WiFi Connections: HP laptop unable to find 5Ghz wireless signal?

Hello this is my first post   I just purchased my first laptop and my first wireless router and have been setting them up. Laptop: HP touchscreen Pavilion 15 notebook 15-n088ca with windows 8.1 (fully updated) Router: D-Link Dual Band AC1000 2.5GHz & 5GHz bands DIR-810L I set up the router and worked out the kinks and updated the software.  My laptop finds and connects with the 2.5GHz Band anywhere in the house.  My laptop does not even find or see the 5GHz Band.  However my Galaxy Tablet finds both bands and can connect with both, thought the 5GHz seems weaker. I noticed that my Galaxy Tablet finds a lot more wi fi networks than my laptop (that are in houses around the street). I need help troubleshooting and problem solving.  I believe my laptop should find the 5Ghz Band and be able to connect. So I'm hoping this is a software or driver issue, and just a setting that needs to be adjusted.  Any help would be appreciated.  I don't know much about Wi Fi drivers, but I"m a Vista survivor, so I should be able to solve this. I don't even know what program runs the WiFi software on my laptop? Or where to find it?  Thank You

You're very welcome. You did not buy the wrong router. It is just that your notebook can't transmit and receive on the 5.0 GHz band. it is always good to have a dual band router just in case you have other devices like cell phones or tablets, wireless desktop PC's that can use the 5.0 GHZ band. Now in reference to your question regarding if you can purchase a dual band card for your notebook... HP has this horrible policy of locking out any wireless card not listed in the service manual from working.  This is done through a colloquial term called a BIOS "whitelist." The whitelist has all of the hardware ID's and other aspects of the supported wireless cards in a small database in the BIOS. If a card is installed and its hardware ID, etc does not exactly match what is in the BIOS whitelist, the notebook will halt on boot until the unsupported card is removed. Many times--even if there is a wireless card listed in the service manual, for some reason or another, it won't work. So, normally installing a different wireless card other than the one that came with your notebook is a daunting task to say the least. Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.  See item 17 in Chapter 3, on page 24. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03883388.pdf Unfortunately, there are no supported dual band cards for this model series. They are all listed as b/g/n as you can see. The Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 WLAN module is a dual band card but you have to have a model PC that was made for folks that live in Japan in order for it to work.

Try again.  It is possible Apple's update server was overloaded when you tried before.

  • HT3728 AIRPORT UTILITY IS UNABLE TO FIND ANY WIRELESS DEVICE 5.6.1

Ok So I have bought a 2TB Time Capsule, for the past few weeks we have been doing our backups on it etc and just using our already installed Netgear wireless router. Tonight I decided I would "extend an already existing wireless router" - after following all the steps etc and then clicking apply etc, the Airport Utility said that it would need to restart the time capsule etc. After about 5 mins and it looked like it had frozen, airport utility re-started and now all i get is:
"Airport Utility is Unable to find any wireless device. Make Sure the Airport Wireless Device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan"
I have clicked Rescan like 10 times
I have quit and restarted Airport Utility as well as my Mac OSX 10.5.8
I have pulled the Time Capsule plug out of it and restarted it
I have turned of my airport on my computer and turned it back on again
I have read a number of posts - yet nothing seems to give me any more options other than to rescan.

If you are trying to connect the Time Capsule to the Netgear router using a wireless only connection, Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature was designed to only work with other Apple routers. It is extremely unlikely that this setting would work with a Netgear product.
You will need to start over again and perform a Factor Default Reset on the Time Capsule and then re-configure it back to the original settings that you set up previously.

  • Intermittent wifi connectivity on laptop

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. I have an HP Elitebook 8530w. It's running Windows 7. When I open Firefox, I can get on the internet, but after a few minutes, it stops working properly an the connection will go in and out. I've tried connecting an ethernet cable directly and the problem remains. All other devices in the house work properly over wifi or ethernet. I haven't installed any new programs or visited any strange sites. I try connecting to anotehr wireless signal and teh problem remains
I install all the Windows 7 updates and I have the latest version of Firefox. My anti-virus says there are no viruses and Malwarebytes says there is no malware.
I called my ISP yesterday after the connection had stopped again and the helpful tech guy had me go into a safe mode. I was able to connect to the internet again so he thought it was an issue with software. He suggested two options:
    1) Do a system restore
    2) Reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows 7
I tried to do a system restore to a point before I noticed the problem. It failed to restore to that older point and I don't know why.
Before I Google how to reformat a hard drive and re-install Windows, I was hoping someone might have another idea. I tried Googling my problem, but the best suggestion I could find was to change my DNS settings to Google's. I tried that, but it didn't make any difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Surely no one else has seen this or at least have an opinion?

  • Share iphone's wifi connection with laptop?

I've got a 1st gen Macbook Pro that has very weak wifi reception. I often connect my wife's Macbook to mine so I can share her wifi connection.
I've seen the reverse question asked and answered that you can share a Apple laptop connection with an iPhone but can I plug an iPhone into my MBP and use its wifi connection? I know edge tethering is not supported but I don't see why not wifi.

The iPhone can not share its internet connection (WiFi or EDGE). Its a process known as tethering and it is not supported.

  • My Toshiba Laptop , can't find my wireless router

My toshiba Satellite L500D Laptop , after 9 months after it was bought , can't find my wireless router anymore . I had a look over the internet and have worked out the problem is connected to the wireless finder and it won't fix because the combinatio Fn + F8 is not working ??? I really need help please !!
So far i have tried Following the laptop help and troubleshooting methods (COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME) i have tried what worked for some people to do with the flash cards.....

Let me see if I can help.
The Flash cards usually do not fail once installed.   For FN/F8 to work you need to have the right utility.  Also you need to have working and properly enabled Wireless devices.  If they are not then you will not have this option.
Is your wifi actually working.  Does it see any Access Points?  Can you go to Device Manager to see if the Wifi is not banged out?  Not sure but you can check to see if there is a wifi switch on the computer.  Look around the edge.  Some machine have this switch to enable the antenna.
When you say Flash cards do not work.  Is it the FN/F8 only or all cards.  FN (F1-F9).  If they do not work reply back and I will try to help you with the flash cards and then work on your wifi problem.
    Good Luck,

  • Unable to find apple wireless device

    H
My connection to the internet was created by a technician from the ISP company who came and fitted everything and for my iMac it appears fine, as I can connect to the internet with my iMac but I am not sure how.
When I try to connect other hardware to the network eg iPod touch and Macbook. When I run the airport utility I get the response that Airport utility was unable to find any Apple wireless device.
I know that it maybe something very easy to fix but does anybody have any ideas, I can't find any suggestion in the Airport extreme user guide.
Look forward to you comments and help.
    Thanks

    James, welcome to the discussions!
    Try the following.
    Power down your Extreme.
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Extreme directly to your computer.
Now open AirPort Utility again and your Extreme should be identified so you can set it up. Once you have it configured, you can disconnect the ethernet cable if your computer will be connecting wirelessly.
    Post back on your progress.

  • IMac Intel first generation finds no wireless signal

I recently had Apple replace the hard drive in my 2 year old Intel based iMac. I then restored all my lost data (since it was a new hard drive) using Time Machine. Everything works great, but my computer no longer recognizes ANY wireless signals. My work laptop and my iPhone find both my wireless router and a number of my neighbors'.
Airport is turned on and everything looks to be the way it should be in terms of system settings.
Is it possible they forgot to reconnect the antenna to my wireless card when they replaced the hard drive? (I have no knowledge of what the interior of my iMac looks like so I don't know if they are located close together.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Unfortunately it was a blinding flash of the obvious that fixed my issue...
Simply rebooting the iMac brought it back to life.
    Duh.
I assumed that since Apple usually forces reboots after updates if they are required that this didn't require one, apparently it did.

  • I have an I phone 3 gs and unless I stand next to a router It cannot find a wireless signal.I guess the phone is broken. Also I don't believe you have to pay for apple to ask that question?

I have an I phone 3gs which for the last few months cannot find wi-fi signals unless I stand next to a wireless modem. To annoy me even more I called apple to find out if the phone is unserviceable and they want money to tell me if it's broken!!! Is this bill gates in disguise?

The netgear is not going to work very well.. and not at all unless it is universal wireless extender.. you cannot use WDS method.
If it does support universal wireless then make sure the airport uses a rational SMB compatible wireless name.. not an apple name which is 35 characters long with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
So nice AE name.. AEwifi and actually while you are trying.. fruitlessly to do this.. use AE24ghz and AE5ghz (so different names on the different bands)
Assuming your AE is gen3 or greater.
You should also fix the wireless channel at least for 2.4ghz since the netgear is probably only going to repeat 2.4ghz so use channel 11, as a trial.
And use no wireless security as a test.. if that works.. then use WPA1 & 2.. as often old equipment using WPA2 is not compatible.
If it fails with simple name.. fixed channel and no security. Sorry it is not compatible at all.. it happens.
If your AE is G wireless or earlier model.. really the time has come for replacement.
If your Express is G wireless model it is not supported.. and is too old to bother with expect I guess if you want to run audio to a speaker.
You must use older 5.6 utility to do this.. so do you have a computer running older OS.. up to Mountain Lion it is easy to install with a bit of manipulation.. later is much harder .. or windows computer anywhere or available to you.

  • IPhone 3G isn't finding my Wifi unless right next to the router. When moved downstairs, it loses connection and is unable to find wifi. Help please?

I have an iPhone 3GS 8GB that works perfectly and finds my WiFi no problem wherever I am in my house. My mother, however, has just brought an iPhone 3G 8GB that cannot find our WiFi unless it is within a metre of the router
I phoned Apple and the woman on the phone said to reset the router and modem, done that but I still have the same problem. She also suggested about updating the iPhone 3G, but iTunes is telling me that its software is up to date .... "This version of the iPhone software (4.2.1) is the current version"
My iTunes is also up to date (version 10.6.3.25)
I have also tried resetting the network settings on the phone, turning the WiFi on and off on the phone and turning it on and off (someone said that might have worked)
Has anyone came across this problem before? And if so, how can I fix it?

The case has always been on and it hasn't been an issue before. I tried it just to be sure but the issue persists. There's also no authorised service providers in Dublin, Ireland according to the apple website. Phone wasn't bought with a contract so my service provider wouldn't help me out there either. Looks like a repair costs 250 bucks? If the antenna is still working when i'm next to the router does that just mean it's come loose or something? Should I look into replacing or repairing it myself?
The problem could be due to a loose antenna but it's impossible to say for sure.
If you would like to see what a repair to this area would entail see here: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+5+Wi-Fi+Antenna+Replacement/10897
it's not for the faint of heart.

  • Airport Utility unable to find "Apple Wireless Devices"

I have a windows7 acer notebook and the airport utility can no longer find my time capsule.
My internet connection is fine and I even have the time capsule mapped as my Z: drive and can access it but the airport utility cannot see it.
    Any thoughts?

The solution to this after you get the brain dead apple message is to go to the file menu in airport and select configure other. Then enter 10.0.1.1 and this will bypass apple's brain f-rt and simply open the configuration screen for the airport.
You can use the same method for airport express extending your network, although you will have to do some research under the advanced menu to get that IP address. My express is currently 10.0.1.39. Keep these in a textedit note on your computer for easy access. Every time I change my airport password on my base station both my airport expresses will go brain dead, and about half the time the base station disappears too. Now I just smile and use this solution.
I am certain that most apple geniuses are not aware of this solution, because this problem is all over the net with no solution. Its pretty obvious Steve Jobs never sets up his own airports.

  • Unable to find HP5510 wireless printer

I have had a HP5510 Photosmart printer for over 6 months.  Until last week it was working well and used as a wireless printer from my iMac (Mac OSX 10.7.4).  For some reason the wireless connection to my iMac stopped working.  I unistalled the driver, downloaded the latest version from the HP website and started to run the installation.  All went well until the set up screen asks me to disconnect the USB cable from the printer.  At this point an error message advises me that it can't find the HP5510 printer.
I checked that the printer is correctly connected to my router (both from the touch screen of the printer and from the router control panel).
I have unistalled and reinstalled the HP driver several times but I always experience the same problem.  I also noticed that the HP5510 printer wasn't listed on the list of wireless networks when I click the wi-fi icon on my iMac.
Any help or hint to resolve this problem would be very welcome.
    Thank you
P.S. The printer works well when connected with a USB cable

How did you determine that the connection was correct?

That is a clue that the connection is NOT correct.
Did you set the IP address for the printer as automatic (dynamic) or manual (static)? If the former, i.e., automatic, then the IP address may have changed via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) from when you originally setup the printer for wireless. Print a Network Configuration page to find the current IP address of the printer. Then check that current IP address matches in the wireless setup of the printer.
