Wife got a 3GS to replace her 2G... not a smooth move

What was to be a happy evening has been a giant pain. Backing up her 2G was a exercise in futility... it timed out (or whatever) and even uninstalled apps she had installed directly on her iPhone via the internet/WiFi. They just disappeared, ponderous! In fact simply backing up her phone for it to carry over some of the basics is proving to be almost unaccomplishable with the cluster F that is iTunes and her 2G. Why on earth is there not some simple utility to back up pictures, contacts, wallpapers, etc for them to be integrated on a new phone. Why does it says it is backing up and sit there for hours doing nothing? Why does it start backing up apps and then give a quick error message and then stop?

You're post is lacking in details like what operating system you are using, whether you have the most recent iTunes, whether you have security software on your machine, etc.
Backing up in iTunes is a very simple process. I do it 4 or 5 times a week and it's a very quick thing. I also import my pictures to iTunes every few days.

If it is second hand, try putting it in recovery mode, and restoring it with itunes on a mac or pc.

  • Wife's computer down the hall from printer not able to peint

I have an HP 8600 all in one wireless printer. It sets right next to my laptop and works great. A few months ago my wife got a dell computer in her office down the hall. It found the printer and worked okay for awhile. But now it's not printing all the time, weak signal I suppose. Would it help if I hooked a router up to her computer to increase signal?

Where is the router located?  Generally the printer and the computers would connect to the router.
Running the diagnostics at http://www.hp.com/go/tools on the wife's computer  may help resolve the issue.

The problem is she can't update to new software until she connect to iTunes, but she don't want to loose all that info.
    My question is:
If she register her apple ID on that new computer, and sync the phone, will she loose everything? or iTunes will back up first (because apple id match) and then sync.
Otherwise, how can I do it? The closest apple store is 3 hours away. thanks!

Before you connect to a new PC, make sure that autosync is disabled in Edit/Preferences/Devices, otherwise her phone will be wiped during the following sync.
If she has data on the phone she wants to save, back up manually:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to her new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your phone without syncing. Transfer the purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the phone for the first time.

Just downloaded FACETIME on my 4yr. olf Imac running Snow Leopard. When making a call to my friend's Imac all works correctly going both ways. When my wife calls me via Facetime from her Ipad, I cannot click on "accept"- not there? When called by the Imac (newest), the "accept" or "reject" radio button appears for me to click and connect. On my wife's Ipad the two radio buttons always appear when a call actiivates Facetime and comes on?
There is nothing I can find in "Preferences" in Facetime to turn that on or off. I suspect it has to do with having a more current operating system; that the "controls" are in the operating system? [I'm guessing] It's frustrating getting Facebook calls from several friends on Ipads! Any ideas...VFP

I suspect it has to do with not having a more current operating system
Exactly, what Apple is doing is leveraging new features only on newer OS X versions to force you to upgrade OS X to 10.7 or later.
What they don't tell you is 10.7 or later will NOT run your PowerPC based software, some of it you can't get Intel versions like for perfectly working printers, scanners and games etc. So it can be a very expensive OS X upgrade to 10.7 or later with third party software.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also they don't tell you is the risk in bricking your machine if the update goes badly, so you have to have AppleCare in case that occurs so it's on them to fix it. Else your paying money to replace the logicboard or buying a new machine prematurely.
A four year old machine can't have AppleCare, it's only good for 3 years from date of purchase new.
Your machine came with a boot hard drive, it's usually got about 4-5 years of life on it, then it needs to be replaced.
Also they don't tell you the newer OS X version has more abilities and features that causes your machine to slow down in performance, especially on older machines.
Also they implement new, idotic and extremely fustrating new user interface features in a arbitrary "you take it or leave it" manner with little or no fall back method.
So upgrading OS X is a gamble on older machines that otherwise would likely work perfectly fine for the next 5 years if one didn't need to have to mess with it.
Since Snow Leopard has slightly over 25% OS X version market share, your still good for security updates etc for the next few years if you just want to stay where your at and be happy.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
The Lions are, well, not so welcome due to Scott Forstall retard UI issues, OS X Mavericks 10.9 is likely going to fix things a bit better.
But basically what is occuring is Apple is trying to force a faster hardware upgrade cycle with the more expensive products by leveraging features on the smaller devices that expire sooner.
Apple is a hardware company that leverages whatever it can to get you to buy more hardware, it's why they are as rich as they are.

Then you should have done your homework. It clearly states in the warranty at:
    http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/iphone-english-c.html
IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.
Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.

  • My cousin isn't recieving my text messages. We never text through imessage because she is never connected to WIFI. Now, when I text her, it is sending through imessage but she isn't recieving them.

My cousin recently got an Ipad. Ever since then, when we text through our iphones, our thread is through imessage, and when I send her a text, it says delivered, but she isn't recieving them. She insists she has imessage turned off on both devices. She doesn't use imessage because she is never connected to wifi and doesn't want to use her data, so that is why we text through regular texting (green and white). I don't know if this has anything to do with her setting up her ipad, but my texts to her started sending through imessage only right after she set up the new device. My texts are being delivered somewhere because after I text her, it says "delivered"  I can also recieve texts from her, she just can't see mine. Again, she said imessage is not activated on either of her devices, so I have no idea what the problem is. She is able to text other people with iphones just fine. We both have an iphone 5S, and she just got a used ipad mini. PLEASE HELP!!

It is no wonder she is not receiving your messages if she has iMessage turned off in her iPad.
For her to receive iMessages on the iPad, she needs to turn iMessage ON in her iPad and then she needs to be connected to the internet in order to receive them.  This connection can go through WiFi or through cellular data if her iPad has this functionality, but those two requirements are a must.
    1. iMessages ON
    2. iPad connected to Wifi or cellular data.

  • Working with "Replace Here" background

hello - I just got Motion2, but I am already needing it to finish a video project. I haven't had time to locate the answer to my issue on the manual, so I ask anyone on this board to help. I am trying to use a motion2 template for a FCP video project. How do I replace the "Replace Here" background so that when i import the file into my FCP timeline I am able to use it as an alpha key and overlay onto video. When I try to bring the motion file into FCP, I portion of the graphic that is supposed to key through to video is not keying.
I hope I am explaining this correctly. Anyone?

One: use the replace media button for the "Replace" placeholder graphic. Two: Import your .motn project file into FCP and overlay your clip with it.

  • Hi to All, My wife still has ios 6 on her ipad (she likes the look). I will do the 7.1 upgrade when it is released. Should there be any issues going from 6 directly to 7.1? Thanks!

There shouldn't be. I went from iOS5.whatever to iOS6.1 with no issues.
Just make sure to back everything up before you do it, just in case all doesn't go as planned.
I always do mine the old fashioned way, download the full OS via iTunes so if you've already got it linked to a computer and been using iTunes to do updates/syncing that's how I'd suggest you do it.

  • HT203512 Got my iPad air replaced guy in store said my music was in cloud and it wouldn't be a problem to transfer over.turns out it is cause I had updated my system since then and my entire music Is

I Got my iPad air replaced because it had problems connecting to the wifi.
the guy in the Apple Store said my music library was stored in the cloud and would be easily restored.
the problem is the new iPads operating system was updated there for couldn't retrieve my stored music I was livid I have an old pc
that took me ages to get the full music library on in the first place and don't really want to go down that route again.
please if you can give me any advice to get my library on my iPad from the cloud please help.....

There are two ways to sync music across your computers and devices (e.g., iPads, iPhones).
One (the "traditional" method) is to connect a cable between the PC or Mac and the device, open iTunes, and sync all or some of your music.
The cloud method requires an iTunes Match subscription ($25/year in the US, £22/year in UK). With this method, you sign up, and all your iTunes music is copied up to the cloud, where it then becomes available on all devices. If you stop the subscription you lose cloud access to the music - however, you should keep a copy of the music in its original location (e.g., the PC you started with), or download everything from the cloud to another authorized computer, to keep a local copy just in case. If you're not sure whether or not you have an iTunes Match subscription active, check your emails from Apple, or just try to sign into iTunes Match on the iPad (Settings - iTunes - iTunes Match) and see if it lets you.
"Device backup" is a separate thing from "syncing". You can back up an iPad to a computer or to iCloud. Much of your information is backed up - however, it does NOT include music. If the Apple representative told you that an iCloud backup would restore your music, he was mistaken.
I don't know if that helps you
    Matt

Are you trying to print through the airport express wirelessly or the built in wireless of the lexmark? If you want to use the airport express, there is no need to mess with the wireless printing on the lexmark at all. The airport express will be easy to set up, all the wireless setups through the printers are a pain.
