Wifi icon in menu bar dimmed with and "x" over icon

Macbook Air 11-inch, mid 2013, OS X Yosemite, all software is up to date. My wifi icon appears as dimmed in the menu bar with an "x" over it. I have used network assisrant, diadnostics, fallowed all instructions properly as promted to do so. How do I enable wifi?

I bet you have a Samsung laser printer, don't you?
And if so, it looks like you were dumb enough to put in the included CD! Don't! Those CD's are for the Windows Users!
Look what happened! It now installed the SmartPannel that is very un-fun to remove. Lucky for you, I re-looked up for you how to do it....as when I first got my mac, I too was dumb enough to put in that disk and got frustrated when I couldn't make the icon go away.
so . . . in:
~library/printers/SmartPanel
there is a script called iLaunchSP....Trash it!
Reboot!
It will be gone!

  • Menu bar items disappear, and external hard disks not mounting

    Hi,
    This problem started yesterday. I start up my Mac, and none of the menu bar items in the top-right of the screen show up. Then I noticed that none of my external hard disks had mounted.
    Looking at the Activity Monitor, I saw that sustemuiserver was not running.
    Reading around, I discovered that this usually follows a FrontRow hack (which I haven't installed). I tried deleting the ~/Library/preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file and logging out and back in again. Everything seems to work again, for a while. However, the same thing happened this morning.
    Has anyone else experienced this, and anyone know a fix to stop it from happening?
    Thanks!
    Tom

    I've been having the same problem for a while (I believe since 10.5.3). I have reinstalled OSX, installed OSX 10.5.6 combo hoping that it would fix it, but nothing yet. I have the problem only when I insert an expresscard into the slot and restart. It connects to a PCI expansion chassis. When I restart with the ExpressCard installed, all menu items dissappear and I can't eject volumes (hard drives) from the desktop. If I restart without the ExpressCard in, the menu bars seem to work properly. I tried with an older G4 running 10.4.11, with a CardBus card and the same chassis, and that worked fine... all menu bar items displayed and worked properly and I could eject disks.
    I have also tried creating new users, but that didn't work either.

  • Firefox menu bar is hidden and refresh didn't help

    Hi, Firefox menu bar is hidden and refresh didn't help. It is not available if I right click the top of the screen beside tabs. I cannot find or restore it on the customize page. I have tried 3 or 4 solutions, and none worked.

    Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: Command+Shift+F).

  • Menu Bar Flashes On and Off

    The right side of my menu bar flashes on and off every few seconds. It's there for a second or two then disappears for a second or two. Is there a way I can get this to stop?
    It did this when I first got my MBP a few weeks ago and simply opening an app fixed it, now it just keeps flashing on and off.
    Thanks

    this means that SystemUIServer keeps crashing. delete the file
    /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and run the following terminal command
    killall SystemUIServer

  • Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on

    All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david

    If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.

  • Menu bar is missing and no full screen icon and no minimize option and cannot close firefox or clear history

    My Mac automatically updated from firefox 4 to 5 today, and there is no menu bar, nor is it in full screen for there is no full screen icon. I also can't minimize the firefox windows and cannot quit the program or clear browsing history. This is a huge problem. I went to re-download firefox 4 or 5 and it said I was running 3.6 which is not true and impossible. What is going on?

    Only options are:
    Navigation
    Bookmarks
    Add-on
    Tabs on Top
    Customize...
    No "Menu Bar" option... I am on Mac

  • Wifi status in menu bar

    I am running Yosemite. I have a good wifi connection. But the wifi status in the menu bar is showing the no-connection icon -- a grey fan with an x.
    The drop down menu shows a check mark against the wifi network to which I am attached but below that there is a line which says "Wi-Fi: Not Configured."
    How do I fix this?

    Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network in the list.
    Note: If AirPort isn’t in the list, click Add at the bottom of the list, choose AirPort from the Interface pop-up menu, give the AirPort service a name, and then click Create.
    Select the "Show AirPort status in menu bar" checkbox.
    Try checking and unchecking a few times maybe reboot in between

  • Ocassionally, when running Firefox 7.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.6.8, I am unable to click the items of the left-most side of the Menu Bar (everything between and including the Apple symbol and "Help").

    The keyboard shortcuts for all of the options still work, but will not let me select anything with the mouse. The Apple key seems also not to allow selection of anything on the Menu Bar.
    I can browse normally when this happens; it's not freezing or crashing. And I am able to click everything on the right side of the Menu Bar; the clock, wireless icon, battery, etc. Also, other programs running at the same time don't have this problem. A restart of Firefox seems to temporarily fix the problem, but it's happened a few times, with no clear pattern as to what is causing it.
    Anyone else having this problem? Solutions?

    I fixed this, in a fairly brutal way. Here is the solution.
    Save your bookmarks, like on the desktop. Or you could launch Safari and import your Firefox bookmarks into Safari, then later pull them back into Firefox.
    COMPLETELY delete everything that has to do with Firefox. That includes not only the application, any dmg file hanging around and most importantly the ENTIRE contents of User/Library/ApplicationSupport/Firefox. Indeed just throw the whole Firefox folder in the Trash. Empty the Trash just in case. Now use Safari to download a new Firefox.dmg file and start from scratch. You will have to re-establish your Preferences. But Firefox will not hang, and most importantly, it will not hang your OS. --Gene

  • Menu Bar Problem with picture.

    The right corner of my menu bar has vanished completely including spotlight, the date and time, and various system menu icons. Checking to add these icons in the preferences does not do anything. It is as if the menu bar is "extended" off the screen. I tried various things such as resetting the PRAM/NVRAM, SMC, deleting the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist, etc. I tried running disk utility and an archive install but I keep getting an error and can not continue. I even played around with the display settings. Here is a picture:

    Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    It's not a theme problem by the way.

  • How to disable the menu bar from hiding and fix screen?

    I've looked thoughly to find the answer online, system preferences and here with no luck. I recently updated my software to Mac OS X 10.7.4. Now the menu bar is automatically hiding, but reapearing when I mouse over and the screen in all windows are too wide and long. When I click the 'green' icon for resizing the window, it sizes it too wide and long. I am not in full screen and do not have enlarge on (COMMAND +) and i've check the display settings. Maybe Mac added this as a feature with the update thinking people will like it but I don't like it at all, my typing in an email is not visable on the right. Can someone please tell me how to turn this feature off? Also the resolution/clarity of my screen is not as good since the update. It is not much of a difference but enough to make my eyes hurt a bit.
    thanks for your help!

    Yes it is Aluminium. Yes I checked that it is set to 1280 by 800 and changed the resolution and changed it back many times to see if that would help. Is this not a new feature with the new OS X update? Thanks

  • Menu bar 0% with new battery

    I'm going to repost this with some new information. ibook G4 - formerly using newertech battery, whose health was good. - purchased a NEW apple replacement which showed 2/3 charge on the battery lights- no help. The menu bar reads 0% after a PMU reset - then when the battery is left in, it eventually has the "X" across the battery icon showing no battery installed - the ibook runs fine with the power adapter plugged in. PMU resets still no help. Left the computer plugged in overnight and the new apple battery which was 2/3 charge is now 100% (by battery lights) which indicates to me it is charging. How can I get the computer to recognize the battery?
    thanks for any help....

    Did you restart the computer with the battery installed and the computer plugged in?

  • Spry Menu Bar 2.0 and positioning of arrows

    Hello again,
    I'm now trying to incorporate Spry Menu Bar 2.0 into a client site, using CS6. Two things are occurring: in Live View, for long lines of menu text, the text wraps to a second line (as I would prefer) and the arrows to submenus line up in a readable fashion. But when I view it in IE or Firefox, the text spills outside (off to the right) of the vertical menu container and the submenu arrows are hidden underneath the text. As far as width, I've tried auto and inherit.
    So, out of frustration I finally decided I would just shorten my menu text to solve the spilling over problem, and  a set pixel width that accommodated my longest line of text. But still, even if the text just fills the container, the arrow is hidden underneath the text. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to adjust the positioning of the arrow so that it's off to the far right, as it should be. I assume it is this set of rules that controls the arrow:
    .MenuBarVertical .MenuItemWithSubMenu .MenuItemLabel{
        background-image:url("images/ArrowMenuRight.gif");
        background-position:right center;
        background-repeat:no-repeat;
    .MenuBar .SubMenu .MenuItemWithSubMenu .MenuItemLabel{
        background-image:url("images/ArrowMenuRight.gif");
        background-position:right center;
        background-repeat:no-repeat;
    .MenuBar .SubMenu .MenuItemHover.MenuItemWithSubMenu .MenuItemLabel{
        background-image:url("images/ArrowMenuRight.gif");
        background-position:right center;
        background-repeat:no-repeat;
    ...but I don't know how to adjust these to bump the arrow over. Any ideas out there?
    Ideally, I'd like to get back to wrapping my menu text as well, and I don't understand why it appears this way in Live View but not in a browser. But I'll settle for the arrow in the correct position as second prize. Thanks for your help,
    Gail

    OK, here's what I've done. By adjusting the right padding on #MenuBarVertical .MenuItem .MenuItemLabel, AND #MenuBarVertical .SubMenu .MenuItem .MenuItemLabel, I was able to position the right arrows to where I wanted them. I also removed all links from top-level menu items so that the fly-out submenus would appear on a touch screen. You can see the results on my client site: www.gcssepm.org. I must say that this solution was not intuitive; it took a lot of experimentation to figure out which rule to adjust, and menu rules vs. submenu rules seem to operate in the opposite manner as far as padding and arrows go.
    I do have a similar issue with Scott, in that it takes two or more "taps" to get the submenus to fly out, but at least the arrow is there so the user knows there is a submenu to be had. The only real issue I still have is that for sub-submenus (i.e., third-level), no amount of tapping will get those to display long enough to select them (only an issue on the iPad). I don't know a way around this for the iPad, other than to also eliminate all links from second-level menus that have a third level, and that's more reprogramming than I want to do for today.
    Final questions regarding the Spry 2.0 widget. Obviously, after I customized the widget, saved it, and imported into my site template, it took some additional tweaking before everything was working properly. Is there a way to export the settings back out to the widget, so that all the tweaking is there? Also, is there a way to save my menu text back to the widget, because it is obviously NOT Home, Entertainment, Music, etc.
    Thanks for all your help, and I hope someone else benefits from my experiences as well.

  • Translucent Menu Bar never was and still is not an option

    When I first got Leopard one of the the first things I noticed was my menu bar wasn't translucent. I have an HP w2007. I just installed 10.5.2. I was told it would have an option to turn it on or off. It doesn't. I went to desktop and screensaver prefs and that checkbox isn't there. Its not a big deal but I just want to know why I don't have the option. Is it because I don't have an apple brand display. Just wondering.

    lethal wrote:
    The translucent display features are only available on intel-based Macs.
    This is not true. It has to do with which computers support "core image", which has to do with your video card. I'm not sure of the specific ones that do or do not, but for instance, my Powerbook which has a Radeon 9000 in it does not support core image but my PowerMac which as a Radeon X800XT does support core image and does have the option for the transparent menu. The powerbook doesnt even have the option for the transparent menu bar.
