WiFi goes blind on 10.9 for mid 2012 MBA

Hello folks, hello experts,
this is going to be another thread with issue seen on previous versions of OS X.
I have bought a brand new in a box MacBook Air 11 a week ago, old stock however, mid 2012. It was just a day or two after 10.9 Mavericks came out, so the first thing I did was going to AppStore (over WiFi), made the FW check for the SSD, applied the Update, then (from this part over Ethernet) Upgrade from 10.7.5 to 10.8.5. Right after that Mavericks 10.9.
At home I have added my WiFi network and started to using the thing. Then following issue came out:
After waking from sleep, the WiFi is searching for networks but cannot see ANY.
What I did/tried:
All the possible old tricks (stupid or not) I could find:
- waking the MBA with power button
- keep the Bluetooth turned off
- deleted all preffered networks
- deleted Keychain entries
- moving system cofiguration files !
(- aks about others, I might have forgotten some...)
Nothing helped.
From the On/Off tricks also all possible were tried:
- Wifi
- Sign out
- Restart
- Power
Since the thing was new I had no problem to make fresh new install of 10.9 Mavericks. I did. Did not helped.
The issue is still here.
I have brought the MBA back to the shop, it went to authorized service. They have tried for one day (not sure, may be less) but they could not repeat the issue. They made Apple HW test, all OK. We agreed, when it comes back, they will try longer.
Symptoms:
- When MBA goes to sleep - seems like only the "deeper sleep" with disc unplugged - and then wakes does not see any available networks. WiFi is On and searching. Produces no error, behaves like everything is OK, just there are no networks around.
- Probably it should be not an issue of my router as the MBA does not see any network, not even the ca. 8 newtorks from my neighbours
- There is no 100% cure, the blindness seems to go away randomly. I mean, sometimes one trick helps, sometimes none (On/Off: WiFi, Sign Out, Restart, Power). I cannot tell why it then goes all right.
- My network (from which it goes to sleep) is on TP-LINK router with excellent signal, set up as not broadcasting SSID, Auto channel, WPA2, Auto bgn. I tried using also broadcasting SSID, fixed channel, fixed N.
- I cannot tell if it has a connection to a user, seems like not. There are 2: Administrator and Standard. Looks like the issue might relevant for both. I could update here.
- It does not matter if the MBA is on battery or plugged in.
- This issue never occured on any other device before (Windows PCs, Andorid devices, iPhone, MacBook 2009 - this one was not tested on my network after 10.9 update yet).
Other information:
- All possible updates for 10.9 are installed, including the one from this week.
- No accounts are connected (no mail, no cloud).
- From the installed software, there is TeamViewerQS and Skype - this one was and is not connected, Chrome web browser.
- FireWall is turned on.

Any other required information or log files could be supplied within my skills (and your navigation), just ask for them.
My personal humble opinion told/tells me follwing:
- At first I thought it was SW issue. That is why I did the clean re-install.
- Afterwards it looked like a HW problem. That is why it went to AD/S.
- Since all HW tests passed OK, I think again it could be only SW issue. The question is now, is it a WiFi firmware issue or OS X 10.9 issue ? Or both...
Any input will be welcomed and highly appreciated. Thank you all in advance !

Miaco,
I have the same issue and it behaves as you say. I did the SMC reset and it solved the provlem...
...for a few days. Now the same behavior is back :-( I did again an SMC reset and also a PRAM reset but it did not help.
I was again in contact with Apple chat and he also recommended to play with the locations, creating a new one. I haven't tested that, but will give it a try.
The next thing if this does not help, was to to make a new installation via "archive - install". I will see...but it is very annoying because under Moutain Lion everything was fine. I'm not really motivated to make a new Installation since this is very time consuming....:-(
So if I were you, give it a try to reset SMC, PRAM and play with locations...

  • Help!!! Prethunderbolt imac as a 2nd monitor for mid 2012 mac pro

Hi.  I have a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 imac (pre-thunderbolt) running 10.6.8 and I'd like to use it as a 2nd display for my new mid 2012 2.4 GHz 12 core Mac Pro running 10.8.2.
I bought a mini display to mini display port cable made by NewerTech.  Both computers are up and running.  I've connected the cable from the Mac Pro to the iMac, hit command f2 on the imac and nothing happens.
Does anyone have any idea why this isn't working?

    Hi rizal.umaternate,
I would start with resetting the SMC to see if it will start to power on again. If not then you will probably need to contact Apple for further support. Take a look at the article below to start you on troubleshooting your issue.

  • 4K Graphics Card @60Hz for Mid-2012 Mac Pro

Does anyone know which aftermarket graphics card supports 4K at 60Hz on the Mid-2012 Mac Pro? I can't seem to find one that does in any current forums.

Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition and Geforce GTX680 Mac Edition should work in your MacPro, and is able to do 3840x2160 or 4K under Mac OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
    even newer cards though.

  • Mid-2012 MBA Battery Life + High RAM Usage

    I recently purchased the lastest mid-2012 base model MBA brand new, factory sealed from eBay and started using it a few days ago. Overall its a great machine, however there were two things that were slightly bothering me;
    1) Although the battery life is decent (around 5.5- 6 hours), on the system report page (see pic 1) , it said it only had 6128 mAh of charge remaining at 99%, even though the full battery capacity was 6527 mAh. Does this mean the battery capacity has already decreased after just 3 cyles or is this normal with lithium ion batteries? However, I don't know if this matters, but the place where I'm from suffers from frequent power cuts so I had charged the computer on a sine wave inverter a couple of times (AC current line). Could this have affected it in anyway?
    2) The computer had shipped with OS X 10.8 and I upgraded to 10.8.2 the same day I started using it. While the computer doesn't feel sluggish at all (well, tbh I haven't run any heavy programs yet), even with very few of apps open, the RAM usage is very high (see pic 2)- It says I am using 2.92 GB of RAM, and have just 1.07 GB of free RAM. Is this a common problem in with ML? I was planning to install VMWare and CS6 but now I'm not too sure judging by the amount of free RAM I have atm. What should I do about it?
    Pic 1
    Pic 2
Would highly appreciate if any of you guys could help me out here. Thanks in advance !

I'm at 1.02 GB of wired RAM on a completely "naked" boot of OS X. I've got zero 3rd party apps installed or set to launch it's all core services of the OS only. Oddly enough, my 13" rMBP is at 1.18 GB off the same basic boot on 10.8.2 so it'll vary a little.
I also find that with Mt. Lion the reporting is on "tape delay" as I jokingly call it. For example when I start up an application it'll use "x" RAM and then after 5-10 minutes of just idling it'll then level out at "y" RAM. Where you have to be watchful is on 3rd party applications that will sometimes just start consuming RAM like that's it sole purpose.
On a side note, I've been fooling around with a free application on the App Store called "Memory Clean" that's suppose to take previously allocated RAM and free it up. So far so good, it's especially handy after I run a handbrake job or play some World of Warcraft where a significant amount of RAM is used. Definitely not a required application, OS X by default is quite good at freeing up and reallocating RAM but sometimes it doesn't always get the job done if you need it right now (for a VM).
In your full charge capacity photo the machine is running on battery power, although at 99%. On my MBA I get almost 280 mAh of usage between 100% and 99% that right there would close the gap considerably.
On the subject of 3rd party applications, Coconut Battery (a free 3rd party application) has a handy tool that allows you to create data points on battery health. Might be worth exploring so you have a statistical representation of the battery's health if you're interested.

  • Macbook Air mid-2012 battery life issues -- a possible culprit ?

    Hi all,
I've posted and followed a thread regarding diminished battery life for the mid-2012 MBA, when Mountain Lion was released. I never could fix the problem, was contacted by Apple but that didn't solve anything either.
The troubles I was (and still am) having with my MBA were :
Battery life reduced by at least 33% when I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, following a firmware update.
No change when I clean installed ML.
No change when I upgraded, and then clean installed Mavericks.
My battery, after 13 months of use, had its capacity reduced to 70-80%, and has now been stable for one year at 70-80% capacity. It now lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours, and has never lasted longer than 5 hours since I upgraded to ML, which was a few weeks after the laptop was purchased...
I've tried everything that was posted on the forums, SMC resets, etc. Now to the (maybe) interesting stuff.
I stumbled today on something interesting. I was researching my issue to see if people with the same laptop, that followed the same firmware upgrade path than I did had similar issues. Long story short, a forum post led me to something interesting, located at /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ACPI_SM C_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources
DISCLAIMER Whatever you do, do not try to remove / move anything in this folder.
What is interesting is that my Macbook Air has the following identifier : MacBookAir5,2. However, in the above-mentioned folder, there is no MacBookAir5_2.plist, it stops at 4_2.plist and then goes on to MBP models. Now, the question that I have is could the fact that this plist is missing be related to my battery issues ? In the sense that without this file, the kernel does not know how to properly manage the power, read the battery status / thermal sensors ?
I would really love to fix this 2-year old issue that has been plaguing my laptop ever since I purchased it.
    Cheers,
    Hadrien

Edited to add a screenshot of the plists directory.

I leave my LithiumIon battery plugged in when near an outlet.  But I use it on battery down to 40% at least once a month.
Using Coconut battery (download from macupdate.com) you see my battery is just fine after 18 months:

  • Apple TV & Mid 2012 Macbook Air 11.6'' - AirPlay not working

So I just purchased the new MBA to replace my 2010 air...which also suffers from a cracked screen. Since mirroring wont work on the old model anyways, I sold the unit and cut my loses (I was going to replace to LCD but decided it wasn't worth the effort.)
    Anyways...
I attempted to use the MBA and the mirroring function out of the box and it worked great. Sure the mouse was a little sluggish, and the audio obviously delayed (on the MBA), but synced perfectly to the TV. I watched YouTube videos, and some other flash and HTML5 embeded content. I was prompted for an update for my Apple TV 3, and today for my MBA. After updating, and restarting both units (which I have done several times since then too), mirroring does not work as it should.
When I select the TV usually it would adjust to a resolution higher than the MBA native resolution--but appropriate for the TV. Instead, the MBA screen goes blue, adjusts to the resolution, and then goes blue again, returning to a non mirroring mode.
Sometimes when I do get mirroring to work--at the MBAs standard resolution--AirPlay will be "working" despite it saying that mirroring is off and greyed out.
The biggest frustration out of all of this is that whenever I go to play a video, assuming AirPlay doesn't stop mirroring at whatever random resolution it picks (I have adjusted between a fixed and aspect appropriate setting), the AUDIO will only play through my televisions speakers, and the video will stop feeding and go back to the Apple TV home screen.
It has done this with YouTube, HBOGO, Hulu, and a number of other video streams online.
Has anyone else had this issue so far?
    To reiterate:
Using mid 2012 MBA on OSX Mountain Lion
Apple TV 3 will stream audio and mirror sometimes, but stops mirroring whenever video is played.
AirPlay icon will remain available, but will say mirroring is unavailable / greyed despite it actually "working."

    Hey thellamaPod,
Thanks for the question. The following resource provides troubleshooting information for AirPlay Mirroring in OS X. Usually, this may be caused by the firewall and a simple tweak of the settings should resolve your issue:
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
    Firewall security settings
If you use a firewall, make sure the following firewall security options have been set to allow AirPlay Mirroring to work:
    1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu ().
    2. Click Security & Privacy, then click Firewall.
    3. Click the lock icon to unlock it if it's locked, then type an administrator name and password.
    4. Click Firewall Options.
    5. Deselect (uncheck) the “Block all incoming connections” checkbox.
    6. Select (check) the “Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections” checkbox.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • MBA 13" (Mid 2012) 10.8.2 does not see other Macs

    Hello all,
for some time now I have a strange problem with my 13" MBA (Mid 2012 - latest version) on 10.8.2. THe MBA generally works very well, fast, and stable. My only issue is that I cannot see or connect to other Macs in my home WLAN network (this worked seamlessly under 10.8.1) or elsewhere. The other Macs do not show up in the finder, and neither can I connect with them manually (via "Go to server...").
The only way to establish a connection is via creating a computer to computer network - which works perfectly but, of course, disconnects me from the internet which comes over wifi, so this is not a permanent solution.
Even stranger, there seems to be a problem with ethernet connections (via thunderbolt ethernet adapter), too. This connection work seamlessly with one of my other Macs (running on Lion - 10.7), but does not work with my iMac running on Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
I guess that something's wrong with the sharing routines on my MBA. Therefore I tried to install the 10.8.2 combo update but had to learn that this was not made for the 2012 MBA... :-(
So, what to do? Should I try a reinstall of Mountain Lion?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jan

  • MBA mid-2012 Display Port Support

I have a Mid-2012 MBA 13", with the maximum configuration 8 gb + 512, running OS X 10.10.3.  I see that this CPU will not support 4K resolution but it is supposed to support WQHD at 2560 x 1440 using a Display Port monitor.  I have bought three different thunderbolt-Display Port adapters and all of them support 1080p (and audio) on two different (HP and ASUS) monitors but while the preference panel shows the resolution 2560x1440 (under "scaled") and tries to use it as "default" the whole screen gets packed into the left ~20% of the screen.  I switched all of the options on the monitor, including DP 1.1 vs. 1.2, and "pixel for pixel" (which shows the 1080p in the center of the screen).
What makes this more frustrating is I plugged in my old 11" 2011 MBA, and with the same cables etc. it is perfect, gorgeous, flawless at 2560 x 1440.
I plugged into a Thunderbolt monitor at a store and of course it works perfectly.  Does this MBA not support WQHD using a Display Port cable?  I know it won't work with HDMI either, I get the same 1080p but no options.
I upgraded to the 2012 model because the 2011 ran out of hard drive space and had recurring battery issues.  I have several work locations and I need a solution that works without investing in several $1,000 monitors.

So it gets weirder.  I tried the work-around of holding the option key when selecting "scaled" with an external display, and of course it shows lots of additional resolutions.  The native resolution 2560x1440 still shows a jumbled mess at the left side, but the next resolution says it is 2048x1152, so I tried it and VIOLÅ it seems to trick the monitor into showing its native full resolution.  The OSD on the monitor now says it is operating at the full resolution, but the Mac continues to believe it is 2048x1152.
Apple, is this a BUG or a FEATURE?

  • Coldfusion support for Server 2012

When are installers going to be made avaliable for Server 2012 for Cold Fusion?.
Adobe have offically said that installers for windows 8 are 3-5  months away as of September 22nd, 2012 but we havent heard anything about Server 2012?
Server 2012 was released to MSDN on the 4th of Sepetember. 4 Months seems a long time to wait with no word on installers or support for CF on Server 2012. Are you telling me Adobe doesnt have a MSDN account and only got access to Server 2012 at the same time as the generaly public?

Unfortunately we are all paying the price for Oracle deferring the end of life of Java 6 from November to Feb. It sounded like Adobe were going roll all this stuff into their patch to add Java 7 support to CF9 and CF10, which they would have needed to get done by Nov. However now it seems they've slacked off and have left it to the last minute. I guess the good news is that this should all be done within the next month or so. The bad news is... it won't give us much chance to test the new release between when Adobe patch CF and before the Java 6 EOL.

  • Mid 2012 i5 Fan speed

    Hi All
I'm sure this topic has come up before but from what I have read it doesn't provide me with an answer ..
My MBA does get hot depending on what it is that I am running on it, however what I have noticed is that the fan speed does not increase beyond 2008 rpm.
I have done the obiligitory SMC and PRAM reset but it still does not spin up unless I run something like SMCfancontrol.(i have even done a fresh install of 10.10.2)
Could anyone advise of a possible solution
    Thanks all
    Darrell

    Thanks
I forgot to add that its a mid 2012 MBA i5 4gb, recently had a new logic board.
I ran a diagnostic and it came up with no errors, thought it got very warm.
I tried to re install the SMC firmware but it says that it is not supported on my system (despite being the correct version).
Looks like I shall have to make an appointment for the genius bar.
    Thanks

  • Mid 2012 HDD/SSD in optibay

    Hola!
I'm finding conflicinting information on where I should put my SSD on my mid 2012 MBP with the conversion of the optibay. I currently have a Samsung 840 Series SSD @ 250 GB in the HDD bay. It's working great and has all of my boot volume and applications on it. Have been running this setup for 90 days and love how fast it is but the lack of additional storage and accessing media libraries from external drives is growing long in the tooth. I have the optibay conversion kit and am just about to get cracking on it but can't figure out the best locale for the SSD. Is it best in the HDD bay or the optibay? It's not a question of connection speed because they're both SATA III. I've heard rumors of people having issues with booting from SSD in optibay yet the lack of drop protection for a HDD in optibay is also a liability.
What's the best approach here? Any input is appreciated!

Bump. Any thoughts here on this? I've looked everywhere and can't find a solid answer for mid 2012 Macbooks.
    Thanks!

  • MBA mid-2012 does not see external display on wakeup

My mid-2012 MBA does not see external displays on wakeup. VERY annoying
I have a BenQ 24" HD display connected by HDMI and it is not seen by the Air on wakeup. I have to open the laptop, pull the mini-DV plug out 3 or 4 times before the display is recognised - some of the time. Most of the time requires a reboot with multiple cable/plug inserts.
What an absolute POS this mid-2012 MBA is! Apple finally fixed the garbage colours on external displays in 10.8.4 but the issue of recognisisng external displays remains. Its a crock. Totally regret buyiing this POS.
Have reset PRAM, SMS, cleared prefs etc etc ad nauseum. No solution with any of them. After almost a year of this garbage, the laptop is close to being thrown out as e-waste.

  • Cost of a MacbookAir Mid 2012 256GB SSD replacement (from Apple)

My Mid 2012 MBA 256GB SSD just failed, 1 week out of warranty if you believe it!. I updated my OS X, restarted and boom, gone. Bad luck I guess.
I'm wondering if anyone has had to replace this part and what the cost was? I am well aware of OWC's solution and I would prefer to avoid them - they seem dodgy and the reviews seem in total pretty negative. I'd like to stick with a legit Apple repair.
I am living in Germany, but the MBA was purchased in Australia if that changes anything.
Also, does Apple provide a warranty on the repair?

In recent days many people with a dead SSD on a 2012 MBAir have had their SSD's replaced by Apple free of charge, even though they were out of warranty.
There is a long and informative thread on failed SSD's in 2012 MBAir here:

This thread here also has some good information:

The more recent posts describe people's experiences in getting out-of-warranty repairs from Apple in numerous countries.
