WiFi Networks and an iPod Touch.
I have seen many comments about WiFi networks and the seemingly impossibility of the iPod to connect to some.
However, I have not come across a solution to my issue - there may have been one but I confess I've not been successful at finding it!
I have set up a home network. At first I used an Airport Extreme but then it died so I set things up with a NetGear DG834GT. The home network uses a WPA2 password.
At home no problem - my MacBook Pro (Core2Duo), my son's iMac i7, my 2nd Gen iPod Touch (4.2.1) and my iPad 2 all connect great to the WiFi network. I can surf the web etc etc. I'm a happy bunny.
When I'm out and about I often use my iPod Touch to get access to the web and my e-mails etc using WiFi. Most networks are secured meaning you have to type in a password. Hotels are like this and usually there is no problem once the front desk gives me the password. The unsecured ones are often WiFi Zone Hotspots where you have to pay to continue. I don't usually bother with these.
Some sites though offer unsecured, free access and free internet use - coffee shops in particular. A coffee shop near me has such a network and I have absolutely no problem connecting. However, I have come across a few networks which show up in the "Available Networks" list complete with name etc. And yet when you select this network and try to join I get the message "Unable to join such and such Network. Obvioulsy with no network connection there is no internet etc.
Usually I simply ignore this problem and wait until the next WiFi network is available (when I get home?). Not quite so reliable if home is 3000 miles away!
But does anyone know why there are some networks that I cannot join? Is there a solution for this that I can carry out? I've tried the usual things like resetting the iPod, forgetting the network etc. Obviously I do not have access to the router as this is owned and operated by the company/enterprise concerned.
Not a show stopper by any means but an irritation nevertheless. Incidentally, there were also a few networks recently on my travels where both the Touch and the iPad behaved the same. i.e. I couldn't join some networks with either device.
Thoughts?
Interesting hypothesis B-rock. I could try contacting the network administrator but my guess is that I'll be met with a blank look when I ask for that! Still can't be bad to try!
Another piece of "anecdotal" evidence for you. At the local garden centre (which is part of a chain) I used to be able to connect - no problem. Then suddenly all connections failed - at all locations. I am leaning towards believing that they have changed routers to more "modern" ones and for some reason these new routers won't allow connection to an iPod/iPad etc. As yet I cannot confirm this or otherwise and unless someone comes up with a bright idea I'm left with the feeling that unless the network administrator recognises that he/she needs to create a network that works with iPads/iPhones etc we're doomed. I noticed that the next table over using a PC had no problems! Grrrr.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
Any error messages?
Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

For the future, saying you tried everything provides use with zero info as to what you did try. If you really tried everything then there is no way we could help -
Hi my wife has a 2008 iPod Touch which she has not used for approximately 5 years. It will not charge and I have tried to carry out a Device Firmware Upgrade to no effect. Can anyone please help?
Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
- Next try the manual install method of:
iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.
- Then try on another computer -

I have an iPad 2 and am iPod touch 5. Yesterday, my iPad all of the sudden did not want to pick up ANY signal at all in my house. It's like it completely give up on wifi, while my iPod and my laptop works just fine in the same spot. (I have an upstairs bedroom, while the router is downstairs in the kitchen).
So I have been trying yesterday to get it to work so what I have done is completely wipe the memory clean after I backed it up on iTunes. After resetting it, I restored it. Still nothing. So I tried to take my iPad down nearer to the wifi router, and OMG it picked up the wifi signal! WHUT?!? It didn't yesterday though...
But now whenever I am up in my bedroom, my iPad would not pick up the wifi at all, or if it did, the wifi would be super duper weak! But two days ago, it was PERFECTLY okay! My iPod and laptop that is sitting right next to the iPad up in my bedroom pick up the signal completely fine.
Can someone help me? What should I do? Is it problems with my iPad or would it be my router that is the problem? Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
• Launch Settings app
• Tap on Wi-Fi
• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

The difference between an iphone and an ipod touch?
i want to know if the difference between an iphone and an ipod touch is just that the iphone is like a phone that has internet and is a phone. or what else is it?
The iPhone includes the same as an iPod Touch but also includes a phone, a camera, and a GPS radio.
In addition to having internet access via wi-fi, the iPhone also has internet access via the cellular network, so as long as you have cellular reception with the iPhone, you have access to the internet in addition to having access via an available wi-fi network. -
Two mac laptops, one iPhone and an iPod touch. Sync apps?
Hi there, between my wife and I, we have two Mac laptops, one iPhone and an iPod touch. The iPod touch is new- is it possible to get the apps that have already been purchased for the iPhone, onto the iTouch?
schmjorgen wrote:
but can i then only ever use both the iphone and itouch with that particular mac?
you can use home sharing to transfer media files (incl. apps) between the two Macs. if you and your wife use separate Apple ID's to purchase content, authorize the wife's machine for yours and yours for hers.
is there a way to make both portable devices work with both macs?
by design, iOS devices sync with only one library at a time.
i am hoping the "home sharing" feature will be the answer but so far i have not been able to make it work.

I have an Ipad and an Ipod Touch 5th gen both on the latest firmwares but they won't connect via Bluetooth whenever I try even though both shows that the devices are discoverable. I also tried connecting them with my Bluetooth enabled laptop but it also didn't worked. Because of the Bluetooth not working I also can't enable airdrop.

What you need
To share content with AirDrop, both people need one of these devices using iOS 7 or later, or a Mac with OS X Yosemite:
iPhone 5 or later
iPad (4th generation or later)
iPad mini
iPod touch (5th generation)
You also need to turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If you want to share with your contacts, sign in to your iCloud account.

System Requirements
To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.
In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.
To transfer files between two Mac computers, you need the Mac models listed below with Wi-Fi turned on and OS X Lion or later installed.
MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)

Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)
*The MacBook Pro (17-Inch Late 2008) and the white MacBook (Late 2008) do not support AirDrop.
For help identifying your Mac, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu. You can refer to the Apple Support website to find out if your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch includes a lightning connector.

Otherwise you need an app to pair via BT one iOS device to another iOS device. There may be apps that allow pairing with a Mac computer. The iOS devioces do not have the BT profiles necessary natively to pair with a computer or another iOS device except for AirDrop -
How do I get access to Itunes if my husband has already downloaded itunes on our 2 computers and his iphone 4 is the device for one computer and the ipod touch is the device for the second? I have already set up my own itunes account, but it doesn't recognize my phone on either of the computers. Do I need to down load a second itunes software on the computer just for my new device. That would seem ridiculous considering we are married and share all of the music together. Please help
There is no "adding" a device. Simply plug the iDevice into the computer. iTunes should automatically detect the device when it is connected.
iTunes can sync/manage as many iDevices as you want... there is no 1 device limit. -

Do you have a Mac or idevice for setting up the Express? It does require a later utility than is available for windows.
You might be able to setup with the v5 utility in windows but there is no guarantee.
You should use a simple name both for the base and the wireless. eg AEXgen2 base name and AEXwifi for wireless name.. that is if you get access.
