Wifi button dimmed and grey

I have updated the software on my iphone 4s and I have lost the wifi connection. The wifi button is dimmed and grey and cannot be selected. I have taken the phone to the local agent and said that they cannot be fixed. Is this true? I am really disappointed at the customer care service provided by both the Apple registered agent in Malta and the mobile service provider, both of whom keep saying they have nothing to do with the problem! Can anyone help please?

Yes I've been offered a replacement at a cost of €250! But I do not think this is fair as apparently it seems that the problem happened as a result of updating my software! If Apple know about such problems, which after going through some blogs online seems to be quite a common one, should replace / fix the phone at NO COST to the client!!  I am an Apple fan and have 2 tablets and an iphone and have just ordered a 27" imac for my son...I am truly disappointed at this! I am still expecting some decent service from the company which boosts it's loyal service to its customers! I am for one a very dissatisfied customer!! I want my iphone fixed just like it was before I upgraded to IOS 7.1.1

    - i swipe up the screen, and tap on the wifi button,it turns on but wifi doesnt come up
    - its not a dead spot on the screen
    How Push Notifications dont work:
-Facebook,Twitter,Tumblr,Instagram etc wont show any notification signs
-i have to go onto the app to recieve my notifications
    - text messgaes still pop up on my lock screen
I dont know if these sort of problems should be taken to the Apple store,im uncertain on to how much it would cost to get my phone fixed due to i have no warrenty on my phone.
It would be appreciated if you could help me with anything you know that could help me fix my phone.
    Thank You

can you tell me exactly what you did to fix this.  I am having the same problem.  I have deleted the affected apps and reloaded them and it still wont work right.

  • TS1398 My iPhone 4s will no longer pick up or connect to any WiFi network. The WiFi button isn't greyed out or dimmed but the phone won't pick up any of the networks I have been connected to. I have updated to iOS 7, reset the network settings but no luck

The WiFi button is not greyed out or dimmed but the phone won't pick up or connect toany of the networks I have previously been connected to. I have updated to iOS 7, reset the network settings but no luck. Any suggestions?

    If it's grayed out:
Reset Network Settings - if that doesn't fix it, then Backup and Restore AS A NEW DEVICE.
If it's still grayed out, unfortunately that means your Wi-Fi antenna quit, and it needs service.

Have you worked through the Troubleshooting iOS and WiFi knowledge base article?  If not, see if there is info in there that might help.
Is the WiFi greyed out on all WiFi networks or just the one?  If it does this on all then there may be a hardwaer problem that needs attention from the techs at an Apple store genius bar.
Before that, however, try a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if it appears.  That clears a lot of iOS hang ups that occur.

my wifi button has been greyed out so for the past 2 months i've been living on cellular data and its getting really annoying. I've tried everything but it won't work any suggestions? apple should really fix this issue or else i might switch to samsung....

    Hello there, user10103.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some practical instruction for troubleshooting the very issue you're describing:
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Restart your iOS device.
Make sure that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Make sure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
If you still can't turn Wi-Fi on, please contact Apple for support and service options. If you can turn Wi-Fi on but are experiencing other issues with Wi-Fi, see how to resolve those Wi-Fi issues.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • TS1559 I updated my 4S and now I cannot access my wifi due to a glitch in your software.  I have reset, and restored my phone numerous times and my wifi button is still greyed out.   Your phone tech blamed my phone and said it would cost $199 to replace.

I cannot turn my wifi on.  The button is greyed out.  This problem started after I update my software.  First tech I spoke to said it was my problem because I chose to update the software and since I was out of warrenty, I would have to pay $19.99 for service agreement before anyone would talk to me.  The next tech admitted this had happened to ssomeone else and stated it was a problem with my phone triggered by the software update, and because I was 57 days out of warrently, it would cost me $199 for replacement phone.   So basically, anyone that chooses to upgrade their software, risk messing up their access to wifi and have to pay the developer of the software to fix the problem, their program caused.  Does anyone have a clue how to fix this.  Why wasn't I informed of the risks that could occur if I updated my device.  I hNave reset, restored my device with no change.  I have even reset to original with all my data deleted.  Now what??

You are correct. This is a very bad hardware error of the WiFi Chip on the Logic Board. The Chip malfunctioned or was previously damaged, but the initialization error was not detected until you Update/Restore the iPhone recently. The Problem was there, just not detected yet. The repair or replacement of the WiFi Chip is very difficult. Because Apple does not repair iPhone 4S, they only replace iPhone 4S, it costs $199.

FYI, this is a user to user technical support forum.
No one from Apple monitors, reads, or responds here.
    Try the following:
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network settings
If the Wi-Fi is still not working, basic troubleshooting from the Users Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
The vast majority of users upgrade with absolutely no issues.

  • TS3694 someone worked on my cousins iphone 4s. for some reason they did not do a backup on itunes. when she got home the wifi was dim and I could not connect to our wifi. I have been to every site including apple, but still cant get wifi to let me hook up

Please help me to get the wifi out of being dim so I can connect again.

This almost always means there is a hardware failure that requires replacing the phone.  However, first try the suggestions in this support article:

    Hello, susan9941.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand you are not receiving internet via Wi-Fi or through your carrier.  Start with a reset of your network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.  Reconnect to your network and test.  If the issue persists, try going through the steps in the two articles below.

  • Wifi button greyed

I have IPhone 4S for a little over a year. Last Friday, I couldn't connect it with my home WiFi and then the WiFi button turned to grey without any reason. It worked fine for a few days after I upgrade to IOS7. So I am not sure it has anything to do with the upgrade. I tried a few tips after reading the online threads, such as drain out battery, reset network, restore Iphone, nothing works. Haven't had the stomach to try the freezer and hair dryer thing yet. The phone is out of warranty now. What should I do now?
