WIFI hot spot for customers

I want to allow customers who enter my business internet access (like a WIFI hot spot), but I don't want them to have access to my entire network of many PC's and Macs. I only want them to be able to access the internet without passwords, but not allow them to connect to computers on the network.
Is there a way to setup Airport Extreme so this can be done?
Vincent Pickeral

One way to set that up is to purchase a Firewall with an optional interface. One product I have used for this kind of application is the Watchguard Firebox Edge X5.
Basically... You would plug the WAN interface in to your DSL or Cable modem, and your work or protected network (Macs, PC's, Credit Card verification etc) in to the Ethernet ports. Your Wireless Access point would plug in to the optional interface, which is on a separate network.
This can be a bit complicated to set up, and this particular FW is a bit more expensive that the standard home unit, (about $350). It's about the only way I know of to separate your Airport network, and protect your business data, using a typical DSL or Cable circuit.
There may be other brands out there... this is just the one I am familiar with.

If you are intending using your hot spot to download movies for the Apple TV, you'll very quickly eat through your data allowance.

  • IPhone Bluetooth tether to Bluetooth router for a wifi hot spot

Ok I want to use my iPhone as a WiFi hot spot for Internet access for my laptop and my iPad. My laptop and iPad have WiFi capability. So can I Just get a bluetooth WiFi router, pair it to my iPhone for a WiFi hot spot for laptop and iPad?

Even if there were such a thing as a Bluetooth ➔ WiFi router (I've never seen or heard of one), and you have tethering enabled on your phone and cellular plan, I don't believe it would work, depending on the Bluetooth profile supported by the router. The only type of Bluetooth file transfer profile supported by iPhones is a direct tethering connection to the end device. Unless the router appears that way to the phone, it won't work.
If you have an iPhone 4, WiFi hotspot will be supported directly from the phone with the 4.3 update.

How do I set up a wifi hot spot in my house just for me?

You can't use the wifi card to do both connect to a wifi network and then use the wifi card as a wifi hotspot. You'll need to connect the mac by ethernet and then you can set the wifi card as a hotspot.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Wifi hot spot safety?

I am leaving on a 2 month vacation and would like to know if there is any way to be safe using wifi hot spots to do my banking. If so what do I need to do.
    Thank you in advance,
    Bruce Pedersen

You should be OK with banking sites, because they use HTTPS (encrypted HTTP) with certificates your browser will be able to verify. Just make sure the URL in the browser is what it should be; for example,
    https://www.yourbank.com/
    and NOT
    http://www.yourbank.com/
    or
    https://www.yourbank.somethingelse.com/
If your browser warns you that a site has presented an invalid certificate, STOP. Don't ignore the warning.
For more comprehensive security, subscribe to a public VPN service such as AlwaysVPN and install an OpenVPN client: Tunnelblick (free) or Viscosity (better). Test the setup before you leave.

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

  • Can I use the samsung galaxy phone as a hot spot for the ipad

can I use the samsung galaxy phone as a hot spot for the ipad

If your Cell carrier supports it, you should have an option in your phone for "Portable Wifi Hotspot"  under Wifi and networks.
Look in your Phone's manual for specifics.
    http://www.fusiondub.com/how-to-turn-your-samsung-galaxy-s3-into-a-wi-fi-hotspot -2/
Once you set up the Hotspot, the iPad can connect to it like a regular Wifi network.

  • My samsug galaxy tab...does it cost extra to use it as a wifi hot spot?

Does it cost extra to use my tab as a wifi hot spot?

No. Because your tablet data plan is capped, Verizon lets you use the tethering and hotspot at no extra charge. Just keep in mind that it DOES use data from your plan so if you got a 1 gig $20 plan hotspot will burn that up in a hurry.
Frankly, I wish Verizon would do this on smartphones too. I would GLADLY give up unlimited data in exchange for tethering / hotspot included with the plan. Upselling tethering is so 1980's. The rest of the world includes teethering as part of the data plan service, though their data plans are usually capped at 3Gig or 5Gig.
Believe me, I am not going to STOP throwing this fact in US carriers' faces until they see the light and stop upselling this inherent functionality. It was always intended by OEM's to be a standard open functionality of a smartpone, not a FEATURE to be up-sold and monetized.
Verizon is offering free tethering on 4G LTE devices? GREAT. Keep it that way!!!

I missed you in iChat yesterday as I was posting this to let you know.
It is mostly as the Page 7 stuff is but laid out in a form that can be used without tables or extra div sections of HTML.
As I am sure there are newer things that we have missed such as

and other VJ type apps that might warrant some sort of mention.
Anyhow it might flush out some some more anyway.
I still feel that the credit for this lies with you.
I am going to leave it for a while to see what comes up here and in the other forums of items that might need a mention.

  • IPad wifi hot spot

What is the best wifi hot spot to buy for the iPad and my laptop?

I purchased my iPad along with a Verizon MIFI 2200 in a promo that Verizon offered back in November. I have had great success with it. Up to 5 devices at a time can share the connection but I've only used it with two devices at once.
I did not sign a contract - I go month to month - my plan is 5GB for $30.00 a month. Check it out here.

  • Phone as hot spot for tablet?

I have a tablet that is wifi only.  Is there anyway to setup my Galaxty Note 3 as a hot spot for the tablet?  I don't really want to set up a full service for this as the tablet will need the hot spot only once or twice a moth.
