Wifi is excessively draining my battery!

I can't keep wifi on at all in standby. If I do, my battery drains at an alarming rate. I have owned every previous gen iPhone, as well as the Touch, and none of them have ever had this problem.
When I wake my phone from sleep, it's still connected to the network, after sitting for hours in standby. My phone won't last a full day in standby, without even using it.
I have all notifications turned off, bluetooth and cellular radio turned off, all push, all Spotlight, locations. Everything. The ONLY thing that's turned on is wifi. As soon as I turn it off, my phone will last days in standby.
I should note it's been a problem for 4.0.2 and now 4.1. I've tried restoring and setting it up as a new phone, which hasn't helped at all.
So is my iPhone 4 defective, or is there a nasty bug in iOS4?

No it is not a bug trust me. Have you tried resetting your phone? Have you turned off the wi fi settings then turn them back on in the settings of your iPhone?

  • Iphone 5 and IOS 6.0.2 is draining my battery! (new thread)

Well, apparently Apple doesn't want us to talk about this -- They locked the previous forum I had created after 217 posts and 16k views?
I'll assume there is some other Apple Forums rule that I don't know about that would cause them to do that instead of trying to stifle the reporting of this problem?  It was clearly generating many posts that show a correlation between IOS6.0.2 and battery issues.
To summarize... I was having significant WiFi issues on all my apple products (several Iphone 4's and and Ipad2) with 6.0.1 - all the same issues that have been reported on these forums thousands of times.  I was excited to see 6.0.2, hoping it would correct the wifi issues for my iPhone5, at least. Unfortunately, not only did it NOT correct my wifi issues, but now my battery is draining about 5x compared to before.  I can barely get through a day of batterly life with minimal usage whereas before 6.0.2 I was easily able to go 2+ days.
An apple representative called me today (actually he tried very hard to call me for several days.)  I was appreciative of the reachout (saw my other post) and was hopeful they would be willing to help me.  The guys was very nice, but it truly felt like he was reading a script and was more interested in getting information from me.  The only advice he ad for me was to back up my phone and then reset it to factory settings (like new) without using any of my previous apps, mail, etc.  He wanted me to do this "for a day or two" to test it and see if the problem persists.  Then, if the problem is gone, we can work together to restore apps/settings one-by-one until we find why the problem is there.  In other words, they have no idea what is causing this problem, and they want to use my time to help them figure it out.
Ironically, I was able to watch my battery indicator drop several percentage points while I was on the phone with him for about 20 minutes.
When he asked if I would do the restore and/or load profile software on my iphone to track my usage, I said no.  I shared with him I'm simply out of time and energy -- I have logged over 40 hours trying to debug these wifi issues (I'm somewhat tech savvy and figured I could just plow my way through to a solution with my router/security settings.)  When I realized that these issues are all IOS driven, and now the battery issues, I find I've had enough.
Maybe I'll go return this Iphone5 and ask for a replacement.  However, I'm also seeing other posts saying that did not solve their problems.
We are talking about wifi and battery life.  This is not new technology.
If IOS 6.1 doesn't correct these issues, it's probably time to buy an Android.
Please keep posting things directly relevant to BATTERY issues with iPhone5 so that this thread can stay on task and bring to light the correlation between 6.0.2 and the battery.  Maybe Apple will care about their loyal customers, acknowledge the issue, and let us know how much longer we should wait for 6.1 to fix the issue before it's too late and they start losing their fan base.  No information from Apple is only exasperating the problem.

I had the same experience with a new iPhone 5 that I bought  last week. Did not have a chance to measure battery life before the 6.0.2 upgrade installed but I set up my phone exactly like my 4S and immediately started running out of power after short periods. Went to Xmas get together with fully charged 5 and 4S. Heading home the iPhone 5 shut down for low battery and the 4S had 65% power. Both phones had two half phone calls on then and no data usage.
That night I fully charged the iPhone 5 and, without lighting it up, put it on my night table. Next morning I picked it up and looked at battery indicator and I had 42% charge with NO activity!
Tried it again next night and wound up with 37% charge. (Slept longer).
Today I called the carrier and reactivated the 4S.  Took the 5 to Apple Store and they kindly gave me choice of new replacement phone or refund. I took the refund. Uniquely, the Apple Store said it was Verizon CDMA phones that were coming back.
The are other strings on this with temporary solutions, but from my experience with 7 firmware changes on an HTC 4G phone the problem will continue because the solution will be hardware caused. We are in the days where RTM means Rush to Market - not Release To Manufacturing.
I fear the only solution is to either wait for the next model (I did not notice a really major change in performance over the 4S in LTE heavy Seattle area) - or switch to another manufacturer.
It might be useful for these forums to indicate if you have a GSM or CDMA phone to see which have more problems.
    Discouraged....

  • Is twinkle app draining my battery - what else could it be

I have noticed that in the last week my battery does not last a day -after being fully charge in the morning it normally runs out in the early evening when it used to last until the next morning.
The only difference i can think of is that i now use Twinkle - but i am not on it that often during the day. I only check in once or twice and then only for 5 - 10 mins.
Does anyone else have this issue with twinkle or a similar app. What else could it be a none of my other settings have changed re push, wifi, brightness
I do try to make sure i hold my home button down when coming out of most apps until screen shuts down as it has been suggested this makes sure app is fully off.
    Any suggestions or similar findings?

then why is my phone draining the battery like never before. It was fully charged 2 1/2 hours ago and now the battery charger looks have way gone! Am hardly using it today to see what happens to battery. Tomorrow may delete twinkle app and see what happens then!
Very strange- any more ideas from anyone about why my battery is suddenly not lasting as long when i have made no changes to setting

  • Does turning the LTE feature drain the battery life and battery lifespan?

Does turning on the LTE feature drain the battery life and lifespan of the iphone 5S. Also checking emails and going on the internet drains the lifespan of the battery?

    yes
    wifi and bluetooth does too
batteries lifespan is being zapped when used and also when not used
it will get worse and worse and in the end it will stop working

  • IOS 6.0.2 severely drains the battery.

IPhone 5.  Made a 5min call during which the battery capacity decreased by 15%. Then shut down wifi, 3G and cellular data outdoors. Back home, immediately reopened the wifi, the battery capacity dramatically dropped from 14% to 10%. Then with no operations it dropped from 10% to 7% in 30min. Besides, battery cap drops when the iPhone is being used under a USB-computer connection condition.
ipad mini wifi+cellular.  Seemingly the battery cap stopped at 90% during an all-over night charging(less than 7 hours).
    Conditions:
    Beijing, China
dropped by 15% with the temperature -10 C outdoor
the others happened in the room temperature around 20 C
WIll APPLE FIX THIS FATAL PROBLEM SOON?

"I usually recharge the battery until reach 80 to 90%. If you always full recharge the battery, the battery will drain quite fast.
Make a full recharge just once a month (says IOS 6 User's Guide)."
Please inform me where abouts it say to only charge your battery to 80/90% on the iOS 6 guide, because I have gone through the whole thing PDF and nowhere in there does it say to charge only to 80-90% and once a month only to 100%
P.S. you only have so many charge cycles, around 400,  a full charge is 0-100% you can also do a "full charge cycle" if you do one day from 50% to 100% that is half a charge, and the next day 50-100% is another half, which is one full charge, it all depends on the user really.

  • My MacBook Air 13' (2013) will occasionally start the fan at full blast, not connect to any wifi or detect any wifi, and will remove the battery icon from my menu bad as well as tell me there is no battery connected. How do I fix this?

My MacBook Air 13' (2013) will occasionally start the fan at full blast, not connect to any wifi or detect any wifi, and will remove the battery icon from my menu bad as well as tell me there is no battery connected. How do I fix this? I have restarted my computer multiple times, **** it down, and ran a diagnostic test to tell me nothing is wrong and my computer is not running any applications. There is no reason for the fan to be on full blast! when I try to set the option to show my battery icon in the menu bar, it will automatically uncheck. How do I fix all of this?

Have you tried SMC and PRAM resets?

  • IOS 6 drains my battery like IOS 5

I have an iPhone 4S and just like when IOS 5 came out, any notifications that appear on my phone, if I don't unlock my phone (swipe the bottom), to clear out the notifications, they end up draining my battery!  Same problem when IOS 5 came out and APPLE had to release an enhancement updgarde to fix this!
I only have Email and Facebook notifications turned on and I make sure to clear out any opened apps. I didn't have have this problem with IOS 5.1.1.  As soon as IOS 6 came out, these problems occured, just like when IOS 5 first came out.
I used my phone 4x yesterday (2 IM's and 2 short calls) and I started with 100% battery and by 5pm, it was down to 18%.
2 nights ago, I went to bed with a 38% battery and when I woke up, my battery was at 0% as my phone shut itself down.
I have also tried doing a hard reset.
Anyone else having this issue?  Any word on when an enhancement upgrade will be available to fix this issue?

    Brad,
I truly believe the issue is the IOS 6 software upgrade.
I, recently, used to work for Apple (1.5 yrs) and have tried everything that there is to do with remedying this issue.
As mentioned in my initial post, my phone did not have these issues until after installing IOS 6, which coincidentally, is having the same issue as we all had when IOS 5 was released.

  • What is the normal amount of GB of Other Space for a new 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3? Also, will iOS 7 slow down/drain the battery of my device?

My Other storage space was at 2.84 GB after i loaded all my music/apps onto a recently purchased 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3.  Resetting the settings and removing the music and apps did not help reduce the Other space.  I restored to a backup and got my Other storage space down to almost 400 MB.  When I started syncing music it grew 500-ish MB.  Each time I sync, the Other grows a bit more.  This is really irritating.
The official listed available GB on my 32 GB is 28.22 GB (not including Other), so now I am irritated knowing that this Other is taking up my space when I didn't even have 32 GB of free space to begin with. So 28.22 - 2.84GB = 25.38 GB.
I want to restore to a new device to see if that helps, but do not want to upgrade to i0S7.  Is there any way to do this?
If I upgrade to i0S 7 I am worried it might slow my ipod or drain the battery faster.  Will it do that?  The ipod is expensive and I dont want it to go downhill and obsolete on me because it can't handle a better operating system.

Less than 1 1/5 GB is normal. It does grow with time.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It

  • Yosemite is draining my battery. Please help.

Hi! Look like parallels is draining my battery each time it gets connected. The battery drain only started 1 month after I upgraded to Yosemite.
Can anyone help please? Would using Boot Camp resolve this problem? Do I need to reload win 8 after setting up Boot Camp?
    Thanks in advance.

The title of this topic is wrong. Parallels/Windows is draining your battery. Perhaps the Parallels forums are the best place to look for a solution. E.g.:

  • Is there a way to disable push mail from Yahoo? It's draining my battery

I'm on the prepaid plan and every 10-15 minutes my iphone turns on with a "The last transaction cost $0.00" message. I don't mind the message (although it is a bit annoying) but my problem is that this turns the LCD on for about 2 minutes at a time.
I charged my battery to 100% last night, haven't used it at all today and after just turning it on a few minutes ago I had the "Your battery life is at 10%" message followed by a 5% remaining message a few minutes later.
I've heard that it's the yahoo push mail service thats causing the phone to give the message (since it connects to the internet). My Yahoo account is my main one and I'd hate to have to login to yahoo's site each time to check it (the email functionality was a big selling point for me with the iphone). ATT/Apple don't seem to want to disable this message/"Feature", so I'm guessing I would need to step in and do something on my end.
Is there any way to disable yahoo mail from "pushing" messages to my phone? I can hit the Check Mail button if I have to.

    Hi Everyone,
To give an update on the situation: I disabled the Yahoo account and it seems to make a VERY NOTICEABLE difference in battery life - prior to this my battery would drain quite rapidly but since disabling it it's only lost about 15-20% over the past 24 hours (and thats with using the video/music/internet functions for about an hour and a half).. Prior to this it would have been close to drained under the same circumstances.
Also, to confirm, the "Your last transaction cost 0.00" messages only appear when accessing the internet manually now. before they appeared every 10-15 minutes with no interaction from myself at all (while it was sitting idle, while watching videos, while charging, while in my pocket, etc..)
I do have it set to only check Manually but Yahoo would seem to check on it's own even though this setting is checked (I'm guessing it has to do with the Push setting). Aside from draining the battery, it was quite annoying having 30 or so "Your transaction cost $0.00" messages to click through whenever I turned on the phone.
I did have the screen set to shut off after 1 min, but the 'your transaction cost..' messages would first wake the iphone up, the screen would stay bright for about 30 seconds, dim for about 30 seconds, then turn on bright again for 1 minute until it shut off. I'm guessing the screen (being on for about 10-15 minutes per hour due to this) and the fact that yahoo accesses the internet on such a frequent basis are what cut the battery life down.
I really wish I could make Yahoo work more like Gmail and have it manually search for new mail

If you are referring to the fact that, in the App Store app, after you have installed or updated an App, that the Install button changes to now read "Open" then this does not mean that the App is Open and running. It means, rather, that, if you touch the button now marked "Open", the App will be started and "Open". It's just a quick way to get to the App you have just installed or updated.

  • TS3899 How to cancel a sent file that seems too big to be sent - but keeps trying thus draining the battery?

How do I cancel a file that is trying to be sent but seems too big to be sent - it keeps trying to send andconstantly drains the battery.
    Sandy

Try force-closing Mail: double-tap the home button, locate Mail in the list at the bottom, tap and hold it until it wiggles, tap to close it, finish by tapping the home button.  Then go the you email provider's webmail site (such as iCloud.com for @me.com mail), log into your account and delete any emails you find in your Drafts folder.  Then open Mail again and see if it stopped trying to send.

  • Doe a bluetooth wireless keyboard drain the battery?

Does a bluetooth enabled keyboard drain teh battery of an iPad if left on?

I just copied that from ways to conserve battery. I have no idea if its just incrimental or what? You got me there. Just if your not using it and your keyboard is sitting there, turn it off.
You may be getting the idea by now that wireless networking of any kind drains battery. It's true, so another way to save battery life is to turn offBluetooth
*Meg- Who knows Its recommended,  but is it....."Oh your battery will last 10 additional mins with bluetooth off". Could be something as silly as that.

  • If I use my bluetooth mouse with my MacBook Pro will it drain more battery?

Bluetooth mouse (Razer Orochi) paired with MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Will it drain my battery drastically?

Not drastically but wil use at the minimum around 30 mins of battery life.....Depending how much you're using your mouse....

  • HT5624 I don't want Icloud.  I believe it drains the battery of my phone.  How do I get the old operating system back on my new iphone 4G?

I just got a new upgrade iphone from a 3G to 4G.  My son updated the software with Icloud.  I do not like it, it drains my battery.  How do I get the old operating system back (without icloud).  Also, I don't know how to close an APP anymore and I think that could be draining my battery as well.  It doesn't work the same way when I doubled click and then touch the APP it doesn't give me a dash to close it up again.

Apple does not support downgrading the iOS.
As for icloud, go to   Settings>icloud, scroll to bottom of screen and tap Delete Account.
    As for battery drain...
    Look through this...
