Wifi iMac Slow

Just upgraded to 120mb broadband (was at 50mb) and my speeds are only getting up to around 70mb, thought it was the router at first then tried a long ethernet cable going into the other room and I'm getting the full 120mb.
Is a Mid 2010 iMac WiFi only capable of maxing out at 70mb? I have a AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x8F) card in the iMac.
Any help would be appreciated

Really I thought 802.11n could cope with up to 300mps? If 70mb is really the fastest it wasn't really worth the upgrade as I no way of putting in a wired network

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • I would like to transfer my itunes library on my pc to my wifes Imac which has her itunes library on it. Is is possible to do this and have two separate librarys on one imac? If so, what is the best way to transfer it?

Is it possoble to transfer my itunes library from my pc onto my wifes Imac which has her itunes library and establish two accounts on her Imac? If so what is the best method to accomplish this? I have a itouch player.

There are many ways to accomplish this, depending on how you want it.  Setting up multiple accounts is easy under System Preferences:Accounts.  After that open iTunes on your newly created account.
Now, is where you could do a couple of different things.  If your PC is sharing the same network and you are able to see the files on the PC from the iMac, then just drag and drop the iTunes Library music folder structure (just the part that contains the actual music) into the iTunes window.  If you can't access the PC files, then you need to copy them all to an external hard drive, and import them w/ the same method.
If you don't want to create a second root-level account for yourself, but want to keep the music library separate, create another iTunes Library.  You do this by holding down the Option key while starting iTunes, then click on the Create Library option.  Then import the music using either method above.

Sorry for a late reply, didn't notice the activity in this thread. Try changing the channel in your router's settings.
    To do it:
    1. Open the Wi-Fi Scan tool http://osxdaily.com/2012/07/31/wi-fi-scanner-mac-os-x-mountain-lion/
    2. Find an unused channel - steps in this screenshot:

    Hi Jeff,
Can you elaborate on your issue a bit further. What is "slow" in your approximation? Tell us about the environment you're in, what type of router, band and channel. How many other wireless routers does your machine pick up? Is it slow other places with wireless or just this current location? New issue, ongoing?

So, about a week ago my macbook pro started having lots of issues: wifi connectivity, slow performance, sound issues, spotlight wasn't working. After going through the issues with apple support, they decided the best course of action was to erase the hard drive and do a reinstall. Since I have a recent backup this seemed like a good enough option. They were kind enough to send me a copy of the snow leopard disk to do the install since we couldn't get it to complete through the disk utility. Not sure why, since it says we are fully connected, it just never completed.
Anyway, so now that you have the background here is the new issue. The macbook pro keeps spitting out the disk I'm trying to install from. Disk utility and using the 'Startup Disk' function from the apple menu doesn't read the disk.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this vexing problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Jeremy.Laurin,
have you tried agb76’s approach here?

  • The speed of my iMac slow only 2 weeks old why?

the speed of my iMac slow only 2 weeks old why?

In addition to abrody's questions, have you downloaded non-Apple software that may be automatically loading, and perhaps not Lion-compatible? Go to System Preferences, users, and look at login items under your user ID.  This is easy to check ... do a safe boot by holding the shift key down when you boot. The boot itself may take longer than normal, but once the boot finishes, if the performance is what you'd consider normal, look to your login items. Also, while looking at System Preferences, look at any programs noted at the bottom of the window.

Please help anyone know why WIFI is slow and 3G is faster then my WIFI. I have a Gamer Lounge Router.

    Hi
I bought the iPhone 4 16GB yesterday after having trouble with my old iPhone 3G(ios 4.0.1/No service). What i noticed is that the wifi download speed is much slower than the 3G connection, how is that? 800kbit wifi vs 1600kbit on 3g :S
The upload speed is just fine
My router is a Belkin N1, I have restored it to factory defoults without any luck.
