Wierd java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError (not in MAIN!!!)

hi,
i'm working on an open source java program for sharing legal bootlegs of band's shows (http://www.furthurnet.org). Anyway, after the client runs for a while, something goes afoul. The symptoms are:
press a gui button, which uses a callback -- nothing occurs
stderr prints (among others classes w/ same error):java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: furi/RemoteFile
at furi.Search.processResponse(Search.java:156)
at furi.MsgManager.processQueryResponse(MsgManager.java:218)
at furi.ReadWorker.handleQueryResponse(ReadWorker.java:758)
at furi.ReadWorker.processIncomingData(ReadWorker.java:358)
at furi.ReadWorker.run(ReadWorker.java:154)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:534)
As you can see, this client runs multi-threaded, in fact, there are quite a few threads running at any given time. The codebase for this is quite old, and thus quite a mess. The interesting thing is, apparently, many of the other threads continue to run fine.
Another note: I've not seen other folks w/ the client reporting the same problem (but the client is buggy & the users may be conditioned to ignore :) ). I suspect that there is a memory leak or something goofing up the VM, but what do I know?
Also, i've seen it occur on 2 of my computers, both running linux (fedora core 1)
Here are my specs:
I'm running fedora core 1 - 2.4.22-1.2188.nptl
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_04-b05)
java -Dfurthur.syscfgdir=/home/jonco/.furthur/ -jar /home/jonco/bin/Furthur.jar
note: my CLASSPATH is currently blank (but i thought that since it ran from .jar, it didn't matter) -- it is also blank on my other computer as well.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
jonathan

The cause of the error is the same regardless of in which thread it happens: a class that is needed to run the program could not be found. The error message says exactly which class: furi.RemoteFile.
Is that class included in the .jar file /home/jonco/bin/Furthur.jar ?

  • Simple but wierd java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError with jar file

    I'm using ant to jar my .class files. My final objective is to create an executable jar. When I run my jar file - "java -jar PM.jar" - I get:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: pm/PMApp
    This at least tells me that java found my MANIFEST.MF class and that is the correct class it should be looking for, but it doesn't seem to find the class. But when I do - "jar -tf PM.jar" - I get:
    C:\mike\pm\execs>jar -tf PM.jar
    META-INF/
    META-INF/MANIFEST.MF
    pm/
    pm/EasterEgg.class
    pm/JMSMessageListener.class
    pm/PMApp.class
    pm/ReleasePlanTest.class

    pm/SystemArchitectureFrame$3.class
    pm/SystemArchitectureFrame$4.class

    pm/SystemArchitectureFrame$7.class
    pm/SystemArchitectureFrame$8.class
    pm/SystemArchitectureFrame.class
    pm/SystemArchitecturePanel.class
    Which shows me that the class is there. I suspected that it might have something to do with CLASSPATH at first because of the java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError, but now I am skeptical that that could be the problem. I even build a new jar file out of different classes to make sure my method was OK and that worked fine. Any ideas? Thanks for your help in advance.

    Here is my Manifest:
    Main-Class: pm.PMApp<carriage return>
    Class-Path: C:/j2sdkee1.3.1/lib/j2ee.jar<carriage return>
    I noticed that if I leave the Class-Path variable unset it has no problem finding the class pm/PMApp, but I then get a class loader error concerning J2EE stuff. Am I missing something in my Class-Path? I tried to even specify the jar file I'm running here, but that didn't work either? I have also tried '.' and './', space delimited in my Class-Path, like this:
    Class-Path: . ./ C:/j2sdkee1.3.1/lib/j2ee.jar<carriage return>
    Thanks for the replies, do you have any more suggestions?

  • Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError

    Am using java 1.3.1 on Red Hat Linux 7.1
    i get this error
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
    while running a simple program HelloWorld.java
    help

    When you use the "java" command, the only required argument is the name of the class that you want to execute. This argument must be a class name, not a file name, and class names are case sensitive. For example, "java HelloWorld.java" won't work because the class name isn't HelloWorld.java, it's HelloWorld. Similarly, "java helloworld" won't work because a class defined as "public class HelloWorld {" is not named helloworld due to case sensitivity. Finally, the .class file must be in a directory that is in the Classpath - that's where java.exe searches to find the file that contains the class.

  • On starting WebLogic getting Error : Listening for transport dt_socket at address: 8453 Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: vXmx512m

    Hi,
    system i am using for Oracle SOA is :
    Windows 64 Bit
    i5 Processor
    6 GB RAM
    29 GB on C Drive is already free after installation of all SOA related products.
    I have installed wlserver_10.3 for SOA 11g Development purpose and followed exact installation sequence and procedure as mention in oracle documentation
    i created domain also and every thing look correct but after installation procedure there are "Additional actions required just after every thing installed" :
    setting memory limit
    starting weblogic server (Admin Server)
    starting weblogic managed server
    and so on
    now Problem is when i execute C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\soa_div_domain\bin startWebLogic.cmd
    as mention in oracle documentation i am getting following error message : (i have only included last error lines instead of complete console log)
    oConsole= -Dweblogic.ext.dirs=C:\Oracle\MIDDLE~1\patch_wls1036\profiles\default\

    Could not find the main class: ++Xmx512m.  Program will exit.
    Now to resolve this what i already tried are :
    I change JAVA_HOME and PATH to jdk6 which came with web logic installer
    Location is at :
    JAVA_HOME : C:\Oracle\Middleware\jdk160_29
    PATH : C:\Oracle\Middleware\jdk160_29\bin
    The above dose not include any space between path
    I ran the startWebLogic.cmd and got same error
    After that I also added
    CLASSPATH : C:\Oracle\Middleware\jdk160_29\lib\tool.jar;C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3\server\lib\weblogic.jar;C:\Oracle\Middleware\jdk160_29\bin
    WL_HOME:  C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3
    I ran the startWebLogic.cmd and got same error
    I also used earlier path which I used with eclipse when I was working on other java development.
    JAVA_HOME : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_21
    PATH : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_21\bin
    I ran the startWebLogic.cmd and got same error
    Then I also gave PATH: C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3\server\lib      (including the existing one using ; )
    I ran the startWebLogic.cmd and got same error
    Now may be there is a file called setSOADomainEnv.cmd in
    < C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\soa_div_domain\bin\ setSOADomainEnv.cmd>
    That include some values for memory set :
    set JAVA_OPTIONS=%JAVA_OPTIONS%
    set DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS=-Xms512m –Xmx512m
    set PORT_MEM_ARGS=-Xms512m –Xmx768m
    if "%JAVA_VENDOR%" == "Oracle" goto OracleJVM
    set DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS=%DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS% -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=768m
    set PORT_MEM_ARGS=%PORT_MEM_ARGS% -XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=768m
    now as I change the red highlighted value to 512 value because I have less memory resource and I checked in installation documentation to change the above red highlighted value to 512 original is 1024 which is too high and it was crating problem and showing memory space problem so I change it to 512 and now I am not getting that memory space problem error but may be the above error is related with change value in setSOADomainEnv.cmd file or not
    Following are my domain, weblogic and soa home directory path and all these path are exactly what it suppose to be according to Oracle Installation Documentation:
    WebLogic :
    C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3
    C:\Oracle\Middleware\coherence_3.7
    C:\Oracle\Middleware\oepe_11.1.1.8.0
    SOA Oracle Home Directory :

    C:\Oracle\Middleware\Oracle_OSB1
    Domain name : soa_div_domain
    Domain Location :       C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains
    Application Location :  C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\applications
    Domain Location:        C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\soa_div_domain
    form here i am trying to start weblogic : C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\soa_div_domain\bin\startWebLogic.cmd
    Please tell me any body want more details.
    Thanks.

    I think you are missing a character '-'
    USER_MEM_ARGS="Xms512m -Xmx512m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m"Add this character like follows

    Thanks!

    Seems to be a CLASSPATH problem. Try:
    java -cp  .  ExampleProgramIt should help. (Beware there are three arguments, the . is the second.)
    Maybe you have a classpath variable set where the path doesn't contain the working directory (the "."). You may then consider adding it to the end.
    Hope it helps

    I'm assuming you're using JWSDP 1.6 as I see Fastinfoset.jar in your list. You are missing some jar files in your classpath there. The best way to know what you need is to look at the release notes for JWSDP 1.6. Since you're building a web serivce start with the table in there and lookup JAX-RPC. It'll show you what jar files are needed and what other libraries are needed. Now depending on what you're doing you don't really need all those.
    For sure you're missing jsr173_api.jar which is where I believe that class you need is located. This is in the JWSDP_1_6\sjsxp\lib directory. You will probably need the other jar thats in there too. Best bet is to follow the dependancy chart in the release notes.
    This should get you going.

What version of Windows are you running? autoexec.bat is used by 98. Others use the system variables. The classpath you show for autoexec.bat looks OK but the classpath you show for system variables looks wrong. It should be the same as what you show for autoexec.bat You do not need the sdk\bin directory in your classpath unless you plan to put classes there.
    The NoClassDefFound error means that the java.exe command could not find the class that you specified. You did not post the command that you entered. You may have specified the class wrong. Otherwise, it is probably a classpath problem.

         public static int[] sx = new int[10];
         public static int[] sy = new int[10];
    public static int[][] feld;
         public static int nquad;
         // Springzuege:
         void init(int[] sx,int[] sy,int[][] feld,int n,int nquad) {
         //Pringerzuege
         sx[1] = 2; sy [1] = 1;
         sx[2] = 1; sy [2] = 2;
         sx[3] = -1; sy [3] = 2;
         sx[4] = -2; sy [4] = 1;
         sx[5] = -2; sy [5] = -1;
         sx[6] = -1; sy [6] = -2;
         sx[7] = 1; sy [7] = -2;
         sx[8] = 2; sy [8] = -1;
         // Schachbrett Inizialisation
         for(int i=0; i<8; ++i){
         for(int j=0; j<8; ++j){
              feld[i][j]=-1; //Umrandung = -1
         for(int i=2; i<=5; ++i){
              for(int j=2; j<=5; ++j){
                   feld[i][j]=0; //Spielfelder auf 0 setzen
         nquad=n*n;

         boolean erg=false; //bisher keine Loesung
         while(!erg && k<=8) {
         u=x + sx[k];
         v=y + sy[k];
         if(feld[u][v]==0) {
              feld[u][v]=tiefe;
         if(tiefe<nquad) {

         ++k;
         return erg;
         public static void main(String [] args) {
         int n;
         int i=1;
         int j=1;
         boolean okay=false;
         Springer s = new Springer();
         s.init(sx,sy,feld,4,nquad);
         feld[i][j]=1;          //Anfangsfeld besetzen
         okay=s.zug(i,j,2);
              if(okay)
              System.out.print("Ein solches Pfad ist gefunden");
              else
              System.out.print("Keine Loesung gefunden");
    There is no errors by the compiling. But when i want to run the application follows:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Springer
    Can someone help me??
    I need that program!

    A few more comments on your code...
    - In Java arrays index start at 0 not at 1. You may want to change your init() method accordingly.
    - In init() the parameter nquad hide the field of the same name so the assignment you make at the end of the method is lost
    Hope this help,
    Eric

  • Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/hsqldb/Serve

    hi,
    I'm new in hibernate.I am studying hibernate tutorial from http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/v3/reference/en/html/tutorial.html
    After few steps When I've to start data base.It doesn't.
    I post whatever at command prompt. Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/hsqldb/Server
    C:\hibernateTutorial>I thing I should copy paste third party libraries in lib folder.
    but still i am confused.
    pl guide for this.
    Regards
    S.Singh

    Put the hsqldb JAR file into your classpath. I suspect Mr Singh was using ".." when he should have been using "." in the classpath string, but even if he wasn't his classpath issue's not that likely to be identical to yours.

    I am using java version "1.4.2_09" for the JDBC Connection. Is it the version problem or can be a problem specific to the code?

    hello debdatta
    The JVM is unable to find the class. Just check ur driver class whether its included in the class path.
    and its not getting the location of the file. The path where ur program is searching the class isnt there. so its the problem with ur path not the program.

  • Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Helloworld

    Hi Java Experts,
    I am at a lost to how Java searches for all the classes when running a program. Below are the following steps I have taken to try a simple basic HelloWorld.java program on the command prompt on Windows XP (SP2) platform:
    ( i ) Installed both jdk1.5.0_09 and Netbeans IDE 5.0 and working properly.
    ( ii ) The source file is located in F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\src\ch11 and the compiled file is in F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes\ch11 which was compiled in Netbeans.
    ( iii ) No problem compiling & running this program in Netbeans.
    ( iv ) The RUN CLASSPATH in Netbeans is F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes.
    ( v ) No CLASSPATH variable has been set.
    ( vi ) The HelloWorld program looks like this:
    package ch11;
    public class HelloWorld {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    System.out.println("Hello World!");
    ( vi ) Got the message
    "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HelloWorld"
    when running a combination of the following Java commands:
    ( a ) cd F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes
    ( b ) java HelloWorld, or
    java -cp . HelloWorld or java -cp "." HelloWorld, or
    java -cp F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes HelloWorld or "F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes" HelloWorld, or
    java -cp F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes;. HelloWorld or "F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes";. HelloWorld, or
    java -cp "F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes";. HelloWorld or "F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes";"." HelloWorld, or
    java -cp "F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes";. HelloWorld or "F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes";"." ch11\HelloWorld.
    It is the package location which is a subdirectory of F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes which caused Java not to find this program. I had no problem running it if the HelloWorld.java was moved one level up. ie from F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes\ch11 to F:\Documents and Settings\abc\HeadFirstDesignPattern\build\classes.
    I have written Java in the last year mostly on Netbeans without any problem running them.
    The reason for having to learn to run Java on the command line is so that I could add arguments to the program which I couldn't do in Netbeans just yet.
    I have gone through a lot of the articles from Java forums, Google searches but yet to have found a solution.
    Many thanks,
    Netbeans Fan

    I am getting the same problem when running the same program on a Fedora 4.0 (Redhat Linux 10) system, together with Netbeans 5.5 and JDK1.5.0_09. Again, I have no such problem when running the same program in Netbeans.
    Here are the steps that I have taken as follows:
