Wifi card or not?

I have a Mac pro 2009 desktop without an airport wifi card. To enable to connect to the internet wirelessly do I have to purchase a card or can two external base stations ie.. extreme and express, one of which is connected via ethernet cable work in the same manner?

In addition to an internal AirPort card, you basically have two other choices: 1) As you suggested, use two AirPort base stations, and 2) Use a USB wireless adapter instead of an internal card. The latter would be far less expensive of an option.

  • New WIFI card will NOT connect correctly.

    Hi,
I just purchased a Gigafast WF748-CUI wireless card for my iMac G3 running Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.10) and I followed the instructions exactly and did everything right but it will NOT connect. It keeps generating these weird IP addresses beginning with 168. but my networks IP address begins with 192. I had the same problem with my previous WIFI card on the iMac but it would work eventually. I have been messing with this one for like 2 hours and it has shown no sign of working. I even entered a manual IP address in but still nothing. The program for the wireless card says its connected but it is not (or isnt connected to the right IP anyway). What do I do?

Sooo, there's no way the CP has to "Join" a Network? Just says you're connected to 169.x.x.x?
Might try making a New Location in Network CP, turn off all other Ports, the set the IPv4 settings to Manually...
    IP: 192.168.0.5
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.0.1
Assuming the Router is 192.168.0.1, but change the 2nd & 3rd digits accorcdingly.

    Hi,
My X200 laptop was installed with windows xp professional SP3 and after nearly a year using it smoothly, I suddenly get in to trouble!
My wifi card is now occationally disappear in the device manager (so I cannot connect to the wireless network). Those are some case the trouble arise:
    1. Case 1:  After turn on the laptop & OS start-up, the wireless led is not on! (although the wifi switch is at the ON position) and the wifi card is not appear in the list of hardware in Device Manager.
    2. Case 2: After turn on the laptop & OS start-up, the wireless led is not on! (although the wifi switch is at the ON position) and the wifi card is appear in the list of hardware in Device Manager but it can not detect any wireless network (though many wireless networks available!). If I try to disable or repair the wireless network connection, The wireless network connection icon and also the wifi-card in the device manager list disappear! and I have no way to re-enable it!
    3. Case 3: The wifi card is working normally, but suddenly "shut-down" (the wifi led is turn off although the wifi switch still turn on!).
Ussually, restart the laptop help make the wificard to work again. but sometimes I have to restart several times or do not care about it anymore (use wired network as alternative), then one day, it ... works again!
I've tried to run system recovery to the manufacture default state but it's does not solve the trouble.
May Kaspersky Internet Sercurity is the cause!?
So anyone also encounter the trouble like me and what is the solution? Please help.

  • HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook and Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 WiFi Card

I've got a dv7tqe (Quad Edition HP Pavilion dv7), part #XW397AV, notebook computer.  On page 8 of the manual, it says that the
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 wifi card is compatible with this laptop.  However, upon further research online from many sources, including suppliers, it appears that this wifi card is not compatible due to HP's whitelist in the BIOS.
I'd like to know from an HP representative whether this card is truly compatible (it's not listed on PartSurfer for this laptop).
I'd also like to know why HP feels the need for a whitelist for wifi cards.  Is it to force your customers to pay your exhorbitant markups for replacement parts?
I'd really like the answers to these questions.  If it's not compatible, then it shouldn't be listed in the manual.
I'm also posting this as a warning to potential future HP customers that these types of inconsistencies as well as gouging their customers for replacement parts is commonplace for HP products.

    Hi:
This is a consumer to consumer forum.
You will not receive any answers to your questions from anyone speaking on behalf of the company (HP).
It is more complicated than the wireless cards having to be listed in the service manual as supported.
    1. They must also have the HP part # on them, or they will not work.
    2. There are a few cards listed in the service manuals that have the wrong part numbers, and no one knows the right part number.
So, when you think you have the right part number, you sometimes get the wrong card which may or may not work.  It just so happens that the Intel 6230 is one of those cards which no one can seem to find the right part # for.
Therefore, changing a wireless card in any HP notebook--especially a consumer model like yours is nothing short of a nightmare.
    3. No one has an answer for the whitelist issue. If you want to believe that it is to force customers to pay exorbitant markups for replacement parts, that is certainly your prerogative.
If you don't want to pay HP's prices, do what I do and go on eBay and query your search by the HP part number and get a used but tested and working wireless card for pennies on the dollar.

  • Can I replace stock wifi card with an Intel 6235 Wifi/Bluetooth PCI-e card in my N580?

I have a PCI-e WiFi/BT combo card that worked in my HP laptop, but when I put it in the N580, It would not boot and said the wifi card was not authorized and I would have to remove it and replace with an authorized card. There are SO many different card available, I just want to find the correct one that will fit in the BIOS Whitelist.
I'm looking for a Dual Band wifi with Bluetooth 4.0 preferred. Something like this. Would this one on eBay work or is there another card I would need.
    Thanks!

    Hello and welcome,
Whatever card you use, it MUST have a Lenovo FRU number.  Cards that will pass the BIOS whitelist have been modified to provide a specific subsystem ID to BIOS.  Reputable sellers will list the Lenovo FRU if their card is compatible.
For example, a generic Intel 6150NX will not pass the whitelist, but a 6150NX with a 20002543 FRU number will pass.
Here's the list from the N580 Hardware Maintenance Manual:

  • Bad wifi card macbook?

I use a late 2008 MacBook. My wireless internet connection seems to time out and slow dramatically from time to time. If I turn the airport off and then back on, it seems to get it going again. I use ATT U-verse and our connection is typically extremely fast but lately the speed has been intermittent and won't load webpages. However, when I connect my computer directly to the router via ethernet cable, the speed is constant and the problem goes away. Is this a sign of a bad wifi card?

Not necessarily...if the card failed, you'd most likely not be able to use it at all. Which protocol are you using to connect? It may be useful to delete the current network 'location' and recreate to see if that helps.

  • AR9285 wifi card drivers missing

My wifi card is not working after installation of Oracle enterprise Linux 6 x64 version.

You can install software this way, but it won't be managed by yum or rpm. This can be a disadvantage if you later decide to upgrade the system or install other software that may cause a software or dependency conflict.
The Elrepo project provides a lot of additional hardware drivers and related software for RHEL based systems, check http://elrepo.org/tiki/tiki-index.php. You may have to test if a particular software works with the Oracle UEK kernel, but it might be worth a try. You can install the repository configuration file and then use yum to install software as usual.
    http://elrepo.org/tiki/tiki-index.php
Or fetch and install the package directly, for instance:
    yum install http://elrepo.reloumirrors.net/elrepo/el6/x86_64/RPMS/kmod-compat-wireless-3.3-2.n.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm

  • DV6725ee WIFI card upgrade

    Hi,
I have a Pavilion DV6000 (DV6725ee) I am trying to upgrade the Mini PCI-e Wifi card, having looked at the service book I purchased a BCM94321MCP1, which is a listed compatabile device, however on installing and booting the laptop it hangs with a message saying that the WIFI card is not a compatabile one.
Is there a way to boot with this card installed or is there a compatatible BroadCom card that I can use?
Currently I am back to using the Intel one that is provided, but is tempermental.
Any help will be gladly appriciated.

    Hi:
If you bought it from HP with the HP part # on it, it should have worked, and I would have no idea why it didn't.
I have a dv6810us and it uses the same card (for use in the USA/Canda, part # 434661-001.
I bought mine used on eBay for less than $10 a year or so ago. Works great.
You can only buy the card with the HP part number on it, or it will not work.
If that is what you did, then buy on eBay and query only by the part number.
Do not buy a card unless you see one with the actual picture of the card with the part # on it.
Here is a link to the 434661-001 cards available on eBay.
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=434661-001&_sop=15
If you don't live in the USA/Canada then do your search by part # 434661-002.

  • Supported Dual Band Wifi Card for s230u Twist?

I just bought the s230u Twist and realized that the Intel 2230 wifi card is *not* dual band (2.4 GHz only).  I also realize that the BIOS has a whitelist for mini-pci cards and need to know if there are any dual band cards that are supported.  Thanks.

    Hey there guys,
Jccheng, the ThinkPad a/b/g/n Wireless & Bluetooth 4.0 (2x2 ABGN & BT 4.0) is a dual band adapter that is compatible and comes as upgrade with the ThinkPad Twist s230u. The 802.11a only runs on a 5Ghz Frequency, and the 802.11n can run on either. I have listed all the adapter options with part numbers below:
    04W3763 Cybertan BCM43228+BCM20702 abgn WLAN & BT 4.0 Combo (ThinkPad a/b/g/n)
    04W3764 Liteon BCM43228+BCM20702 abgn WLAN & BT 4.0 Combo (ThinkPad a/b/g/n)
    04W3765 Intel 2x2 11bgn + BT4.0 Combo Jackson Peak1 (Centrino 2230)
As an option, you can call the Lenovo Contact Center, 1-800-426-7378, for a Parts Only order. Hope this helps!

I have not had to try installing the WiFi card driver myself. The support downloads are here if you haven't read through the materials :

Does the Hotsync Log indicate that the driver was installed?

  • Is really not possible to install  a WIFI card in my Quad?

I am being told that the only way to insall a WIFI card/upgrade kit in my Quad G5 is to take it in to a certified tech. Being overseas right now limits that option. Can I not just take the screwdriver to it and follow a visual manual(link need here if you know of one) and put that puppy in there? I am of the impression that i have to remove the whole CPU unit to get behind there to the location on the mother board where it is to slot in.
Whats the real scoop- is this just being said to rack up the $ or is there some special tool that is needed or is it too delicate an operation?
    Thank you,
    -todd

If the technician at the shop is competent, he has given you a diagnosis that should have identified the problem.  You could run the Apple Hardware Test to verify the findings:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Note the Apple Hardware Test is not definitive.
Go to the iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com web sites.  They have parts and installation instructions.  To install an Airport card is fairly easy.
