Invalid Key length
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error."
Is there anything I can do to save the computer?

  • X200 auto-update BIOS upgrade failed? system no longer boots

    Hi,
I've had an X200 for around 7 months now and just did an auto-update earlier today. One of the items was a BIOS update, so I thought what the heck, it should be fine, always has been before. The update completed correctly and shuw down for reboot as planned.
The system now no longer boots. Nothing at all happens. When I press the power button, no matter whether with AC supply or on battery, the following happens:
    - num lock, caps lock, HDD and 'power on' lights light up for a second or so then go off again
    - they come back on again for another second, and off again
    - then only the bluetooth light and the 'power on' light remain lit, and nothing else happens
It seems pretty fried to me. What can I do? I'm in severe despair! :'(
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Phil

    Hans;
Thank you for the reply.  Say hiya to Amelia for me.  Does this mean you're an alien?
Ok, I tried using bootable CD and no go.
I don't really have a simpler graphics card around to try that.  So that test may not happen.
I can try with one dimm when I get home (I'm at work atm.)
I also thought about putting the drive into another system and will try that also later today or tomorrow morning.
D-Bracket:  I will have to watch that again.  It really didn't make sense to me as the lights went through a lot of the steps then came to a halt at what I think was BIOS Sign on.  Someone did suggest to me that I might have a virus, which may be why the second hard drive failed eventually.  But I'm not sure about that and not sure what can be done about that unless clearing CMOS would take care of it.
    So, any new thoughts?

  • System crashes when i use any input field after installing Maverick

    Hello all.
I have a 2010 macbook air, and have just installed Maverick OS.
Now every time i go to any input field to type in a web address or apple id, the system crashes
and re-boots. Tried to alter keyboard properties nothing works.
I presume i will have to do a factory re-set, because i can not load any updates because I am asked
for apple ID, which i cant enter because computer crashes... Oh right i mentioned that already ;)
    Help advice welcome!

There was an issue similar to this that was resolved with DAQmx 9.3 update. If you haven't done so already, update the driver to 9.3 and try again. If not, try opening an example (like, say, Hardware I/O->DAQmx->Analog Meas->Voltage->Cont Acq&Graph Voltage-Int Clk-Analog Start.vi), and try running that standard example. If the example works and you still have difficulty with your application, could you post information about your project and what navigational steps you take to make the error occur? Try also opening the VI inside and outside of a project (this would diagnose a symptom of the issue resolved by DAQmx 9.3).

  • [SOLVED] After pacman update, system no longer boots

Updated pacman packages, and half-way through the upgrade proces fails (it mentions not being able to find package-control).  Upon investigating, I notice no programs are working.  I ls /usr/bin and it is empty!  In a panic, I restart the machine, and it no longer boots up.
My boot is on sda3 and /root is sda5.
When bash starts up, it loads the kernel fine, and then after a second it panics and exclaims: "No init found. Try passing init=bootarg".
I load up my trusty Arch livecd and fsck the partitions.  Fsck claims both partitions are clean.  I am able to mount them and examine the file structure: all files look like they are there.  I then try to chroot the mounted partition (sda5, my /root), and get the error that "/bin/bash" is not found, even though it is there in the correct directory.  Not sure what to do now.
My grub entry, which has always worked fine prior to this:
    legacy_kernel '/linux344-ck' 'acpi_osi=Linux' 'root=/dev/sda5' 'rootfstype=ext4' 'init=/sbin/init' 'pcie_aspm=force' 'acpi_backlight=vendor' 'i915.i915_enable_rc6=1' 'i915.i915_enable_fbc=1' 'i915.lvds_downclock=1' 'ipv6.disable=1' 'i915.semaphores=1' 'modprobe.blacklist=bluetooth,uvcvideo' 'ro'
    legacy_initrd '/initramfs-linux-fallback.img' '/initramfs-linux-fallback.img'
UPDATE: solved issue.  I didn't read the news.  Upgrading via pacman broke my system because of this.  Now I know!  System is running smooth again.

Huh. I guess the problem was a couple of stale and crusty {,f}getty .service files, and an obsolete slim.service file I created a while back.
Removing them fixed my problem, although tty1 still shows boot messages (not a problem, and may not even be "new" behaviour)
    Cheers Tomegun.

You need to use the computer's install disks to repair the hard drive or install a new OS.

  • Yosemite System Crashes on Boot with Dell U2713HM

Previously under Mavericks I had no issue with a Dell U2713HM monitor and my 'non-stock' NVidia card.  (The reason I'm using the video card I am is because the stock ATI card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT) is known do fry itself which I discovered after replacing it with an identical card and having the 2nd one fry itself after a year.  I did a lot of research and settle don the card I now have because others had reported success with it.  It worked fine for nearly a year until updating to Yosemite.)
After upgrading to Yosemite my system went into an infinite reboot loop on startup.  On a hunch, I swapped out my U2713HM for an old 17" monitor and was able to boot.  I can't even have the U2713HM plugged in/turned off using the second port on the card without the system crashing.  If I get the system booted using the 17", I can then plug in/turn on the U2713HM and set the resolution - at that point I can (sometimes) boot but it will then crash on shutdown triggering an automatic restart.
Is anyone having any success with a U2713HM, and especially with an NVidia card?  The only option I haven't tried is a completely fresh, clean install.  Once the system boots, I get the dialog that it was restarted because of an issue and can view part of the dump info that will be sent to Apple -> that clearly indicates the issue is with the kernel/NVidia driver somewhere.
System specs:  Mac Pro (Early 2008) with an NVidia GeForce GTX 650 1024MB card installed running Yosemite (OS X 10.10)

My mac mini (late 2012, Yosemite installed) doesn't start with Dell U2713HM if the USB cable of the monitor is connected.
No problems if I connect the usb-cable after successful startup. Also the usb-hub of the Dell is working fine then.

HOWEVER I AM ABLE TO GET INTO DISK UTIL AND REPAIRED MY HD AND RECOVERY HD HOWEVER THE OTHER IS STILL THERE AND WILL NOT LET ME ERASE IT. IT STATES IN INFO OF THE DRIVE "NOT ALLOW OWNERS TO TURN OFF...YES". I AM IN THE SAFARI BROWSER NOW AFTER LEAVING DISK UTIL. DISK UTIL READ MY HD IS FIXED AND OK AND WILL BOOT HOWEVER I AM SCARED IT WILL ONLY BOOT INTO WHATEVER THIS WEBKIT MAC OS X BASE IS.

That's Mt. Lion's Recovery volume which you could have used to erase the working volume and do a clean install of Mt. LIon.  To get rid of it you may have to try to repartition the entire drive with Disk Utility.
Otherwise, reboot with the Command+R keys held down to boot into the Recovery volume.  Once there run Disk Utility to again erase the working volume and then do an install of Mt. Lion. This method is much easier and quicker than doing it from the USB device.

  • Equim L350D-11D no longer boots

I had uninstalled Mcafee Internet security 2 weeks ago to install Trend Micro (it was free from my ISP) and have had problems since. It started with a software conflict so I uninstalled the software, and the laptop continued to work fine, but then I noticed the laptop started to run slowly so I did a disk clean up, deleted old emails. Then a bluescreen error message flashed up while running Firefox, with the title memory management and the laptop did a memory dump and rebooted. It appeared to run as normal so I ran another disk clean up and uninstalled unused programmes, such as a game and LG Pc suite and real player and Tempro. I then tried to access Firefox and a error message came up saying firefox is no longer there or may have been moved. I then access internet explorer and within 20 mintues the laptop crash, blue screen errror stating that there has been an hardware error and that I should stop the system caching or making shadow copies, it then preceded to do another memory dump and reboot than showed a blank black screen.
I had to reboot via the power button and use last known good configuation to get back into windows since this point everything I have tryed ended in the system crashing showing a blue screen and rebooting to a black screen. I stopped the system cach/keeping shadow copies, and then checked the device manager for errors. I found a yellow error flagged up on the BIOS software and it states it is not working properly and *error code 39*. I tryed to run the BIOS update software and it states I have the latest version 1.70 installed.
I have run diagnostic software, and done a memory check but all it states is there is a hardware problem. I attempted on several occasions to do a system recovery first via the harddisk which hanged before loading the software then rebooted to a black screen, the second and third time via the recovery disk, which again hanged and then rebooted. I used the F8 menu to access windows and try and run diagnostic software, uninstall unnecessary software or an antivirus scan but everytime I tryed to do anything it would crash, on certain occasions internet access via internet explorer seemed to trigger a crash.
In the last few days when I boot the system, rows of green dots appear, at first this occurred after the Toshiba screen had loaded and before windows attempted to load and the system would then just hang and not load windows. Then the rows of green dots appeared over the top of the toshiba screen at boot, and now the screen does not light up at all on boot, all that happens is the fan goes, the optical drive runs and the caseing feels cold indicator lights on the ac power, battery and drive light up green as normal but nothing happens, the fan seems to run and the optical drive responses but nothing esle.
I am now lost as to think what could be wrong as I can no longer access windows or the BIOS setup, is it the BIOS software? Or the Memory? Or a Virus on the Harddisk?
If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it

    Hi
Its really a long story buddy
You started with the Trend Micro installation to be honest I dont think that any software installation could cause the issue described in your posting.
Even if this would be caused by any software, the issue should be solved using the recovery disk. Recovery sets the unit to factory settings therefore in my opinion its definitely not a software issue.
According to the fact that you are not able to access the BIOS, even the recovery procedure does not work, I assume there is a serious hardware problem
At first I would recommend checking the RAM modules.
Test the notebook using one module in each slot. Test both modules and maybe you could get the notebook working otherwise I would say some of the motherboards components is faulty

  • MacBook Pro system crashes

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to OS10.8.  Shortly afterwards I started having the system crash about once a day - sometimes more frequently.  It only does it when using apple mail and firefox after having been dormant for a while.  It basically goes blank and then after about 30 seconds gives a gray error page and starts to re-boot.  The service folks didn't detect any hardware problems.  It has 8 GB of ram.  All suggestions are welcome.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select

In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Finder/System Crashing OS10.9.4

    Hi folks,
started yesterday out of the blue. finder windows were bilking on and off every minute or so, then, periodically, entire system crashed. Got that "something happened" message that usually indicates kernel issue.
I uninstalled Symantec, quit google drive (which was a "not responding" process according to Activity monitor), and rebooted from restore partition and repairs permissions (Run Macaroni, so this is usually up to date).
Now, the finder windows no longer blink on and off, but system still crashing every 10 mn or so.  Here's the Console report for latest kernel.

    Thx Linc,
reinstalled the system software from the restore volume, then booted in safe mode. Computer crashed again. Seems to be doing it like clockwork every 9 min and 4-5 secs.
Also, I don't seem to be able to launch Messages. Tells me theres a problem and I must quit and restart it, which I can't do. Don't know if the two issues are related.
I don't use chrome. Google drive, set to launch on boot, seems to be hanging. Activity Monitor reports it "not responding"  same for iCloud Photos.
    Now what?
    Here's the latest kernel report:
