Wifi access blocks certain apps; workaround?

Ok o I go ta a college which has a wifi network. The connection allows me to connect to the internet with my browser but will not let me connect through mail.app and other applications. this is important because I have my Gmail account set to delete messages on the server when I download them via POP so if I need to download an attachment from mail.app, I can't. Also it doesnt let me connect to most applications on the iPhone except Safari. I would to be able to use Mobilechat, twitterific, Facebook or Pandora when I'm on campus. Is there any workaround?
Newbie, thanks.

Try using an IMAP account in Gmail. In the advanced tab of account preferences under “Keep copies of messages for offline viewing” pop-up menu, select "All messages and their attachments".
When you go offline, you’re disconnected from the server. Any changes you make to messages are made to the local copies of the messages. When you go back online, any changes you made offline are copied to the server.
I have found this to be the best way to work around public networks that block the ports for email on their servers. You can find more information on IMAP in the help section of mail.app.

  • How do you restrict access to certain apps via the use of Time Restrictions?

Is there anyway to limit the use of certain apps to a time period of the day? I know the time restrictions on this site ONLY pertain to texting and calls, but not email or any other app, such as Twitter or Facebook, etc.

Well, there are a few different ways to go about it. You could add a preferences page with the admin functionality, and then an admin would just have to click the little pencil in the portlet titlebar. No admin/edit access, no little pencil.
I have often set the visibility of an ASPX control directly from activity rights, in OnPageLoad, if it isn't postback time. The activity rights should be inherited by the user, through the user's group. Best practise is to create empty groups called Roles, add activity rights to the Roles, and then have the actual groups (that contain users) inherit from one or more Roles.
You already knew that part, I added it for the others. My personal definition of a portlet is 'polymorphous instance of a web service'.
    So:
Role: Store Manager (has Edit Shopping Cart activity right)
    ^
Group: Store Managers (has Store Manager parent group)
User: Vladimir (inherits Edit Shopping Cart activity right)

  • How can I check to see if a plug-in or something else is preventing me from accessing a certain app?

Hello, Thanks in advance for any help. I'm an elementary teacher who is having trouble accessing my online grade book from my mac. The publisher if the gradebook app is Pearson. My school district technology dept. has not been helpful at all, but a family member who knows about these things helped me and many other teachers in my district discover that using Firefox and accessing "the old launch" of the gradebook app will allow mac users access. My problem is that I cannot even get into the "PowerTeacher" area (portal?) that leads me to the gradebook. It has been suggested to me that perhaps there is a plug-in I have that is conflicting somewhere along the way. Others have been successfully logging in, so I'm guessing it is something just with my version of Firefox or other... If someone can help me with this frustrating problem, I will be forever grateful!

    Hello,
    # Click the ≡ Menu Button and choose Add-ons.
    # Click Plugins on the left.
    # Set "Default Browser Helper" to Never Activate.
#* [http://www.aeyoun.com/posts/default-browser-plugin.html Mavericks’ weird little “Default Browser Helper” plug‐in injected into all web browsers | Aeyoun]
The remainder of your plug-ins handle various web content. At best, I could see them causing problems when disabled, not the other way around. You probably meant extensions: see the last step at the bottom of this post.

  • Restricting access to private apps (using Enterprise Program)

I've been looking in to distributing private apps on iOS. I know that it is possible to use the Enterprise program to create a private app store. However, is it possible to host multiple apps inside this private app store but restrict access to certain apps? Or is this something I need to use a 3rd party service like Apperian or Appaloosa Store for?
For example, If I have two apps which I want to privately distribute, one available to everyone, and one restricted by some criteria (users who are a member of a specific group or assigned a certain role/permission)? Is this possible?
    Thanks

  • Block internet to certain apps?

I am trying to block internet access to certain 3rd party (non-Apple) applications that I run in Mac OS X. I'd rather not say why I need to do this, but my computer should basically just stop all attempts at an internet connection by these applications (it should act as though there is no internet connection).
On Windows, I would just find the port the applications are trying to use and block the ports with my firewall. How do I do this on my Mac?
BTW, I'm a recent switcher, but am computer and IP literate.
Other info: I switch between Wifi and a Wired ethernet connection. Please ask for any other details you need.
MacBook 1.83 Core One Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've not seen or heard of anything else, though you might find something similar looking on http://www.versiontracker.com or http://www.macupdate.com
LittleSnitch will work unregistered for three hours at a time with no limit to how often it's used. You just have to decide if the registration fee is worth not having to go back into SystemPreferences every three hours to turn it back on.

I can't access my kindle app on my iPad even though I am wifi connected.  Am visiting in France right now but was able to get in yesterday and can't today. Help, please.

What operating system does your iMac have? (please always post your operating system to prevent confustion).
If it's pre-Lion you will have to set Mail up manually:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Tiger

  • Is there a way to password protect certain apps from being used? Example I don't want my child to access my apps while he's using his on the iPad

Is there a way to password protect certain apps from being used? Example I don't want my child to access my apps while he's using his on the iPad. I don't want to lock him out of the iPad. Let him use Angry birds, but not Sims or Games not appropriate for him that I play.

Sorry, but it is not possible to restrict use of specific apps other that the few restrictions provided in the Restrictions settings, not unless the app itself provides some sort of lock. If you don't want your child playing certain games, the only answer is to not load them on the iPad he uses.

I am deploying to Afghanistan and I will not have wifi access.  I will have a hardline access to internet.  How do I sync my apps, newsstand, etc without wifi connection?

About the only other way I can think of is to have a computer with you or use one there, if you can put iTunes on it and download all your new stuff to the computer, then sync your iPad to that computer.
In switching computers you will lose previous content, but, as I understand it anyway, downloaded content will be the same as long as the same apple ID is used.

  • Wifi router blocks access after some time.

So i have router lynksys WRT120N  and the latest 1.0.0.7 firmware. And the problem occured frequently. I'll explain for example what happened yesterday.
At about 13.00 i went out, wifi was working okay. At around 18.00 i returned home and i was trying to connect to the wifi with my android phone, and suprisingly it did not work. I tried on my laptop and on a android tablet. It did not work. The only thing that i could figure it out is to reset the router. I checked the settings, and there was no access policy e.g. time based access blocking.
    any ideas?
    cheers

    You're welcome.

  • ITunes says I have certain apps on my iPad, but I can't access them on my actual iPad...

iTunes says I have certain apps on my iPad, but I can't access them on my actual iPad. This happened after plugging it in to my iMac. Can this be fixed, or do I have to re-download those apps not appearing on my iPad?

I assume that you've checked all your homescreens by swiping the screen to the left, and that you havn't filled up the maximum number of screens, which I think is 12 (in which case you will only be able to find them via the search screen - and have you tried typing in their names on the search screen ?).
Also how did you install them : by syncing from your computer or downloading them straight onto the device ? If you synced them then if Settings > General > Restrictions > Installing Apps is set 'off', then change it to 'on'.
You could also try a reset to see if they appear after the iPad has restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
