WiFi IP address lost when activating internet sharing

iMac (24-inch, Early 2009)
I'm having troubles with sharing my wifi to internet.
Worked great untill today. Wifi IP address (reserved/dedicated address from DHCP Airport Extreme 192.168.0.4) disappeares when the Internet Sharing is activated. Wifi in Network turnes orange and notes that no IP address is available.
When the Internet Sharing is turned off, the DHCP connection seemes to restore and the normal IP address returns.
Both IPv4 and IPv6 are active and available on the network. IPv6 address lost also.
Did a complete rework of the Airport Extreme, complete rework of the iMac network environment, dumped all settings (trashed the config folder) rebooted modem, router, iMac in different order. Repeated everything with firewall off, tried again without encryption, no results.
Everything works great, except for the Internet share (over ethernet for devices using wifi).
DHCP / IP lost the moment the sharing is activated and restored the moment it is killed.
Anyone got any suggestion?

"Stuffed up" is not really a term we use much in networking. What did you actually do? Using what software? How are you connected to your local network, and how is that connected to the internet?
What happens if you use the Apple menu to access System Preferences/Network?

    Since upgrading to ios6, all the family's apple devices (new ipad, 2 iphone4 & itouch) are having difficulty reconnecting to the home hub wifi network. I.e, every time the lock screen comes on, the wifi connection is lost when you reopen the device and we have to reconnect through settings. This appears to be an ios6 software issue.
    Is there a solution to this wifi connection issue or do we wait for a software fix?
    I'd hate to think Apple is going down the Microsoft path, of passing untested software onto the user. What ever happened to Regression Testing, to ensure the existing functionality remains intact?
    I bought into the Apple dream, because it was intuitive, reliable & enjoyable to use, all the things that Microsoft windows isn't.
    Other issues we are experiencing are, Games are stuttering and the kids really miss the old YouTube app.

    Additional things to try.
    Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html

  • Monitor/mange users when using 'Internet Sharing'

    Good day,
    I use a HUAWEI USB key modem to connect to the internet with my MBA when in class. Since one of our lecture rooms is not covered on the campus wifi network I often turn on Internet Sharing in class and bridge my HSDPA connection to my classmates (Small class, I know them all).
    Anyways today I wanting to monitor each user's usage as I caught one of my classmates downloading a 2GB file (I'm on an unlimited plan (soft cap of 40GB) so its not quota that I'm worried about, it just slowed the rest of us for the better part of an hour). Instead of being confrontational in class, and instead of booting everyone off the network I was wondering if anyone knew of a user management tool I could use to monitor those using the shared connection my notebook is broadcasting.
    Many thanks!
    Sam

    I guess this question is bound for the depths of the apple discussion forum with all other thousands of unanswered questions.
    Thanks for looking though

  • Activating Internet Sharing fails on iBook (Mac OS X 10.4)

    As the topic says activating Internet Sharing on my iBook. I am still running Tiger with the latest updates. When I hit the start button it greys out everything. As soon as I change to another tab in the system settings and go back to Internet Sharing it is back to "stopped" so, I assume it never gets properly activated. I tried it on a macBook with a fresh Leopard and it works out of the box as almost everything does and ever did for my since I'm on Mac.
    I am trying to share my Internet from AirPort to my Ethernet port.
    Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Hi cgtobi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Drag these files to the Desktop in case we want to but them back, then reboot...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    Also, on Tiger, enable Personal Web Sharing.
    It also won't work if the iBook has any x.x.2.x IP.

  • ITunes isn't showing up in the Devices list when using Internet Sharing.

    Due to a neccessary relocation of my router, my two computers upstairs no longer have Internet Access (as neither have wireless capability). I am going to fix this issue soon by wiring in a new network to where the router is, but in the mean time I've simply been using my PowerBook G4 (running Leopard) as a Wireless access point. I simply plugged my two computers (via a hub) into my PB and turned on Internet Sharing.
    Now, both of my computers (an iMac G3 running Tiger, and a Windows 7 computer) have Internet access fine. But neither of the two recognise my Apple TV now, which is connected to the router via WiFi. They both used to recognise the ATV and it would show up in devices fine, and the only thing that's changed now is the internet access is coming from the PB's sharing ability, since I did this both computer suddenly stopped seeing the ATV and I can no longer sync/connect. iTunes is up-to-date on all three computers (well except for the iMac which has an older version on it for obvious reasons).
    The PowerBook on the other hand, does still see the ATV in iTunes. So I can only assume that for some reason the PowerBook is stopping the Apple Tv from being seen by the other two computers. Is there anyway I can fix this? Until I sort out a new network to my router which will take many months at the moment due to my own time constraints, this is the only way my two computers can connect to the ATV.

    That's surprising Roger, because it was showing up in searches on iTunes and feedburner has a title that I inputted under that rss feed.  Is there another way for me to add a title that I am missing?  I have pasted the feedburner screen that I see when I login:
    The Bill And Mo Show
      Edit Feed Details… | Delete Feed… | Transfer Feed…
    You should not change "Original Feed" unless you move your original feed to a new domain or a new location on your existing server. Also, changing "Feed Address" will require you to update your feed subscribers with your new address; the previous feed address will no longer work.
    Feed Title:
    (Helps you identify your feed)
    Original Feed:
    (Feed published on your site)
    Feed Address:
    http://feeds.feedburner.com/ (Your FeedBurner feed)

  • Detect users when using Internet Sharing?

    My wireless died months ago, so I've gone back to a wired ethernet connection for my TiBook. When my friends come to visit, I turn on my AirPort card and activate Internet Sharing. This all works well and good, with no tweaking necessary. Thank God for Apple, Inc.
    The problem is, I would like to monitor who is using the internet connection. If my neighbors (I live in a condo) are leeching my access or, worse yet, attempting to hack my laptop, I would like to know about it. I can't find any app included in the OS to monitor such connections (which, btw, seems really insane, since this sharing functionality can be flipped on by clicking a single button). Any ideas on what software I should be using?
    Thanks.
    TiBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Nice try, but fails if they simply assign themselves a different network address, or if they get one from DHCP. No, since his laptop is now effectively the wireless access point and NAT routing device, the thing to do is check the arp cache. I'll bet there are third-party programs to do this, but being a homebrew kinda guy, I'd write a script like:
    <pre>
    #!/bin/bash -l
    currarp=`arp -a`
    if [ -f /tmp/arpcache ]
    then
    anychange=`echo "$currarp"|diff -q - /tmp/arpcache`
    if [ "$anychange" ]
    then
    change=`echo "$currarp"|diff - /tmp/arpcache`
    echo "someone new is on the network $change"|wall
    echo "$change"|syslog -s
    echo "$currarp" > /tmp/arpcache
    fi
    else
    echo "$currarp" > /tmp/arpcache
    fi
    exit 0
    </pre>
    And then make it execute every minute with cron:
    $crontab -e
    (add a line to file with $EDITOR:)
    * * * * * /path/to/script
    And then as long as I've got a Terminal or xterm or other cli window up, I'll get a notification if there's any change on my network. Since my laptop is the access point, anybody connecting to the network is going to be in my arp cache, so we can examine that for any change.
    It's not a pretty script, just whipped it up, but it should prove the concept.

  • After recent update to airport on iMac, the wifi connection is lost when it goes to sleep and requires turning off wifi and turning it on to reestablish contact.

    After recent update to OS on iMac, communication to airport is lost when computer goes to sleep.  To reestablish connection, I need to turn wifi off then on.

    same problem here.
    i have a time capsule.
    symptoms:
    excessively searching for network
    but more often than not, it cant find the correct netowrk that is correctly stored in keychain
    if i try network assistant opened through safari not finding its page, then it can find the right network after i enter in the password again.  it connects. but only for a few seconds then it loses the connection again.
    the only fool proof workaround for me is:
    1/ shut down time capsule. restart time capsule.
    2/ restart mac with airport turned off.
    3/ after restart manually select the network from the wireless icon in the menu bar
    airport utility is a complete waste of time
    old airport utility is still better.

  • Unable to establish TCP connection when enabling internet sharing (Phone acting as hotspot)

    I have developed a small .NET Desktop application which hosts a TCP service. In addition, it sends UDP Multicasts to anounce that service.
    Service consumer is a Phone 8.1 app, which listens for these UDP multicasts and when it receives such a multicast, it creates a TCP connection to the service.
    The following snippet shows how the Phone 8.1 app listens for UDP packets and then connects via TCP
    const string UdpPort = "42";
    const string TcpPort = "43";
    const string MultiCastIp = "224.5.6.7";
    const int TimeoutForServerLookup = 10000;
    //-- listen for UDP multicasts
    HostName hostNameOfServer = null;
    var udp = new DatagramSocket();
    var clientFound = false;
    udp.MessageReceived += delegate(DatagramSocket sender, DatagramSocketMessageReceivedEventArgs args)
    try
    hostNameOfServer = args.RemoteAddress;
    catch (Exception ex)
    s_Log.Error("Error in handling UDP packet", ex);
    await udp.BindServiceNameAsync(UdpPort);
    udp.JoinMulticastGroup(new HostName(MultiCastIp));
    var waitedTimeInMs = 0;
    const int delayInMs = 250;
    while (waitedTimeInMs < TimeoutForServerLookup && hostNameOfServer == null)
    waitedTimeInMs += delayInMs;
    await Task.Delay(TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(delayInMs));
    udp.Dispose();
    //-- we now have the adress of the TCP server (hostNameOfServer)
    //-- connect now to the server. this works when being in a "normal" WLAN, does not work when the phone is the hotspot
    var socket = new StreamSocket();
    await socket.ConnectAsync(hostNameOfServer, TcpPort);
    This works well when the Desktop computer and the Windows Phone 8.1 are within the same WLAN. For some customers it is important that this also works when the Windows Phone 8.1 acts as hotspot (by enabling internet sharing on the phone) and the desktop computer
    (or Laptop) connects itself to this WLAN. In this scenario the Phone 8.1 still receives the UDP packets, but when trying to connect via TCP, the connection attempt fails.
    Any ideas how to get rid of this problem?

    Have you tracked down if the phone actually sends the TCP connection to the desktop? I'm feeling that this is a firewall issue that shows itself when the firewall zone changes (public/private/domain).

  • IPhone 6 iOS 8.1 - WiFi disconnects after 1 min. from Internet Shared of an iPad Mini

    Hi all,
    I have an iPad Mini with 4G, one of the main uses is that I use it to share the internet connection as a hotspot with other devices such my Samsung Galaxy S4 without any problem. A few days ago, I've buught the new iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1 to replace my old Galaxy S4, but when I try to do the same thing using my iPad mini as hotspot, I noticed that the iPhone lose the link to the iPad after a minute aprox after I stop using it, to make the sharing work again I need to go into the Sharing Internet screen on the iPad and turn it Off and then On again. I just want to share the internet and keep connected with my iPhone while both devices are in range just as I did with my Galaxy S4.
    Hope you can help me.
    Thanks!

  • Ssh when using internet sharing

    I have my Powerbook connect to the internet using my airport. I have set it to share the internet connection with an linux laptop through an ethernet connection.
    The ip assigned to my powerbook for the airport connection is 192.168.1.3
    The ip assigned to my linux laptop by my powerbook is 192.168.2.2
    The laptop can access the internet no problem there. But I can't login to the laptop using the terminal on my powerbook using:
    ssh -2 [email protected]
    When a do a port scan of the laptop I can see port 22 used for the ssh connection so I can't understand why it won't work. Any ideas?

    I am not an SSH expert by anymeans however the first step of troubleshooting a newtork problem is pinging the target machine.
    Can you ping the linux box from your powerbook?
    If so have you tried login into the linux box via SSH in verbose mode to see if that shows up any clues

  • What happen to existing money when activating family sharing

    Hi,
    I would consider to use family sharing but all accounts already have money in them. We were used to buying app store cards, and we still have some to use.
    So, what will happen to the money we already have in every account ?
    Will it be possible to use the remaining unused app store cards while in family sharing ?
    Not related to the main subject, are already bought music and apps will be available to family members ?
    Thanks all

    This raise one more question, does that means that purchased apps, music, books with itunes cards will be shared and will go thru the approbation process ?
    François,
    As the Family Organizer, you can activate the "Ask to Buy" feature for each member who is under 18.
    If "Ask to Buy" is enabled, the member can only make a purchase after you give your approval.  Yes, this also applies if the purchases is charged to their own credit balance (or even if it is a free download).

  • Remote App and Internet Sharing Problem

    Ok so basically heres the setup we have, we have one of the recent iMacs, a Macbook, and 3 PC's, one running XP and the other 2 Vista. All of these computers are on a network together. All our music is on one of the Vista PC's, called "SERVER". This PC is connected to the speaker system, so is what we use for music.
    Now I've been trying to use an iPod Touch we have (most recent firmware 2.2, and most recent Remote app version.) and the remote app to control the itunes on this PC. This is not an issue when the iPod is connected to the Wifi the router itself provides (its one of those wireless routers), but when I switch the Wifi the iPod is using to the Wifi provided by the iMac using internet sharing, it suddenly can't find the library anymore. Internet (safari) still works fine from the ipod when connected to this Wifi point.
    My guess is that because the iMac using internet sharing seems to act more like a router than a wireless access point (allocating its own IP adresses ect..), the iPod thinks its on a different wireless network, and thus cant see the itunes library. Obviously the iMac is connected to the router directly by ethernet, if I hadnt mentioned that.
    So, my question is, can I fix this ?
    Is there any way to make the internet sharing mac behave like a wireless access point and not like a router ?
    Help would be much appreciated.
    Thankyou.

    asuming you mean internet sharing as in you connect adhoc to 1 computer using wifi and the rest of the network is wired
    problems is the middle name of adhoc wifi though cause everybody problems imho
    and wifi routers are soo cheap most people don't bother
    even if internet sharing is used remote app should still work if not connecting adhoc at least it's working for me right now
    with a setup of many computers 1 wifi router
    1 computer sharing internet using an usb 3g modem
    remote app works with all my computers and my appletv

  • Lumia 920 - internet sharing doesn't work: Connect...

    Hello all,
    I'm experiencing a serious problem with the lumia 920. It seems impossible to share my internet connection. Something I normally use for several hours a day. If this problem can't be fixed soon, ill be forced to swithc back to iphone or htc.

    What have i tried to remedy the situatiuon?

     changed language to spanisch using OTA update (silly, but read on a forum this might help)
     soft reset of the phone (often!)
     deleted the manually created access point
     Hard reset of my phone
    I'm interested, of course, in any tips to solve this serieus bug / issue / problem.
    (my best guess is that Nokia tries to help their customers with the Access point app, but fails to do so).
    Please, if any of you experience the same problem please respond to this post so we can get an idea about how big of a problem this is.

    Hi,
    I had the same problem. But I let it go after weeks of corresponding with Mobistar.
    Yesterday I went to a Mobistar shop, the guy tried lots of thing I already tried (different apn's, ...).
    Then he told me the it's a problem with business clients. They have to use the apn web.pro.be, where internet sharing doesn't work (he doesn't know why).
    But, that if I call to Mobistar and ask to activate apn mworld.be on my telephone number, it should work.
    Today I called Mobistar Business (you can find the helpdesk number on your invoices), asked to activate mworld.be to have internet sharing access on a windows phone.
    Half an hour later, using mworld.be as apn i have internet access, and I can share my internet connection.
    regards,
    Stijn
