WiFi in a 44 hectare park

Greetings,
Im doing this for the first time!
What product(s) do you suggest in order to create a WiFi in a 44 hectare park? Let's assume that I can place an anthenna or router anywhere including in the middle of the park.

Firstly, you'll most likely require MESH Wireless Access Points. To control them, I'd recommend the new 5508.
Before you begin deploying, I also would like to recommend that you do a post-installation Wireless LAN Site Survey.
NOTE: Read the 5508 Data Sheet because you need to understand the different tiered licenses this appliance has that you may or may not require.

  • Need help configuring Aiport Extreme A1034 to optimize network signal.

Greetings, I am a very loyal mac user from back in the days of the Quadra 650. I have torn apart and fixed most macs for the last 13, but I must say configuring this wireless network has got me stumped. Any help would be gladly appreciated.
I went from a ibook 1 Ghz with a plastic case to a aluminum powerbook g4 1.67 to find out that the metal case greatly diminished the computers ability to receive a wifi signal from my Rv park. I then decided to buy an Airport Extreme A1034 that has the antenna port and then bought a Hawking 15db directional antenna. My intention was to have the Airport Base station receive the 802.11b wifi signal sent out from the office of the RV park through the Hawking antenna, and then have the base station take that signal it received and send that high speed wifi signal to the airport card in my Powerbook G4. Sounds simple enough, I thought it would be. I have found that using Airport set up assistant doesn't give me that option. I then proceeded to get into the workings of the Airport Admin Utility. I have found myself ready to pull my hair out trying to configure the 6 different tabs being, Airport , Internet, Network, Port Mapping, Access control, and WDS.
I do know that everything in the Airport tab is correct. The big problem I think is between the Internet, Network and WDS tabs. It seems that the Airport base station was basically made to have a high speed connection plugged into it via ethernet and then the base station broadcasts to host computers such as my PowerBook G4. My initial thought was to connect via Airport WDS in the internet tab and then set my powerbook to connect directly to the base station through the airport card. I read up on this via Apples Designing Airport networks that came on the Airport installation CD. It talked in detail about setting up the WDS tab to do something like I want but it still involves a hard wired ethernet connection at the start of it. I have also played around extensively with the Network control panel and the sharing control panel , I thought about turning the airport card inside my powerbook into a software or virtual base station and then try some sort of WDS relay. Through all this I had the Airport extreme go none responsive on me and not letting me log in. That's another story of 10 hours of **** fixing it, but i did. Even the reset button stopped working for a while. As of now I can access everything everywhere. I also have ALL the IP addresses Hardware(MAC) address, subnet masks and router addresses for every location in this proposed wireless chain. I just need someone to end this stressful nightmare. They say you learn through trial and error, that is how I learned most of my computer skills over the decades, that and Applecare certified tech training many years ago, But it doesn't help anyone if I stick a large knife through my base station. I can provide a phone number if your willing to call. My email is [email protected] . If your in the San Diego area, I can get ya free passes to the nudist colony where I live, if your in for a new adventure in turn for setting up this network for me. Check out http://www.deanzasprings.com . its where I live.

    1. First, can someone confirm that the Extreme card be used as a WDS main base?
Sorry, but no you cannot use the AirPort Extreme card in a WDS as either a main, relay or remote base station. It does not support this function.

  • No GPS signal on 5800xm

Hi please help me. I cant get gps signal most of the time. can anyone explain to me how this works? I have used the turn by turn navigation TWICE. Other than that, uhm,.. I cant get anything to work. What positioning methods do i need to use? and how does it work. I have a wifi network at home but i still cant get a signal. The 2 times i used a turn by turn navigation,. i connected to a wifi network when i was parked near a building here in the Philippines. The same building the same network. how come i get a signal when i connect to their wifi?

What version of maps do you have? If you have 3.04, you likely have the WiFi/Network setting turned on. To use the phone's GPS offline, you need to turn that off.
Go to Menu>Apps>Location>Positioning>Positioning Methods>turn off everything except integrated GPS, and that will stop any network data costs.
Then set your maps to offline mode.
In completely offline mode, getting a signal takes time. Depending on the location where you open the maps, it can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 20min to get a signal. If you open it in the spot where you last closed it, it should get a signal in less than 10min. If you open it a few kilometers away, lets just say that it will take quite longer.
The best thing to do if you want to get fast fixes is to use A-GPS but this costs network charges. (Globe Telecom has an unlimited data plan for 1200pesos you can avail of).
Or to get an external GPS dongle. This is an external GPS antenna which is connected to your phone via bluetooth (This is for the Bluetooth GPS in the positioning methods). This allows the phone to get signals much faster, almost instantaneously without network connection. There are cheap ones at CD-R King stores, although I cannot guarantee quality, they are generic China made after all.

  • RV parks, metal boxes, wifi and strange connections

We arrived in an RV park last week that has wifi. I know how to connect using a PC but this G5 is new for me and a little out of my area of expertise.
The RV itself is a metal box and that tends to block any wifi signals I can get.
    QUESTION:
What kind of hardware do I need to connect to the network in this park? Is there an extension cable that would allow airport on the G5 to reach outside of the RV? All I have right now is this little white plastic T shaped thing on the back of the computer.
    PUZZLE:
On a similar note, a bit of a curious connection someone out there could possibly explain to me...
I got connected today though I'm not quite sure how. To date I've been unable to access any network at all. airport utility simply says there's nothing there...again I'm in a metal box so I'm not surprised.
I took my xbox and connected to the network via a broadband wireless networking adapter I hung out the window. only 1 bar but enough to connect. It is a little black box with an antenna and Ethernet cable to connect to the xbox with. The xbox shows me the wireless networks available and the signal strengths, etc.
If it worked for the xbox it would work for the G5 right?
I unhooked it and connected it to the G5 via Ethernet and next thing I know, I have internet access, though the network tab in system settings says I'm connected to the Ethernet with a local ip address 192.168.1.101
airport still says there are no wireless networks available. The computer thinks i'm connected via Ethernet and thats that.
    QUESTION:
Are there any tools available that would allow me a little more control over my networking on the g5 like this? I could use a little clearing up on how the airport differs from any other kind of wireless networking and why it doesn't see the wireless adapter the way the xbox or a pc would.
I'm rather confused but I'm glad the mac is so easy connect, i just don't quite understand how its connected right now... except that maybe the wireless adapter had already connected to the wifi signal i used with the xbox and kept the connection even though i unplugged it for 30 minutes and hooked it up to the mac Ethernet port.
    magical.
    strange.
    and puzzling to me.

In case anyone else comes across this issue, here's what I did. I subscribed to cable and got internet the proper way instead of fooling around with wifi. turns out the wifi was very spotty depending on the site you were in and the time of day. it wasn't worth the headache. I bought a larger antenna which helped to see the wifi but didn't resolve the issue. Bottom line, if your going to be in an RV park for longer than a few weeks, invest in the local internet solution.

  • Can Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11g Connect To Park's Free WiFi?

The RV resort where I'm staying has free WiFi for Internet connections. It shows up on my iBook's Airport list of possible networks in the menu bar, along with my own local network which is an older Airport Extreme Base Station (white dome 802.11g) which has my HP printer plugged into it via an ethernet cable.
However, when I am connected to the park's WiFi via the laptop's Airport network choices, I am NOT connected to my AEBS, and therefore cannot print to the printer wirelesslessly. Is there a way for the AEBS to make the connection to the park's WiFi so I can use both Internet and printer from my iBook G4 without having to switch from one network to use the other?

Is there a way for the AEBS to make the connection to the park's WiFi so I can use both Internet and printer from my iBook G4 without having to switch from one network to use the other?
Sorry, but no. You cannot connect your iBook's AirPort to more than one wireless network at a time. Since it will be highly unlikely that you will be able to create a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between your RV resort's Wi-Fi and the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), you won't be able to extend it to meet your needs.

  • MacBook Pro Can't Find RV Park Router's IP Address

I was using the RV park's wifi, which does not require a password.  Now my MBP won't connect because it can't find the router's IP address.  I used IP Scanner and found the IP address.  Is there some way I can "tell" my MBP what the IP address is?  I know SSID, IP, ftp prot and domain port.
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Robert Martin7,
open the Network pane of System Preferences. If the padlock in the lower-left corner is locked, click on it (and provide the appropriate password) to unlock it. Select Wi-Fi on the left-hand side, and press the “Advanced…” button. Select the Wi-Fi tab, where it shows a list of Preferred Networks. Press the “+” button, enter their SSID in the Network Name textbox, and set Security to None. When it’s in the list, select it, then click on the TCP/IP tab and enter its IP address information (if it doesn’t use DHCP) by first setting the Configure IPv4 dropdown to “Manually”. When you’ve finished entering its information, press the OK button in the lower-right corner, relock the padlock in the lower-left corner if desired, and try selecting their network in the Network Name dropdown to see if you can now use their wi-fi.

  • How do you play music from a playlist on an iPhone without using WiFi and iCloud?

I travel in a RV and frequently park in campgrounds that do not have WiFi. I've been told I can copy iTunes playlists (selected from my copied CDs on my Mac) onto my iPhone 5S. I can then, using a mini stereo jack go from the output on the iPhone to the aux input on my DVD player and thereby play my playlists of copied CD music on my RV sound system. All well and good except I tried my Music app on my iPhone and could not find a play function. I found the iTunes Radio but that only seemed to work with a WiFi connection. What am I missing?
As you can tell, I am not experienced with the iPhone although I've used a Mac for years. Is there a basic tutorial on how to accomplish my stated task or at least use the basic music function? I've tried to find something on the Apple website but haven't been able to find anything yet.
    Thanks in advance.

    Chris -
Those 2 playlists were a total of 498 songs. I have just been using the default rate when I load a CD and click on import into iTunes. Is there a better way? My second 2 playlists have about 330 songs plus about another 20 I'm going to load today and then stop and see about syncing them on my iPhone as well. I've gotten about half of my CDs imported. This is obviously a do-as-you-get-time task that will take quite a while. Not so much importing the CD, but listening to at least a couple bars of each song to see which I want to put on a playlist.

  • What changed in ios6 that won't allow me to send pictures in iMessage on my wifi?

This is crazy! My daughter got the new iPod touch 5th gen. It comes with ios6 on it. She is unable to send pictures or videos via iMessage. She has an ID, she is able to send and receive text in iMessage, so she is logged in. This is all of course over our wifi, since it is an iPod touch...
I have an iPhone 4, a couple days ago I was able to send pictures to her from my phone via iMessage, she would receive them, no problem, just couldn't send them to to me, or anyone else. THEN, I made the horrible mistake of upgrading my iPhone to ios6...now I can't send her pics and she can't send me pics! Wait, it gets better!
I called apple care to try and fix her iPod, they had me reset the network settings, didn't help. They had me restore the phone completely and set it up as a new phone, no apps on it, not restored from backup, it still wouldn't send pics or vids via iMessage. They asked me to take it into a store and have them look at it (remember my iPhone 4 is now acting the same way since I upgraded it), and when we got to the store and got on Apple's wifi, it worked! She could send me pics and I could send her pics!
I asked them if there is some network setting I am missing on my router (also an apple device) to make ios6 able to send mms in iMessage, they had no ideas. They said, reset the router. I did that, and it didn't help, I also removed the apple router because the comcast modem I have also has wireless capability. I setup a new wireless network using the comcast modem, connected both devices to the new network, went into the interface on the modem and disabled the built in firewall, and I still couldn't send pics or vids via iMessage.
Next, I went and parked outside of a local starbucks and tried their network, both devices worked there as they did at the apple store.
My wife then came home with her iPhone 4 that does not have ios6 yet, she connected to the new network that i just set up and she was able to send pics to the iPod just as I was able to before I upgraded. HOWEVER, she cannot send them to my ios6, iPhone....just to the ios6 iPod. AND, neither my phone or my daughter's iPod can send pics to her, just as she couldn't send them to me but i could to her before my upgrade.
OBVIOUSLY, there is something about my comcast network connection that is not allowing this to work, right??? But what?? A port?
What could have changed in how ios6 relates to my comcast network that is causing this weirdness??? If it is a port, how can I possibly identify it, and how would i open that port if the comcast interface already shows 'firewall disabled', I can't forward the port to a device (even if I did know which one) because I have many devices that will want that traffic, right? (my phone, wife's phone, and daughter's iPod)!
    ARRRGGGHHH, Any ideas?

See if the pevious discussions listed on the right side of this page under the heading More Like This help.

  • How can I locate my lost iPod touch within my WiFi network range?!

I am still using my 1st gen iPod touch from 2008 for apps and music and other uses.  I rely on it quite a bit although of course I have a separate cell phone for now (will eventually get an iPhone).  However, I synced it with iTunes right before going on a long shopping spree Thursday afternoon then hooked it to my car's stereo system to listen to as I often do.  Upon returning home, tired and with multiple bags, I was trying to juggle them all on several trips from my car to front door (about 30 ft.).  The iPod touch always picks up my WiFi network in my car as soon as I pull in, and with my hands full on my last trip I realized I'd forgotten to disconnect my iPod touch so I could bring it in too.  I'll admit I was getting bogged down and annoyed so I disconnected it then remember also dropping some bags and picking them up from the parking space.  An hour later, after finally getting most bags and myself at least somewhat settled, I remembered I hadn't reconnected my iPod touch to its JBL docking system.  I soon realized I couldn't find it in the house and went with a flashlight to look in the car and outside between the house and car.  I searched for hours in all likely places and again the next day.  I also thought about an hour after losing it to check AirPort Utility's advanced pane which includes the logs, wireless clients and DHCP clients.  Sure enough it was still picking the device up, every 30 minutes or so periodically showing "binding added" and "binded dropped" for my iPod's IP address via NAT, and also "associated with" and "disassociated with" the iPod's unique MAC address.
My worst fear was that I dropped it outside and someone dishonest took it, but that seems unlikely because I really don't have those kinds of neighbors and I searched immediately for it everywhere it could be (in my car, under it, outside everywhere I walked, in the house in the oddest places like under furniture, in discarded shopping bags, the trash can and even the freezer!  Sure enough, for 13 hours AirPort Utility showed activity contacting (or detecting) the device as mentioned above, until about 9:30 the next morning.  Since then there has been no log activity detected, and the device itself listed with MAC address has also disappeared under the "DHCP Clients" pane of AirPort Utility. I realize this could simply be the battery dying after all this time (although it should be in sleep mode), but the point is it was close by for all that time even after I'd searched for it, so it is unlikely someone found it easily after I searched everywhere I'd been in the short distance from parked car to home.  It also has a black rubber "suit" so the entire thin 8GB device is thin and completely black all over, further disguising it, especially at night.
My question is that since this is not an iPhone and I cannot "call it" to find it, and it is only a 1st gen. iPod touch without a built-in speaker to make loud noises unless hooked to headphones or a line output, how can I find it?  It does make the tiny super high-pitched digital beeps when I get a "push" notification but I don't see how that does me any good unless someone from an app I use tries to contact me while I'm in extremely close proximity to hear those faint tones. Anyway, I really do need it and it's driving me crazy knowing it is within such a short range from me either inside my house or car (or outside in a short straight path from car to my doorstep) yet I am helpless.  Is there anything anyone can suggest?  It's almost worst than knowing I lost it anywhere, because I know it's here, but want to find it soon before someone else does (if outside) or the trash gets thrown out (if it fell in there) or it gets run over if on the street somewhere I missed.

There is no way to automatcally locate it.
Since WiFi does not travel far talk to your neighbors. Perhaps one of them (or their children) found your iPod.
If this does not work make a more thorough search of your house to find it.

I have a problem with my Iphone 4s since I did my first update at your Itunes, the bluetooth and the WiFi it is not workinhg anymore.
It is sad that companies like apple are not able to support thier sofware and business.
I went to a apple store at South Park, Charlotte NC,
and found out the worst customer service (in my case)
They don't have answers and don't understand about  "dont let any customer go away sad or mad"
I explain to them that I did everything they said to fix the problem, even to dounload the iOS 6.1.3
that was supposed to fix the problem.
they said fix the problem in other phones but not in mine.
So here I am with no wifi and bluetooth, with apple technicians and experts that don't know what to do with the problem that the sofware they developed cause in my iphone 4s.
and the solution is for me to pay $199.00 US dollars for a problem that I did not cause.
wich means to buy something else from apple to fix a problem that it is not my fault.
    Great! what a convenient solution.
I would like to have an answer from you guys and see if someone there have a better answer for me that shows support, values and integrity as a grest company with solutions for your customers.
Dont think that I want a new phone, I want mine fixed if is possible.
Thank you very much and God Bless you!

Apple isnt here. this is a user based forum for technical questions. The solution is to restart, reset, and restore as new which is in the manual after that get it replaced for hard ware failure. if your within your one year warranty its replaced if it is out of the warranty then it is 199$

  • My new iphone4 connected to the internet fine at the store today, but will not connect to my wifi at home - it sees the guest network, but does not give me a place to enter the password

I just got a new iphone 4 (my first one) and the internet worked great at the store, as well as in the parking lot at the grocery store on the way home - yes I was playing with it!  Anyway, now that I'm home and the store is closed, it won't connect to my home wifi.  It sees the guest network, but it doesn't give me place to put in the password, so I'm not sure if that's why it won't work.  Also, I don't know what settings to put in for the screen that comes after the network choice screen - it has IP Addresses with DHCP, BootP, and Statis (I don't know what any of these are or mean!)  It also has a 'renew lease' button that I have no idea what to do with, and it has a section with HTTP proxy that is highlighted "off" but also has 'manual' and 'auto' options - maybe these are not set correctly?
Very frustrating that there is no manual, and the website doesn't really help with this at all.  Thanks so much!

If you look at the top left of your screen you will either see a 3G (or 4G if you have AT&T) or you will see the wi-fi symbol.  If you don't see the wi-fi symbol you are connecting to Gmail through your cellular data plan, not via wi-fi.
To answer your question, it doesn't happen often but when it does the steps I mentioned above will normally resolve it.  Hopefully you won't have any further problem with this.

  • I am wanting to buy and Ipad.. but I would like to know the difference between having wifi and a simcard..if someone could explain this to me.. and the benefits of both I would appreciate it.

    Good Morning:
I have been looking at the Ipads for a while now.  I have some concerns though.  First, I am NOT a techy of any kind!!  So my question is;  What is the difference between wifi and a simcard(?)   What I understand about wifi is...if you are in an area with free internet.. you can excess it.  If not, then you can't.  What is a simcard?  Is this what you would use like a turbo stick..such as internet on the go... or is this a data plan for the Ipad, like I have for my phone?  If so, I take it that it would mean a monthly bill of what or however I set it up...  Please be kind with your responces.. I am a older person who wants a new gadget.
    Thank you

    Hi, Sarah,
You don't really compare a SIM card directly with WiFi. What a SIM card indicates is that a device is designed to connect to cellphone service, in the case of an iPad a data-only service for connection to the Internet. The SIM card works with a technology called GSM (don't worry about what that means); the SIM card is just how the iPad is identified to the cell carrier (in the US, that would be AT&T).
Your choices of connecting an iPad to the Internet are therefore:
WiFi - wireless network connection which uses a device referred to as a "hotspot" or "access point" (and sometimes a "wireless router") with an Internet service provided by some other company. You may have this at home, with your own WiFi router and Internet service, or it may be found by some other location, such as a coffee shop. Cost of WiFi at home would only be the cost of the router and the fee you pay to your Internet provider. Other locations may or many not involve a cost. The advantage of a WiFi connection is speed (compared to a cellular data service) and cost (no monthly fee other than your Internet provider).  The disadvantage is that you have to be in range of a WiFi service; that range is usually on the order of 100 feet or so.
Cellular - this is a service provide by a cellphone carrier. This allows you to have your iPad connected to the Internet wherever the carrier offers service, which may be in buildings, parks, while driving, etc. just as with a cellphone. You pay a monthly fee to the cell carrier for this service. The advange is of course that it's available in many places. The primary disadvantages are the monthly cost and slower speed in the connection to the Internet.
You can have both with an iPad if you purchase your iPad with both systems included; iPads are sold WiFi-only or WiFi+3G ("3G" refers to being capable of connecting to a cell network) You are not obligated to sign up with a cell carrier if you buy the iPad with that technology; most carriers allow you to sign up month-by-month, and in some countries the carrier has a pay-as-you-go service. If you tell us what country you're in, someone can tell you more about the available cell plans, if you're interested.
I hope this helps. Feel free to post back if you need further clarification or have additional questions.
    Regards.

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although  it's referred to in certain articles.
    Really weird.
    Gregg

I'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to.

  • I updated my iphone 5 to ios 6.0.2. my wifi says its connected but doesn't work now. It doesn't matter what wifi network I connect to. It worked before updating my phone. I can no longer use facetime or use wifi at all. I'm not sure what to do to fix it.

I'm having similar issues with my phone.  I got my first iPhone recently, only had an iPod touch gen4 for a little over a year.  Updated to 6.0.2 when we got the phone (iPhone 5) a few days before Christmas.  When I got home on the evening of January 11, my phone would not connect the router anymore.  I was able to get it to connect after resetting the phone and the router, updating the router, and manually connecting.  That laste for a few minutes and then wouldn't work anymore.   I live in an area with very limited service, we have a network extender installed to help, and I am barely getting a 3G signal at times.
My wife's iPad 4, my touchiPod 4, and all of our laptops are working just fine on the router.  When I dropped my kid off at school today, I noticed that I am not even seeing the school network anymore from the parking lot where before I got 3 or 4 bars and could connect to their wifi when I was there.  Today my phone goes back and forth between seeing my home network but not connecting, to not even seeing the network at all even from the same room that the router is in.
Hope Apple fixes this problem soon..............

  • I cannot access the Internet even though I have a wifi connection

I'll bet this question has been asked before, apologies for any redundancy. The facts:
OS 10.9.3, Firefox (though the problem is also true for Safari).
I connect to wifi at me guest house here in Hoi An, Vietnam, but cannot access any websites at all. None of the other guests here have the same problem, for that reason, as well as based on my experience the last two months travelling in this country, I do not think it is the isp.
I've followed all of the suggestions at support.apple.com/kb/HT4628. Some random settings:
    Location: Automatic
TCP/IP settings--Configure IPv4 Using DHCP, but no DHCP Client ID.
    Configure IPv6: Ling-local only.
DNS server: the same IP as for IPv4
None of the proxies are checked, where it says @Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains, there ".local, 169.254/16".
And all I do is watch the Firefox rotating symbol go round and round and round.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Lindy

    Linc:
Apologies for the slow reply, I've spent the last few days in a remote part of a national park here in Vietnam, the first time I've been in a location without wifi in this wifi-positive country.
Answer to your question: I ran Network Diagnostics three times before I started this discussion thread, and three times got to the message stating that diagnostics could not locate a problem or offer a solution.
End result: all I had to do was log into a different wifi router. The guest house where I had the problem had two routers, and I could not access the Internet from either one. Again, very strange because four other people occupying the same building had no problems.
But when I tried accessing the net from a coffee shop a quarter-mile away, no problem. And no problem from my current hotel.
DNS? A firewall? Until the problem arises again, and hopefully it won't, I will remain clueless.
    Thanks for your help.
