Wifi - Different WEP Key

Hello All,
probably a long shot, but does anyone know how to get the ipod touch to use a different key ID for WEP encryption?
Explanation:
WEP has 4 key IDs. That way you have four choices for when 1 of your keys happens to be compromised. Apple products assume you always use key id 1. The problem is that my company uses 2.

I may be wrong, but my WEP configuration on my Belkin pre-N displays the choice of WEP keys as radio-button choices, which would indicate to me that the router admin must choose which one to be active. i.e. a compromised key would indicate that the WEP key choice would need to be changed at the router, not at the client.
I'll watch for other responses.

  • Non-ASCII WIFI Hex WEP Key in iPhone 1.1.2

I am struggling to connect to my employer's WIFI network. I was able to do this back with older firmware of the iPhone when it would let me specify that the WEP key was Hex. That option doesn't seem to exist anymore.
My employer's key is "1111111111" but it doesn't have an ASCII equivalent that can be typed using the iPhone keyboard. I've looked around and some people mention that if you put a "$" in front of the hex key that it will then force the iPhone to treat it like hex but that doesn't seem to be true.
Please help me figure out what I am doing wrong.
    Thank you,
    Matt

    Matt Cooper1,
WEP Password, and type password means the Mac is seeing it as ASCII password not a hex.
Is your network using 128-bit or 40-bit encryption?
If using 40-bit the ASCII password should be 5 characters, and 128-bit 13 characters to avoid potential hashing issues.
This article discusses that in the "Multiplatform issue" and "Avoiding the issue" sections:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108058
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • WiFi + Netgear + WEP key

    Hi,
I can get my itouch to connect to my netgear router when security is disabled on the router, and I can browse the internet via safari. When I enable security on the router, the itouch correctly prompts for a password. I enter the passphrase on the itouch that I used to generate the WEP key on the router - and the itouch responds "incorrect password for <nnn>" where nnn is my SSID. Am I doing something wrong?
The wireless router is Netgear WGR614v2. I uploaded the current firmware software today.
    Thanks for any insight!

You may need to put in your hex key. It's a series of numbers and letters created from the password that you entered on the router. I'm not sure about the NetGear but on the Linksys you can get the hex key from the router on the key display. I'm guessing that the NetGear has something similar. My suggestion, though, is to switch your router to WAP instead of WEP. WAP is stronger encryption and your touch will only need to enter the password to connect. Many of the older units don't have WAP so if that's the case you'll have to deal with the hex key entry.

  • Wifi has suddenly stopped working. There is an exclamation mark which takes me to network diagnostics. This asks me for network name and password. This is different from the startup wizard which only asked for a WEP key and modem name. What to do?

My wifi has suddenly stopped working on my iMac, after working fine for almost a year. There is an exclamation mark on the wifi bars and when I click it, it takes me to a network diagnostics page. This page asks me for my username and password for the wifi, which I don't have. It is different from the WEP key and modem name, which I originally used to set up my connection. I have not experienced any problems on all my other wifi-enabled devices. Ipod touch, iPad, MacBook all work fine. What should I do?

The name is the name of the network you created on the router. The password is the WEP password. You shouldn't be using WEP at all, as it's insecure and also seems to cause connection failures. Use WPA 2 Personal. If your router doesn't support it, get a new one.

  • IMac - WEP-key not accepted (wifi)

My iMac has been working fine during 1 month.
Then all of a sudden, when starting up, I got a message, that I was no longer connected to my wifi-network.
When I choose my (secured) network in the list, and type my WEP-key, it's not accepted (either a message "connection time out", or no message at all, the screen to type the password keeps coming back).
With my other devices (pc's, iPad, iPhone), there are NO connection problems.
With my iMac I still can use my neighbour's internet, and I can use my own internet, when I swith off the WEP-key of the router.
So the problem is that my key is not accepted by the iMac (and I'm sure that I type the correct password; I choose "show password").
As already mentionned, the first month I could go on the internet (the key was accepted).

    Jim:
Thanks for your comments. I think you may be right. I have more information now. I installed a later version of the C4500 package (to fix another problem where the PC Firewall and internet access was disabled for 3 mins at startup), and the network setup/diagnostics are different in the newer package. After installing this the first time, everything worked - I mean everything, even scan from printer. During the Network Setup the wizard found only one network (mine). However, the Wireless Network Report said it had detected two.
However, the next time I switched the printer on, it never connected. Network diagnostics then told me that the PC and the printer were on different networks, 192.168.0.0 and 169.254.0.0 and that this usually results from two close networks with the default router manufactures SSID. This is not the case here - I am in any case in a very isolated country farm!  It also (predictably) said the WEP was wrong. At one point in the diagnostic I can see it's trying 169.254.196.213.  There's nothing on my network other than 192.168.0.*  Attempts to reconfigure the network again show that there is only one network detected on-air, and no duplicate SSIDs, but the same result in the diagnostic - crossed-networks. Even re-installing the software won't fix it now. Whereas before I could at least print/scan from the PC and only the printer 'thought' the network was dead, now the network really IS dead and I am left with a USB-only setup.
I think you may be right that the printer somehow 'remembers' a phantom/ghost network. What I need is some way to hard-reset the printer. I saw in other postings that you know something about this, at least on other printers. Alternatively, I need a way to set the printer network parameters, including hard-coded IP address, over the USB but WITHOUT the router radio on, then switch it on and let the HP network setup wizard find it over the radio. Any ideas on that one please?

  • How do i get my Ipad 1 to ask for a wep key insted of a password for wifi setup?

how do i get my Ipad 1 to ask for a wep key insted of a password for wifi setup?

"WiFi setup"?  I'm not sure I understand.  Are you trying to set up your WiFi network from an iPad?
Anyway, the answer to your question is likely this:
Go to Settings > WiFi.  Find your network.  Click the small "i" in the circle on the right of that line.  That probably has the information you are looking for (or the place to set it).

  • How do you find the wep key for the wifi?

I need the WEP key to be able to acess my wifi through my playstation. And i am unsure of which operating system to choose i know i have the most up to date one though

Is the Wi-Fi network, provided by your AirPort Extreme, configured for WEP wireless encryption? If not, and is using WPA or WPA2 instead, then the Playstation is not properly recognizing the security type.
Which exact version of the Extreme do you have?
By operating system, are you referring to the one you are running on your computer? Is so, what is the make & model of your computer?

  • N80 WiFi - WEP key doesn't save after upgr to 4.06...

Upgraded my N80 i-net version to latest firmware 4.0623.042 & since then WEP key set up in Access Point doesn't get save. I get asked for WEP Key every time I try to access WLAN. Anyone having same issues? WiFi access was working fine prior to upgrade.
    Thanks in advance

    Just an update to this
Thanks to a comment on another post I noticed I was able to start iTunes by right-clicking iTunes on the Start menu and select Run As Administrator.  This seemed to work fine, but still I could not run without doing this afterward.  Note: I'm already an administrator, and I don't fully understand the difference.
Anyway, I have decided to uninstall 10.4, reinstall 10.3, and reinstate the 10.3 library.  All works fine now, so I suspect something is not quite right in 10.4.
I should have taken the 'If its not broke, then don't upgrade it' approach. I get too complacent sometimes...

  • How can I input the required wep key to enable wifi

Trying to connect to my wifi network with my iPad, however the network needs a WEP key. iPad doesn't seem to be able to input this key, although I have it.
    Any ideas..?

The password should be printed on the router's label.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • My nintendo DS can't connect to wifi with a WEP key.

I entered the SSID and Equivalent Network Password into my Nintendo DS and tried connecting. All it gave me was "Unable to connect to an access point". I only have this problem when my WEP key is on. It works without security, but I don't want to get rid of it.
    Anyone else have this problem?

I have the newer Airport Extreme and have the same problem connecting with the DS. I have WEP security enabled. Does your wireless router (Airport Extreme) need to be set up for "b" only in order to connect with the DS? If that's even possible?
Connecting is not a problem for the Wii, PS 3 or PSP? The DS is the only one that doesn't connect wirelessly.

  • Still Having Problem With WEP Key

    Hi:
I have been reading this forum and looking for WEP related topic however I still haven't solved my problem.  So here is my problem and see if anyone from this forum can help.
I set my linksys to make WEP key mandatory.  I used 128 bit key and was able to generate 104 bit key (26 hex digits).  It works fine on my wife laptop (COMPAQ), it can communicate using this key. However it never works on my IBM/Lenovo T43P.  The only difference is I am running Funk/Juniper Odyssey Client Manager software.  Yes I have entered the 26 hex key properly and still doesn't work.  It does work however if I disable the WEP key.  Any idea what the problem is?
I took my laptop to my brothers house who is using DLINK router and use a different WEP and it works fine.  So it seems like this WEP key doesn't work with my Linksys router.  By the way my Linksys router is BEFW11S4.
    Thanks,
    Jim

If your one laptop is already working iwth same 28bits WEP key ..... i dont think so that there is any issue with router ......
You can configure the Odyssey Client Manager as per the settings in the router ....
Still if you want you can use WEP 64 bits key on the router ...check on both the laptops if they are able to access interent .....

  • How to view my WEP Key ?

I need to connect to my Airport Extreme Wireless Network from a WIndow XP configured Macbook.
WIndows requires the Hexadecimal WEP key to connect.
    How do i get this?
To be sure, i have read many similar questions on this forum and tried :
    - The network preference panel. The "show password" tick option remains grayed out.
    - The Airport utility. The "equivalent network password" on the Base Station meny remains grayed out.
    - The Keychain access utility. I can only find the alphabetic passord, not the hexadecimal WEP key (of course tried to enter the alphabetic one, but did not work, so i assume it is expecting the hexadecimal one....).
    - In one of the posts, the contributor is bemoaning about an upgrade on snow leopard that makes getting to view the WEP key absurdly complicated. He provides a link :
    http://www.adamriggins.com/2009/11/16/how-to-view-saved-wifi-passwords-in-osx-sn ow-leopard/
... which unfortunately is not working anymore...
I do clearly remember easily retrieving the WEP key 2 or 3 years ago, maybe from OS leopard at the time. I don't quite understand why it's been made so difficult now. Was there a security issue ? then is there an Apple note summarizing those facts and recommanding steps for previously set networks ?
Anyone who can help on this is very welcome.
    Thanks in advance
    YM

well first of all why are you using wep? don't you realize that all wep networks can be cracked in 15 minutes?
older versions of windows xp do not know WPA/WPA2 if you are running the latest service pack then it should support WPA or WPA2
if for the life of you cannot determine the WEP password no matter how hard you try. i found mine by going into keychain and clicked on show password and there was my wifi password
then you might as well just download the latest version of airport utility, write down all the important settings, and then use the reset button to erase everything and then reconfigure it from scratch. and then you will know your password.
while you are there, if you can turn on wpa, by all means turn it on

  • Can't set WEP key for broadcom-wl?

I did a fresh install of Arch this morning at my office. I have an Acer Aspire laptop with a Broadcom wireless card that works with broadcom-wl (I've used the driver for a long time and it works perfectly... with open or WPA networks). The network at my office is WEP. So after installing the drive, adding lib80211 and wl to my MODPROBE (and !b43 !ssb), I reboot and see my wireless as eth0.
If I try to iwconfig eth0 key XXXX-XXXX-XX or iwconfig eth0 essid WIFINAME key XXXX-XXXX-XX, no matter what combination I try, I get an error saying that it's an invalid argument for SET_ENCODE. I've check the Wiki and man pages for iwconfig, and can't seem to find any solution. Does anyone know why I can't put in a WEP key?
((Side note: everytime I've installed Arch, my wifi starts out as eth0 until I get connected and run pacman -Syu. Then I reboot and it shows up as wlan0, and my Atheros ethernet is eth0 or eth1.))

Thanks for a response. So this is a fresh-from-the-oven install. I usually get my wifi connection set up and then create my user and go about setting everything else up. Meaning I've been trying as root.
I can see the wireless network with iwlist scan and it shows up as encryption key: on. Also, I tried using each lib80211 mod or some combination thereof in my rc.conf. No dice.
Lastly, since I didn't include it before, here's the exact error I get when I try to assign a WEP key with iwconfig:
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device eth0; Invalid argument.
UPDATE: I can set the key using [x] between key and XXXXXXXXXX. However, any combination I'm trying of essid and key/enc isn't showing up in iwconfig. No errors, but my iwconfig information isn't changing. It's progress... I think.
UPDATE #2: I can iwconfig eth0 essid linksys (the office next to us) and grab that one (I don't know their password ) and it updates iwconfig, but our own network doesn't update iwconfig when I run iwconfig essid. >.<

  • WVC54GCA setup won't take WEP key

Hi - I'm setting up this Linksys WVC54GCA Wireless-G Monitoring Camera and can't get it to take my WEP settings. The setup screen says, after you select 128 bit WEP, to leave the passphrase field empty and enter the WEP key on the next screen. When you hit enter you get an error saying that the WEP key should be 26 digits and and you cannot continue!
If I turn WEP off and do it without security it all works fine, so how am I supposed toenter the WEP key? Seem like a bug. Endless loop!

Hey just had the same problem as you and found the way around it.  It looks like the Wizard has a bug in it that you have to use the Pass phrase not the pass key.
The way around it is to use the web interface, use the IP address that has been assigned to the camera as the web address in your browser, you can see this in the wizard or on your wireless router.
all the settings to manage the wifi can be found there, you need to use that area to manage everything else for the camera anyway.
You may need to reset the camera, there is a little button under the camera, use a pen and hold it in for a slow count of 10.
