Widgets Behaving badly on Leopard

Upgraded MacBook Pro to Leopard, and everything seems good except my dashboard widgets. "Say Cheese" displays part of its border shifted down too far and part of it transparent. "rpncalc" is completely transparent except for the buttons, which are in the wrong location and some of them are clipped. Sudoku widget displays OK, but each key must be pressed twice to take effect.
I tried removing the preferences files for the widgets, and moving them to trash and reinstalling, but same results. Same widgets work fine on my 13" Macbook.

Is it only some widgets that have this problem? And are they Apple widgets or 3rd party widgets?
I would suspect that they are 3rd party, not Apple, and the problem is hardware related, but not your problem - the widgets are not fully compliant with your MBP.
If you post a link to one of those bad widgets I will see what it does on this box. It's a Santa Rosa 3,1 from late last year. 64 bit, of course and completely up to date.

  • Mouse/cursor behaving badly

Seems to have started recently, maybe with OS software update? My mouse is behaving badly as in it can't seem to capture open Mail windows to rearrange them on my screen - often takes 3 or 4 attemtps to "catch" the window. Also, can't rearrange stacked layers in palettes in Adobe CS4 programs, keeps wanting to bring up dialog boxes for layers instead. Have changed batteries in mouse (Logitech optical wireless) and changed mouse preferences, but seems to be getting worse. Any ideas? Could mouse be getting old? Have had it for quite a few years. Am working on a Mac 2x2.4GHzQuad-CoreIntelXeon, Mac OS 10.6.8.

Bluetooth is turned off. The 'wireless' is a direct wireless and not through the Airport. When I turn Airport on, there are three other networks visible but they are all locked.
But, given your suggestion about the mouse, I just tried the mouse on my laptop - AND IT'S THE MOUSE!! Same behaviour repeated on the laptop...
Thanks. Time to go get a new mouse and lay this one to rest.

  • With or without add-ons, and after removing/reloading Firefox, some sites behave badly, though they're fine with Internet Explorer.

The computer in question is running Vista. With Firefox 8, some websites, e.g. Whitepages.com, livefreept.com, behave badly. Spedifically, they require the user to click on tabs. But the tabs don't appear at all. I upgraded to Firefox 10, to no effect. The sites work fine on this same computer with Internet Explorer, and on both our XP and Windows 7 computers using older older versions of Firefox. All three are using the same Norton Internet Security program, with the same settings. Starting in safe mode, with no add-ons has no effect. Help!

  • Leopard Behaving Badly

I have Leopard 10.5.1 installed on my wired Mac Pro and my wireless Mac Mini. I have Tiger 10.4.11 installed on my G4 iBook.
I also have .mac syncing my keychains, and somewhere along the lines, both my Mini and my iBook got knocked off the wireless network. I was able to re-enter my wireless network password on my iBook and get back onto the network. But when I try to enter the same password into my Mini, I get an "incompatible security" message.
Any ideas on what I need to do? Would (temporarily) wiring my Mini so that I can sync my keychains again make a difference?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Recovering Widget settings form Snow Leopard to Lion

Just did a clean install of Lion and am looking to recover my stickies on my dashboard from my time machine backup. I have the appropriate widget.plist file on my desktop recovered from my Snow Leopard backup. I just don't know where i'm supposed to put it in Lion. The file structure isn't the same...
    Any ideas?

Will upgrading preserve the windows partition or will it damage it?
No, but if the 10.7 upgrade goes badly then it's a issue for Bootcamp.
How do I back up?  Will time machine back up the windows 7 partition?
You can use WinClone to clone Windows in bootcamp, don't know if TM copies it or not, to restore would mean it would have to write NTFS and Apple doesn't have a license to use that proprietary format.
OS X can only read NTFS not write, however I'm not a TM expert.

Perhaps you should state your machines specs, you ARE aware 10.7 will not run a lot of older software?
That it really requires 4GB of RAM to operate well?

  • Finder behaving badly

I bought a refurbished MacBook Pro from Apple 6 months ago. From the start, if the Finder was in list mode, I always found the Applications folder wide open. I always close all folders before quitting, but it doesn't seem to matter. Applications is wide open again.
This morning, the cursor started jumping around as if it were having a seizure of some sort. The translucent "Finder" icon (from Dashboard?) kept flashing on and off in the middle of the screen. Restarting did not solve this problem.
I do not have a copy of Snow Leopard, but if I were to buy it and restore the software, might this solve the problem?

If you bought the machine from Apple, the install discs should have been included. Call AppleCare and get the requisite discs. You can't set the Finder to list mode; however, you can set Finder windows to list view. So, if I understand correctly, when you open the Applications window, it's in list view, and all subfolders are also open. If so, CMD+A, CMDSHIFTleft arrow should close all of those subfolders. Give that a go and see if it the issue persists.
As for the translucent Finder icon, I have no idea what that's about, since I don't use the Dashboard or any of its widgets.

  • Is Time Machine bad on Leopard Server?

    Hi,
I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to setting up osx server, however is it true that using time machine to backup Leopard Server is bad? Our office is running leopard server off a G5 dual-core 2.0 with 2.5GB ram. The boot drive is mirrored in a raid 1, and we have a Sonnet D800RAID (RAID 5) connected via ATTO raid card. All employees will work off the server, meaning all projects will be stored there on the RAID 5.
We wanted to use time machine to do incremental backups of the RAID 5, however apparently from what I hear, using time machine on a server is a no,no. Why though? Does it really use a lot of the CPU running in the background?
I really want to implement, but not if there's a BIG problem going to arise from it in the future.
    Thanks in advance~

    Hi
I guess it depends? The current version of the Server Admin Manual available here:
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/ServerAdministration_v10.5_2ndEd.pdf
does not have a lot to say about it one way or another. However the previous version of the Admin Manual clearly states on page 37:
*+"Leopard’s Time Machine feature is not recommended for server file and system backup of advanced configuration servers"+*
If you purchased the boxed copy of Leopard Server 6-9 months ago it may still state this in the provided manual? There have been some who have used it successfully when the server is configured as Advanced. I have no personal experience of this but if you search the Mail Forums you should find recommendations to not use it if configured as Advanced/Mail Server. Its not so much backing up but rather problems develop when restoring.
I've not had chance to test with Open Directory, perhaps others have?
Just a thought but I would consider carefully (depending on server role) if I had need to use it for the Server itself. On the other hand I think it works fine as a source for client backups.

  • Widgets behaving strangely

Apologies if this has been answered before. I have various widgets & have noticed lately that whenever I access them after my mac has been switched off, they are quite often in different positions & the Weather widget quite often forgets my location & defaults to Cupertino instead of the location I have set. This is happening on both my MacBook Pro with 10.5.8 & with my iMac running 10.5.7
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Ben

Have you tried trashing the widgets plist files and restarting your computer afterwards?
If you do a forum search, you will find many threads about the weather widget acting strange.

  • ITunes 8 behaves badly on second monitor

Strange problem that I have noticed on my MacPro 2.66. I have two 22" LCDs running on my MacPro with 4GB of RAM and 10.5.5. If I try move the iTunes window on right LCD by grabbing the header bar and dragging the screen will freeze for about 30 seconds. The window will eventually move but the screen will not redraw. If I move the iTunes window to the other LCD it works fine. This only affects iTunes not any other panels on the right LCD. Quitting iTunes and restarting doesn't solve the problem. I did rebuild permissions after I upgraded to 10.5.5.
Can I just restore iTunes 7 from my Time Machine back-up?

kinu wrote:No way with Twinview (or I don't know how to do it). I will try with xrandr.
Yeah, seems to be a limitation of the Nvidia GUI, but it seems that it's possible [and necessary] to configure it with Xorg's configuration files if you want more freedom to position your monitors.
Since some extra configuration is needed with the Nvidia driver, xrandr alone might not be ideal in your situation. [I mentioned it before since I never needed to mess with my Xorg configuration, and an .xprofile script based around xrandr works better with my Intel-based laptop. ]
Xorg's config files seem like a better choice for you, and if you need to change monitor layouts on the fly, xrandr should still work once you have a good Xorg configuration. If you choose to go this route, you'll probably find this section of the Xorg wiki page very useful: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Nvidia_2
Since you'd need to specify a position for your second monitor to workaround this, you'd need to use a line like this, instead of the "RightOf" one in the example configuration: ' Screen       1 "Screen1" x y ' where x,y is the location of the upper left corner of that display.
[If a configuration file already exists, make sure you create a backup of it first. Worst-case scenario, a bad config file will prevent X from starting, and you could just restore the backup from the command-line.]
I also discovered that offsetting it by the exact height of your panel seems to cause problems on your primary monitor [at least with the latest version of the XFCE panel]. Upon rebooting, windows would not respect my panels, and instead would go underneath them when maximized. Although, by offsetting my second monitor by a little more [1920x280 instead of 1920x284], both monitors allow windows to maximize correctly, so if you run into the same problem, something like that should fix it.

  • Lion mail behaving badly

    Hi all,
I just got my wife a a Core i3, 3.06Ghz 21.5" iMac. I bumped it to 8MB of RAM as she never remembes to quit anything. I updated he to Lion after using it for a week and finding no problems on my machine. As of late Mail has started to behave very strangely. After responding to one or two e-mails without problem in the next e-mail she responds to the charachtersshe's typing apper on screen with more and more of a lag until she can be three or four lines ahead of the on screen text. The problem doesn't happen all the time and she can't, so far come up with a definite way of replicating it consistantly. The responses that have this problem also can be very slow to send, with the general "rainbow" spinning system cursor and not the gray spinning "working" icon spinning next to the mailbox, that you usually get when the ISP is being slow. This again is not consistant. I could not replicate either problem when I tried it. She has probably 30 smart mailboxes that she uses for student mail in her various teaching jobs, is using the "classic" setup. She is composing in "Rich Text" with the spell as I type feature turned on, is using Helvetica as the font but has changed to Times to eleiminate any weird font corruption problems. She never had a problem in 10.6 on her old iMac or on this one. She also ran mail on 10.7 for a week or so with no noticible problem.
Any ideas where to even start? I'm not familiar with Mails preference files and can't delete anything that will mess with her smart mailboxes, as losing them would be a disaster for her. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

    Some things to consider.
Create another admin account and see if the same thing happens in that user account.  If not, then you have a problem in the primary user account.
I am assuming you zapped PRAM and did an SMC reset, plus unplugged all periphals for awhile.
If the machine recently started acting this way, look at recent installs.  If it has acted like this since you installed 10.7.2 you might reinstall using the combo update or install the 10.7.3 combo update.
You can also reinstall Lion and not lose your data.

  • Widget appears on Snow Leopard Desktop at Startup.  Random.

    Hello everyone,
I just installed two 2GB sticks of Crucial Ram in my 13" Macbook Pro unibody for a total of 4GB of RAM. As soon as I booted up the computer, the weather widget appeared randomly on the desktop. It is completely detached from the dashboard. Any ideas of what could have gone wrong? Do I reseat the RAM?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Click and hold on the widget, call Dashboard while you're holding the widget, then drop the widget on the Dashboard.

  • Apple Mail Crashing, Behaving badly

Suddenly Apple Mail is crashing. Running Snow Leopard on 2-year-old macbook pro. The program freezes, does not display the full text of the message, and has crashed at least 10 times today. Also says it cannot send with the server, but it actually IS sending (kept trying to send one message only to find it had sent 8 times to client).
Help!! Is there some kind of reset button? Already run repair permissions.

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Buttons behaving badly

    Hello,
I'm seeing some weird "ghosting" or "artifacts" -- not sure what to call it -- from some buttons in my PDF in Acrobat 9.
I created a hidden navigation bar. When activated, a few of the buttons remain on screen after I click a button in the nav bar. When I mouse over these buttons, they are "live."
On other pages, the buttons work fine. I click one, it takes me to a new page, and they disappear.
I created the nav bar in InDesign CS5 and exported to interactive PDF.
Any idea what could be going on?
    thanks

    Hi there
You have Button objects in Captivate and you have Rollover Slidelet objects in Captivate. Each has a different purpose.
With Buttons, you program each one with an action and when the user clicks, the action is carried out. While it's the default nature of a Button object to pause the slide until the user clicks, clicking the Button will also release the pause and allow the playhead to continue.
With Rollover Slidelets, you have sort of a "Slide within a slide" (hence the term "slidelet"). These may appear when moused over and will disappear when mousing off. OR, you may configure them to remain on the slide for their timed duration when you click. It all depends on what you want it to do.
The bottom line here is that you really need to think through what you want to accomplish. Then choose the objects and construct the slides so they behave as you want.
    Cheers... Rick
