WiFi Dropping On and Off

I got my 3g iPhone over the weekend, and have had trouble staying connected to WiFi networks. I've tested on three different WiFi networks and had the same results:
1. iPhone takes awhile (maybe a minute or so) to find the network in order to sign on initially.
2. iPhone often does not show full strength on the WiFi signal indicator, even when I am within 5-10 feet of the wireless router, with nothing between iPhone and router.
3. iPhone will lose WiFi connection within 1-3 minutes, and periodically pick it up again, dropping on and off with no perceivable rhyme or reason. This happens at very close distances to the router, and farther away (25-50ft.), and it happens without moving the iPhone...sitting on a table or desk, it will just drop WiFi and pick it up.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

No. The devices described in the article above can still cause interference.
Is there any chance this is an iPhone hardware issue? If so, what are my potential remedies, given that I >bought it less >than a week ago? It seems unlikely to me, but I hate beating my head against the wall >unnecessarily.
This does not sound like a hardware issue with the iPhone but, if you believe it is, you can make a reservation to see a Mac Genius. The Mac Genius can take a look at the iPhone and test it with the open Wi-Fi network at the Apple retail store.

I recommend restoring the iPhone to rule out software issues.

Make sure the wireless router has the latest firmware updates available. Also, try to hard reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

  • My wifi go on and off what can i do and i already restored it can someone help me??

can someone help me the WiFi comes on and off every five min. it started this yesterday night i had it for 5 weeks

Even though it's working right now with one device doesn't mean there may be an issue with another device.
Resetting the router also changes wireless channels if there are other wireless routers running on the same channel and reduce interference.

  • AirPort Express Base Station signal drops on and off

My Airport Express Base Station signal drops on and off about every 2 minutes. It’s quite frustrating. I currently have a Windows XP PC, with a Linksys Wireless Router. I’ve taken several steps as prescribed in the support chats to no avail. I’ve switched channels, updated software/firmware (iTunes, Base Station and my Router), reconfigured my security settings to no security back to my regular security settings, I’ve placed the base station right next to my router in case it was due to interference, I’ve used headphones in the event it was my stereo, I’ve changed different utility settings (interference robustness, stream size, etc). I’ve opted to use the option “Create a Wireless Network” versus “Existing Wireless Network” and back to “Existing Wireless Network”. Again, all to no avail. Can someone offer some insight to help solve this problem? The problem is so annoying that I no longer use the base station.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rene

Maybe Windows is trying to get an 802.1x authentication which should be disabled:
Ensure that the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network check box is not checked.

It seems updating Windows XP to Service Pack 2 fixes that.

  • IPhone 4S wifi goes on and off repeatedly on it's own/other apple products doing the same

Okay so I have WiFi problems and I can't seem to find anybody with the same problem as me. I've read many WiFi problems with iOS 6 on Apple Discussion Forums and also Googled it and none of the problems I've seen fit my category.
Infact, my problem is not only with iOS 6 and iPhone. I also have the same problem with my MacBook (2009, OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2) and also my iPad 2 on iOS 6.0.1.
I know it's not my WiFi, as there are also 3 Windows computers that work perfectly fine on it and I have tinkered with the wifi and all three of the Apple devices.
Here is the problem: I can connect to WiFi but the WiFi constantly 'flutters'. It goes on and off continuously. (The actual wifi option doesnt go off, the wifi bars disappear and reappear constantly) I do seem to get WiFi at other people's houses but not all.
Note it's not just cosmetic, it actually stops my connection. Also, I've not updated to iOS 6.0.1 on my iPhone, I see no reason to at this point. It didn't fix the problem on the iPad and there are no WiFi fixes for the iPhone 4S in the iOS notes.
This is something that I've dealt with since iOS 6 arrived. It's very aggrivating.
Other problem: This one involves my MacBook and not my iOS devices. My MacBook doesn't seem to like certain WiFi connection either. (Including my home networks) It will connect to most open networks with no security options set, but does not connect to WPA2 Networks. It says "Could not join "NetWorkName" A connection time out occured." Also used Network Utility & Wifi Diagnostics, both useless to me for this problem. But the WiFi Scanner in Network Utility did show me that my home networks are infact working. Just that this particular computer wont connect to it (Unlike every other computer in the house)
If anyone else is having this issue or has insight on the issue please let me know and if you have a fix or an idea of what might fix it, I'll give it a try, if I can and if I haven't already attempted it.

Lol you're going to love this... the one reason I wouldn't upgrade iOS on my iPhone was the exact thing that was holding my wifi back? I just feel stubborn now. Anyway. Thank you brandon, for atleast attempting to help.
UPDATE: After a while of hard headedness, I updated to iOS 6.0.1 and my wifi on my iPhone is working like a charm.
Weirdly, I'm not sure it was the iOS update that changed things, as my MacBook is actually connecting perfectly aswell?
Still no clue with the iPad. But no biggy. This is a huge change and one that I can definitely cope with.
(Now watch it just be my router making me look like a fool.) Because I also restarted it about an hour ago. (Which I have done numerous times in the past months.)
So I don't know what's going on but whatever it is, I'm happy with it right now. I will hope that it doesn't break down again after I post this.
For anyone that might run into this problem later on, update your phone. >.< New lesson learnt.

  • TIP: wifi dropping? turn off auto brightness

If your wifi is dropping and causing you to have to turn wifi on/off to reestablish a connection, check your brightness setting.  Especially if you set your brightness very low, turn OFF autobrightness.  Apparemtly the brightness level is somehow related to the iPad maintaining a wifi connection.  Probably something with power levels.
iPad 1, wifi model, 4.2.1 firmware, verizon fios router.

Hi there.. we are having the same issue.  iPads, iPods all keep dropping off wifi.  We use the TimeCapsule and a bunch of airport express to extend and provide music to different locations in the house.  All very cool until the devices (recently) just started randomly dropping off wifi (including the apple TV unit we have).
All units have the latest firmware.
I have a juniper router, so are there network settings I should change on that to make sure it is not part of the problem? Something "apple" to enable?

  • Wifi goes on and off, backlit keyboard doesn't work and no sound since Lion  upgrade. I can get the wifi back by going into safe mode and re booting(someone suggested on here), but can't let computer die or turn off or have to do it again.

My Wifi connection goes off if computer dies or shuts off, I can only make it work if I go into safe mode and reboot, it was just that, but now my keyboard doesn't light up like it's supposed to in low or no light and in system preferences it's like it doesn't exist.  Also, the sound doesn't work, I can't turn it up or down, it shows the sound icon grayed out and the anti symbol when I push F11 and F12, also it's like it doesn't exist in system preferences either. I have never had any problems with my MB Pro, I purchased in Feb. 2010. , but I upgraded to Lion last month, I haven't been using my laptop as much since I had an Ipad I given to me, so I think that's why I didn't notice these issues right away. What do I do? HELP!! Do I take it to Apple? I don't have the Apple care warranty, so will it be expensive for them to fix? Can I get my money back for Lion if I restore to Snow Leopard?

Take it to an Apple store or AASP. How much it will cost will depend on their determination of the problems. To bad you didn't purchase extended AppleCare. No you don't get your money back for purchasing Lion.

  • Vista Ultimate WiFi dropping frequently and causing BSODs

Hey guys, I have vista Ultimate SP1 installed on my iMac via bootcamp, when I am not using the network heavily, the network will disconnect every hour, when I try to copy files from time capsule, it drops out every 5-10 minutes, this really isn't helpful when I'm trying to transfer 30+ gigs of data, as I keep having to restart it Also I get the odd BSOD which I think relates to this.
    All help is appreciated, thanks

Not all routers and modems work well with Windows 7/Vista.
See if there is firmware for your network equipment.
Upgrade to Win7, much better WiFi and networking.

  • IPod Wifi switching on and off

I am able to connect to my home network perfectly however a few days ago, the device started acting strange. Every 5-10 seconds, the wi-fi switches on and in 3-4 seconds, comes back on. This is extremely annoying as whenever I'm doing something online, I have to start all over... Help?

Try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.
There's more to try but let's go a bit at a time.

  • Quickly turning Wifi transmission on and off

Is there a simple and quick way to enable and disable the Airport Express transmission? The background to the question is my (perhaps paranoid) concern with unnecessary radio waves next to my head... I know you can reduce signal strength to 10% via Utility, but I am looking for something a bit quicker. If I simply turn off my cable modem, will the AX transmission also automatically stop? Or do I really just have to unplug the AX when I am not using it? If so, will that daily action ultimately risk breaking the device? Thanks!

Is there a simple and quick way to enable and disable the Airport Express transmission?
You might consider unplugging the AirPort Express. The other and much better option is turn off the wireless, but this will take 5-6 clicks on your mouse. Post back if you want details.
If I simply turn off my cable modem, will the AX transmission also automatically stop?
The AirPort Express will continue to broadcast radio signals if you do this. You just won't be able to connect to the Internet.
If so, will that daily action ultimately risk breaking the device?
My opinion here. The more you unplug a device and then plug it back in, the more stress you place on the device. The reason for this is that there is a sudden rush of current when the device powers back up. This can be avoided by keeping the device plugged in. Keeping the device on will prolong the life of the device.
You'll have to weigh your priorities to decide on your best course of action.
The background to the question is my (perhaps paranoid) concern with unnecessary radio waves next to my head...
You probably already have your mind made up on this subject, so mentioning that we are all constantly being bombarded with signals from regular radio transmissions, televisions, cordless phones, microwave towers, satellite transmissions and multiple other signals probably won't make you feel any better about the Airport Express...or, the computer in front of you.
If you got an AirPort Extreme, you could turn the wireless off and connect to your computer with an ethernet cable and not use wireless at all. There is of course, always some radiation being emitted from the computer in front of you, so you'll have to take that into consideration as well.

  • HT204409 wifi on 3gs drop in and out why?

why does my wifi drop in and out on my 3gs ?

    Power cycle the Wi-Fi router.
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    Does the issue still occur?
If so, try a restore as new.
If it still continues, you may have a hardware issue.  Take it to Apple for evaluation.

  • Airport extreme time capsule. Wifi dropping

I have an airport base time capsule 3rd generation with 2 airport express as range extenders. Up until recently the network worked very well. Lately the wifi keeps dropping. One moment I'll be on wifi, the next ill be on 3G, then back again. My apple tv keeps dropping on and off as well. It's been my experience with other routers that they have a somewhat limited life. I'm wondering if it's time to upgrade to the 5th generation. Since the time capsule feature works fine, can I still use that as the backup while getting a new base? By the way, all software and firmware has been updated

It says you have the wrong password.
WPA handshake failed with STA 10:68:3f:46:d2:69 likely due to bad password from client
Reset the TC to factory and start again.
But do not be surprised if the v5 utility no longer works to do the setup.

  • Wifi drops in Windows XP SP2

Hello. I partitioned my Macbook pro with boot camp and installed Windows SP2 on the partition. I then upgraded to SP3 almost immediately.
I began to notice that my wifi internet would drop after awhile. I would have to tell it to reconnect quite frequently. Thinking that perhaps SP3 was the source of the problem, I uninstalled it. However, the wifi drops persist and I don't know where to go next. Any suggestions?
My audio is also troublesome (it stutters for a couple seconds randomly), but one problem at a time.
    Thank you.

I have this exact same problem. Anybody know of a solution?

  • What to do if the Wi-Fi Keeps turning on and off.?

my wifi turns on and off when ever it wants to , and advice.?

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order
