Wierd format when turning on mac

Yesterday i had a presentatinon on shool whit my mac, and I used a thunderbolt to VGA adapter. As usually, when I put it in, the format on the mac shrincs, so it fits to the powerpoint stuff. When I was done, I unplugged the adapter, but the format didnt change back, so I just turned it off. When I turned it on later, the format was still shrinced, but after about 15 seconds, the screen flashed in some different colors, and turned normal. This happends every time I turn it on, but when I have logge in it is normal.
How do I fix it?

The default (not logged in) PRAM profile is probably stuck on scaled display. If you go into System Preferences and Display and set it to Scaled and then back to Best Fit and reboot and the problem doesn't go away, then look up how to do a PRAM reset. This will reset all the basic settings for backlight, sound, display, etc. Won't cause you to lose any data, but just resets these settings back to the normal ones.
Next time, DO NOT restart your laptop or shut it down without making sure the screen scaling is back to where it needs to be after you unplug an external display from it.

I can't seem to reproduce the bold/highlighted link thing over here on my end. I have loaded your page on my Safari as well as on a PC using IE and FireFox. All looks okay.
Perhaps try emptying your browser cache and reload the page. Maybe this will clear some cobwebs and let you see the page properly. Good luck!

Moving iPhoto to external drive; have formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), moved the iPhoto library to external drive; when trying to change the library, the iPhoto file on new external is greyed out can't be selected.What went wrong?

Must have done something wrong..
1. formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - required a partition, but that went fine. Entire new external disk was included in the partition formatted to Mac OS Extneded (journaled).
2. moved iPhoto library to new external disk
3. Holding Option key down, opened iPhoto
4. Choose library feature appeared, however when new library function option appeared and "choose library" selected, the iPhoto folder appearing in the new external drive was greyed out and not able to be selected. Therefore the default library remains the original iphoto library on the Mac.
I've moved the original iphoto library to the trash and then tried to start iPhoto. A message comes up that the iPhoto is in the trash and needs to be pulled out before iPhoto can start (clearly the new iphoto library on the external drive is not being seen.
Can anyone suggest where I went awry? Thanks!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
Then try select it again.

I turned my mac book pro off with a cd in the drive and when i turned the mac back on it will not boot up. I was able to get disk out by holding the finger pad down.

I can hold the option key at start up and choose my network, then Internet recovery shows up with an arrow pointing up. When I click on the arrow Internet recovery fails and all I get is a globe with a triangle on it with an exclamation mark on it, and under that it says

I just want to add to this, in case someone else searches for this error on Apple Support (google doesnt cover apple support.. how clever is that?)
I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
It was Ram for me..

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.

At a first glance, their website is optimized for Windows only, it displays badly in Safari, perhaps it would be better in Firefox or other browser.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If 10.7.0 or later...

Press the power button down to force a emergency hardware shutdown and hold the option/alt key down and reboot
If you see your OS X boot partition, then click it and the arrow, head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and reset it. Done.

If no OS X boot volume appears in Startup Manager, then OS X is corrupted.
Try more of the Steps above (like 1-8) then if that doesn't work.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Once you got your data off, erase and reinstall OS X onto the MacintoshHD partition and then restore from TimeMachine or bootable clone if you have it. or build new and return users files from the data recovery drive.

If the drive doesn't appear in Disk Utility it might be dead or there are further complications let us know for further assistance.

... and that you have not checked the box "Reopen windows when logging back in"?
... and Word, Excel etc are not included in the items listed in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items?

How do you transfer files from mac to word pc for school? Paper keeps changing format when professor opens it on PC

I have Word 2011 on Mac 10.6.8. I write my papers and save them as .docx I submit them to my school online but every time My professor opens them he says the margins are set wrong. He said to save them as a Word-Pc format. How do I do this? Do I save it as RTF or as PDF? He has to be able to make comments on the paper after along the right side. I can not ask him to download anything t make it easier for me. I should be the one doing it correctly. I just do not know how. Can you please tell me how I should be saving my papers so that they do not change format when he opens them on his PC?
And I do recheck and open and repen my paper to check and recheck my margins before I submit it and all is fine on my end.

If it is directly connected to your Mac via USB or FireWire, Time Machine will include it in the backup.
