WiFi = AEBS = Ethernet = AEBS = WiFi ?

At one end of my house I have an Airport Extreme Base Station which connects to the internet through a cable modem and which creates an Apple wireless network; at the other end of the (main) house I have an Airport Express Base Station that extends the network.  This works fine within the main house but, due to thick exterior walls in between, the signal won't make it from the extending AEBS to the family room that is located in a later addition.  I tried another AEBS in the internal corridor between the main house and the addition but that doesn't work either.  (The corridor is in an L shape that would require 2-3 AEBSs, and additional power outlets, in order to string the signal out to the addition without going through the exterior walls.)  So instead I would like to run an ethernet cable outside the house from the extending AEBS to another AEBS located in the addition.  (Running it from the AXBS by the cable modem at the other end of the house would be impractical, although if necessary I could always swap the AXBS and AEBS if the AXBS will give me an 'out' ethernet signal.)  Will that work?  In other words, can one AEBS or AXBS receive a wifi signal and transmit it over an ethernet cable to another AEBS that then retransmits it as a wifi signal to clients on the extended network?  Thanks.

Before you start to configure the AirPort router that will be connected to the Ethernet port on the AirPort Express, you'll need some basic info (which you may already know).
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup for the Time Capsule
Click the Wireless tab/label just below the row of icons
Jot down the exact settings that you see for:
Wireless Network Name
Wireless Security
Close AirPort Utility
I suggest that you temporarily move the device that you want to configure to connect to the AirPort Express very close to the Time Capsule for configuration.
It would be a good idea to perform a Factory Default Reset on the device that you want to configure to clear out any old settings so you can start fresh.
Power down the AirPort device
Hold in the reset button on the device and keep holding it in as you plug power back in to the AirPort device
Keep holding the reset button for at least 8-10 seconds after you plug power back in to the AirPort, then release the reset button and allow 40-45 seconds for the device to restart, at which time you will see a slow, blinking amber light
Connect a spare Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme or simply to the Ethernet port if you are using an AirPort Express
Open AirPort Utility, select the device and Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name to the device, device password, and adjust Time Zone settings.
Click the Wireless tab to configure the wireless settings:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your Time Capsule wireless network
Enter a check mark next to Allow this network to be extended
Radio Mode = Your choice here for what you need
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your Time Capsule security
Wireless Pasword = Same password as your Time Capsule wireless network
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update at lower right to save settings and the device will restart. You should have a green light in 40-45 seconds, or a message may appear asking you if you wan to allow setup over WAN. You can select Yes to this if you want
Power down the AirPort device that you have just configured, move it to the desired location and connect it to the Ethernet cable that connects to the AirPort Express
Power down everything on your entire network....all devices....order is not important
Start the modem first and let it run a moment
Start the Time Capsule the same way
Start the AirPort Express the same way
Start the AirPort device connected to the AirPort Express the same way
Start each other device the same way, etc
Check for proper operation
Post back on your progress and I'll provide you with a tip so that you will be able to tell what device your laptop os connected to at any given time.

  • Can't use private wifi or ethernet but Wifi with F...

    Hi
We've had a Homehub3 for two years now with no problems.  Last week there was a day's electricity power down locally for maintenance and when the power came back on the internet connection was broken.  No wifi or ethernet worked but I could connect fine through all our devices via wifi with FON.
As background at home we have iphones, ipads, macbook and pc laptops connected to the wifi as well as PVR, Xbox and powerline routers plugged in to the ethernet, plus an ethernet cable to connect to laptops where required (for scenarios like this).
BT spent an hour and a half with me trying to resolve this before sending me a replacement Homehub 3.  We received this yesterday, plugged it in and connected the various wifi devices.  The situation is almost the same except one ipad does connect directly through the private wifi network (the other doesn't), and one iphone also does (again, the other doesn't).  Nothing works through ethernet, but again, everything works via wifi with FON.
Obviously we've done lots of rebooting and resetting of hubs and equipment (with delay time before turning back on) but to no avail.
Any suggestions would be widely appreciated but please be aware I'm not particularly technical and a bit of a numpty so basic guidance would be a big help.
    Thanks
    Jules
    Solved!

    Thanks for the response.
I did the pin in the back/factory reset four times with no joy on the previous hub and deleted all connections.  I can give it a try with the new hub that has arrived to see if that makes a difference but as it's a totally different and new hub I don't think that will make a difference as all of the connections were new anyway.
Ethernet made no difference in the past after this.  I can try a different cable but the other ethernet cables that connect the Xbox and PVR aren't working either so I don't think the issue is isolated to the cable.
I haven't reset the powerline hubs so can look into that.
I'll try all of the suggestions after work later and post back but as they're all things I've tried and we've got a brand new hub I'm not confident it will make a difference so any alternative suggestions I can try are also very welcome.
    Thanks

  • Dell Venue Pro 11 w/Dock / Unable to concurrently use ethernet and wifi?

Does anyone know why you are unable to use the dock ethernet connection and the tablet's wifi connection at the same time?
I assume this is a limitation of the dock / tablet because if you hook a laptop up you can use the ethernet and wifi at the same time because they have different MAC addresses.
Thanks for any assistance you can provide....

  • Macbook Pro 10.7.5 internet will not work. HELP!!! Ethernet and WIFI both say connected but still no internet.

I have a macbok pro running 10.7.5. My internet has always worked on it but I decided to try changing my router set up - the set up didn't work so I reverted back to the original setup that had previously worked.
Now, I have an Imac running tiger - I can connect to the internet via WIFI or Built In Ethernet with no problem.
When I try to connect to the internet on the Macbook Pro running osx 10.7.5 my internet will not work
Safari Says (You are not connected to the internet) and Google Chrome says (Page is Unavailbe) and lists some trouble shooting options that I tried.
When I go to System prefrences > Network my WIFI and Ethernet both say "Connected" and have a green light next to them.
I have tryed deleting the connections and starting new ones and I have even tried deleting the Location and starting a new one.
Nothing works - no matter what I do, even know the WIFI or ETHERNET says Connected, the internet will not work on the Macbook Pro.
The Internet works fine on my Imac and I have tried everything such as swaping cables but there doesn't seem to be a problem with my internet
or with my router - it all works fine with my Imac running Tiger.
Can anyone help me get my internet working on my Macbook Pro again? Any ideas?

    Hello ASGR.SYS amd WahWar,
I tried both of your suggestions and neither of them worked.
ASGR SYS - When I tried it your way i got a message saying that the that the diagnostic couldn't repair the problem. It shows the thw WIFI, WIFI SETTINGS, NETWORK SETTINGS, ISP, all turn green. But the Internet and Sever stay red. The thing is, there is nothing wrong with my internet connection as I can connect to the internet on my Imac running tiger, both through ethernet and wireless. When I go to System Prefrences and Ntwork the WIFI and ETHERNET both say "Connected" even know I can't veiw any websites.suggestion
When I tried WAHWAR's suggestion I get a message that says cannot connect to the WIFI network and then it lists your typical trouble shooting tips. Like Make sure you entered the right password and make sure you are in range of the wireless network
Again, just to confoirm - My internet connection is working fne both the WIFI and the Ethernet. When I use it on my IMAC running tiger, everything connects as it should and it works perfectly. But when I try to connect with the MacBook Pro, Even know the connections in the Network settings window show up as "connected" the MacBook still seems to think that my internet connection isn't working at all.
I have tried creating new connections, creating new locations, and I have even gone as far to reset my router and start completely from scratch. The result so far has been the same - the IMAC running tiger will connect - my blackberry and iphone will connect - but the macbook pro running lion will not connect..
    I'd apprechiate any other suggestions

  • I can't connect to Internet anymore (WIFI or Ethernet). This was working perfectly before. I don't get a proper IP address from my ADSL box and it seems there is a DNS error when accessing the Internet.

I have an issue with my MacBook pro (MAC OS X 10.8.3) when trying to access Internet. I am behind an ADSL box (Orange). I have a PC on the same LAN which accesses Internet perfectly via the same Box.
On the MAC, I have tried WIFI and Ethernet. And have same issue on both. I have checked the IP address (the ADSL box is a DHCP server) but the MAC doesn't get a proper IP and network mask I tried a manual IP address setup and it doesn't get better. I have setup the DNS servers for my Internet provider, but I get DNS error. I have tried 2 Internet browsers (Chrome and Safari), both have the same issue.
I tried to put my MAC on a different ADSL box (I have 2 acccesses with 2 providers at home) and get the same issue.
I also noticed a havy CPU load on the mDNSResponder process (at least 30%). I have restarted it, but no improvement.
Last, I have repared the permissions.
From those trials, it seems that the problem is on the Mac side. But I am completelly without any new idea, so I need help
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Hi Manu,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear that the LAN and Wireless is not working as expected after updating to Windows 8.1, normally to avoid compatibility issue all the drivers should be updated when the computer is in Windows 8. Hence, I suggest you to perform “System Restore” and the follow the update procedure. Below is the link to perform “System Restore” then a link with exact Windows 8.1 upgrade procedure.

  • What is better: Apple TV ethernet or WiFi to an Airport repeater?

Hi - I have a Time Capsule as main WiFi router (ethernet to Cable modem), and an Airport Extreme as repeater/booster in the other side of the house. There, I can connect the AppleTV (2nd generation) either by WiFi to the Airport Extreme repeater or with an ethernet cable (same shelf of entertaining center). Which one would be better/faster/more stable? The WiFi signal is strong (ATV next to the AE repeater), but ethernet cable has no interference...However, I's still relying on the WiFi signal from the main TC to the AE repeater.
    Thanks in advance.

Even when I'm still relying on the WiFi signal from the TimeCapsule to reach the Airport Extreme repeater?
The ethernet cable is just replacing the WiFi from the repeater right next to the Apple TV. I've read that ATV has 10/100 Mb/sec ethernet, and at this short distance the 802.11n should reach its theoretical limit, which I read is fatser...The issue about interference (microwave oven, cordless phone) is minimal because I'm still relying on the WiFi to reach the entertaining center where the AE and ATV are...
    Thanks again,

  • MB Air cannot see TC 1T '09 while connected via WiFi and Ethernet.

I have a TC 1T 2009 7.4.1 that I have set up successfully with MB Pro and MB White. However I cannot set it up with MB Air v.1 which is connected to TC via WiFi AND Ethernet cable. Internet is fine (Safari) but no TM - when I run APU 5.4.1 it cannot discover the TC it is connected to.
I tried connecting after hard-reset (poke/power on), it would see the TM but then hang forever reading the configuration. So I set it up with MB Pro and MB White and both are now working fine with TC/TM. Then I tried MB Air and it failed.
The TC is connected via ethernet to Sagem router (bridged mode) which supplies WAN and DHCP, it has its own WiFi as well.

And by the way, Hi Everyone, how rude of me not to greet you in the post.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Ethernet and wifi clashing?

    hi, hope someone can help.
    i have a brand new imac 21.5"
i run some IP cameras on a local wired network, 192.168.1.xx
    these are picked up fine.
when i turn on the Airport, to connect to my wifi, the ethernet network drops.
is there a way to have both running? the airport configures using DHCP, and when i turn it on it connects with IP address 192.168.1.2
can anybody suggest anything, i'm at the end of my (very limited) knowledge about networks!! is there any info i've left out?
    thanks
    garret

So you want to connect your iMac to two different Local Area Networks (LAN)? One over ethernet and the other over wi-fi? Or are they the same LAN with a connection for ethernet and wi-fi provided by the same router?

  • How can I troubleshoot Internet Sharing (wifi to ethernet)?

    Hi hi everyone!
Any idea how to troubleshoot wifi/ethernet Internet Sharing? I use to network a media player (like an AppleTV not made by Apple) and recently it stopped working. Luckily I have two macs in the house to shoot the troubles.
I have an iMac running Leopard 10.5.5 and a Powerbook running Tiger.
I have tried sharing both ways (imac wifi » powerbook ethernet and powerbook wiki » imac ethernet) but am only able to get an IP from the DHCP server (Airport Extreme N base station). I am not able to get on the web (google search, etc).
Where can I look to see what's not working?

I'm trying to transfer data (docs, emails) from an old G4 iMac running OS 10.3.9 to brand new iMac on 10.8.1  I'm stuck, any help greatly appreciated.  (Ethernet or wifi networking are both options if I can figure out how to get the machines to communicate.)

I have the old machine backed up onto an external firewire disk but can't hook that up to the new imac as I'm waiting for delivery of a firewire 400/800 adaptor - therefore starting the old machine up as a slave is also subject to the same delay.
I was hoping there might be some way to create a network between the 2 machines (and 2 different versions of the OS) to be able to transfer data across immediately but perhaps I'll just have to wait for my firewire adaptor to arrive.
I don't understand why you're buying a Firewire adaptor, since AFAIK both of your computers have Firewire already built in.
All you need is a firewire cable. Connect the Firewire socket on the old machine to the Firewire socket on your new iMac.
Then start the old machine in Target Mode (i.e. by holding down the T key on its keyboard, while it's starting up, until you see the three-legged T icon hopping around the screen of the old machine.)
At that point you will also see a new icon on the screen of your new iMac. This is the hard drive of your old machine.  By clicking on it you can navigate through it any way you like, just as you would normally.
Just drag across whatever you want from the old computer to the new one. This will leave everything on the old computer untouched.
    - or use Migration Assistant but in my experience, Migration Assistant isn't very reliable and fails to migrate large amounts of stuff.

  • Two Network : Ethernet and Wifi

    Hello
I'm connect at two sort of network :
    1- Ethernet
    2- Wifi
When i connect to my network, with ftp client, the soft take by default the Ethernet Netword.
How do forced my FTP client or other soft to take the wifi Network by default ?
    Thank you

    Hi,
Go to Network>Show>Network Port Configurations, and make sure Airport or en1 is dragged to the top of the list. At least that's the position the OS looks in first for Internet connection.

  • Why can't my iMac be on Ethernet with WiFi ON (to allow iPhone Calling)?

With iOS 8's option to allow other Apple devices to make and receive iPhone calls, I read its help article (LINK: OS X Yosemite: Use your Mac to make and receive phone calls ) and saw that the Mac needs to have WiFi on.  My desktop internet has always been more reliable with an ethernet connection, but I want this iPhone calling feature, so I turned on the WiFi also.  In preferences I DID change the order so that Ethernet comes BEFORE WiFi, but once I turn WiFi on, NO connection works at all!!  My browser keeps displaying a message that it can't reach the network.
(The ethernet cord is plugged into the same router transmitting the WiFi signal.  Other devices that "need to be on the same network", like my TiVo & Blu-Ray Player, are connected with Ethernet with WiFi off, yet still recognize my network remote controls that are using WiFi.  Why doesn't the iMac seem to work that way?)
How do I use my more reliable Ethernet connection for everyday iMac usage, but still use FaceTime's "allow iPhone calls" feature?

It should work the way you describe. Mine is set up that way and it works. Internet via Ethernet cable and iphone on same network via WiFi.
what are the IP Addresses you are getting on your Mac?
