Wifi Drops on new laptop introduced to home network

All, long time reader, first time poster.  I have been a fios customer for years and have learned my way around the ways and means of mainting the router and laptops.  I recently introduced a new laptop (windows 7) to the house.  It worked fine for about a day or two then the wifi network kept dropping.  I did the ipconfig and it it would show an ip addresss as it was trying to reconnect but then when it had no connection, no ip address existed (Note, this laptop works on my work wifi and hotel wifi's with no issue.  It only seems to be a problem with my home fios router (Verizon MI424WRI Router).  It is fairly new as well, probaly 2 months.
When I log onto the router and go under the IP address distribution it shows the IP address as expired.  I called tech support and they noted something on the laptop was blocking the device.  I unstalled McaFee and no dice it kept dropping the wifi connection.
Next I reloaded the OS and it worked for a day or so then the same issue reared its ugly head again.  Today, the only thing i noticed was I turned on the wifi of my phone (note, when this issue started happening when the machine was first introduced to the house about 4 weeks ago i thought i noticed the same pattern - new kid comes in the house, activates itouch and my laptop loses wifi)
the only think of note i see in the event viewer is "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0xD4BED960A4A4.  The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server."  This occurs a few minutes before the wifi is dropped but am not sure the two can be related.
Verizon support keeps saying its the machine.  I did restart the router MANY times (disconnect coax and power cable) and boot up the laptop in safe mode with netwokring and the issue still occurs so I am struggling with the issue.  Interestingly enough the one thing it did try was to boot the machine with a USB on Ubuntu and the wireless works fine (tested for a few hours and no drops).  I then booted the machine back up in windows and the same issue occurs.
Chicken or the Egg:
Chicken:  Is the IP address on the verizon router keep expiring (same address is assigned everytime (192.168.1.9)
and causes laptop to drop and not reconnect to laptop
Egg:  Something on the machine causes the disconnect and then causes the P address on the verizon router keep expiring.
Egg 2:  Does a new device getting introduced into the home wifi causes my laptop to stop working?
Mcafee is no longer running.  Uninstalled Windows Defender.  Booted in Safe Mode with Networking.  None of the above works.  Hard wiring does, but not wifi.

Since it seems to work fine in Linux and not in Windows, I would start considering some deeper OS-running services that could be causing issues. For example, the drivers being used for the WLAN card could be causing some grief. Settings such as Roaming Tendency, "Fat Channel Intolerance" and Frequency Width can cause association issues. On that topic, outdated drivers, especially with the newer Wireless N chipsets can cause some problems too. When you update the network driver, I would suggest getting it from the chipset maker's website. For example, if it's Intel, get it from Intel's driver website rather than the computer maker's website, which may list old drivers for your model.
Also, see if disabling IPv6 and HomeGroups in Windows helps any. Windows comes default with IPv6 on which could be causing issues due to the way it has to establish link-local addresses. I've not heard of this causing too many issues with the FiOS routers but in the past it did with the Gen1 series on old firmware. Linux often has IPv6 disabled by default, depending on the distribution of course. In Ubuntu, it is shut off by default.

  • WiFi dropping on new ipad2

Just bought it yesterday and so far really disappointed with wifi dropping out after 15 seconds! reset network settings, upgraded to latest ios and even when i get it showing it goes as soon as I open an app! been an apple user for 18 years and thisis the first apple product that doesent make me feel like a kid at christmas, please help restor my faith and get it working?

My iPad2 after lates iOS 7.1 update was dropping wifi every 15 sec or so. Same issue on my AppleTv. At the same time iPad Air was firmly connected on the same wifi network and so was my iPhone 4S. The only thing that solved it once and for all was changing my router to security WPA/WPA2 and AES/TKIP. To do this, open your Internet browser on a computer and visit the router's configuration page. If the router uses WEP security, switch to WPA or WPA2. And bingo!

Why can't I use my new iphone5 on my home network in MacOS 10.7.5 and where do I apply for a refund for my phone?

If you want a refund, take it back where you bought it.
As for the rest of your question, until you give us something resembling useful information, like what EXACTLY the problem is, and what error message(s) you're getting, we can't even begin to guess.

  • I have a new pc, and when updating ipad software it will erase all apps etc, is there any way to stop this from happening and make my new laptop my ipads "home" pc???

I have a new laptop, and have copied over my existing itunes libary, but when i connect my ipad, and go to update the software to the new version it warns me that it will wipe all my apps etc..... How can i stop this from happening and make my new laptop the "home" for my ipad??
    Any help gratefully received! :-)

Macs use an application called Migration Assistant to copy material from the old Mac to the new one. The macs are connected together and each runs Migration Assistance and the user chooses what stuf to copy onto the new Mac.
Unfortunately I do not know how to do this between pcs or between a Mac and a Pf or even if it's even possible.

  • Trouble connecting new Windows 8.1 Laptop to Bigpond home network

We have just purchased a brand new HP laptop.  It's a mid range machine, 750 gig HDD, 8 gig ram, Intel Core i5 etc running Windows 8.1.  When going through the inital set up procedures after taking it out of the box we can't get it to log on to our Bigpond wireless home network.   You can easily search for and locate our SSID amongst other weaker signals in the neighbourhood.  Upon selecting our network the machine asks for the WPA which we enter exactly as it appears on the Bigpond card - capitals for the letters and no spaces between the characters.  The machine then attempts to connect before returning with an error message of 'cannot connect to network' or similar.  We have quite a number of other devices connected to our wireless network including smart phones, other laptops running windows 7 (and even XP), Ipods, Ipads, Playstation 3, a ethernet connected desk top etc etc.  None of these other devices ever gave trouble when initially trying to connect them to our home network.  It was always just enter the SSID and then the WPA and away you go.  I have rebooted the modem and even done a full reset on it where you have to enter all user names and passwords etc from scratch but to no avail.  I thinking there is maybe some glitch in our new laptop's operating system either inherent with windows 8.1 or a fault with our particular machine.  Any suggestions would be gladly welcomed.

Good morning. The Windows 8.1 bug raises it's ugly head again. There is an issue with windows 8.1 that is being worked on at the moment by Telstra/Microsoft to get this problem sorted out, in the meantime try this work-around: Change DNS settings to Google DNS in Windows on your Windows 8.1 laptop - Open Control Panel  - Click Network and Internet  - Network and Sharing Center  - Click Change Adapter Settings.- right click over the network connection and click on Properties Ethernet connection = Local Area ConnectionwiFi connection = Wireless Network Connection  - Select the Networking tab- click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then click on the Properties button- click on Advanced and select the DNS tab.  If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and delete them.   - Click OK. For Google Public DNS, select Use the following DNS server addresses below :- Preferred DNS server  : 8.8.8.8 Alternate DNS server  : 8.8.4.4

  • How to add a new printer and laptop to my home network

Greetings, Need tech help. I have 2 issues going on.
First I am trying to add a 2nd Printer to my home network. I was given an HP 4050N printer. I want to add it to my home network. My main printer is an HP Photosmart 8450. It is attached to my desktop thro a Belkin USB 4 port switch and then to my Desktop PC via a USB port.  THe HP 4050N has both parrallel and serial connectors...no USB ports.  WHat is the recommended method to hook up. I also have an actiontec wireless router.  Initially I had 2 separate desktop units talking to my main printer, but noe the second desktop has it's own printer.
Second, I recently acquired an HP Elite Book 2540P laptop. I got it to power make my SOlidworks and Autocad software portable.  I would like to add this to my home network but dont know if wireless of serial hookup is the best way to go.
I hope this makes sense.  I am open to reconfiguring everything if it makes sense.  My internet and TV are driven through the Action-tec router.
    I would appreciate some guidance.

  • Adding new Computer to my Home Network and I have a WRT54GS .V5 Router

I have a existing home network connecting a HP laptop and a Dell desktop and all is well. Now however I bought a new Lenovo laptop with the Vista OS with SP1 and I would like to connect it to my home existing home network. I know this might be a rather simple question BUT I am not great with networks and I set up my home network years ago and I draw a blank on how I did it. There is one CD I found that I marked with the words Remote Linksys Install on it and there is one file on it named NetSetClient. Not sure why I kept it and I do not remember what it does but might help in getting my solution.
    Please help the network novice

As your linksys router is configured and its working on 2 other computers perfectly fine, so you dont have to run the CD again on your new computer. Is your new computer is a Wireless computer, So on your New computer, in the system tray, Right click on Two computer Icon and select "Connect to a Network".. selecte your Wireless network... type in your security key and click on Connect. After this try going online.
If you new computer is a Wired computer, Just plug in the cable from your New computer to the Router and you will be able to go Online.

  • E2500 randomly drops internet connection but not the home network.

I have an E2500 with the latest firmware upgrade (1.0.03). My configuration is simple, I have a fixed IP from my ISP with fixed DNS servers. I have one computer connected via cable and one connected via wireless and a laptop that gets connected on occasion wirelessly as well. I also have an android phone that I sometimes have the networking turned on and sometimes not. That doesn't seem to be affecting the router either as I've lost connections under both circumstances. The only thing I have different is I clone the MAC address as the ISP has my IP linked to my old Linksys MAC.
The problem is I randomly lose connection to the internet, the home network is still up it's just the internet goes down. I could be on the computer or not, sometimes while browsing sometimes after I browse for a while sometimes before I get started. Fortunately its not happened during one of my online games but it has happened just after I log off the game. It usually happens a couple of times a day.
My fix has been to simply log into the router via html and on the status screen click the reboot button, then the ok, then the continue (I know it by heart). I wait 30 seconds or so and bingo I have my internet back. It's a pain that I'd like to get fixed.
    Any ideas?
    JB

There might be some settings required in the router so that it gets the proper solution. If you are facing the concern of getting lag, dropped connections then you can try the following steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] On that same setup page reduce the MTU value to 1400 from Auto
4] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed,
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161...
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.

  • Printing on a shared printer from our new iPad on our home network

How can I send a print job to a shared printer on our home network?  The iPad uses this network's WiFi capability.

It depends on the printer. iOS devices can only print directly to AirPrint printers. All AirPrint printers are wireless but not all wireless printers are capable of using AirPrint.
To print directly from an iPad / iPhone you will need an AirPrint compatible printer or another device to act as a print server. That can be a Mac computer running Printopia ($19.95 with free trial) or handyPrint (donation - supported). The Mac must be "on" but may be asleep for them to work. Equivalent PC options may exist but you're on your own finding them.
You can also buy this standalone print server:
    http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/xprintserver/xprintserver.html
These options enable you to use any printer available to your network, even older ones that may predate AirPrint by decades.
Otherwise you will need to buy an AirPrint printer or multifunction device.

  • I just accidentally dropped my new laptop from 3 feet

    i have pavilion dv6 3050
There was no physical apparent damage and i tried to run a game one after another to be sure till i found a strange appearance at Metro 2033, it has thin black lines on screen even at main menu
i tried to reinstall it but the same
then i changed the vid settings from directx11 to directx10, now it's working!
when i go back to dx11 i get that stupid lines again
the game was running well at the same settings with dx11 but after it was dropped i do not know what happened
    sorry for my english

You may have loosened the cable between the LCD and the motherboard. It's not that hard to go in and remove and reconnect, but the steps to do so are beyond me for this specific laptop.
    1 of 2 other things may have happened;
the drop may have fractured a solder joint somewhere on the motherboard, and it's losing just enough voltage that the GPU isn't able to process the DX11 instructions where DX10 is just enough less intensive to work.
you may have slightly fractured the LCD itself, and the lines show up in DX11 mode because of the increased detail.
I would run a battery of tests on the machine, including GPU and CPU performance, and stress testing, memory testing, and a dead pixel test (5 single color images viewed in full screen: #000000, #FFFFFF, #FF0000, #00FF00, and #0000FF - pure black, pure white, pure blue, pure green and pure red. )
memtest86+ is a common memory tester, not sure what is usable for CPU and GPU testing these days though.
    Hope this helps!

  • New Setup for a Home Network

    Hi Everyone,
I just built a new house and am trying to get all my equipment working correctly.  Here's what I currently have:
I have a high speed docsys cable modem for comcast.
I have an SLM 2024 24-port gigabit switch
I have a WRT610N Wirless router that I want to use as a WAP
I'm missing a router and am open to suggestions
I have structured wiring throughout the house and my house consists of the following:
    Downstairs - Kitchen (1-port)
    Downstairs - Study (1-port)
Downstairs - Great Room (1-port for media access to blu-ray)
    Upstairs - Bedroom 1 (1-port currently unused)
    Upstairs - Bedroom 2 (1-port currently unused)
Upstairs - Master Bedroom (1-port for media access to blu-ray)
    Upstairs - Entertainment Room (4 - ports // 2 (Computers), 1 (Wireless-N router), (1-port used for media access to xbox-360))
4-additional ports will be used for multi-media (currently not designated)
So, I have a total of 10-14 ports throughout the house that will be used.
In the basement, all of the structured wiring leads down to a can and a 24-port patch panel.  The cable modem is plugged in to a whip and will be plugged into a router (need help on which router I should use).  The router will be plugged into the SLM2024 switch.  The SLM2024 switch feeds the patch panel in the Can.  The WRT610n is upstairs on one of the ports that is fed into the SLM2024.
I also have a multi-media server that I'm probably going to place in the basement which has 4-terabytes of space for media storage and sharing.  It also acts as a simple home server.
So, my questions are how am I connecting and setting things up so that I'm efficient with my usage?  I already have one vlan (vlan 1) but haven't created any others.  Can anyone assist me with what router I should get and how I should connect my network up efficiently?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    I've attached 5 pictures.
    Board View:
This is the overall 8x4 board where I've placed the can and the SLM switch.  The little box in front is a small acer media server (4 terabytes) which I use for storing media, pictures, etc.
    Switch:
This is the SLM 2024 - 24 port Gigabit Switch.  It's very quiet and works well with everything.
    Can:
A basic can that I setup which has the patch panel at the top of the can, my modem and router in the bottom along with a small surge strip.  I may change out the surge strip later on, but for now - this works fine.
    Modem - Router:
The bottom box is the Docsys 3 modem from motorola.  You need docsys 3 to really take advantage of the high speed download packages a cable provider gives you.  I purchased my own to cut down on the monthly lease charge and made it simpler.
The top box is the 8-port gigabit router which I use for managing DHCP routing, NAT, and the firewall.
The modem connects to the router and the router feeds down through the bottom of the can and into the switch.
    Patch Panel:
The patch panel basically is divided into three color schemes that I created.  The blue cables are for voice; the green cables are for data; and the black cables are for cable.
The original patch cables that I had purchased with the can were not very good.  They were rated fine but they were too thin.  So, I used thicker coaxial cable so that no degradation occurs.  Because of the thickness, I ended up having to bow tie the cables in a medium loop.  Again, it works very well.
    Summary:
    I hope the pictures help.
The only thing I didn't post (due to the 5-pic limit) was a picture of my WRT-610N Wireless router.  It sits upstairs in the entertainment room and is plugged into a direct wall data jack.  The broadcast range is huge.  I currently have zero issues with any ports or wireless access in the house.
I also just finished working out the video pieces as well for the multimedia in the house.  It all ties into everything as well.  I used velcro straps for cable ties on my lines and black ties for the cabling that belongs to the static video equipment (which is not posted).  For the video equipment and sound equipment I actually have a universal remote that's tied into a command center and receiver which allows me to turn on any device in the house (TVs, Cable, Ipod, XM Satellite, Xbox 360, etc.  I can go to watch or listen mode and decide which room I want to use, which device to turn on and then the universal remote becomes the master.  I tied my computers into the command center so I can use any computer in any location and view it on the 63-inch plasma TV in the great room and utilize it with a bluetooth setup.
There's still a lot more work to be done but it's getting there.
