Widgets in Belle better ? other things?

Hi,
some of nice widgets are in Belle as one can see on some sites.
What I am riddle is, how one can have more favorite persons
than four with the widget "Contacts, favorites"?
It shows four, but when inserted another widget,
it shows the same four twice and not eight different.
Email Widget looks nice but is a lot space consuming.
When in previous releases was place for five Email account on one Homescreen, whereas now it uses so much space just for two email accounts.
To check five to six accounts it wastes three homescreens out of six,
thats two wasted of the three more homescreens.
If other things are also going to waste space on the small display
the increase from three to six homescreens is no better, but loosing overview.
As it is very nice to hace on/off widgets for WLAN,NFC,VPN
I miss the Bluetooth and the 3G/GSM switch!
Where displays are for WLAN, VPN, 3G/GSM
I miss the display for NFC on a NFC Smartphone.
Another point, shouldn't VoIP Service and VPN not be better
directly included in the OS because of the all purpose use?
It would be better than the Microsoft  Communicator
which is limited to company use and not every company like to use it.
Will be the very neccessary integration of Navigation commands  over Bluetooth finally come with Belle Updates?
This is a live saving function, because the driver doesnt have to handle between Radio, Phone Call and navigation like today, but simply follow the navigation while watching the traffic.

Contacts -
There are 2 types of widgets,
1) This is a single contact widget for an individual favourite contact.
This is a square widget, larger than....
2) There is the rectangular contact bar. Basically if you scroll left to right you can access the other contacts, the same as in Anna.
Email -
They are big but they are a massive improvement because you can scroll up and down within the widget. You can view and launch up to 20 (I think) emails.
Connectivity -
You can turn on/off bluetooth, WLAN and data connections from the pull down menu.
There is also the option of widgets controlling these features being present on the homescreen.
There is also a widget for turning off/on the FM transmitter which is very easy to use and a big improvement over the Anna widget.
The widgets on Belle are, in general, a vast improvement over the Widgets in Anna.
Other notable widgets -
1) Music Player - Massive improvement of the Anna Widget in terms of looks. There is a larger widget as well as a compact one which takes up the same amount of space as the Anna widget.
2) Social - The updated Social App v1.5 come with a number of new widgets for belle, the best being an interactive widget the size of the new email widget. This allows you to scroll down and view the last 10-15 posts as well as update your status directly from the widget. I think Twitter posts are also included as well. You can also sync your FB contacts with your phonebook.
3) Bookmark - You can have direct access to your bookmarks from the native browser. These are square widgets which show the home screen of each bookmark.
4) Large Calendar - This is the same size as the new email widget but, again, is interactive and shows a number of events per day. You can also create events directly from the widget and view the next 7 days without opening up the calendar.
5) RSS feeds - These again are the size of the email widget. You can view the last 10 story titles from the widgets and again it is interactive so you can scroll up and down without ever leaving the homescreen.
6) Weather - There is a new weather widget which shows the weather conditions based on locations. Quite handy.
There are lots of other new widgets that come with Belle and can be installed as add ons.
They are generally bigger but not as restrictive as the Anna widgets, the main positive is that they are generally interactive within the home screen. They can be moved about the screen to fit where YOU want them and they can be positioned differently depending on whether you are in landscape or portrait mode.
I have been using Belle for around 2 months now and it is a vast improvement over Anna.
I'm not sure that the navigation commands can be sent via BT (haven't tried), however as a bit of an aside, there is a new app called Nokia Car Mode . This basically creates large buttons to make it easier to access call/music and sat maps whilst driving. There is an option to pair the device via bluetooth on start up which may allow audio navigation via bluetooth.
Check it out,

Hope this is of some help.

The 15" Retina's will have better performance than any 13" Retina. Not only do the 15" machines have dedicated GPU's, but they also have quad-core processors, whereas the 13" Retina's only have dual-core processors.

  • I Get an Error "To Access Your iTunes Library ..." And Other Things Are Wonky Too ... Can't Reset ... Internet Radio Drops ... But Things Look To Be Set Up Okay

When I use my Apple TV and try to play music from my computer I get an error: "To access your iTunes library on Apple TV, turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer using 'myname'"
On my computer n iTunes Preferences / Sharing I have the "Share my library on my local network" checked with "Share entire library" -- no password, no update play counts.  I've turned it off and on again.
The Apple TV settings show we are "talking to" my WIFI -- it has my network, shows a good signal strenght, all sorts of internet addresses and IP stuff I don't understand ...
The "Internet" tab works with some of those things I'd never use -- like I see the current NHL standings.
My TV works and I get an ATV signal and those little chimes / bongs when I hit things in the menu.  And when it works I get audio so the cables and TV are okay.
In the past I had trouble with the settings for my favourite Internet Radio stations (the provider changed their URL but Apple didn't update the presets for a while) but those are now resolved.
I had a crappy old G class router and week signal strenght but I have a new N class Cisco router with a strong signal.
    But other things are wonky:
    * I play interent radio and my station will go fine for about five minutes then stop -- the little wheel spins trying to reconnect.  Sometimes it resets but more often than not it won't.  I just tried again four hours later and the same thing.
    * I've unplugged the ATV and plugged it back in but no noticable improvement
    * I tried to do the factory reset from the ATV menu.  It says it will download the latest bla bla bla and after a few minutes tells me "Apple TV can't download latest update right now, try again later" -- I've tried three times today always with the same results.
    * I unhooked it from the power and HDMI and plugged it into a Micro USB cable and plugged that into my Mac -- it doesn't show up in the devices in iTunes.
    * I have a bunch of photos in a folder that I use for my ATV Screen Saver.  A few weeks ago I added two photos to that folder -- they don't show up in the ATV screen show but the others still do.
    * When I started today I checked my iTunes and the airplay icon didn't show in the bottom right (beside the genious icon and the little thing to show or hide the sidebar).  Now I noticed the Airplay icon is there.  When I try to switch from playing through my computer speaakers to my Apple TV I get an error "An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the Airplay device "Apple TV"" -- the ATV shows that Airplay is on.
    * I see from the ATV settings that I'm running ATV Software 4.4.3 (3323) and when I do a "Update Software" on the ATV it tells me that my software is current.
    * My iTunes is 10.5.2 (11) and my OS is 10.6.8 -- both are up to date.
    Yikes and double yikes!
    Any ideas?

    Hey Chunk,
I love the idea of the ATV more than I have loved the little black box but ... famous last words ... my ATV seems to be working better these days.
A big challenge for me was too many variables at play -- new router, new ATV OS / firmware / whatever, changing internet radio presets, a less than perfect physical set up ... and a short attention span from yours truly.
Here's what I did.  Somwhere in these changes things got "fixed."
    * I unhooked the ATV and did a factory restore by hard wiring the ATV to my computer with a micro USB cable (no external power needed) working through iTunes (I run iTunes 10.5.2 on an iMac with OS X 10.6.8).
    * after the reset I now have ATV (is that an operating system or a firmware?) 4.4.4
    * then I plugged it back into my home theatre and it didn't work :-) but in slightly different ways.  The settings showed that I was connected to my home network but I couln't get connected using my Apple ID and no internet radio.  (it is often counterintuitive -- like why when I want my ATV to talk to my iMac over my local network am I logging in to the iTnes Store with my Apple ID? but there you go.)
    * I booked with the genius bar at the Apple Store and put my ATV in my pocket.  They pulled out a TV, HDMI cable, ATV power source and even the remote -- all I provided was my little black ATV.  We hooked the ATV to their TV and from the Apple Store (using thier WIFI) I logged in using my Apple ID and the thing worked fine.
    * so now I knew that my ATV was up to date and it worked in the Apple Store using their network so it looked like the issue was my network.
    * rebooted my router and noticed that when I had upgraded to the new super dooper Cisco n router we had plugged my iMac direct to the router via ethernet cable.  I unhooked the ethernet and now just run my computer WIFI using AirPort.
    And ...
It works.  I use my ATV exclusivly for music -- my iTunes and internet radio and AirPlay -- and now both work fine.  The ATV does pick up photos from my iPhoto for the screen saver and all that other stuff -- netflix, youtube, the hockey scores, ... all seem to be there.  And my son played a video off his iPod Touch using AirPlay.
I know my approach is more scattered than a proper scientific try but ...
From my experience ... reset the ATV and get it up to date; see if it will work on someone else's network; check your network set up.
    Good luck!

  • Lightroom 1.2: XMP-bug still present and some other things

    * I just upgraded to 1.2, but the XMP-bug is still present. When I turn on autowrite XMP LR starts using 50% (1 of 2 cores) of my CPU for quite a long time (15+ minutes) after startup. During that time the interface is somewhat sluggish (probably because of the lack of multi threading).
This behavior was also present in LR1.1. Turn off autoxmp and the cpu-usage will drop to 1-2% within a few moments of starting LR. Turn it on, and it will use your cpu for quite a long time (29.000 photos in my DB).
    * One other thing I still notice: when using identity plates for printing, the identity plate doesn't rotate with the photo when switch from a landscape to a portrait photo (auto rotate is on to make things a lot easier). The print module is one of the greatest things in LR, but this still annoys me)
    * Decent support for multi core CPU's is still lacking it seems. I have to run two export batches simultaneously to get my CPU to 100% cpu usage. Maybe it's an idea to split one export batch into several smaller ones so the can be processed at the same time using both cores.

1.2 fixes a bug in the auto-write mechanism that severely effected the performance of auto-write when files with changes were offline. Unfortunately, we didn't have time in the cycle to drastically enhance performance of the XMP auto-write mechanism for making large batches of changes or toggling the option on and off. The Lightroom team is aware of these issues and is working to resolve them for a later release.
The wording of the download page is pretty obscure. For a more accurate, detailed review of the changes in 1.2, please refer to the blog post at http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/ . For a better understanding of ways to use the auto-write mechanism in the interim, check out my post at

  • Help with Guilloches and other things?

Heya, i've used Illustrator before for a few things, but i'm still quite new to it. Hope you can help.
Ok so what im trying to do is make bank note from scratch. Dont worry, its for a college project and it'll be an entirely new design so theres no chance of anyone mistaking it for real money (althought I do want it to look real)
I wanted to include Guilloches in the design. These are the lines found on bank notes to make it harder to counterfeit:
I've experimented using shapes made of lines and using the blend tool to create multiple lines in between them, but it doesnt give the same effect. Is there a better way to achieve these results?
The other thing is cross-hatch shading. I want to include my own photo into the design (vain, i know ). Ive also found no way of doing this. Can you help me?
    Thanks

Sorry, but Illustrator is really not ideally suited to banknote design.
I designed the current series of Icelandic banknotes so I know all about the problems involved.
You can make something that "looks" more or less like a banknote, but doing the actual artwork for a banknote is a totally different kettle of fish.
Illustrator (although a vector application) has pixel-based output (rip), whereas real banknote designs never use pixels, only lines.
In addition, the colour-banding used in real banknote printing (not gradients as such but specially mixed bands of colour inked onto up to 4 offset plates for each side of the note) makes line work extremely difficult to produce.
You can do guilloches with blends, repeat rotations and all kinds of distortions, but getting them to "ink" properly in 4 separations using gradated bands of colour is extremely complicated. It will cost you much hard work to produce a passable semblance of a banknote if you use only Illy.
You mention cross-hatching in a portrait. This again is fiendishly tricky to reproduce in Illustrator because engraved lines in intaglio are not of a constant weight. You can get part of the way using various brush strokes, but frankly I would advise you not to attempt it unless you are prepared to spend several weeks doing the job. It takes a skilled engraver up to three months to do a good portrait (with a burin on a steel plate, a few lines per day). I have always sent photographs or detailed pencil drawings to the engravers. Specialized applications are available that can produce a semblance to hand engraving, but they are really not very good and the outcome invariably involves a lot of manual tweaking. If you are good at drawing it might even be better to do the portrait by hand, but copying the style of engraved lines is very tricky unless done in considerable oversize.
May I suggest that it is considerably easier to produce colour banding effects using gradients in Photoshop. Copy Illy line work into Photoshop, lock layer transparency and colour with gradients. To do things correctly you will need 4 gradients - one for each offset separation plate - for each side of the note. Calculating the colour range for each plate will prove much more work that you suspect. And remember that each gradient should run the whole width of the note and only horizontally.
Depending on how real you want your "banknote" to look I suspect you need to study security printing carefully before you embark on this job.

  • Resizing widgets in Belle?

According to Nokia sources and articles for example on Thenokiablog.com, widgets in Belle are resizable. But I have Belle now on my C6-01 and all I can do is move widgets around on my screen but not resize them?
For a widget like the calendar that is very bad because there is only 1 line vissible with 1 time in it. Calender widget is has become totally useless because it's way and way to small but it can not be resized?
Also the time is WAY to big there and also can not be resized?

    Thanx.
Wondering why they just keep on adverting with resizable widgets then?
And that also means that widgets like the Calendar are totally and utterly useless

  • My Photoshop CS6 Bugs, Ideas and other things

First of all, great job on many new features like: Dashed strokes, Styles for your Character and Paragraphs, Background saving.
I'm a webdesigner and I am using it now this whole morning and midday. So far so good, install went fine, working perfectly. But below a list of features I miss and a list of bugs or some other things I miss.
    - Changing the opacity of a layer from any number to 100% doesnt work with the numeric pad
    - Great job on the styles for typography, but why not doing the same thing for colors/swatches. You can make your own swatch library and you can attach that color to any object, shape, whatever. What would be really handy if you change that color in the swatches it would affect all objects who share that swatch. Really missing that feature a long time!
    - Still missing external use of images/psd's/ any format. That I can place in my document, for example a psd, and when I change the original psd it would also automaticly update the placed object. It's like using a library like Fireworks.
    - I like it when I drag my documents into photoshop, but when I drag a PSD to Photoshop it will open as a smartobject into the file wich was open, not as a new window. You can only achieve that by dragging it outside of the document, more like dragging it onto the option bars... Imo that's irritating.
    - If you make a vector shape, it creates a path. If you select the shape it will show the path outlines around the shape. When you apply layer effects on the shape the shape is still selected, so you will see the path outlines around the shape. It's very annoying when you apply a stroke around the object it still showing the outline of the path around it. In CS4 (don't know about CS5) you could deselect the layer, then double click the effects icon on the layer and it will popu the layer styles menu without showing the outline of the path, in CS6 that doesnt work anymore.
I try to update this once in a while

So i finally started using the trial photoshop 6 and the first thing I notice, (that was wrong with 5.5) is that the zoom is zagged! Why must it zoom in large increments using the magic mouse? How it is possible to work with images zooming (very clunky) is beyond me. Photoshop 4 is fine. Nice and smooth when I'm using the finger scroll like a wel tuned machine, but then in the newest and greatest editions, it works like smashing the throttle to pull forward an inch!
This is crazy that something as basic as this is not addressed. Thank god that I can use the lasso tool and the zoom with scroll wheel again in this version (didn't work in 5.5) but hopefully this get s addressed. I really don't want to have to suffer through this when the newest final version is out.
Also, ( I assume this will be fixed in the final version) all of my preferences get reset everytime i open it. That is annoying.
So far I like the new look and it is much better than 5, but the basic things should work!  I'm also not used to the tools not lining up with the cursors the same way. The lasso tool used to line up with the actual lasso, but now they line up with the arrow. Makes sense, but will take some getting used to.
    PLEASE FIX THE ZOOM!

  • Doing Other Things While iDVD is Rending

    Hi,
Is it true that "while iDVD is processing the munu, slideshow, and films, do not do other things on your iMac."
The reason is that if you do other things while iDVD is processing, the film will not be smooth.
    Thanks.

    Hi JhnD
Welcome to apple discussions. For the most part this is not true. I work daily on other apps while iDvd is burning to disc or encoding my dvd without ill affects. Nevertheless it is recommended not to run multiple apps with slower clock speeds /CPU while burning a dvd to avoid possible errors or even a crash due to CPU overload. Just use reasonable caution and monitor all activity on the activity monitor within your utilities folder. If you notice a spike in usage of the CPU above 90% then it may be time to start quitting other apps other than iDvd and allow it to finish encoding on its own without any interruptions.
Or a better suggestion .... allow iDvd to do it's thing overnight (if it happens to be a longer project).

  • Can Time Capsule be used for both Time Machine back-up and a place to store other things?

I thought I had heard that it was best to keep whatever external drive you use for Time Machine to be exclusive for Time Machine back-ups. Does Time Capsule automatically partition an area for Time Machine. Also, since Time Machine auto deletes some things when the external drive gets full, does it just keep backing up until it fills the Time Capsules 2 TB or whatever the space is? Thanks in advance for help.

It does not partition the drive but creates a sparse bundle which acts as a sealed directory.
You can store other things on the TC. Just create a new directory for your stuff.
The TC needs to have at least 2 or 3 times the space used by your hard disks in all your computers. So it can manage a full backup plus the hourly incrementals.. !! It can take a long time to fill up if you don't change stuff around much.. or it could fill up relatively quickly if you constantly load files in and out.
Remember though a TC is not a NAS, it has no mirror and if the TC is the only copy of some files you are storing on it, and the TC breaks down, then those files are lost.
I have seen others suggest it is better to use a USB hdd connected to the TC to store files you want access to. Balance between storage and backup won't be that difficult. If the TC is becoming full, make a decision about where you want to store those other files.

touch screen does not work on my ipod when playing music on itunes, but works fine on every other thing on ipod, can anyone help or what is the cause

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

  • Mac Pro crashing on shutdown (and some other things)

The following behavior began about 4 or 5 days ago...
Mac Pro crashes/freezes every time I shutdown (or Restart).  Some process seems to be not quitting on shutdown - the screen goes blue and I get the spinning beachball. It'll just hang like that indefinitely.  To get it to shut down, I have to hold the power button for several seconds.  After starting up again, the machine *mostly* runs fine, but there are some apps/services that either just don't do anything, or causes the Mac to hang, or get into a funk state. These other things that seem to destabilize it include:
Apple menu > About this Mac: nothing happens (no dialog)
iTunes: dock icon just bounces, iTunes never launches
System Prefs > Accounts > Login items: System Prefs hangs. Force quit allows Prefs to open again.
Some apps/services also cause things to hang:
Activity Monitor: quitting some processes causes Actvity Monitor to freeze
Clicking SOHO Notes (tab alonmg the edge of the monitor) results in spinning beachball
Rolling over Linotype FontExplorer in the Dock causes the Dock to freeze, FontExporer never opens
There are probably other things that would make it hang, I have not gone looking for them all
    System details:
Mac Pro 4,1 .66 ghz, 8 GB RAM
    Mac OSX 10.6.8
Dual monitors, two internal hard drives (internal; drive A, internal drive B), multiple external FW hard drives attached
I have already done the following:
Disk Utility: Verified and Repaired Disk Permissions
Disk Utility: Verified Disk, Repaired Disk - this found errors, and suggested reformat/reinstall
I have already booted off internal drive B and ran Disk Utility, then restarted and booted off internal drive A again.  No difference.
I have Time Machine backups on an external 1 TB FW drive.
Late last night, I restarted, inserted my original Snow Leopard DVD, launched the MacOSX installer. Recovered a prior system by choosing Utilities > Restore System From Backup, selected a Time Machine backup a few days old (a day or two prior to the problem begining) on the external 1 TB FW drive, and initiated the restore.  The estimated restore time was about 5 hours, so I went to bed and let it run.  Got up early, and checked: it said the Restore operation was successful.  I was relieved.  But the same conditions continued - launching or rolling over the items listed above cause the same freeze/crash/hangs.  Hangs on shutdown, only way to kill things is the power button.  So now I'm disappointed.
I do have multiple backups of my data files across the external hard drives, but this is a large machine with a lot of stuff on it, and I'd really like to recover things wholesale, rather than having to reconstruct accounts and other things.  Before I go to bed tonight, I'm going to take another shot at recovering the system from a Time Machine backup - this time, I'll pick a backup that's from a full week before the problems started (the idea being that maybe the backup I picked last time was not far enough back from whatever incident caused all this).
If the week-old Time Machine backup works, great. But if not...any suggestions?
    Additional data points...
Nothing new was installed or updated (as far as I know, and I generally pay attention) in the days prior to the problem.
The last thing I recall doing on the computer before the problem began, was burning a DVD (using Toast) - something I do all the time. After that operation, I tried to shut down, and it froze.
The primary internal hard drive partition (internal drive A) seems to be the only one that's having trouble: if I reboot off of internal drive B, the problems do NOT occur - no hang on quit, etc.
That suggests it's not a hardware problem (logic board, etc.) but is something about the System on drive A.
It *could* be bad sectors on drive A - but I have some questions about that...
When I did the full system recovery via the MacOS installer (pulling the old system from Time machine), does the destination drive get reformatted? I don't recall being asked the usual partition/formatting questions.
When the installer does a system restore, does it do any integrity checking on the target drive, or does it just blindly lay down bits?
Does this "freeze on shutdown" (and related behaviors) sound familiar?
    Any tips/suggestions to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

    More info and a question...
Did another full restore (from a Time machine backup on an external drive) last night - picked a backup from from 10 days ago, long before things became problematic.  Still having the same issues.
So, I'm thinking the next thing to try is a low-level reformat of the internal drive(s) and then restore again.  I have a couple questions about the finer points of that...
I'm following the instructions in this KB document: Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system.
Inserting my original Snow Leopard DVD, launching the MacOS installer, restarting, in the installer choosing Restore System from Backup.  It appears that there is no re-formatting of the target drive in this case - it just over-writes.
    My questions...
The contents of the target drive are going to get wiped and overwritten anyway. Do I have anything to lose/to risk by reformatting FIRST (using Disk Utility), then booting off the install DVD and restoring then?
My 1 TB internal drive is partitioned into the primary 750 GB partition (which is the problematic one) and a secondary 250 GB partition (which boots and runs fine).  The secondary partition has some data I would prefer not to lose.  I assume that if want to do a full reformat of the internal drive, that means the whole drive - both partitions - will be wiped (that is, I cant reformat just one partition on a single physical drive without reformatting the second partition).  Correct?
I suppose I can back up the data that resides on the second partition to an additional external drive (I have extras) if needed - not a huge deal.
Do my new partition sizes need to exactly match the sizes of the original partitions?  Neither is completely full, but I want to make sure that I will be able to restore the system and contents of the primary partition even if the new partition size is not bit-by-bit the exact same size as the old partition (I assume the new partition size just needs to be large enough to hold the backup - correct?).
So....I'm looking at the following sequence:
Back up the data I want off the secondary partition to an external drive
Boot off the Snow Leopard install DVD
Run Disk Utility and reformat (fully erase) the internall 1 TB drive
Partition that 1 TB internal drive to (more or less) the two previous (about) 750 GB + 250 GB partitions
Restore a recent Time Machine backup (from an external FW drive) to partition #1
Reasonable plan?  Anything I'm missing here?  Any other steps I should take?
    Thanks for any help.

  • My performance is very slow when I run graphs. How do I increase the speed at which I can do other things while the data is being updated and displayed on the graphs?

I am doing an an aquisition and displaying the data on graphs. When I run the program it is slow. I think because I have the number of scans to read associated with my scan rate. It takes the number of seconds I want to display on the chart times the scan rate and feeds that into the number of samples to read at a time from the AI read. The problem is that it stalls until the data points are aquired and displayed so I cannot click or change values on the front panel until the updates occur on the graph. What can I do to be able to help this?

It may also be your graphics card. LabVIEW can max the CPU and you
screen may not be refreshing very fast.
