Widgets on the Desktop

Hi all,
I've been bugged about this for several releases of the OS now, but still I haven't found a solution.
I am trying to find a way to allow a widget to remain on the desktop, BEHIND open windows. I know the
defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
trick gets me half way (ie: the widget is removed from Dashboard and placed on the desktop), yet it remains floating above all windows.
Does anyone know of a way to achieve this?
Cheers

The free WidgetRunner app allows you to specify whether each widget should float on top, act like a normal window, or be pinned to the desktop:

  • Why can't I actually put widgets on the desktop?

Why can't I actually put widgets on the desktop and have stay on the desktop; not float on top of all my programs so I can’t see what I am doing?
I know there are a few widgets that claim to do this, but they don’t! (Dashit)
Here is the main problem that I have with Dashit; it doesn’t go on the desktop, it floats on top of every program and you can’t make it actually put it on the Desktop! This makes this little widget useless! Why can’t anybody make a widget that actually puts the widgets on the desktop?
What use is it if the darn things just float on top of every program? This just gets in the way. Dose anyone know of a widget or a way to actually put the widgets on the desktop?

Garret, the only way to put Dashboard widgets on the desktop and select the level they live in (so they don't float over everything) is to use either Amnesty Widget Browser or Amnesty Singles. Both are shareware.

  • I can't get any widgets onto the Desktop in Lion (10.7.2) even with devmode on. Any ideas anyone?

    So, new on the forum.
The problem is, that My sister baught a new iMac 27" with Lion preinstalled and we then updated it to 10.7.2.
Then she wanted the world clock from dashboard to desktop to stay and we found instructions how to do it with dashboard devmode made on in terminal.
    But.. it just doesn't work.
We just can't get any widget onto the desktop not for a short time, not for stay.
    Does anyone any ideas.
The third party software is not what we are looking dfor..
In the meantime, my mom baught a new iMac 21,5" with Lion and updated it to 10.7.2.
On this machine the widget instructions work fine!
What can be the difference between these two?

The Class.forName method throws a class not found exception, so ...as the compiler has told you ...you need to catch it or otherwise handle it.
It "must be caught, or declared to be thrown".
    try {
      Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
    }catch (ClassNotFoundException cnfe) {
      System.out.println(cnfe.toString());
    }Here, I have 'caught' it.

  • Keep Dashboard Widgets on the Desktop

I have a TBD and a MBP, and use both displays. I want to put Dashboard widgets on the MBP desktop.
Found some code to write in Terminal to do this:
    defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
and then re-start the Dock by
    killall Dock
That worked, but now my F4 Dashboard key doesn't work, and I can't put any more Widgets on the desktop. Something must be wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With Dashcode made available, widget development is already 'on the desktop' (i.e. readily available). If you simply want the widget to be on your desktop then I don't know what else you can do.

  • Widget on the desktop

    Hi
I have managed to get the Weather widget on the desktop. Now, how can I get it not to appear when I open an application, as "not always on top".
    thanks

Because you are using the "devmode" trick to move the widget to desktop, it is impossible for you to move it behind any of your applications -- it will always remain on top.
The only way to put a widget on the desktop AND control what layer it appears in is to use the shareware products Amnesty Widget Browser or Amnesty Singles. With these products, you can place the Weather widget on the desktop and make it "not always on top."

  • Using widgets on the desktop

Some large display iMac users may want to use Dashboard widgets on the desktop. There are commercial applications to do this, but for a new, free app, WidgetRunner is worth a look. It allows you to specify whether each widget should float on top, act like a normal window, or be pinned to the desktop:

    Hello fortworth
Have a look at Amnesty or Amnesty Singles in the following Macworld article for *Turning widgets into applications*:

  • How can I take a widget to the desktop

I would like to take a widget to my desktop ¿Is it possible to do it in Lion?
I´ve done it before in Snow Leopard but it does not work anymore
    Cheers!

    Assuming you are using iPhoto....
You want to select the event that has the photo in it then click once on the photo so it is highlighted with a yellow ring around it and then click and drag it to the desktop.
If you are finding it difficult to move the file that way you can select the picture in iPhoto and select
File > Export (Command + Shift + E) and select how you want to export it (format) and where you want to put it .
    Hopefully this helps you.

  • How do I get dashboard widgets on the desktop again?

I used to have the stock ticker widget on my desktop all the time, but after I upgraded it disappeared. I used to be able to go into dashboard, clock and hold on a widget, then exit dashboard, and the widget would move to my desktop. Where/why has this functionality gone?

Symantec have released updates for Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security to make them compatible with Firefox 4, for details see http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Firefox-4-compatibility-hotfix-is-now-available/td-p/428894

  • How 2 put desktop widget in the background?

i have managed to put widget on the desktop from the dashboard. now i want to know...
    a) how to put the widget in the background? it remains on top all the time.
    b) how to have 'space' specific widgets. right now all of them appear in all spaces.
    thanks
    Neerav

haha! i thought it was a hidden secret until google told be otherwise.
btw, i am not sure if u understand my question. i want the widgets to stay on the desktop but not on top of all other applications. it should come on top only when i select it.
rebooting still maintains the widgets i transfered to the desktop to stay there, which is good, but, they always remain on top, which i don't want.

  • HT2492 Clicking on different widget than the one previously used, brings me back to Desktop?

    Hello,
I have a problem where if I click on a widget other than the one I previously used, I am taken back to my Desktop. I then have to open dashboard again, to get to the widget i want. I can now use the widget i initially wanted, but clicking on a different widget starts the cycle again. This is really annoying me. How can i fix this?
By the way, I am running 10.7.3 and I am up to date on all Mac updates.
    Thank-you,
    krm1897

this one is actually a really rare symptom of a flaky connection to the ipod on a Windows PC. there's more going on in terms of hardware on nanos and 5th gens than in the earlier models ... so if the connection is flaky to precisely the right/wrong degree, itunes will see the ipod, but misidentify it as an earlier version of ipod.
tracking down the cause of the flakiness can be tricky ... as you already know ...
just checking. have you tried connecting with a different (known-good) USB cable? does that seem to have any impact on the rate of occurence of the problem?

  • How do I moves the widgets from the dashboard to the desktop?

How do I move my widgets from the dashboard to the desktop?

Yes, you can. All you need to do is do a Spotlight search for Terminal and open the application Terminal. After launching Terminal, type the following:
    defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
Then hit return. Nothing will happen. The next step is to type the following command into Terminal:
    killall dock
Then press return. Your dock will disappear momentarily.
Once your dock reappears, press F12 (the keyboard command to bring up Dashboard). Then begin dragging the widget that you would like to have on your desktop. Continue dragging it—don't let to—and press F12 again. Voila! It's on your desktop. You can get it off by dragging it and pressing F12, just like you do to get it on.
    Hope that helps! :)
