  • How do I set up different network locations with different wifi?

I am having an issue setting up different network locations with different wifi profiles on each. I want to do this to enable fast switching of wireless networks. In my house I have two wireless networks, my own personal one and one that is created by using a wifi modem supplied by my company. If I use the company wifi network then I can get into all my work applications without having to enable VPN access separately. It is also faster. However, they also block many applications including sending email from my personal email account, dropbox, etc. So throughout the day I need to switch wireless networks back and forth.
I was looking for a faster way to switch and thought I would try network locations. Was able to set up a new network location without issue. However it seems that whatever wireless preferences, changes, or wifi network order I put into my "Work" location it carries over to my other location which is the standard "Automatic".
What I would like it to have my "Work" location only to be able to connect to my work wifi and my other network (Automatic) to just connect to my home wifi only. That way I can enable faster wifi switching and can even use my launcher program (Alfred) to provide shortcuts.
    Anyway to do this?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Just thought I would bump this up in the conversation. Doing a further search I came across this discussion which is similar: Connecting to a wireless network via applescript?
However, I tried to build the Automator application as discussed and cannot get it to work. Very much a novice at Applescript and Shell Script but have created customized Automator services before. All I get now is "Shell Script command encountered an error". No more detail. I copied and pasted the script as shown in the email thread. Is there any other line or command I need to place in front of it?
    Thanks again for any help

  • IMac slows down wifi/LAN cable connection

    Hello,
I came across a quiet unique and annoying problem, that I have not seen being discussed so far.
I spend the last 3 weeks trying to solve my internet/wifi connection following all kinds of posts here.
Problem: Wifi/Lan internet connection is slow (less than 0.8mbit/s)
Problem only appears when I login with an iMac via wifi OR lag cable
    iMac, 2011 27`` Mac OS 10.7.5
    Background:
I have a 20mbit/s internet connection with my provider. works fine on iPad, iPhone, appleTV HTC one mini, etc… BUT as soon, as I login with my iMac, the internet connection slows down to less than 1 mbit/s
    I have tried following solutions:
    - live box (router) was exchanged and is brand new
    - security settings on router changes (wpa2 etc)
    - all channels on router tested from 1-13
    - keychain saved passwords for Wifi and router deleted, PRAM reset
    - renewed lease of connected devices (no IP conflict)
    - shut down wifi on iMac - connection with all devices great, as soon as i switch wifi on, all devices lose their high speed connection and go down to less than 1mbit/s
    - connected iMac via LAN cable: same problem, all speed is lost
    - iMac is not in the network - speed is great
    - connected iMac via time capsule wifi, same problem. connected iMac via netgear extender, same problem
also, if I open network preferences and start the "assist me" app and run diagnostics, all dots are green except the ISP and server, bit most of the time they switch to green immediately, but connection is still slow.
Reception bar is on "3", so signal strength is no problem, and I´d like to emphasize that this is also happening on LAN cable. and again, if the iMac is disconnected from wifi AND / OR LAN, all other devices work fine.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
    Thanks!

Although I have been on Mac OS for a while now, I have never had to troubleshoot faulty network in the mac itself.
OSX does apparently have a safe mode boot..
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Try that.. as that gives you the same thing as windows with all the extras left out, so you get a basic operating system only and you can see if the problem still exists.. if it does.. I would simply bite the bullet.. wipe the Mac.. reinstall the OS and then carefully reinstall your applications from original disks/downloads and move your operating files back .. but start a different user on the computer and copy back the min you need to get working again.
If the problem still happens even in safe mode boot then do a hardware test.. because it is possible something has actually failed at the hardware level.

  • How do I access a USB server on a "different network segment"?

I have tried posting this question in the Server community but with no response, however I believe the solution will be achived through Terminal and I believe there will be those versed in the use of Terminal here, so here goes.
I have a USB Server with four ports attached to my ethernet LAN. If I enter the IP address into Safari it shows me the Server details and the details of any item attached to any of the ports. However I cannot access anything on the server. If I put the IP address into Connect to Server I get an error message. Apparently the Server is on a "different network segment". How can I overcome this?
    Attached pages from Safari.

    MyBook USB=junk.
If you search the forums you will find many users with problems with this particular brand.
Does this drive have an external AC power supply brick? If not, Apple recommends the use of a powered USB hub.

  • How can I create a WiFi LAN with AirPort ?

I saw somewhere a WiFi LAN (a PC with an external box) where I could put my own "Shared Folder" and see everyone's on the Lan shared data.
As far as I saw, with my included AirPort, I can't do the same, but this allows me to make an html server (computer to computer server, not LAN).
Am I wrong or must I buy an external box (please name it and explain why) ?
    TIA,
    Emile

I think part of the struggle here is in terminology. Don't take this the wrong way... after all I'm the one who is having trouble understanding the issue. These are hugely general definitions, but here goes:
WiFi just means wireless communication between '802.11' devices. Cell phone service, bluetooth, cordless phone sets, etc sometimes use the word WiFi, but that's just confusing... here we only mean wireless computer networking.
A LAN is a Local Area Network. In other words, two or more devices that talk using ethernet (even wirelessly) while geographically located very near to each other.
Airport is Apple's general brand name for all their 802.11 wireless networking devices. They did not invent the technology behind Airport, and thusly 'Airport' has all the same limits and power as it does for Windows and Linux. The term 'Airport' applies to wireless cards in Apple computers, Apple-brand Wireless Base Stations (other brands call theirs 'wireless access points' or 'wireless routers').
A server is just a computer that offers the transfer of data (like saved files, web pages, or email) to other devices.
Given all of that, I'm left wondering exactly what you meant in your post--what you are going for, specifically. You said you saw a WiFi LAN in the form of a PC with an external box. Did you perhaps see a Windows computer getting its network access from an external wireless device? If you were able to share files, that was all the doing of the Windows computer, with the WiFi device probably just transmitting the data between the computers. Later on you said that you are able to make an html server for computer to computer, but not LAN. I'm not sure what you mean.
In any case, let me just give you a run down of what you can do:
If you have a Mac with an Airport Card, you can join or create a wireless network:
--If you have an Airport Base Station, Airport Express, or third party Wireless Router, start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh636.html
--Since you implied that you don't have any external networking devices though (a router, base station, access point, hub, or switch), you can still likely 'make due' as long as your Mac has an Airport Card. To get that internal card to allow direct wireless connections to your Mac from other computers, start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=166640
Once you have all the computers talking to each other, you can share files, share an internet connection, or even host a website for the other computers from your Mac.
--If you want to read and write files stored on a Windows computer,
----turn on sharing in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040
----then connect with the Mac: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106471
--If you want share your Mac's files with Windows computers, start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107083
--If you want to share your files in other ways (as a website for their browsers, for example), start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106660
--If you want to connect your Mac to a phone/dsl/cable modem and share that internet connection with the other computer(s), start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh336.html
Finally, here's another page from Apple... kind of an overview of Windows/Mac network connections: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19652
In the end, no, you probably don't need an external networking box, but it would make everything easier, faster and (in my experience) much more robust. I personally suggest a Linksys WRT54G, but that's just me: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c% 3DLProductC2%26cid%3D1127782957298&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

  • How to end RDP sessions remotely from different network?

    Hi

  • Can wireless backup be on different network to internet connection?

Can you backup to a wireless backup (say a Time Capsule) but connect to a different wireless access point for the internet?

There is no filtering from the wireless into the wired LAN. Any wireless user can access any computer on the wired LAN. If you use file or printer sharing in your LAN the computer is accessible. Of course, if you have set a password on the shares it is not immediately possible to access the files. Network printers (a printer with an ethernet card) should be fully accessible. The major risk would be that the computers are open for virus/malware. If your guest has a bad virus on his computer exploiting some new Windows vulnerability, it is likely to spread freely in your network. Your firewalls on the computers are usually set up to trust the LAN IP network. Anti-virus needs some time to be up-to-date with the latest threats. Some threats are never covered by anti-virus.
Thus, bottom line: unless you really trust your guest not to do any harm and you think that they are reasonable about their computer's security I would not recommend to give them access to your LAN. Even if it is a Mac, often Mac users use Windows virtual machines to run some Windows-only application. Plus, even a Mac can be turned into a remote controlled bot which will only pose the platform for additional attacks against Windows computer. This may be unlikely but it happens.
If you want to be secure, either get a different router which allows VLAN separate of multiple SSIDs into different fully separated VLANs or get a second wireless router which you connect to your internet modem. From there you connect to your WRT with your private LAN. The WRT will protect the LAN from access from the outside just like it protects your LAN at the moment from access from the internet. Your guest can connect to the wireless router which is connected directly to the internet.

  • [Question] Dynamic NAT on 2 different networks

    Hi,
I just want to ask if its possible to have same dynamic translation within 2 different networks like:
    interface gig 0/1
    1.1.1.1 255.255.255.0 (LAN Connection w/ DHCP enabled)
    inteface gig 0/2
    2.2.2.1 255.255.255.0 (Wireless Connection w/ DHCP enabled)
Actually, the scenario was 1.1.1.1 is my LAN connection and 2.2.2.1 are my Wireless connection.
Hope this merits their favorable response. Thanks.

    Hi,
Do you mean that you want both of the said LAN networks to use Dynamic NAT/PAT towards a third interface on the ASA?
If you simply want to use the same NAT/PAT address for 2 different networks on the ASA then you can use the following configurations as example
These are PAT translations to a single IP address. Using a NAT Pool would change the configurations slightly.
For ASA software 8.2 and below
    global (outside) 100 3.3.3.1
    nat (inside) 100 1.1.1.0 255.255.255.0
    nat (wireless) 100 2.2.2.0 255.255.255.0
    Where
outside, inside and wireless = Interface "nameif" on the ASA firewall
100 = Is just an ID number for the NAT configuration. You can use other one also
For ASA software 8.3 and after
    object-group network PAT-SOURCE-NETWORKS
    network-object 1.1.1.0 255.255.255.0
    network-object 2.2.2.0 255.255.255.0
nat (inside, outside) after-auto source dynamic PAT-SOURCE NETWORKS interface
nat (wireless, outside) after-auto source dynamic PAT-SOURCE NETWORKS interface
    Where
PAT-SOURCE-NETWORKS = Is an "object-group" where you can define the source networks for the NAT/PAT rule
Hope this helps Please if you found the information helpfull
Feel free to ask more if this didnt answer your question.

  • How to manage streaming in different networks??........

    hi,
can anyone tell me about how to manage one-one streaming thru different networks?.... For eg:- in a LAN connection, suppose 2 machines have ip's 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.153. but when the first machine is connected to internet, it's ip changes to say, 220.56.0.89. But the second machine even if it has internet facility , it's ip is still 192.168.0.153. how can i get the global IP of the second machine?
    or,
How can i send/receive streams between these two??......

    Backup to what where??
Do you mean backup to your TC sitting at home? Apple recommends you do not do it. It is too easy to corrupt and the speeds are too slow unless you have high speed fibre at both locations.
Do you mean cloud? Yes, you can probably backup your files to the cloud but you will need to pay for the extra storage and it is still very slow due to upload speed being a fraction of download.

  • Does tcp works on different networks

    Hello,
    I have a problem with TCP/IP communication.
I write a program for TCP/IP communication (server-client) and it works fine when I tested in office (the same network). But when I tested program when server and client VI are connected to different network I dont have any communication.
Does TCP/IP work when client.VI and server.VI are connected to different networks? If not, does anybody have suggestion which protocol to use? Problem is that server VI must be in exe format but client VI must be open for change.
    Thanks

I think we have to clear up some things before going into detailed "debugging".
First of, when talking about "networks", i expect you to refer to "LAN" (local area network). A LAN often uses a dedicated "subnet" identification, which is a combination of the IP address(es) and the subnet mask. The subnet mask defines which part of the IP address refers to the LAN identification, the "rest" of the IP refers to the specific PC.
An IP(4) address consists of four bytes, a subnet mask gives instruction on how many bits and bytes are the "LAN ID". Subnet masks often are 255.255.255.0.
So when saying "works in office (same network)", you do mean: same subnet. Correct?
(All IP addresses share the same values in the bytes of the subnet mask, but differ in the rest. Example: PC A 192.168.1.12, subnet 255.255.255.0. PC B 192.168.1.15, subnet 255.255.255.0.)
If the PCs are NOT within the same subnet, it depends on the network setup on how to proceed. If there is a "direct connection path" from A to B, simply the target IP address is sufficient (e.g. A 192.168.1.15, subnet 255.255.255.0, B 11.88.2.126, subnet 255.255.255.0 works if subnet 192.168.1 has direct connection to subnet 11.88.2).
If there is NO direct connection, you require "port forwarding" on the hardware (router) inbetween. This can get quite difficult.
So depending on the goal of this request, you maybe better re-architect the approach of loading dynamic components in your application.

  • IPad mini will connect to wifi WAN, but not wifi LAN?

Connecting to Sierra Hotspot, mini will only stay connected with Internet access turned on: won't connect to wifi LAN without internet access?  iPad and even iPhone and MacBookAir have no problem...  The mini redirects me to turn-on the Internet network when trying to connect to the wifi, and this isn't always necessary or available, and it won't allow me to do anything else until the "Internet connection issue is resolved".
I've tried all of the usual things: reseting the iPad mini, various connection techniques, even an AirPort Express bridge...

This was resolved by entering network setting manually.

If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast.  If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used.  The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID .  Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network.  A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default.  Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in.  HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you.  You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files.  Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.

  • How to use two different network cards on RT?

Hi everyone... I'm currently working on a project where I have to deal with the issue mentioned in the thread's topic: I have a PC with RT LabVIEW that has to be able to establish network connections using two different network cards. One will be used to connect via TCP/IP with a host computer that will show the data transmitted through shared variables; the other will communicate with another PC through Modbus protocol. The key is that each communication is done through a separate network card.
So far I haven't been able to figure out how to configure both things to happen. Does anyone know how to do this? Any tips will help.
For the RT communication I'm using a standard RT project, with the RT PC being given one of the IPs, and for the Modbus part, I created an I/O server with a master and a slave. Separately everything works fine, but when I get them together it simply won't work.
    Thanks for your help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sorry it took me so long to answer, I've been busy lately....I've found a solution to the problem I mentioned, and just in case anyone has similar problems in the future, I'll shortly describe what happened.
As Caseyw suggested, it was necessary to enable both network cards through the Measurement and Automation Explorer. The cause of the connections malfunction was actually that I wasn't using the "right" protocol for the Modbus communication, which ran on the secondary adapter. The solution was to use the URL protocol with the correct path on the field, addressing the right IP address. To avoid making this post a mixture of topics, I won't elaborate futher, but I got the gist of it, so if anyone is having similar problems whether it is working with several network cards or with Modbus communication protocols, feel free to contact me, I'll be glad to help.
    Thanks

  • When i put my own contacts into my iphone 3gs and deleted existing ones, the same happened on my mums iphone 4? my iphone was hers previously, but has been unlocked by o2, we have different networks and were 12 miles apart when i did it!

My mum upgraded last week from iphone 3gs to iphone 4, I got the iphone 3gs unlocked as of this morning and proceeded to remove her contacts and put my own in.
Several hours later she came home from work to find her contacts on the iphone 4 had been replaced with the same list i had put on mine!
We have different networks, different itunes accounts etc, I can't understand why or how this has happened or most importantly how to fix it as she has lost all her numbers and is understandably very very cross....

contacts are not visible in back up, but if she restores from that back up - contacts will come back to phone. Then all her apps and music have to be synced back again. She will also have all other personal info return to the phone, but all that info will be as old, as back up itself.
