  • How do I use my Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook Pro running 10.4.

I just installed a Time Capsule. I've extended the range with two Airport Expresses. I've connected my MacBook running 10.6.3 to the wireless network. I've connected my wife's MacBook Pro running 10.4.11 to it. I've connected my wife's 3G iPhone to it and my first gen iPhone to it and our Apple TV to it. All devices can connect to the internet. I've connected the Time Capsule to the printer and printed wirelessly from both computers.
I've backed up my MacBook and seen that the Time Machine is backing up my MacBook as it should.
How do use the Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook Pro running 10.4.11? I've tried connecting them via ethernet cable and via USB cable. In both cases the Time Capsule failed to show up as an external drive and wasn't seen by the 10.4.11 back up utility.
How do people do this? (Other than convincing their wives to let them upgrade their MacBook Pro to 10.6.3?)

That really is your best option. Sooner or later, you're going to have a problem with the "other" data on your Time Capsule, since the backups of your Mac will, eventually, fill up all the available empty space. That will, of course, limit the space available for the other backups.
There's a very cumbersome workaround in the blue box of #Q3 of the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Another is to connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, partition it if desired, and back up one Mac to it and the other to the TC's internal drive.

  • New MacBook (Aluminum), new Time Capsule (Dual-Band), backups not working

My Mom got a new (refurbished) 13.3" MacBook (Aluminum) and new (not refurbished) Time Capsule 500 GB (Dual-Band.) The Time Capsule is working great for wireless internet and we can copy files to and from it, but Time Machine backups are not working. I enabled Time Machine, selected her TC, and then when it tries to backup it sits at the preparing stage for a little while and then gives a very unhelpful "the backup failed" message. Unfortunately I don't have the exact error message, but it never gets out of the preparing phase. It doesn't stay in preparing forever, it only stays there for a minute or so before it gives up and reports the backup failed message and stops. It's unclear to me, searching these forums, if this problem is the same as others are reporting.
I've tried turning off Time Machine and back on, removing and reselecting the Time Capsule, etc. Nothing makes a difference. There are no backup files on the TC - it's brand new.
This happened out of the box, but I also tried installing the latest Time Capsule firmware. It didn't help.

Apple needs to create a configuration tool that configures all the Apple devices one owns by creating a network diagram using drag and drop symbols...
Sounds like a cool suggestion. If you want Apple to hear it, go to www.apple.com/feedback/timecapsule.html

  • WiFi Fails

    Hello,
I have a Macbook pro with all updates installed. But for some strange reason the WiFi connections always fails after some time (not even in a logical time periode, like every 30 minutes or so. It just happens randomly).
I recently installed bootcamp to use windows XP Pro (I know, I know....)and the problem does not happen there. It just works.
ps. It allready happend before the XP installation.
    please help me

    Update
The above behavior only occurs when I use a HDMI to DVI cable.   It doesn't work when its a straight HDMI to HDMI cable.
    Crazy..
I'm going to consider the "wifi fails when hdmi is attached" matter closed.

  • Apacer Ram on macbook aluminum

My computer was behaving weird after I upgraded the computer with Samsung RAM. I want to change them and I have a good proposition to exchange the Samsung RAM sticks with Apacer headspreader RAM sticks. So I wanted to know if some people are using them and how they behave on the macbook aluminum before I go to do the exchange in the vendor shop.

What was your Mac doing with the added RAM?
Keep in mind Samsung has a lifetime guarantee, I believe.
Personally, I like to go with high quality, Mac friendly RAM. No bargain stuff. The original Samsung RAM failed in my MacPro after 2 years so I'm not a fan of that brand. And Apacer is not what I would call Mac friendly at all.
I feel Crucial RAM is the way to go. I have it in all three of My Macs, one of which has been running Crucial for 8 years now with no issues. It's a little higher priced, then some brands, but worth it and has a lifetime guarantee.
Crucial has a system tester that figures out exactly what RAM you need.

  • Can I use a copy of Leopard I no longer use to update my wife's MacBook?

    Hi,
My PowerBook G4 died and is a goner. Before it died I bought a copy of Leopard and upgraded the G4 to 10.5.
I'm wondering if I can now load those Leopard disks onto my wife's MacBook 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (she's still on 10.4). Since I'm not using the G4 anymore, can I install this on my wife's MacBook without a problem? My fear is once I install 10.5 on her machine she'll be asked to register and Apple will give her trouble since it's registered with another computer.
Eventually, I'd like to upgrade her to 10.6 Snow Leopard and want to make sure I won't run into trouble then either.
    Thanks

Not to worry - Apple won't even know. Apple uses the honor system, and does not use a key or serial number to link a retail OS X DVD to a particular machine.

  • Can I back up to Time Machine from hard drive of failed Macbook?

My Macbook has just completely failed (I think an issue with power supply).
I had a bulging battery and have a new Macbook Pro on the way, but as I live in a very remote area this is taking a while. So, one day, my Macbook just wouldn't start again.
I hadn't backed up to Time Machine for about a week and would really like to get all the missing data. When the new computer arrives I'm planning to use Migration Assistant to migrate all my data from Time Machine.
So, my question is, is it possible to back up to Time Machine from the hard drive of my dead Macbook? I was thinking either cloning it somehow, or making a disk image and booting it from another Macbook, but this is stretching the limits of my limited IT skills. I don't want to interfere with the other Macbook I'm using or inadvertently wipe the data on the hard drive or Time Machine disk.
    Any advice much appreciated!
My Macbook ran Snow Leopard and was up to date with software updates as of two days ago. It was purchased about two years ago, but I think it's manufacture date was about March 2008.

    Thanks Noondaywitch and Pondini!
The HD of the failed Macbook turned out to be fine. Just to be safe I did a full functional back-up of my Time Machine disk to another external disk as well as cloning my Macbook hard drive using Carbon Cloner to another partition of the external disk.
I then booted from a friend's Macbook and did an incremental Time Machine backup from the original Macbook HD to the original TM backup (making sure I excluded the host computer's hard drive from the backup!); when I did the backup it asked whether I wanted to "Reuse backup" I clicked yes.
As said, the hard drive was fine, but at setup I needed an ethernet or firewire connection, which I didn't have on the enclosure, so I migrated my data to the new Macbook Pro using the original TM backup. Strangely, the backup said it was transferring only 120GB, whereas the HD had 150GB of used space. Redundant files, etc. perhaps? Anyway, it's just transferring now, so will sit back and read the paper and see what it looks like in an hour and a half!
    Thanks very much again!
Now, if anyone's got any suggestions to fix my old Macbook, which I was going to give away to impecunious friends if they bought a new battery……
HD is fine, power seems buggered, the rest, I don't know. Suggestions welcomed (I live 300+kms from the nearest service centre, so it's strictly DIY or go to local computer shop who know nothing about Macs).

  • Upgrade from 160 GB to 1 TB internal hard drive for MacBook Aluminum Late 2008?

I'm trying to upgrade my MacBook Aluminum (Not Pro) Late 2008 from 160 GB SATA Disk to 1 TB Western Digital WD10JPVT Scorpio Blue 1 TB 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive. But I wasn't sure if this would work with my laptop and if it will fit. Can anyone help me out? Here is the links about the hard drive.
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=800

It may not work if it is a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface because your model only supports SATA II 1.5 and/or 3.0 Gb/s interfaces.

  • Macbook Aluminum to VGA Output

I have a Macbook Aluminum and I am trying to output that to my TV. I have bought the miniPort to VGA adapter and hooked it up to my LCD TV with a VGA input. When this happens, I am only able to see my desktop background and nothing else. It will not show me my HD or Safari windows or mouse cursor or anything else. Anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening??

    Then it's a mini-->DVI and then DVI--HDMI/DVI-->DVI or
    mini-->VGA and then VGA-->VGA
There are also a composite and s-Video, but that's not HD.
You can get the mini cables at apple.com, an apple store and I believe Best Buy. Note that there have been some problems reported in buying mini-->DVI cables that are non Apple.
Also, whatever you get, you will need a separate cable from your headset jack-->L/R RCA plugs for the sound with all options.

  • Bluetooth on new MacBook Aluminum and all MacBooks before

I have a new Macbook Aluminum. Bluetooth frequently doesn't recognize my mouse and/or keyboard. Now that I have added a monitor the mouse and keyboard are connected but NOTHING happens on waking even though the bluetooth preferences shows it's connected, so I turn off/on bluetooth and sometimes one or the other actually works. I've had the new Macbook three weeks and bluetooth has disappeared completely four times requiring a battery out reset to get it back. Are there any fixes for a Macbook with what is obviously VISTA bluetooth?

    Hello western:
Since your Macbook is new, punt the problem to Apple. Either take it to an Apple store, or call Applecare with a warranty issue.
The intermittent nature of the problem indicates, to me, a hardware issue.

  • I have a similar question to the one Brendan posted a day or two ago. My wife's MacBook Pro will find my library for home sharing, but my ACER will not even display the home sharing icon. Home sharing on, latest version on iTunes.

I want to get some music from my wife's MacBook Pro via Home Sharing. We both have Home Sharing turned on. Her's displays the Home Sharing icon, and recognizes my library. My ACER will not display the Home Sharing icon, and I cannot access her library. I have verified I have the latest version of iTunes, I have turned Home Sharing off and on again, and still no icon.

How do i continue the icloud restore on my iphone, it has stopped when my wifi failed ?

Either it will continue on it's own after a while, once wifi is up or you may have to start it again.
Chances to continue on it's own are more if you started restore less then 48 hours ago.

  • Should I get a 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4ghz with 4gb of ram or macbook aluminum 2008 2.4ghz 4gb of ram? And which is thinner?

Hello everyone I would like to know if I should get the 2008 MacBook Pro non unibody 2.4ghz 4gb of ram or should I get a macbook aluminum unibody with the same specs? And does anyone know which is thinner?

Go with the aluminum, which is also thinner. The Late-2008 aluminum model is the oldest model MacBook capable of running the latest version of OS X (Mountain Lion).
