WiFi Connections thru another Mac

I apologize in advance if this is a very simplistic question. I have a 6 node home network, all wired with CAT5 for 4 mac's and 2 windows PCs. I discovered recently that my Mac Mini has a wifi antenna built in and I can now have some of my laptops connect to the network thru wifi, and I do this as well with my iphone 3G. No worries.
But consider my network topology for a second. Everything is wired, except that wifi is made possible with my Mac Mini, which is also wired to my network but has its own wifi service for other devices. So here's the question. When I try to sync iphone apps with my MacPro thru wifi, they don't see each other (I'm talking specifically about two iphone apps that sync to Mac apps, 1Password and MacFamilyTree). Is this because the wifi is only connected to the Mac Mini, and doesn't let wifi connected devices see my Mac Pro? Do I have a network config problem or am I thinking about this wrong?
Any advise is really appreciated!
Thanks
Jmac

apple2be,
I too have a wired network in my home. Usually, I leave the Airport off, but curiosity got the better of me and I had to try to recreate your situation. My network lives in the 10.1.1.x IP range. I enabled Airport on one of my machines and set it to share the internet connection from ethernet to Airport (mimicking your Mac Mini). I then enabled Airport on a second machine (representing the iPhone) and connected to the Airport network created by the first machine. I looked at the IP address of the Airport connection on the second machine and found it to be in the 10.1.2.x range. As I suspected, the Mac Mini is acting as a router/wireless access point and is performing NAT between the 10.1.1.x and 10.1.2.x networks. Your iPhone can probably see your MacPro, but your MacPro cannot likely see your iPhone in much the same way that a computer from the internet (hopefully) cannot see past your router (firewall) into your home network.
You may want to try using your MacPro as the wireless access point instead of the Mac Mini. The iPhone may be able to sync to the Pro in this situation, however, I fear you'll run in to much the same problem.
Good luck and please let us know how this works out for you. I'm very interested for curiosity's sake...

The circuit of my macbook is dead yet the hard drive is fine.  I need to access a file from the hard drive, how can i do this? The mac turns on the screen freezes as bright blue.  Is there a cable i can connect to another mac that will let me transfer the file?

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

Which means exactly what? One iPad can connect intermittently and one doesn't connect at all?  This makes it sound to me like you are having WiFi issues with both of them. At least that's how I interpret your statement.
Start by rebooting your router. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • Why does my iPhone not show up in iTunes on a mac that has a shared internet connection from another mac?

I have what I would consider a difficult question. I called Apple Care and after she spoke to a senior advisor, the representative ended up saying it wasn't possible.
Having said that, I'm sure this is not a difficult question for people with networking expertise.
    Setup
So...I have a MacBook receiving a WiFi signal via AirPort.
In System Preferences, I have turned on Internet sharing (share airport over Ethernet).
I connected the Ethernet port on my MacBook to the Ethernet port on my MDD PowerMac G4.
At this point, I can successfully browse the web, perform software updates, and view other computers and iTunes libraries on my network from my G4.
    Goal
However, in iTunes on my G4 I would like to use iTunes DJ.
    Tried
    So...I click on iTunes DJ.
I set the settings (button in bottom right) to allow guest remotes, etc.
I turned on iTunes Home Sharing (logged into the same account as by iPhone).
    Problem
However, from the Remote app on my iPhone, I am unable to see the library on my G4.
Also, if I want to pair my iPhone Remote app with iTunes on my G4, I click add Library in the Remote app, but iTunes on the G4 never displays my iPhone in the left column (although I am able to see all other iTunes libraries being shared on the network).
Thus, I cannot connect to iTunes as a guest Remote, nor can I connect as paired remote.
I have successfully done both of these things with computers connected directly to my modem, as well as with computers connected via WiFi.
The problem is connecting devices to computers that get their internet connection though another computer via internet sharing.
    Question
So my question is about Internet sharing itself. Is it not a fully featured ad-hoc network? Does it only provide browsing capabilities and the ability to browse networked computers, but NOT devices such as an iPhone? I don't see the difference; my iPhone is on the same network as the computers, so why is there no communication between it and computers that gain their Internet connection through another computer?
I really hope someone out there who is an expert in networking can help me out with this. Or if it truly is impossible, if someone could explain to me why that is the case, I would also appreciate it.
ps. I usually have my MacBook sharing its Internet connection through an old router that I am using as a switch because I share the connection with three other computers. And if it isn't obvious, the modem is downstairs, and the MacBook, old router being used as a switch, and other computers are upstairs where there is no Ethernet wired.
Thank you in advance for any help.

  • HT1386 Sync problem after connecting to another Mac

My daughter connected my iPad 2 to another mac computer. Now all the songs on the iPad are gone and the "Sync" within iTunes starts but does not complete and no music is being transferred (neither via USB nor via Wi-Fi). Any ideas? Cheers!

You really don't have to explain. I had young kids at one time.
If you connect the iPad to your syncing Mac - the one that you usually use - and it will not sync - try quitting iTunes, restart your Mac and restart your iPad as well.
Also, make sure that the music is still selected to sync in iTunes in the Music Tab, when the iPad is connected to the Mac, while iTunes is running and with the iPad selected in the devices tab.

  • Want to connect to another Mac in another state, Best Way?

G'day, I help my brother out with his accounting for his business, at the moment I am using logmein to connect and do what I have to. It is very choppy and a bit hard to work with and cant wake his mac up if it goes to sleep.
I'm just wondering if there is a better way to connect to him? I use a Mac Book Pro and he has the latest iMac.
At home I am a part of a private network to work so I just VNC into all the computers on that network, that works quite well most of the time. I have a time machine with a linksys broadband firewall router / VPN endpoint.
I had a look at back to my mac but he had some errors, my end says it will work with another mac with it enabled.
What would the best solution be?
    Thank you

I'm not sure how that will effect my current private network with work?
The network on your end doesn't matter much, as long as you're not behind some kind of firewall that prohibits screen sharing connections. What's important is the network on the other end, as you'll need full control of it in order to set up access to your brother's machine. But if you read my other post that I referred you to and it sounds like Greek, you're probably better off just sticking to either LogMeIn or Back To My Mac.
If I did try it do you just set up a shared mac in the finder window and screen share somehow?
You'd turn on screen sharing in System Preferences -> Sharing on your brother's machine, making sure that you know an appropriate username and password on his computer. Then, from your machine, the easiest thing to do is to open /System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing (adding this to the Dock would be a good idea if you do this a lot) and type in the IP address of your brother's home network. See the notes on that IP address in that post I gave you a link to.
Anyone had any experience with back to my mac?
No idea, I haven't needed it, so I haven't tried it. Someone else will have to chime in on that one.

  • "Connection Failed" when trying to connect to another Mac on my wireless network.

    Hi,
I am having an intermittent problem with the connectivity between my iMac and Mac Pro - the latter is the media server for our house. Occasionally my Apple TV's seem to lose connectivity to the Mac Pro too which is a real pain. Both Macs are running Mavericks and the Apple TVs are running the latest software too.
If I try to connect to the Mac Pro in Finder on my iMac, the Mac Pro is there but when I click on it I get "Connection Failed". Rebooting both computers seems to fix the problem but is far from ideal when mid way through a film!
The messages in console on my iMac when I try to connect to the Mac Pro in Finder is:
    14/03/2014 10:20:33.542 sharingd[253]: SDSharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned -5999
14/03/2014 10:23:34.180 locationd[82]: could not open write stream for /var/db/locationd/clients.plist
I'm not sure if this provides a clue?
    Thanks in anticipation,
    Rob

I've managed to connect OK using Connect as. So at least that part is solved. I will see if I can get any diagnostics as to why the Apple TV drops out.

  • How can I connect to another Mac using only Ethernet while Wifi is on?

    Anyone has any ideas!
I have a MBP 2013 (Late) running Mavericks and I would like to connect to my other Mac (via a switch) through Thunderbolt Ethernet.
Basically I would like to connect only via ethernet to my other mac.
I would in the mean time like to leave my Wifi on the MBP so that i can access the internet etc..
So the problem is my mac (MBP) would jumpt to wifi to connect to my other Mac Pro (the mac pro has wifi on as well)
    Any solutions?
    Thanks!

No. What you want to do isn't possible.

  • All of our iOS devices are displaying the message that they can't connect to the Internet.  All show good wifi connections.  Our Macs all connect to the internet just fine suggesting that the network is good.  I'm stumped.

Airport Utility on the Macs show good internet signals but on our two iPads and my iPhone 5 there are no indications of internet connectivity.  One of the iPads is running iOS 7 but the other is still running iOS 6.  The iPhone 5 is updated to iOS 7.
Is there a setting switch that if set incorrectly would create this problem?  Like I said before, all the iOS devices stopped internet connectivity at the same time.
Update:  Well while I was typing this I was called away to help get people to bed etc.  And when I got back I tried all four iOS devices and, now, they all connect to the internet.  I don't understand it.  Two iPhones, different iOS versions, and two iPads, different generations and also different iOS versions, all decided that they would disconnect themselves from the internet but stay connected to the wifi network.  Somebody must have an explanation for what just happened.  Remember it isn't the router because the Macs all had uninterrupted internet connections.  Weird!

I used to have a satellite connection to the internet. When ever the power went off I was told to turn on the devices in a specific order for them to work properly.
Try shutting off every device including all iPads, iPhones, computer, Wi-Fi router and Satellite modem. Then turn them on one at a time in the order listed below. Be sure to wait until each device completes its start up routine before starting up the next item. When my satellite modem was restarted it often had to download an update. The time this took varied with the update. So be sure the Satellite modem is up and connected to the Satellite before going to the next device.

    2. Wi-Fi Router
    3. Your computer. Check to see that your computer connects to the internet.

  • Dropping WiFi Connections after new Mac Min and Upgrade

First of all does anyone know why this discussion was archived when there was never a solution posted?
        https://discussions.apple.com/message/12586041?tstart=0#12586041
Secondly (why I found that thread among many others addressing the same problem). I received a new Mac Mini for XMas (cool, I needed it) which worked fine with my other computer and devices (2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 Win7 Laptops and 2 Win7 desktops) for a couple days, so I thought. Now all these devices got along very well until Mr. Mini comes along. Then I note wireless drops occasionally, it seemed to come back so I wasn't too upset, yet and decided to deal with it later and enjoy my vacation.
Now, after I allowed Leopard to do its upgrade (I had deferred that) I now have all the above devices dropping wifi and physical LAN connections as long as this Mini is powered on. I shut it off, Internet is blazing, I turn it on, Internet falters and screeches to a halt.
Since all my other devices have worked cooperatively for several years and this device comes along and crashed the party im pretty convinced its not my router or computers. I am not interested in trial and error here. i have many better more important things to do and this is Apples responsability to figure out. I am a very savy IT dude (career professional) and want to get to the bottom of this for everyone.
Soooo.... What changed? Why does this device kill my network when it is turned on (note, no alterations from out-of-the box to any network protocol or config.) and why does a thread (one of many) without a solution get trumped on by Apple?

  • How to connect with another Mac via AFP

My parents have a Mac (10.4.8) which is in a different location than my own. They would like to send me some files however, I thought it would be easier if I could just log into their computer from mine, and grab the files myself.
How is this done, if at all? I have the AFP address of their computer (file sharing is on as is Apple Talk on both machines) but can't seem to get this to work by using the connect to server command?
    Any help much appreciated!

If you have broadband internet then why not send the files via email. Quick, simple.
If your computers can be connected via Ethernet or wireless, then you can use file sharing. However, you must be able to communicate directly. That means connecting an Ethernet cable between the two computers or being able to communicate wirelessly - wireless modem, Ethernet modem connected to a wireless router, and Airport cards in both computers. • Can I have wired and wireless simultaneously - and connect via another Mac?

Here's my problem: My eMac (Feb 2005 running Leopard 10.5.8) is great except that it drops the ethernet cable internet every 15 minutes or so. "Sleep and wake" and I'm back on the internet for another 10-20 minutes, but this is not a long-term solution.
OK so I say that I will get a D-Link wireless USB adapter for the eMac (it has bluetooth, but not WiFi). Fine, except then the D-Link DIR-635 router that sends the WiFi signal is too far away and too weak. But I have another computer to which I can plug-in the Ethernet CABLE. Can I then connect the eMac via a wireless (airport) sharing? NOTE: At this time the ISP Modem goes to a DIR-635 router (a wired and wireless router) and the cable goes up 2 flights of stairs to the eMac. I'd plan to then plug-in the PBG4-12" to the cable instead of the eMac; and then connect the eMac via wireless sharing if that is possible. (The PBG4 does NOT drop the signal via wired ethernet - it is a problem with the eMac not the cable or router).
BUT then how to print? My MP640 printer is set-up for wired printing only right now. And for a number of reasons, I really want to keep it on wired (not wireless)-- I use this with another computer etc. etc. and wired gives me more selections for printing...
Any comments on this possibility and then I'll reply with comments and/or ideas-- THANKS!
    Best regards,
    Steve Schulte

If you use two routers then you should have the main one (connected to modem) as the official router. The second one should be configured to extend the existing network (you will need to consult its manual to find out how that's done.) If you try using two routers independently, then they will tend to interfere with each other because both are trying to deliver IP numbers on the network. So if the printer ends up on the secondary router then a machine connected to the main router may not be able to connect to the printer.

Is there a way that I can remotely connect from my Macbook to his iMac and "take control" of his iMac to help him setup his computer, and walk him through things while explaining thing to him over the phone?
