Wifi connectivity - Yosemite and dual band routers (i.e. BT Home Hub)

This is working for me so far after all previous tips on other Discussions proved only to be temporary.  This is the only one that enabled my MBP to accept password for the SSID.
From BT Home Hub - 2011!!
The BT Home Hub 4 and Hub 5 are dual band with two wireless frequencies for devices to connect to: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. On both Hubs, the default setting has the same network name (or SSID) for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Connecting a typical 5GHz-capable device to this single SSID will automatically connect the device to both the 2.4 and 5Ghz frequency at the same time.
However, not all dual band devices behave the same way and some device software does not cope well with a single SSID for both frequencies.
As a result:
the device may not connect wirelessly to the Hub
it may not connect to 5GHz frequency even in the same room
the wireless connection might be intermittent
the wireless connection might be very slow
Devices where there are known to be problems include:
Some Apple devices including iPhone 5 and Apple TV
some Android smartphones
Xbox
For some devices you can solve this problem by having different network names (SSIDs) for the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands. To set this up, follow these steps:
Open your web browser on a device connected to the Hub and go to bthomehub.home. This will open the Hub Manager
Click on Advanced Settings and enter your Hub admin password when prompted. Unless you've changed it, you'll find the default Hub password on the Hub settings card
Click on Continue to Advanced Settings
Click on Wireless
Click on 5GHz
Change 'Sync with 2.4 Ghz' to No
Change the 'Wireless SSID' to a new name (we recommend just adding '5GHz' to the end of the existing SSID name so you'll know which one is which)
Click Apply to save the changes
After a few minutes you should see two BT Home Hub SSIDs in the list of networks on your device. All of your devices will still automatically connect to the original SSID name, which will be the 2.4GHz.
If you have existing dual band devices you want to connect to 5GHz only, you'll need to connect them to the 5GHz SSID that you've renamed. AND RESTART the hub - PJ
Note- Even though wireless speeds at 5GHz can be significantly faster than 2.4GHz, the range of a 5GHz connection is not as good. As a result, you may need your device closer to your Hub (than you'd need to when using the 2.4GHz SSID) to get the best performance possible."

Sadly it didn't last...
I just posted this on BT Home Hub users forum. and the big Yosemite/wifi Discussion
"Sorry to awaken this topic from the dead....
I am using HH5a, opted in to FON, and Os10.10 MacBookPro
I have no problem whatsoever connecting and staying connected to 2.4ghz
I struggle since OS10.10 to either connect or stay connected to 5ghz
A persistent issue with trying to connect to 5ghz is the response "invalid password"  Only occasionally in the past 3 months has this not been a problem
the app WifiExplorer shows today that the only other networks on the same channels as my networks are the FON wifiX - both of which I presume are using my router/wifi as when I manually change channels these move with me.
Signal strength on 2.4  ghz is between 77 - 85, 5ghz 80+/- 1
Noise and signal noise ratio a lot higher on 2.4 than 5
(There is lots more info on wifi explorer but I dont know its relevance/meaning)
I have tried using manual channel selection and Smart Wireless and can't see much difference in 5ghz connection
Given a choice I would prefer to stay in FON but if there is overwhleming evidence that these hot spot networks are affecting mine, I would consider opting out.  Views/ guidance please.  Thanks.  And a Happy New Year too."
IS ANYBODY ELSE using BT Home Hub5a having this same issue?  I BELIEVE it has largely if only been since upgrading to 10.10.1 but can't swear to it.
IS IT SIGNIFICANT THAT SOMETIMES THE PASSWORD TO 5GHZ network is accepted and other times not?

  • Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro connecting to 5ghz dual band wifi?

I just found something strange. Under Windows, my lenovo yoga 2 pro does not see my 5ghz wifi connection (from my dual band router). But I just booted under Linux Mint, and was able to connect to the 5ghz connection without issues. Any idea why this would be?

Dual Band: 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time:
Your MBP can connect to both.
If the Bands each have a different Name, you can choose by hand, if not it connects to the strongest signal.
Click the wireless icon and you see the name of the network you are connected to, If you see the other band name you can choose that.
Click the wireless icon in the menubar while hoding the Alt(option) key: it gives the specififcs of the band you are connected to.

  • DUAL BAND ROUTERS

I have a cisco 6500 dual band router.
For some reason when going through the setup I can only get my HP 410 to see the guest network and not the primary network. The HP utilities can see it when run from my Notebook but the printer refuses to see it.
On top of that I can see all my neighbors routers as i live in a townhouse development.....
I can connect using the guest network however it is a pain flipping over to it everytime i want to print something.

    Hi,
From your router homepage enter the Wireless settings, then select Manual setup.
Either provide the 2.4GHz network a different SSID and connect to it or disable the 5GHz broadcast.
Once both of the printers are connected to the 2.4GHz network you will be able to print, yje HP printer does not support 5.GHz and therefore dannot locate the network:
802.11n can operate in both the 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz frequency bands (which makes it dual band). However, not all devices that support 802.11n support both frequency bands. So you can't connect a device that uses 802.11n 2.4GHz to a wireless router set to operate at 802.11n 5.0GHz only. All HP printers that support 802.11n use 2.4GHz only

  • Time Machine:  External Hard Drive connected to a dual-band network

I currently have a dual-band network setup using a 1TB Time Capsule (wireless-n only) and an AEBS (wireless b/g) in bridge mode.
My unibody MBP and ATV utilize the Time Capsule, while an older Macbook and MacMini utilize the AEBS. I have Time Machine configured on the MBP to use the Time Capsule for backup.
I have connected an external 500GB hard drive to the AEBS for the purpose of using Time Machine for the Macbook and MacMini. The Airport Utility shows the external drive connected to the AEBS, but when I try to configure Time Machine for the Macbook and MacMini I am only allowed to select the Time Capsule as the destination. Sorry for the long post. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Assuming you have the square Extreme (not the UFO-style), you can use an external USB HDD with it.
Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. USB HDD attached to Extreme) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move any old TM backups (HDD connected directly to the Mac) to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.

  • Wireless Expander WRE54G and Dual Band router WRT610N

I used to have a band G-type network with a Linksys Router and a Wireless Expander WRE54G. It worked fine.
Now I have a WRT610 N Dual Band router. I am trying to connect the WRE54G to the netowrk (using the G-band of course) but it doesn't work. Runnig the Setup utility from the CD (og the Range Expander) ends in a "Site survey" which terminates with an error "Site survey fail". Maybe the installation program is not able to handle the WRT610N.
    Any suggestions?

Press and hold the reset button on WRE for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your Expander, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...
Connect your Expander to a computer, click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>> Network Connections - Right click on the icon for Local area connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the following IP address'- Provide IP Address - 192.168.1.5, Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0...Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window...
Now open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.240. Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...It should open your Expander set-up...
Once you get to the set-up page, change the Expander Settings...While changing the Expander settings you have to make sure that the Wireless Settings(SSID/Network Name and WEP/WPA Key) are identical on both the devices(Router and Expander)...Also make sure to change the Expander's default IP to match your network and Gateway Address should be your Router's address...ex.Expander's IP Address : 192.168.1.240(assuming your router's default IP Address is 192.168.1.1),Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1...
After configuring the Expander you should disconnect it from the Computer and go into Local Area Connection TCP/IP Properties and set it back to Obtain IP Address Automatically...Disconnect the Expander from the computer and power cycle both the devices(Expander and Router) ...Your Expander should be configured...

  • Printers connected to a dual band network

How can I have a laser printer seen by the two networks setup by a dual band extreme?

Thanks for the reply and potential solution Tesserax.
Here is the detailed (and long) version of my problem. I bought a Lexmark S608 printer thinking that since it supports wireless n, that all would be good and I could print and scan wirelessly. Unfortunately, the S60x only supports wireless n in the 2.4GHz band.
So if I downgrade my wireless n to 2.4GHz, the MacBook, Mac Mini and S608 are on the same network and can print and scan wirelessly.
The problem is that even watching YouTube video wirelessly is not possible on the n 2.4GHz band; it stops every few seconds to buffer. I guess I have a lot of interference where I am in the 2.4GHz band (and I don't have 2.4GHz phones). I have tried different channels on the 2.4GHz band but with no success; since I switched to the 5GHz band over a year ago, all has been very good. I tested copying files locally from/to the MacBook and the Mac Mini and wireless n 2.4GHz takes more than five time longer on average than wireless n 5GHz.
If I share the S608 on the TC USB port I will be able to print wirelessly from both the MacBook and Mac Mini, but won't be able to scan from either.
For now, I've attached the S608 to the Mac Mini via USB. I shared the printer via the sharing control panel and that works fine. But I shared the scanner via the sharing control panel and that does not seem to work; I cannot access the scanning function using Preview from the MacBook for example (whereas this was possible when the S608 was connected wirelessly on the n 2.4GHz band).
I looked at creating a WDS network but I have not tried yet because everything I've read says that it will halve your speed at best (and including g (for the printer/scanner) and n seemed to be problematic for most).
So I don't think it is possible, but I was therefore wondering if the dual band feature of the latest TC or AEBS would allow clients to see each other, bridging the 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz network together.
All that to say that the S608 is still a fine printer for my needs, but it would have been practical to be able to scan wirelessly from either the MacBook or Mac Mini. So buyer beware!

Is anyone else experiencing WIFI connection problems when trying to connect to a Verizon Router? All of my other phones, 4 and 4S as well as my Ipad connect flawlessly and have a wide range, yet my Iphone 5 will only connect when I am in the room with the router and disconnects when I am less than 20 feet away.

Then go for one of the old cables with a 30 pin to lightning dock connector
Add an Apple Genuine 30 pin to lightning adapter to fit the iPhone 5 plug into that the car cable
I use several in different scenarios but do buy the Apple product most of the cheap rippoffs do not work correctly

  • N95 8BG "WiFi Connection problems" and "Web: no ga...

Like many users, I could not get my new Nokia (N95 8GB) to work with my WiFi. After many attempts, using the various ideas posted, I came up with a solution that works reliably for me.
First lets deal with "WiFi Connection problems"
    Menu/Tools/Settings/Connection/Wireless LAN
    'Show WLAN availability' = 'Yes'
'Scan for networks' = 'Every 5 minutes'
Some users have suggested choosing 'Advanced Settings' from the 'Options' menu, changing 'Automatic configuration' to 'Disabled' and the either setting 'RTS threshold' to '2346', or setting 'Power saving' to 'Disabled'. I tried both of these but they did not make any difference in my case. However they may make a difference for you, hence their inclusion here.
    Menu/Tools/Settings/Connection/Access Points
Choose 'New access point' from the 'Options' menu
    'Data bearer' = 'Wireless LAN'
'WLAN network name' = If your network is set to broadcast its SSID, use 'Search for networks' then select your network from the list, otherwise use 'Enter manually' and type in the SSID.
'Connection name' = anything you like, but I use the SSID
'Network status' = not sure about this maybe someone can confirm, but I think if the SSID is broadcast then it is 'public', otherwise it is 'private'.
'WLAN network mode' = match this to your access point configuration. Mine is set to 'Infrastructure', so I do not cover the ad-hoc scenario here.
'WLAN security mode' = again I am using WEP so have not covered other scenarios.
'WLAN security settings' = these should match you access point configuration.
'Homepage' = whatever you like. I use 'http://www.google.co.uk', just so that when I start browsing I get something reliable, useful, and dependable. If Google fails to appear it usually means there is something wrong with your config.
Now lets handle the dreaded "Web: no gateway reply"
    Menu/Tools/Settings/Connection/Access Points
Scroll down to highlight the new access point and choose 'Edit' from the 'Options' menu. Now choose 'Advanced settings' from the 'Options' menu.
Assuming you network used IPv4, which most do in my experience, select 'IPv4 settings'. I don't know about IPv6, and don't use a proxy so these are not covered.
The values you enter in 'IPv4 settings', depend upon your network/router settings, and whether you have a DHCP server or not.
Assume your a router IP Address, on the LAN side, is 192.168.0.1, and that it has a DHCP server set to serve addresses in the range 192.168.0.64 to 192.168.0.192, using subnet 255,255,255,0. Since the mobile does not seem able to get an IP Address from the DHCP server we give it a static address 192.168.0.55. Notice this is outside the range sereved by te DHCP server to avoid conflicts.
    We end up with:
    'Phone IP address = '192.168.0.55'
    'Subnet mask' = '255,255,255,0'
    'Default gateway' = '192.168.0.1'
    'DNS address' = 'user defined'
    'Primary DNS address' = '192.168.0.1'
    'Secondary DNS address' = '0.0.0.0'
I used something similar and was at last able to browse the web via wifi.
I hope all of the above helps someone out there.

I have just experienced this problem having been using the WiFi network for months without problems. I tries all the suggestions on these forums including the power settings, turning off WEP, and the fixed IP suggestion and none worked. I even reinstalled the firmware and reconfigured everything. It turned out to be the router. I had rebooted it several times to no effect but the DHCP always gave the N95 the same IP address lease. So I changed the range of IP addresses the DHCP could lease and restarted the N95. It got a new IP and was back working again.
If at first you don't succeed, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it.

  • Connecting ap extreme (dual-band) to ap express b/g via wds

main question: can i have two b/g ap expresses extend the b/g signal from a main dual band station?
either this is way complicated or i'm really slow (i know). i have a new-ish ap extreme dual band (v. 7.5.2) and two older ap expresses (v. 6.3). i thought i was extending the extreme's b/g signal by choosing the "join a wireless network" option, and just learned that option does not extend the b/g signal. maybe i am slow...
i learned that the  ap extreme dual band's checkbox "allow the network to be extended" is only for other N wireless airports (counter-intuitive). i learned that trying to make my remote (but not relay!) ap expresses participate in a wds network, first, causes them to need to be reset. every time. i learned that i need to make the wds setting on the main station FIRST, and option-click on the wireless mode menu (counter-intuitive? sheesh!) i've read several posts about people having problems (one person said apple doesn't really want us to use wds, so that's why it's hidden). i found this page and did all the steps on the main station:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2355832?threadID=2355832&tstart=0
and the result was an amber light w/ a wds error (i saw the amber light in the airport utility window, i didn't check to see if the unit was blinking).
neither the above link, nor the pdf mentioned (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Designing_AirPort_Networks_10.5-Windows.pdf) pages 42-46 mention a wds error or what to do.
w/ the wds error, i still had internet, but could not access the other two b/g ap expresses to make them wds remotes.
2nd-ary question: why is this so hard? why the secret option-click menu? why doesn't the apple help utility spell this out (it only mentions N airport, and says for other devices, to "check the Apple Support Website.")? there are so many posts on this, some are poorly worded (maybe mine too!), some are slightly different scenarios...
    any help is greatly appreciated.
    marc

    Marc,
I would suggest that you decide whether to move back 5-6 years and use WDS....with a tremendous loss of performance on your dual band Extreme....(It becomes a "g" wireless router using WDS and the bandwidth of your entire network will drop by half for each AirPort Express you have on the network).
So, instead of "n" wireless at 130 Mbps, your WDS setup will yield 13 Mbps at best. WDS is very difficult for most users to setup because it is very easy to make a mistake and hard to find your way out when you do.
The "Extend a wireless network" setup will maintain "n" speeds on the entire network with a very small bandwith loss. But, you have to use all "n" devices for this to work, and you can only have "main" and "remotes". There are no "relays" in this setup. It is a much easier setup to configure than WDS.
The Apple document below provides all the details. I could not tell from your post whether you had looked at this.

  • TS1398 My iPhone's wifi connection is slow compared to my other devices at home.

My iPhone's wifi connection is slow compared to my other devices in my house. I'm ranging from 2-3.5 Mbps on the iPhone while my other devices are getting speeds of 35-40 Mbps. I'm right next to my AirPort Extreme ac. I've tried resetting every possible device. I've done a reset of my phone ( no data lost). Any suggestions?

Remove all power from the router for about 15 seconds. If that doesn't fix it check if you have MAC filtering enabled on the router. If you do the iPhone needs to be added to the Allowed list.

  • Apple TV 2nd Generation - wont connect to Itunes on Windows 7 Computer, with BT Home Hub 2

So have been searching around all over the Interweb and cant put my finger on an answer.
Apple TV is up to date and so is Itunes. Connecting via wireless.
Apple TV connects to internet fine, and also allows airplay via Ipad. It is reporting the correct router address so I am assuming it is all on the same network and happy that way.
I can see the Apple TV device in Home hub manager.
In Apple TV and Itunes I have turned on Home Sharing. (In fact tried turning off and on a number of times)
Initially I can see in Apple TV the Library I am trying to connect to. So you select and it goes away for a while and comes back with "Cannot connect to Neils Library"...
So I searched around and looked at ports that you maybe should open on the computer to allow other devices to search for Itunes - TCP 3689 and UDP 5353. So I created a new Application Sharing entry in the home hub, and assigned that to my PC only. (maybe I havent done that correctly? Followed a guide on a port forwarding website)
Weirdly then - when I go back to my Apple TV and look at "computers" on the menu, it can no longer see my Itunes library. Before it could see the library, but errored when trying to connect to it.
Have also tried turning the firewall off.
So I am a bit stuck. Any suggestions or past experience would be gratefully received.
    Thank you!
    Neil

OK - I managed to fix this. Will document for others.
I started to think it was a firewall thing. So I turned off both my Windows 7 firewall and my BT Home hub firewall. It started working!
So turned back on the BT home hub firewall - still working. So it must be a windows 7 firewall.
Went in and checked that Itunes was there as an exception... Yep. So why still not working?
Found out that the entry in my Windows 7 firewall said I-Tunes - but when you looked at the details button it wasnt pointing to a program - it was just blank.
So added a new entry and pointed that at the I-Tunes exe file.
    Now all working...

  • DMA2100 won't connect to newer dual-band N routers

I decided to upgrade my WRT600N router to see if I could get some better overall range out of the GHz band. I first tried the Netgear 900N based on reviews. I had continuous problems trying to get the extender to connect to the router. It could find it, let me enter the WPA2 passphrase, choose DHCP, and then fail at the last step. I then bought the Cisco E4500 router and this router is doing the exact same thing. I have tried no encryption and a manual IP to no avail. I am about to try the new ASUS router but my hopes are not all that great.
Does anyone know what has changed to make the newer routers not want to play nice with the DMA2100?????

By the way, perhaps you can also change the network mode of the 5Ghz to Wireless A only and connect the extender wirelessly to it, that way the 5Ghz will be dedicated to your extender as well as your other media devices.
One possible reason is that the implementation of wireless N draft technology used on the DMA is a far cry from wireless N standard of the E4200 today. In other words, the DMA may or may not be able to communicate well with the newer N routers wirelessly as there have been no enhancements on the firmware of the DMA that would be fitting for the certified N standard today.
    Just my two cents…

  • Macbook Pro WIFI connection slow and intermittent

I recently moved to a new apartment and had Time Warner install our internet/Wifi. My Macbook Pro will connect to the Wifi and work fine for about 30-60 seconds and then become extremely slow, even to the point of no connection most times. I have tried using both the new router and the old router that worked just fine at our old apartment but both behave the same way. I have reset the routers multiple times but that does not fix the situation and I do not believe the router is the problem since my two roommates (one of which uses a Macbook Pro) have no connection problem. My iPhone connects perfectly fine as well. When I am on other Wifi addresses, my Macbook works just fine. Also, my Macbook is only one month old. I called Apple to try and solve the problem and they believe it is an interference problem however the connection remains the same no matter how close or far from the router I am and all other devices don't seem to have interference problems. Any help is very much appreciated!

Might be corrupted network preferences ..
Type or copy paste the following:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Click Go then move all the files in the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
See if that makes a difference.
Your Mac will generate a new SystemConfiguration folder for you.
If that doesn't help, try Wi-Fi diagnostics here >  Wi-Fi: How to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity
