Wierd text: outlined strokes in widgets and online

Several of my widgets now do not display the correct appearance for the text. For example in the default Apple "Clock", the names for cities such as "Denver" don't display correctly. I only see a faint halo where the text used to be. Several other widgets display this error.
Oddly enough, some websites give me the same problem. It seems to be an OS problem with rendering fonts.
I'm using FontExplorer X, but I never messed with system fonts. I've restarted and updated the OS to the most recent... 10.4.11

Some Mac users had noted some font issues after the recent Java update;
and for a limited time, from whatever sources, some readers at MacFixIt.com
mentioned the issues and an article was posted there. Now, their time-out
for public reading of those items has passed, so their paid readership is the
only group who can access the story from a few days ago.
A few readers elsewhere experimented with the 'anti-aliasing' font setting
to see if font appearance changes back to a tolerable look.
While your issue with fonts may require the use of a reasonably good
font management utility (some are free or inexpensive downloads)
there may also be a small chance the newest Java download from
the Apple downloads updates may have somehow affected your Mac.
There may be another issue going on in your computer; but if you
try and isolate the problem to a user account (if you have more than
one, boot in other account to see if the issue exists there, or not)
and also see if booting from the Installer disc and run Disk Utility
from the Utilities options in the menu bar header show any defect.
Also, if there is a chance of a hardware problem behind this, there
is that Apple Hardware Test; which accompanied the computer. To
check and see if the problem is software or hardware, troubleshoot.

Giving text outline stroke and path and uniting with other paths

How do I give Lucida handwriting a 2pt outline stroke, give it an outline path, then unite it with another shape path without the text losing it's outline stroke?? I can't bold Lucida handwriting as it only has an italic option, so need to give it an outline stroke to achieve a bold letter. As soon as I give it an outline path and unite it to other shape paths the 'bold'ness disappears and it reverts to it's original size. I hope this makes sense! Any help would be appreciated.

What you will be looking for is what is called a flowing script (probably a casual flowing script); script fonts are those remembling handwriting.
You may have a look at this website, where you can click (Formal or) Casual Flowing Script and see many different ones (which may give you an overview and possibly some inspiration),

You can just select the live Type with the (normal) Selection Tool, then click Add New Stroke in the Appearance palette flyout. After that you can select it with the (relevant) Type Tool and edit as you like.

Outline Stroke, Effects, and Appearances.

Dear Adobe Users, Please come to my aid, I am at my wit's end.
I am trying to recreate the effect described here (http://opentype.info/blog/2012/08/09/the-google-maps-effect-in-adobe-illustrator/) - to whit, a a non-destructive, merged series of paths with a complete outline, with paths that can be resized at will without affecting any other paths, and any overlap areas should merge.* I have only been able to replicate it once and I cannot seem to do it a second time. Every single time I go to Effect > Path > Outline Stroke, nothing happens: an ‘outline stroke’ effect tab is added on the appearance panel, but nothing at all happens to my lines, they don’t change in the slightest.
I can add all the outline stroke effects I want (in the appearance tab) - no effect. I can double click on the outline stroke - nothing happens. There's nothing to edit. I can move it around - no effect. I can get OBJECT > Path > Outline stroke to work, of course, but that is not non-destructive: it destroys my paths, and I can't add new paths or anything.
I cannot copy-paste the successful attempt into new layers. I cannot duplicate the layers into new files and have the effects still work. I cannot copy existing paths into the layer and use the eye-dropper to copy the effects.
Please, someone, come to my aid! What did I do right, and how can I do it again?

Trouble outlining stroke and aligning to outside.

I am having trouble converting a stoke to a shape. I use object >path>outline stroke , click black selection tool, and go to stoke settings. For some reason, the align to outside stroke is greyed out to me and I don't know why.

We can't know. You have not even mentioned what program or what version, much less anything about your system or whatever else may be relevant. Either way, ask in the product forum of whatever tool you are actually referring to.

What is the difference between Object Outline Stroke, Object Expand..., and Object Compound Path/Make?

Could anyone explain the differences between these three commands? I created a circle with a stroke, applied all three commands, and ended up with the same thing, a compound path. Are there situations where this is not the case, or situations where one of these commands is more appropriate?

In the case of the straight stroke/nofill, object>outline stroke and object>expand seem to do the same thing.
In the Layers palette you can see the three different outcomes for Expand if you have both Fill and stroke ticked, only Fill ticked, and only Stroke ticked. Only the last one corresponds to Outline Stroke.
You should use Outline Stroke as the simplest one if that is what you need. Compound Path is for creating something with one or more holes from multiple paths, or for collecting paths to forrm the Clipping Path of a Clipping Mask. Expand is for the rest.

Scaling of text outlines in svg format

I'm in need of a solution for scaling text outlines in an svg format. I'm working on developing a Flash app that allows users to type in Flash text with an outline that is then exported out in an svg format. When user then scales the resulting svg formatted file the outline scales in proportion to the text size.Similar to what Illustrator does in it's app preferences, "Scaling Strokes & Effects".Thanks for any ideas anyone has!

Unwanted text outline colour in highlighted button state

Hi DVDSP geniuses and much thanks in advance!
I'm getting unwanted colour at the edges of text in buttons in selected and activated states. I'm using a non-layered menu and a greyscale jpeg for background, a greyscale jpeg for overlay with simple colours.
The overlay is black text on white and I'm creating buttons from the text. In the selected and activated states for buttons unwanted, pixelated outlines appear on the edges of the text, often in a colour I haven't selected for any of these states.
Can anyone help please?

I usually prefer picts or tifs for overlays. Are the pixels that you are seeing jaggedy edge types text edges or more like you are getting a glow? The edge of text can be a bear, but a drop shawod or stroke may help. (Did you do this in Photoshop) Also some text types/colors are more prone to issue (smaller fonts).
As to the color, did you somehow assign a different map set to the buttons? You can have three sets on a menu and if somehow adjusted a set for a button it could happen....(are the colors consistent on the menus, meaning it is always red or blue, let's say, on the menu where you expected yellow? (used three colors in case three sets snuck in.)

Covering text on Word Search widget

I am using the word search widget and ther is some faint text on the bottom that saus "click the first then the last letter of the work to ma e a selection"
I am trying to get wrid of that so I can put the instruction text elsewhere on the slide, but the words stay visible, even over some buttons we have got in the fram. Sending to bck doesnt work either. I have also tried covering the text with an image (of background), thenm grouping the widget with the image on front, but then that covers the buttons, even if I use send backwards...
Is ther a way if editing that instruction text so I can get rid of it?

To answer your question on how to assign an image to smartshape, you can go to Fill and Stroke accordion and click the Fill dropdown list. Here you have an option to browse and select a custom image.

Edit HTML text of an existing widget

I added an Instagram widget to my page that is working fine, except I want to see if it is possible to add a border to the photos so that it has a more uniform look. It has been a minute since I've worked in Muse and I have forgotten how to find the area where that HTML text is entered, and subsequently edited. Can someone please shed some light? I believe I would select the widget and then go to a menu in Muse. But there doesn't seem to be that menu item that would allow me to edit a pre-existing widget. Ugh
As always, any insight would be ever so greatly appreciated.

I discovered the problem. It's on the right click. And I recently started using a wierd Mac mouse. Haven't figured out the right click. Works fine on a regular mouse. That's where the "edit HTML" option lives. Thanks anyway, all. Best

Does the iPod work OK?
Does it charge when connect to the computer?
Does it appear in My Computer?
Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Compare with the iPod that does work/connect.
I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1

Outline stroke with Illustrator scripting

Hello everybody!
I'm making a script. I need to do the outline stroke action. I can't find it in the extendscript anywhere.
I can do it from a applescript and call it from my extendscript in CS6 BUT I need my script to run CS5.5 and run on a windows machine:

Anyone out there with an answer? It would help me alot. As I understand it you can call functions withing extensionscript if you have the right "action code" for it. Using the ActionDescriptor.

Check online with the web site of the maker of your video card for an updated driver (assuming you're running Windows).

Text not found in CS and CS4... (updated)

I just received a file (a flyer design) that I wanted to translate into a different language using the same fonts and basic design elements than the original one... So I just wanted to rewrite and maybe size the original texts using the same settings and fonts as the original version.
However, Illustrator CS did not recognize the text as text, but instead, shows each letter in the text as a separate object. (At the file name on the top, it says "converted")
I checked with CS4 and it is still the same case: no text recognized and file name on top says "converted"... I'm just downloading the trial CS5 to see if it is a compatibility issue, but in the meantime, I would like someone to help me and tell me if I am on the right track here...

Update... The same in CS5 as well, so it is not a compatibility issue... Is it possible that they used fonts that are not present in my system?... Again> Illustrator does not recognize text as text, so I cannot edit it using the keyboard... And I dont want to mess with the letters one by one...

One of them is .ai.ps (postscript) the other one is an .ai file...
I actually did some research in these topics and am now thinking that the texts were outlined so I would have to ask the guys who created the original version to send me a "text editable" one... Could that be my answer? I'm pretty green to this thing..
On the other hand, CS5 still puts (Converted) next to the file name on the top... No error messages when opening the files...

Outline stroke not working in CS6

so I just create a straight, uniform line and press Effect > Path > Outline Stroke... but nothing happens
not sure if I'm doing something wrong... or if there is a bug?

the line has a black, 10 pt, uniform stroke on it.... I click the outline stroke command and nothing happens... an fx does appear in the appearance palette, but when I click the Outline Stroke item there nothing opens... every other effect opens a dialog window...
