WiFi in Spain

I have an iPhone 3GS on Orange in the UK but am in Spain most of the time, but here I can never get internet access. Some places allow me to connect and say that I have a connection, but others do not even let me connect. In the UK I have no problems connecting to networks, and then accessing internet as well as mail and all internet on apps etc. But here in Spain, sometimes it will say I have connected, but will never load a page/connect to the mail server. I have tried on various WiFi networks in different places in Spain, but still no luck.

Many of those are likely blocked via proxy servers, or require you to open Safari and enter some additional authentication (or payment) details. Not all hotspots are freely accessible.

  • Can i use my iPads wifi in Spain?

I am traveling to Spain soon. I only have the wifi ipad2. Can I connect to any wifi out there?

It is no different than connecting to wi-fi anywhere else.  If there is public wi-fi available, then you could use it.

  • Can´t connect to WiFi when other Mac users can (in Spain)

Two days ago I went to a coffeeshop with free wifi in Spain and had no trouble using my Airport menubar logo to log on using their network and password. Just type it into the box, press Return, and presto, no problems.
Today I get Connection timeout errors when I try to do the same thing. When I change the password to something wrong, I get an Invalid Password error, so I know I´ve typed it correctly. I change it back and it goes back to Connection Timeout. Sometimes it waits a moment, sometimes it takes awhile, but it´s always a timeout.
Other Mac users report no problems. I do exactly the same thing as they do (modulo differences in the language of the menus, of course) and they connect with no problems.
The cafe changes its procedures periodically to be sure that only customers can connect. The key difference this time seems to be that they specify that the password be WEP 128 bit ASCII. When I use the little Airport logo in the menubar, it doesn´t let me specify this. When I access the Network Diagnostics to specify this, I type in the 10'character password and the Join button is greyed out! It becomes clickable only with a 5 character password. So I tried just the first 5 characters of the password... and again it times out.
HELP! As you can imagine, all the cafe personnel can only suggest that I reboot and try again.
What kind of system setting might be different on Macs in Spain versus my Macbook Pro from the U.S. that would cause this frustrating behavior?

Thanks, Henry. I didn't mean to suggest that engineers were the SOLE cause of the problem. Some of my best friends are engineers (grin)! And thanks for the link to the Apple explanation page.
But it still frosts my shorts to pay extra for a WiFi card which won't work in certain countries under certain conditions, without any advance warning. And the same goes for countries which have so-called "experts" (the WiFi guru for that cafe, for example) who don't seem to know about the limitations of their country's implementation of a supposed international "standard."

  • Photos in iPhoto are not mine??????

    Hello,
I've been using iPhoto for a couple of months and am familiar with it's workings.
I have only loaded photos from a Spain trip my wife recently took. That's it. Nothing else.
Imagine my surprise then, when I started iPhoto today and found an album named "Eccentrik's Photos" with 12 sub albums containing 1200++ photos of people I've never seen in my life.
I haven't downloaded anything to iPhoto, and as stated previously, have only loaded my wife's Spain photos into iPhoto.
The only downloading I did recently was (during this same computer session, and previous to starting iPhoto), Firefox needed to do an automatic update/installation. That's it.
Lastly, I'm the only one who uses my computer and it is password protected, so nobody could've gotten on my computer or logged in remotely to put the pictures in my iPhoto.
Any suggestions as to what is going on, how this happened, how to prevent it from happening again and how to contact "Eccentrik" to get him (presumably) his photos back as these may be the only copies he has (or might think he has only to find HIS iPhoto empty next time he opens it)?
Please let me know as I'm a little confused and very displeased with the fact that this sort of thing can happen.
    Thanks,
    Justin

Let me guess: you're on an unsecured wireless network, your iPhoto is set up to 'Look For Shared Libraries' You have a neighbour who is sharing his library, and guess what? You looked and found it.
Solution: password protect your network and / or disable 'Look For Shared Libraries'.

  • Trip to Spain.  Can iPad work on Spanish wifi?  Will I be able to check US email accounts a will there be any special charge?  Do I need to take a special charger?  Thanks.

Trip to Spain.  Can iPad work on Spanish wifi?  Will I be able to check US email accounts a will there be any special charge?  Do I need to take a special charger?  Thanks.

The wifi will work just fine. There will be no charge for accessing your email from across the pond the only fee could potentially be for wifi access. The few trips I have taken to Europe I found some of the hotels charge for Internet access. Your charger that came with your iPad accepts 110-220 volts (220 is used in Europe ). All you will need is an plug adaptor for your charger and you will be good to go. You can buy the appropriate plug adaptor at any electronics store for a few $. Don't let them talk you into a transformer to change the voltage unless you will be bringing other plug in items that don't accept 220v.
One thing to be careful of is if you have a cell phone turn it off or put it into airplane mode and just turn on the wifi. Data roaming from Europe could easily cost you more that the plane tickets.
    Have a good trip.

  • Unable to connect to WIFI in France and Spain

Was able to connect to WIFI while in the UK but since arriving in France and now Spain I'm unable to connect to WIFI.  I switch on WIFI return to settings and it says WIFI not connected.  Then tried to purchase a SIM card with data download but was told by 3 different providors that it is not possible without a contract.  At desperation point.  Can anybody out there assist.  Many thanks.

Try going to Settings/Safari/Reading List and turn off Use Cellular Data.

  • No internet IP from Hotel Telefonica Wifi (Spain)

    Hello,
I'm in Spain (Zaragoza) for work, in a nice hotel where they offer (sorry, sell expensive) wireless "wifi" connection, served from Telefonica.
When I connect to the network in the Airport menu, no pw window appear as is usually the case. The network preference pane tells me I have a private IP.
The computer guys from the Hotel just disdain my mac :
"The wi-fi system for apple computer is different from our system that we use normally. Our internet access is contracted by the spanish telephone company "Telefonica" and the configuration system is only for PC" (big help!)
    Any idea someone?
    Thanks,
    Powerbook 17" G4 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   2 Mb RAM

And what exactly is your problem now?
Your next step is to open a browser and type in whatever URL. You'll be redirected automatically to the RADIUS server Telefonica has installed in the hotel. It'll ask you for a username and password (which you might have payed for already at the reception) or it'll offer you to pay online via credit card.

  • Curve 8520 cannot send/receive calls or SMS when in range of WiFi - since foreign holiday

Re-posting this in the Curve forum, where it belongs... hoping someone can help.
Recently the whole family went to Spain for two weeks. All four of our phones (a Google Nexus 4, a BB Curve 9300 and two BBCurve 8520s) worked OK in Spain, connected to local mobile networks, sent and received texts and so on.
Since returning to the UK, the BlackBerry handsets have all had problems getting re-registered to our home network (giffgaff, which uses the O2 network, as I understand it). The nexus has been fine from the moment we got back, but the BB handsets are not.
The symptoms: when in range of a registered WiFi connection, the phones cannot send or receive texts (SMS) or make or receive calls, when out of range of WiFi, they do (sometimes) succeed. It is as though the WiFi settings are over-ruling the service books / HRT for the mobile network.
The 9300 seems to have sorted itself out, thanks (possibly) to an OS upgrade. The 8520s remain basically useless.
We have tried: battery pulls, SIM pulls, manual network registration, clearing the service books and re-registering, switching SIM cards between the phones (whichever SIM is in the 9300 works OK, whichever SIM is in the 8520 does not work), OS upgrade.
The network shows on the handset screen, and connection is shown as EDGE. But calls do not get connected and SMS messages fail with "too many retries". Attempts to re-register the handset result in a message being received that the handset has been registered but it makes no difference.
The network provider (giffgaff) say they have done everything they can, and I should speak to "an engineer" - but it seems very unlikely to me that all three phones suffered a hardware fault while flying home from Spain, and that the 9300 somehow fixed itself. So I'm convinced it is a registration issue, but giffgaff are not exactly confident in their support for BB.
So - has anyone ever seen this behaviour before, and how can we fix it?
    Thanks

    Good day

  • TS1398 On holiday in Spain, my phone wont connect to wi-fi at my friends apartement but connects to some wi-fi locations in the city. The rest it tells me that "Unable to connect" even though i know the password is correct and my ipad connects.

On holiday in Spain, my phone wont connect to wi-fi at my friends apartment but connects to some wi-fi locations in the city. The rest tells me that " Unable to join the network" even though i know the password is correct and my ipad is connected.
I have tried resetting network connections and switching on/off wi-fi, and also reset using home and top button, still nothing.

Try going to the Wifi settings and clicking the little arrow next to your network, and click "forget this network" then try re-connecting. If that doesn't work, try going to settings-general-reset and clicking reset network settings. Also, make sure you have your network password correct if there is one.

  • Using my Verizon iPhone 5 in Spain: the options

Planning a 3-week trip in Spain next month, of which 10 days we'll be renting a car for a trip in the North. I will be using my good old GPS (I purchased the needed local maps already).  I plan relying mostly on WiFi at our hotels, in restaurants, etc., to check emails (I'm self employed but all my clients are well aware of my vacation...), texting to my daughters (who also own iPhones) back home, checking the news — that's it.  I already got Google's GV Phone with my own number, so we can talk if needed, but mostly we're texting or using FaceTime with them or with friends, if needed.
The way I see it, I really would need the phone (cellular data) only for "emergencies"... Needing to call the hotel if we're late, or stuck, or can't find it...
I am torn between purchasing a SIM card in Spain, or switching to Verizon Intl. service...
If I purchase the local SIM card to have the luxury of my phone staying on all the time, I'd have to pay for it and prepay for minutes and data. But I suspect lots of data will be downloading (emails mostly) by itself, w/o my control, spending my data allocation and money.
If I rely on Verizon's Intl. service ($4.99, $.99/Min.) I will keep the cellular data off all the time, unless I bump into one of those "emergencies".... But if that happens, I suspect once I turn on the cellular data, it will immediately start downloading all those emails that have been accumulated since I last checked them. Even that is not the end of the world.
...I think it makes more sense to stay with Verizon's pay as you go...
    Am I missing something?... Thanks!

When outside WiFi, on the road, even if I turn off "Cellular/Data" I can still get some stuff, like emails and text-messages? The guy at the Apple store said something to that affect... Did I get it right?
You will have access to everything as if you were on WIFI. Your speeds will be slower. You will be using the data allocation of your phone plan that you purchase in the US. It is really not much different than in the US. Verizon gives you 1 gig of data, when you use the 1 gig of data Verizon will give you some more at an inflated cost. In Europe when you use your data allotment you are cut off. You can purchase more data quite easily. Using WIFI will NOT affect your data allotment on your phone. You can chose the amount of data you want when you purchase the sim.
I used some data in Europe to get train schedules and platform information. I did not generally check email or web sites unless I was on WIFI. It takes surprisingly little data to access train schedules and other such information. Video and websites with video take a lot of data.
If you turn off cellular data you will not have access to email and any apps that use data will not function. You can only text and talk. I would recommend against such as checking email and using apps such as maps and train schedules is quite useful. If you get close to running out of data purchase some more by going to the providers website or in one of their shops.
Relative to the cost of the trip the purchase of phone and data service is only a small fraction of the overall expense. Having access to data such as maps and train schedules is more than worth any money paid. Especially when you are not a local and are unfamiliar with the area.

  • How can anyone see message on a locked iPad mini if it was not connected to wifi?

    Hi,
My new iPad mini wifi was stolen 2 months ago in Spain. It was locked with 4 digit code. I immediatelly locked it through Find my iPhone, commanded erase and added info to call me with my mobile number.
In FMIP it says it's not connected and it's waiting to be erase but today I got a phone call from maroko from guy claiming he bought it and saw the message. i didn't get any icloud emails about my iPad though.
How it's possible he saw that when there is no info in iCloud that it was connected or unlocked? It's wifi only.
is there any way that ipad was connected to wifi without unlocking screen or maybe it was just connected to iTunes without unlocking the devide and that way iPad new it has been locked?
Why it didn't erase itself if it showed the info with mobile number?
    Thanks

  • I'm going to Spain and Italy in a week or so and wondered about taking my iPad 3. What do I need to do?

I'm going to Spain and Italy in a week or so and wondered about taking my iPad 3. What do I need to do to be able to use it in those countries?

I took my iPad 2 to Italy a few years ago.  There was an abundance of free wifi everywhere so I didn't even need to buy a local sim.  If you want cellular data, there are many shops where you can purchase local sims (they usually need to see your gov't ID such as a passport ).
Using wifi I was able to FaceTime back to Canada from my hotel everyday with no issues.
    Enjoy your trip!
