Wierd new system crash

Yesterday I had two system crashes where there was text written within a black box background written over what was on the screen when the computer froze. I didn't write down what was on the screen, but noted that one of the lower lines had 'Darwin' written on it. On looking through various posts and web pages about 'kernel panics', it seems like this might be what happened. Only thing is, the pages state that kernal panic screens on systems using os x above 10.3 have a benign screen telling you how to restart your system. One of the help pages I found says that around os x 10.1 or something like that had the black text box with white or light lettering like I had. I am using 10.4.7. I had run techtool pro 4.1.2 and all was fine except for the number of nodes being used which is often off a little, and after techtool had finished optimizing files and was waiting for input from me (while it was booted up under the e-drive) it had another freeze. Today I ran techtool pro again booted to the edrive, while it was running I started apple's disk utility and had it verify permissions; there were two 'fetchmail' permissions that were off, and were then repaired/returned to the normal state. All other testing showed positive results.
It seems like my machine had a 'kernel panic', but there is no panic.log in my system/library/logs folder area. Also during the panic it showed an old-style display on the screen. Is this a normal thing under os x 10.4.7, and why wouldn't there be a panic.log file? I recently remember that while trying to use excel from office x for mac the excel application just quit a few times and no message was displayed when it quit. Was this a symptom also of a 'kernal panic'?
all help appreciated,
charles

Hi cufford,
Have you added any RAM recently? RAM is the leading cause of KP's. KP's also can manifest themselves in a variety of ways.
Dr. Smoke has a whole site devoted to resolving them.

Syncing music via iTunes is only one way: from iTunes to your iPod.  If you need to copy the music from your iPod back to your PC, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different ways to do this.

  • New itunes crashes my 64 bit Vista system

I have the immediately prior version, 9.0.2.25, and it installed perfectly and has been working reasonably well (some problems with synchonization are minor-doesn't remove music from my iPod that I unchecked in iTunes), but every so often I try to install the new one. Now it simply crashes my system, right to blue screen and restart. No error message feedback.
Maybe I should just forget about this new update and wait for the next? Noticing some install 9.0.3 and then can't use it!
I'd love to know what's going on and have some help with this. Many thanks.

Sorry for the delay...have been away.
When my system crashes during the attempt to install, there is no error message but simply the blue screen saying it is dumping the contents of memory to hard disk.
I usually get another message before this happens, saying it cannot access the Microsoft installer, that it may be corrupt. However, I am able to install other programs both before and after with no problems. I'm wondering if this message is actually caused by other installation issues, such as a file already existing that can't be deleted or change, such as the "temp" file in C:/appdata.
This file resists deletion or change of name, and is rather large, over 5 gig in size.
Should this be deleted in safe mode?
    Thanks,
    John

when you install the disc, do it with the machine powered off. Place the disc in the the slot, push it in while holding the power switch tp poer it up, while holding the "C" key down till the gear starts spinning. After the gear starts spinning you can release the C key and wait. This takes much longer than normal longer, then create a new account. Be ready to wait.

  • OS X Creative Suite 6 deactivation issue before moving to new system (motherboard crashed)

    Hi,
I'm running Creative Suite 6 on Mac OSX
Motherboard crashed, bought a new system
I have de-activation to my previous disk ("T"arget mode) from new, but cannot de-activate licensed products before installing on new
How de-activate Creative Suite applications from previous system/disk ?

First, you get two activations. If the second has not been used you are good to go. You can contact technical support and ask to have you activations reset. However, Adobe support may not be available this week. If so, run the software on your new system in trial mode until Adobe support re-opens.

  • System Crashing on new iMac

Hiya, i bought a new iMac just over 2 weeks ago, and already the screen freezes up on me. I can move the mouse but everything else is frozen. I never had this problem till i downloaded Lion OS X, and now it seems to do it on a regular basis, so far it has crashed 3 times today. I don't know if anyone else has been experiencing this problem with the new operating system? or iMac? if anyone can help that would be great. Thank you.

10.7.3 is working fine for me on a mid-2011 iMac.
Download the 10.7.3 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484 . After downloading, use Disk Utility (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) to repair permissions, then apply the update, then when done and rebooted, repair permissions again.
Sometimes, Software Update doesn't quite get the update right and odd things can happen. Applying the combo update can usually fix those issues.
Also, you can do a safe boot by rebooting and holding the shift key down. This will take longer than a normal boot. See if the system crashes that way. If not, look at your login items and at your system preferences pane to see what is loading with the system. You may have a compatibility issue with non-Apple software you've added.
If those actions don't help, contact Apple support or take it back to the store for help. It's a new system and you shouldn't have that type of issue.

  • Have new ipad2 1st time setup sync etc went without a hitch. Now whole system crashes

Now every time I connect the ipad to the computer the system crashes.  I get a long message starting with windows shutting down to prevent damage to computer.  Have followed procedures like system restore to the date before 1st sync, opend in safe mode, checked bios for updates etc but none of these actions have stopped the system crashing.  What can I do now?

I'd make appointment with Apple genius and detail everything that you have done, the error message you are getting and the crash.  It might be more than you'll find a solution for here.

  • [VIA] Via K7-266 Pro2 - System crashes if use more than 512 MB of memory

Cannot use more than 512 MB of memory or system crashes. After running without a problem for over 2 years with 1 GB of memory installed, system started intermittent crashing, generally after 5 to 30 minutes of use.  I worked with the system manufacturer's tech support and they determined that it must be a motherboard problem.  I am hoping to find another fix rather than replacing motherboard.  System details:
    MB: Via K7-266 Pro2 (MS 6380)
OS: MS Windows XP Update 1
    Bios: V3.6
I've used Norton Systemworks and Norton Anti-Virus to keep system clean, and SpyBot and Adaware to clean adware
During troubleshooting, we found that it will run with 512 MB of memory without problems, but not with the 1 GB I had installed.  My memory was 2 x 256 MB installed with the machine and 512 MB I purchased from Crucial and installed.  Computer ran over 2 years with all memory installed without a problem.  After the problem started and during troubleshooting, we found that any combination of 512 MB worked fine (either the 2 x 256 MB or the one 500MB chip), apparently in any arrangement of slots.  But as soon as I went to higher memory, I was subject intermittent crashes.
Could not ID the source of the crash.  It sometimes happened when I was working with a single program open (various programs from IE to Excel to playing at GameSpy), had multiple programs open in background, or even when computer was sitting idle with only the startup programs active.
During troubleshooting we also did a complete re-install of Windows XP, updated the bios to V3.6, and checked bios settings, but the problems persists.
What else could be the problem?

I am beginning to suspect a PSU problem.  I neglected to mention in my first post that when the system crashes, it does not freeze but has intermittent reboots.
I ran the memtest86+ test first on the two old sticks of memory then on just the one new 512 MB stick; both passed the test.  I also used the Prime95 stress test on both sets, and both ran without incident.
I used PC Alert to report CPU and case temperatures during the stress test.  The results maxed at 54 and 41 degrees respectively during the first stress test and 46 amd 39 degrees during the second test (I think part of the difference was due to a lower ambient, room temperature during the second test.)  The voltages reported during both tests were similar and were: Vcore1: 1.71v;  Vcore2: 1.26v; +5v: 4.76v; 3.3v: 3.31v; +12v: 11.60v; and -12v: 12.60v.  I am not sure if that information is meaningful, PCAlert showed all measurements as within the required range.
I periodically have cleaned the dust out of my computer, so I don't think that is the problem.
I used 2 power calculators with major differences in the reported status of the system. The test from pcpowercooling reported minimum and maximum requirements for my system (with the full 1 GB of memory installed) of 300w and 510w.  The alternate I found at jscustompcs (from a recent article about power supplies at Extreme Tech) reported a minimuum of 256w (no maximum is calculated with their tool.  The two tools had significant differences for memory, CPU, and PCI cards.  Off particular relevance to my problem was the difference in memory requirements; Pcpowercooling calculated memory requirements at 8w per 128MGB while jcustompcs used 12.5 per stick, resulting in different totals of 64w vs. 21w.  Which is right?
One item that makes me think it is not the PSU, however, is that the problem would occur with the 1 GB of memory while the system was idle, thus I was not using any of the hardware devices.  However, I never experienced the problem while using a device (e.g. DVD, CDRW, or tape drive) - either with 500MB or 1GB of memory.
    My power unit is a Power Man #FSP 300-60BTV with 300w output, including +3.3v: 28amps; +5v: 30.0 amps; +12v: 15 amps; +5vsb: 20amps; -5v: 0.3amps; -12v: 0.8amps.  It also notes max output of +3.3v and +5v of 200amps.
My system also includes a Leadtek nVidia Geforce 3 Ti400 graphics card, DVD, CDRW, HP 14 GB tape drive, 1 case fan, and 4 PCI cards (modem, network, USB2.0, and Audigy 1).  The USB card is connected only to a bus in my Dell monitor and I have not used other USB devices.
Any thoughts or suggestions?  Do I need to replace the PSU?

  • Leopard "Blue screen of death" - total system crash!

So my new mac crashed. Again.
Recently I've experienced that my mac freezes when I start to do some heavy work, like video-editing or Photoshop. A re-install solved the problem for around two weeks, before the same thing happend again yesterday:
During a update of Final Cut Studio, my Mac suddenly freezes, and I had to do a forced quit. After this reboot my mac got to a blue screen (after the loading-apple-screen), and nothing more.
After around 14 reboots, I decided to do a archive and re-install. This re-install took *14 HOURS*, and now it stops at the loading Apple-logo.
Tryed to verify the disc with the Disk Utility software, showed up fine. Tryed to repair the permissions - came up some errors (apparently some missing files(?), before it said that it was fixed. Finally I tryed an extended hardware test - showed up nothing wrong.
Then I got the idea that I maybe could make a 2nd partition of the harddrive, preserving the exsisting data, and install Leopard on that new one. But when I try to install Leopard on this, I get an estimated *21 hours* of time to install.
I've also tryed to boot from a Linux-bootable USB-stick I use with my Acer-PC, but it refuse to boot from that.
So I'm pretty much stuck right now. When I try to open the machine in Single User Mode, it tells me a bunch of errors, before the following lines is repeated:
    disk0s2: I/O error.
    0 [Level 3] [ReadUID 0] [Facility com.apple.system.fs] [ErrType I0] [I0Type Read] [PBlkNum 373453728] [LBlkNum 1356] [FSLogMsgID 591622195] [FSogMsgOrder First]
    0 [Level 3] [ReadUID 0] [Facility com.apple.system.fs] [DevNode root_device] [MountPt > [Path (usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib] [FSLogMsgID 5916221951] [FSLogMsgOrder Last]
Could it be the harddrive, the RAM, or something completly else?
    Any help is much appreciated!

Run DU and verify/repair the HD and also permissions.
Run Activity Monitor and check your Page outs which are related to RAM usage. If it is high, it indicates you are using your HD in lieu of RAM for whatever reason. It's not good and at the minimum slows things down.
You can also run a RAM check, such as Rember
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20050524014158525
Also check that your computer is not overheating.

  • Windows 7 full-system crash with Flash 10 audio

I upgraded from xp home to 7 pro, and now find the computer crashing (freezing) in Windows 7, either Firefox or IE8, when using Flash to play audio. Video is OK (with hardware acceleration turned off).  All audio enhancements are turned off.  Granted, this is an old computer, but the same version of Flash in the same versions of Firefox and IE work fine on the same hardware in XP.
Problem OS is Windows 7 Pro, up to date on patches including drivers, 32-bit
    Firefox 4.0.1 or IE 8
    Flash WIN 10,3,181,14
    Hardware summary:
    Pentium D 945
    2G RAM
2 500G hard drives (one PATA with the old XP system; one SATA with Windows 7 clean install upgrade; dual-boot as installed by Windows 7)
    Visiontek ATI X1300 video
    Motherboard Realtek audio
Bottom-fisher DSL (1.5 down) Internet connection
The freeze is guaranteed when listening to Pipedreams audio (for instance: http://pipedreams.publicradio.org/www_publicradio/tools/media_player/popup.php?name=pipedr eams/2011/05/16_pipedreams_128&starttime=00:00:00&endtime=00:59:07). If other network activity uses a lot of bandwidth (large pictures, etc.) the crash happens sooner, but even if completely left alone it will crash before a 1-hour program segment is finished.
Youtube works fine.  BBC iPlayer works fine.  Capital Public Radio web stream works fine.  All use Flash.
Sometimes (but not always) blue-screen type errors will be logged on restart (hard reset - power switch or reset button - is needed).  The most common are processor timer errors, with very occasional bus errors instead.  However, a blue screen never appears; the system just freezes.
There are a couple of similar topics from 2010, but neither that I found in the search was quite the same (involved video as well as audio), and both seemed to be helped by disabling hardware acceleration and audio enhancements -- that doesn't work for me.  Any other ideas?  Note again: this does not happen on the same hardware running XP Home (fully patched) with the same versions of Firefox, IE, and Flash.

BSOD's are never good. They point to a problem much bigger and deeper than any software issues.
When XP came out eleven years ago, people were astonished at how much processor it took to handle the GUI vs Windows 98. Processors an RAM have upgraded a lot since then. It was worse with VIsta, even on newer systems. Seven was a step in the right direction, but I'd guess that your old computer (your words, not mine) isn't up to the task of running Windows 7.

  • System Crashes repeatedly - hard drive issue?

I've been using my G4 933MHz with 2 internal hard drives for quite some time. I started having issues with the system crashing, while the system drive made a binding or poer up/down sound repeatedly. The drives were stacked on top of one another, so I bought a new cable and separated the 2 drives so they are now side by side. I thought maybe it was happening because they were getting too hot or something. The system worked for a few weeks, but is now back to having the same problem.
I've run both the Apple Disk utility and Tech Tool Pro and neither really come up with any problems. The Apple disk utility used to have issues seeing the drives right after a crash. Now it either sees them and says no fix needed or it doesnt see either drive at all.
Tech Tool Pro used to see both drives and all tests ran successfully. Now, I pretty much get a hardware nor supprted message each time I run it. At first I thought my system drive was the problem, but now I'm not sure. The fact that neither drive shows up in the disk utility makes me wonder if there is not some bigger problem. Both drives work perfectly fine sometimes. If I boot up a few times, they eventually show up and everything works fine for about 10-15 minutes, but eventually it crashes again.
Has anyone encountered this problem before? Or have insight into what might be wrong and how I could fix it? Or are there any other tests I can run, besides the normal hard drive tests? I'd just hate to go spend the money on a new hard drive to find out that my drives are fine and it's the system itself that is the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.
By the way, the second drive is almost identical to the drive that came with the computer. I bought it from a mac dealer and it is the same brand.
    Thanks,
    Wil

They're both on the same ide cable. It's been setup this way for quite some time. One drive is setup as a master, the other as a slave. Never had any problems for the past couple of years. Issue just started about a month ago. Don't recall anything that may have triggered it. Just one night when I was sitting there, the whole thing froze. Ever since then, it has been freezing sporatically. Now it's doing it about every 2 minutes from when I get it booted up...if I can even get it to boot. Most of the time it just sits on a grey screen, then goes to the blinking folder with the system face and question mark, then after about 20 seconds of that, it eventually boots into the system drive and freezes or boots to the cd. It's completely random from what I can tell, as to which happens.
