Widgets issues with recent install of Mountain Lion on my iMac.

Since installing Mountain Lion my screen periodically locks up an shifts to the right. I noticed along the left a charcoal background with large dot pattern was showing while the screen was shifted and locked to the right. Then a few times the widgets screen popped up on its own and I realized the background matched what I was seeing when the lock ups happen (I have never used the widgets). So it appears the Widgets screen keeps trying to launch spontainiously. I did notice the Fetch widget had an alert on it and with some investigation found that Fetch Works no longer had a widget for Mountain Lion, so I just deleted it. This I thought fixed the bug but now today the shifting and locking up has started again.  I did take the machine in to have a Genius run a diagnostic because of the hard drive issue with the iMacs but he said all looked fine and reinstalled Mountain Lion while I was there to see if that helped.. but it did not. Has anyone else run into this? If so, were you able to fix it? it actually just happened twice while I was typing this and I had to sit and wait for it to not be locked up so I could complete...

You can use the Mountain Lion USB disk that you created or you can press Command and R keys on boot, but it will download OS X Mountain Lion from the Internet

My screen suddenly zooms too big without me touching anything (i.e. mouse or keyboard).  I can't reduce it.  Part of the menu reappears when I click at the very top, but I can't even get the red-yellow-green buttons to show.  I recently "upgraded" to mountain lion.  Did not have this problem in the past.  My settings appear to be correct.  Any suggestions?

Do those things show if you Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup)?

  • Anyone having RAM issues with Notes.app on Mountain Lion?

I have installed ML a couple different times. All is well except for Notes. Once Notes is running and after it has synced therough iCloud there is a process that continues to run named "com.apple.NotesMigratorService" and it gobbles up RAM until there is no space left on the drive. The last time I watched in Activit Monitor and killed it but within a few minutes it would start up again. Currently, after running Notes, killing the process twice then quitting Notes, and now some 20 minutes later, I have ...
    183,217 Page Ins
    4,380,504 Page Outs
Last time all the drive got eaten I had ...
    687,422 Page Ins
    15,363,792 Page Outs
    MacBook Pro (early 2011)
    2.2 GHz i7
    8 GB RAM

This issue is a big problem on my Mac, I can only imagine that it's affecting many more people than the few who've posted in this forum. 'timothylance' has indicated that Apple has contacted him and they're running diagnostics/addressing the issue. I certainly hope so.
This problem is affecting my early 2009/dual quad-core Mac Pro. I had two notes on my iPhone before I installed Mountain Lion. The notes were sync'd to my Mac, two MacBook Pros, and my iPad. I installed ML on my two MacBook Pros, and didn't notice any problems.
When I finally installed ML on my Mac Pro, I noticed a lot of hard drive activity. Applications were locking up left and right (I was running out of RAM). Eventually I had to kill a bunch of applications, and the hard drive activity was still high. I restarted the computer and had the same problems. Eventually, a window pops up stating that you've run out of 'disk space'. I checked the Activity monitor and saw that the 'com.apple.NotesMigratorService' had eaten up all my available Real (RAM) and Virtual Memory (Hard disk space availabe to use as Virtual RAM/swap space).
You can use the 'Activity Monitor' application to locate and Force Kill (quiting doesn't seem to work/help) the 'com.apple.NotesMigratorService'. This should immediately frees up the Real and Virtual memory being eaten up by this process. A Force Kill also stops the process from restarting, until you launch/restart one of the applications which triggers the activation of this 'com.apple.NotesMigratorService' process.
So far (in my experience), it seems that the following actions trigger the activation of the 'com.apple.NotesMigratorService'
    - Launching the Notes application.
    - Launching the System Preferences application and accessing the iCloud preference. (Note: My Notes preference in the iCloud pane is checked/synched, but I can't get Mail checked/synched via iCloud. This may be unrelated/a different problem.)
    - Launching the System Preferences application and accessing the Mail, Contacts & Calendars preference.
(FYI - In Safari 6.0 the bulleted list view doesn't display properly. The paragraph above was drafted/originally posted as a bulleted list, but appears without any indentation or list bullets when viewed in Safari 6.0. I edited it to add hyphens and hard breaks to simulate a list view.)
Hopefully Apple will patch this soon. I find it extremely annoying that I have to continuously monitor my 'Activity Monitor' to watch for this process. If I find additional triggers for the process, I'll reply to my entry here.

  • Issues with recently installed quicktime

I will admit having the occassional crashing issue with premiere, but since in installed the newest version of quicktime (I believe it's 7.4) premiere holds out for about an HOUR maybe! if I'm lucky, usually if i attempt anything audio editing, it crashes and I'm back to square one.
it seems to hold for exporting files (through the media encoder or to AVI) but the second one attempts to do any editing, extending or shortening clips, down it goes with that lovely "Premiere has experienced an unknown error and will attempt to save your project" (Which it doesn't).
Given I'm working with a large project it is annoying for the 20 minute pause for it to re-load, only to have it go down a few minutes later.
    It doesn't matter the scene/sequence I'm editing.
I do need quicktime for some of the projects I'm working on right now, but if it's the cause of this issue...I'm not sure sure it's viable.
I've uninstalled it, and I'm going to give it a run for the night see if that helps, but if it doesn't, any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    H.R. Crystal

Thanks Jon. I'm going to go download and install 6.5.2 now.
I JUST LOVE! how everyone tells you to have the most up to date Quicktime, but ack! seems to cause issues.
I'll see if this fixes my issues.
Appreciated the note on the version.

  • How do you fix the issues with the OS X mountain lion? Screen freezes pages just swipe on own

Having issues with the lion operating system

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

It worked before I upgraded. I've tried modifing the tftp.plist file a couple of times and verified permissions on all the folders. I'm not sure why it's not working.

  • Canon 860 Series (Pixma) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips

After spending several hours sorting out Canon Pixma OSX problems here are my thoughts:
Canon 860 Series (Pixma 868) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips
    Problem:
    - New imac and MacBook Pro 2012 (OSX 10.8.2) had a problem using Canon Pixma 868 printer on network and would not scan or print using Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print), which has advanced scanning and photo printing functions.
    - When I connected the canon printer to my imac, OSX 10.8.2 automatically downloaded and installed drivers for Canon 860 series printer. I could then add the new printer (select ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”) and printer would work while connected via USB but could not get to print or scan over network wifi.
    - The original Canon 860 Series CD does not work with 10.8 and the manual / online instructions did not make sense (as based on CD install).
    Solution:
    1) Install Canon Printer Drivers and Software (from official Canon site)
Go to canon support site, review FAQ, then download and install following Pixma 860 Series software & drivers for OSX 10.8 (links see below). The version I downloaded is in brackets but check for updated version. Full instructions are below.
Canon 860 Series Drivers & Software  for OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion:
The base software and drivers needed for using Canon 860 Series on Mac OS X 10.8 (USB) are
    1 Printer Driver
(Canon MX860 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.67.1.0 (03-Aug-2012))
    2 Scanner Driver
(Canon MX860 series Scanner Driver Ver. 14.11.4a (03-Aug-2012))
    3 Network Tool
(Canon IJ Network Tool Ver. 4.1.0 for Intel Mac (27-Dec-2012)
Canon Software for using advanced printing and scanning functions (while connected to network)
    4 Solution Menu
    (Canon Solution Menu Ver. 1.4.1 (27-Jul-2012 ))
    5 MP Navigator EX
(Canon MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 (02-Auf-2012))
    6 Easy-PhotoPrint EX
    (Canon Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver. 4.1.6 (21-Jan-2013 ))
Canon Support (HK) – check your local site
    http://www.canon.com.hk/en/download/main/index.do
Select Product and drivers from support site eg http://support-hk.canon-asia.com/
    1. Choose a product category
    Multifunctional Printers
    2. Choose a product series
      Pixma
    3. Choose a product model
      Pixma MX868
    4. Choose type of document
    Downloads or FAQ
If you have problems installing the software under 10.8, see the FAQ on Canon site. You will need to allow software installs from “unidentified developers by using “Control” Key or by changing your system preferences)
    2) Check Canon Printer and Software Working while connected via USB
Once you have downloaded and installed drivers and software and restarted computer, check that the printer and Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print) are working via USB.  Open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App) and make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it shows the correct SSID Wifi settings (under the Canon IJ Network Tool App ‘Setup menu’).  This is normally done as part of the automatic install but worth double checking
    3) Add new network printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”).
After you have checked USB printing turn off printer, unplug the USB cable and shutdown the Canon IJ Network Tool App.
Then turn the printer back on and wait 30s. Then add a new printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”). Once you select “+” (add new printer), wait 10-30s for the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer to appear in the new window eg Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) (Kind: “Canon IJ Network”)
DO NOT ADD THE MX 860 SERIES BONJOUR SCANNER (the Bonjour Scanner is the built-in software, is not needed and often appears first on the add printer list).  The Canon scanner can be accessed used through the MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 software (which has much better functions)
You will now have two Printer Canon MX860 (USB) and Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network). Set the Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network) as default and test print and scan
If the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer does not appear, check the printer and make sure that the printer can see the wifi network. On the printer select Menu / Settings / Device Settings / Lan Settings / WLAN Setting List.  It should say WLAN Active, identify the SSID and have an IP address
If the printer can not see the Wifi Network, plug the USB cable back in, then open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App). Make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it has your SSID settings (under setup), if it has this info, restart the computer and the printer and try again

  • While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?

While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?
Originally I was running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion. I created a backup in Time Machine, performed a clean install of Mountain Lion, then I proceeded to use Time Machine to restore the back up.
When thinking about the essence of a back up restore, it occurrs to me that for all I know, I may have just wated my time IF Time Machine also restores all the old unneeded files that remain from Lion after an upgrade.
Since the backup was made while running Mountain Lion as an upgrade from Lion, did restoring this backup defeat the purpose of a clean install by reinstalling old Lion files?
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?
    -Chris

    Hello John!
Thank you for your response which solved my problem. For other users who may stumble upon this, I'll clear up the confusion and share how I solved the problem with your help; When looking for answers to my computer problems, finding unresolved questions where person B offers a solution and person A never comes back and says "That worked, thank you.", it demonstrates a "k-thnx-bye" user mentality that leaves others with the same problem lost. Without further ado:
It is not clear what you did because the meaning of "clean install" is vague. You can erase a volume and install an OS which leaves none of its previous content intact,
This is what I did: I erased the volume leaving no previous content intact, while then installing OS X Mountain Lion.
or you can upgrade an existing OS (or reinstall the same one) which does not alter your user - installed files.
An upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion is what I started with initially before erasing anything. This was undesirable. Since this can cause Macs to run slower (especially whereas I'm using a mid-2011 Mac Mini), my goal was to go from operating within an upgrade to Mountain Lion, to operating within an installation of Montain Lion that was not preceded by any other oprating system.
Hence a "clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files" is confusing.
Well put and understood. What I should have said was:
    1.Erase the volume
    2.Install Mountain Lion clean
3.Confirm that Mountain Lion is functioning properly
4.Proceed to use either Time Machine or Migration Assistant to Import/Migrate/Copy over only two things; My old apps (That had been stored originally in the designated Applications folder) and all files and folders originally stored in the home folder under users.
If you restore from a Time Machine backup then all modifications that occurred subsequent to that backup become erased. It renders moot any OS X upgrade performed subsequent to that backup.
That makes sense and is just as I later suspected.
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?
    Yes.
This is what I did and everything works perfectly. Thank you so much once again!

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.

Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • Help with a clean install of Mountain Lion on a 2008 iMac

Hi, i'm doing a clean install of Mountain Lion on my 2008 iMac.  My question is whether or not i have to install the disk that came with my computer first or can i just boot up from the mountain lion OS Bootable flash driveI made?  In the past I usually use the disc that came with my computer first and upgrade from there, but not sure if it is necessary. thanks
also not even sure i still have the original disc taht came with it.

You can use the Mountain Lion USB disk that you created or you can press Command and R keys on boot, but it will download OS X Mountain Lion from the Internet

It should work, but it's an unmitigated mess. Simplest is to boot into recovery mode and reinstall the OS.

  • HT3258 I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion OS 10.8.3. After that, I've had innumerable problems with email & none of the documents in Word are openable - a dialog box pops up saying that no Power PC applications are available, or something to that effect

I will re-enter my question: I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion OS 10.8.3. Since then I've had difficulty accessing my Verizon email. Also, all of my Word documents are no longer openable. I get a dialog box that says Power PC apps are no longer supported. Have any of you experienced this & if so, have you just had to "bite the bullet" & start re-doing your docs in Page?

Office 2004 is not compatible with Lion or Mountain Lion because they don't include the Rosetta software that allowed PPC apps to run on Intel hardware.
Office 2008 was the first version of Office designed to run natively on Intel chips.
Office 2011 is the current version.
You can update to Office 2011, Office 2004 was introduced 9 years ago. You can use other 3rd party softwares, i.e., iWorks, Office Libre, etc., that are capable of handling Office documents.
Or, you can revert back to Snow Leopard.
All in all, this topic has been covered in these forums almost every day since Lion was introduced 2 years ago.
Please search the forums for more info.

  • Clean install of Mountain Lion and permissions issue

I'm doing a clean install of Mountain Lion and after the initial install I noticed that all of my disk volumes (and their contents) showed the owner as "Fetching...." (though I still had access because the "staff" group has read/write access.
Doing a search, I learned that this means that the new system doesn't recognize the user id (UID) of these files/folders.
I know why. In my old system, I set up a second administrative user when I was troubleshooting a Snow Leopard problem, and just started using the new user (and eventually deleted the troublesome one).
So, the UID for my Snow Leopard user (which created all these files and folders on my other volumes, including my Time Machine volume) has UID = 502.  The new ML user I set up has UID = 501.  That's why when booted into ML all the owners are "Fetching..."
The question is how to fix this.  I see three options:
    1.  Don't worry about it, as I have access.  But I have read that having the OS constantly trying to figure out the owner of files can be a drag on system speed
    2.  Use chown to change all the ownership of all my files on the various volumes
    3.  Set up a new administrative user on ML (that will presumably have UID=502) and delete the other user (with UID = 501)
[And yes, I did try repairing permissions with Disk Utility, but that doesn't affect volumes other than the boot volume, of course]
    Thanks to all.

    @macjack...
Thanks for your response.  I did exactly what you suggested when I set things up.  I installed ML, rebooted, and it of course booted into Setup Assistant.  I used SA to migrate.  The permissions in the User directory and the boot volume were just fine.  It's the other volumes (Time Machine, data volumes, backup volumes, etc.) that have the owner showing "Fetching...."  and that's because when I installed ML, the first user setup was assigned UID = 501 while all these files/folders were created by a (Snow Leopard) user with UID = 502.
