Wifi & Impatient Dad !!!

My dads got a 20” CoreDuo Imac, which connects through WiFi to a TimeCapsule. I’ve noticed since upgrading to Leopard, that it takes ages for the Airport to connect on boot, which means that if you don’t wait and load Safari to quickly you get the error “No Connected to the Internet”.
Also if you have a Safari page open when the computer goes to sleep, if you wake the machine up, the Airport takes to long to connect and you lose the contents of the page, same “You are not connected to the Internet” error.
This never seemed to happen with Tiger… anyone have any ideas, or settings that could be changed? Some help would be much appreciated or I’m going to have one less parent.. ☺

I would suggest going the network preferences and make sure in the list of network ports airport is at the top of the list.
To change the order click on the cog at the bottom of the window and choose 'set service order'
Also go into the aiport advanced settings and setup a preferred network. Then you can choose the wifi network and delete any other networks that may or may not be present.

    You just have to connect to the wifi with the Airport icon on the top left corner of then menu bar, next the hour indicator.
    You probably have to enter the password, if you check save the password for this local wifi, next time, your macintosh will connect automatically.
    That's ok for my local wifi at house, and for local wifi at dad's house.

    FaceTime on iMac says "failed". NOw this app worked fine about a week ago and now I need to work it doesn't. I hav ebeen through all the preferences and everything checks out. Whenever I call my wife, my Dad, my work colleagues it just says failed immediately. I haven't touched anything since last week and neither has anyone else. Time and date prefs are all ok and the "help" on the apple site is next to uselss. Its driving me bats. Anyone with any ideas?
    PS - I works fine on my iphone (5). I can call anyone and see them.

    Back up all data.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default.     In that case, it should be possible. I haven't tried this directly, but I believe it should work.
    You'll need to get an actual AirPrint compatible Printer.

    Once you have the compatible printer, using the Hotspot feature from the iPhone he'll have to create the Wifi bubble form the iPhone, and connect the Printer to that Wifi network.
    Then connect the iPad to that same Wifi network provided by the iPhone. When all that is done, the printer should appear in any of the Apps that can Print under the Action Arrow button.
    For instance in email, pressing the action arrow should show a Print option. In there the printer should appear.
    Alternatively you can simply buy a wireless router and setup the network through there even if there is no internet attached.  Connect the wireless printer to the router network, and connect the iPad or iPhone to that same wifi network to print.

    I updated my iPhone 6 this weekend and did not back it up before doing so.  I now notice that my WiFi and Bluetooth are off and not working! I can't turn the back on.  I reset the phone, I even reset all the network settings, but can not turn them on.  I also noticed that I am not getting text an emails as quick.  My iPad Air is fine, but my phone is really screwed up.  Any suggestions?
    Also - I have to say this, what's up with Apple lately? Why so many issues with updates lately? I (and everyone else) pay a lot of money for these devices and the service, how about putting out updates that don't screw everything up for a change.

    I tried to go on YouTube many times on my favorite videos list and I get a message saying: you don't have permission to access the requested resource. I go to settings to see if anybody restricted me from YouTube and nobody did. I went to my friend's house and they have wifi. My iPad worked perfectly in YouTube. I went back to use my dad's iPad and after I watched some videos for a while, his stopped working on YouTube too. After then, I went back to my mom's house and the same thing happened. TO BOTH MY IPAD AND MY DAD'S! Is there something wrong with them? Please reply soon! :)

    I have the same issue. When I select a video from my favorites list (this is in the YouTube app—not through the Safari browser), I get the error message "You do not have permission to access the requested resource." My sister has said she has gotten the same message on her iPhone 3GS.
    The work around is to kill the YouTube process (double press the home key to bring up the recent apps list, press and hold on the YouTube icon until the red minus sign appears, then tap on the minus sign). When you restart YouTube, it works.
    However, invariably, the next day, when I try again, I get the same message, and have to kill YouTube again.

  • How can we make sure my Dad (92) hangs up properly...

    My Dad is 92 and lives alone. He is a Plusnet customer, as is my brother, whilst I am with BT. When my Dad makes or takes a call he doesn't always disconnect it properly on his cordless phone. Then we can't get through to him as we get 1571 instead (for hours!!) and if he does it when he calls my brother then for some reason my brother can't then get dial-tone to ring anyone. I don't seem to have the problem, possibly  because he does this locking up thing with a day-time call and then has made another by the time he and I speak.
    We've spoken to BT who say they can't test for speech occurring, he doesn't seem to hear the howler and at his age is getting tetchy and confused by us asking him to make sure he has hung up properly. Plusnet told my brother they can't even test the line which seems bizarre.
    Some years ago, 'forced release' would have made sure the remaining party was disconnected at the next charge increment and I fail to see why this doesn't happen. So in theory I could ring him, not hang up properly myself, lock his line up and go on 2 weeks holiday coming back to a big bill . . .  really?
    I'm sure this must be a problem with other elderly users and being over 40 miles away from us both and no idea if he's ok is very concerning. Does anyone have any advice please?

    Time it so that it disconnects for one minute before he gets up in the morning, and one minute in the late evening.
    The other option is to leave a cheap mobile turned on, so that you can call it to tell him to put the phone back.
    Forced release used to be implemented on Strowger Exchanges, to avoid holding up the limited number of switches available, and causing congestion.
    With the digital network, its not a problem, however if the called party clears, it will eventually disconnect, but I am not sure what the delay is now.

  • Connected to WiFi, but not loading in my house...

    Can anyone help? Not sure what to do here...
    I am able to connect onto a network (shows the small blue icon in the top left of the itouch). But when I try to use the applications the following are errors that I have been receiving.
    Safari – safari can’t open the page because it can’t find the server
    Yahooo email – yahoo account verfification failed. The imap server “imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com” is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the “incoming mail server” field
    You tube – can’t connect to youtube
    Stocks – error retrieving chart
    Maps – driving directions could not be received
    Weather – update failed
    Is anyone able to help me? Thank you!!!

    I assume this is not a network you have in your house, but some other network. Problem is you are not actually connected to the internet, even though you are connected to the router. There is a proxy server, or some other authentication required. For some free hotspots (Panera, local library, etc.) you need to open Safari and go to a "common" url, e.g. google.com or cnn.com, and you'll be redirected to a page where you accept the providers terms of use, then you are online. Paid hotspots (hotels, Starbucks) also work like that - you are redirected to a page to enter payment info. If there's a proxy server needed and you don't know the server info, or if other authentication is required and you don't have it, you can't use that hotspot.

    Tap Settings > Wi Fi
    Click the blue circle with the white arrow in it after the name of your network
    Does your iPod's IP address begin with 169?
    If so, your iPod is not receiving a valid IP address from your router. Even though you have other devices/computers connected to your network, try power cycling your router and resetting the iPod's network settings, in this order:
    1. Turn of the router
    2. On the iPod: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    3. While the iPod restarts itself, turn the router back on
    4. Once the router's normal lights return, navigate to Settings > Wi Fi on the iPod and attempt to reconnect to your network
    5. Once the network indicates you are connected, see if you can use any of your applications that use the Wi Fi connection

    I did as mentioned above, and I reconnected. It says that I have my wifi connection back, but still won't load pages. I went back to see what the ip address was and it is still showing 169...
    I was at my dad's house & I am able to log onto his wifi no problem, and his ip address is different. What else can i do? I would really love to get this itouch up & running. once again thank you!!

    hey guys
    i had the same problem all yesterday.. This is what i did:
    go to wifi
    connect to the network that wont work. then click the blue arrow that does preferences.. and then click Forget network..
    then turn off your wifi, turn it back on, and connect to the network again (you'll have to re-enter your password, if its passworded) and it should work.. this may not work for all of you but it worked for me

    Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
    Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
    Did the iOS device connect before?
    Try the following to rule out a software problem:                 
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
    .- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • I have been given a new ipad as a gift, we set it up with my ID and email etc.  It keeps defaulting to my wifes name.  Have checked my apple ID is all correct and entered what am I/we missing

    It sounds like you have the settings in the email account on your iPad set up in error. If you go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Accounts > select your Mail account > then select the account email address to look at the details > Is your name set correctly here? You can edit the name in this location, as well as any other details.

  • Wife sync'd herself into a corner - how can we get her out?

    This is a doozy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    My wife and I recently got Centros and both of us had Palms whose files we wanted to transfer to our new Centros. I managed to pull this off with mine, after much research, but the wife, bless her soul, forged ahead impatiently and managed to first do a hotsync with her old Zire21, then install the new Palm Desktop and do a hotsync - using the same User ID as on the Zire21 - with her Centro. Obviously a no-no. This somehow caused her data in her PC's Palm Desktop to disappear.
    So here's the dilemma: I want to hot-sync the data on her Centro back onto her PC, for backup, but I'm stymied by both her Centro and Zire having the same User ID. Can anyone suggest a step by step process whereby we can get that data backed up and hopefully change the ID on either the Centro or Zire, so that we can untangle this mess?

    To get the character you need is hard, it is not an "s" but the last one in the list. Make a new memo and use alt instead. You should see the whole character list then and it should be in the bottom left corner. Looks like a fish on is fins. When done correctly it will disappear. Then check hotsync on the device and if the username is still in the upper left corner you will have to do it again. I had to do this about 8 times once. But it will go away.

    Well, i lost my iPod at school i dont know if it was stolen, it fell out of my pocket or what but either way it is gone. I have the find my ipod app, and contacted the local police, but i just want it back. I have turned the WIFI off because it runs down my battery and i dont get service at school. Can anyone please give me some advice as to what i should do? Retracing my steps, looking at home, backpack, car, room, clothes have all been looked through. Someone please help! It was a gift from my dad. Its really important to me!

    There is nothng special you can do without wifi being on. 
    Report it to the school and change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod. Apple will not help with anything.

  • IPhone 5 WiFi Problems (iOS 6.1.4)

    I need some help. Previously, on a Belkin router, my WiFi connection was iffy but usable for online gaming most of the time. My family recently switched to Verizon Fios, and now I'm having some problems. The WiFi cuts out on me every 2-3 minutes when playing games online; and sometimes it becomes extremely slow when web browsing or other things. Recently it was telling me that my password to the router was incorrect when it clearly was not, so I had to reset my whole phone. I'm really annoyed right now, if this is apple's fault. If the security type has anything to do with it, it is WPA2, and it's connected to my mom's computer so there is not a big chance she will allow me to change it.
    At my dad's house, I have virtually no issues. Not sure of the WiFi and router type, but it is not Verizon Fios. Does anyone know any way to fix this? Or should I just take my phone to an Apple Store and try to get a replacement? None of Apple's "suggestions" have helped me at all.
    All advice/help is appreciated.
