WiFi Oddity - Strange - Linksys WAG320N

Hi guys,
Been having a rather odd problem getting this router setup. Connects to other Pcs fine, internet works etc.
It's the whole wireless issue agaaaain.
It's a dual band router, which puts up alarm bells right away... but... I can get it connecting fine under 5ghz , N-only mode, Channel Bandwidth Wide - 40hz.
Connects, absolutely no problems. Strong signal infact.
As soon as I drop it down to 2.4ghz and lower the bandwidth to standard channel 20mhz. It can barely hold a connection, even on forced N mode.
It just doesn't make any sense.
The problem this leaves me with, is for my gf's laptop I have to drop it 2.4ghz and then can't use the iPad.
Tried combinations involving Mixed B / G / N and still. No dice on 2.4ghz.
My old Belkin worked fine, but needed replacing. This is driving me crazy, not much help from Linksys Cisco neither.
I've got firmware 3.2.1 on the iPad too.

Changed SSID, reset network settings on iPad (where it reboots).
Tried again.
Setup one on 2.4ghz, N-mode and wide channel. Connection falls over, drops to bottom near instantly.
New SSID for each test.
2.4ghz, standard channel 20mhz, G mode.
Again, connects fine then the WIFI signal just bombs.
Third attempt.
2.4ghz , B/G/N mixed, standard channel mode 20mhz.
Same problem, crashes down to nothingness.
Fourth attempt.
2.4Ghz, B/G/N Mixed, Wide channel mode 40mhz.
Fail.
It will only connect at 5Ghz, which Apple claim their devices don't support. I really don't get this mess.
Can't blame the router, other devices in the house get a really strong signal. Infact, strongest i've had setup on five different routers in this house.
I had these same problems with the Netgear DGN2000 I had a couple of days ago where Wireless N mode just wouldn't work at all with the iPad.

  • AirPort Express not working with Linksys WAG320N

I'm trying to use an AirPort Express to stream music to my home theater speakers.
It's currently plugged in to my router (Linksys WAG320N) via ethernet cable. I can get it to initially play music via AirPlay, but it won't last more than 1 track before it cuts out. It seems to be doing something to the router settings because I then can't see the wireless network via my Macbook Pro or iPhone, and have to change the channel of the router to get it working again.
Are there known compatibility issues between Airport Express and these routers?
    Thanks

    Any thoughts anyone?

  • Cannot make WiFi connection with Linksys X2000

    Hey ,
I have been setting up my Cisco X2000 wireless router recently and I have it working fine for my wired connections, however for some reason when you try to use the wireless none of our smartphones,  can connect, unless using a wireless guest account.
I tryed different security settings with different passwords, but none worked (WEP, WPA, WPA2...)
Can someone help me out on this problem? I can't imagine what would be causing this.
    Firmware Version: v2.0.05
    Thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Got  my solution from the Live chat:
Jermine P: Here are the steps to set up the router for cable connection:
Step 1 - Hard reset the router to ensure that all previous settings would be erased, please follow the instructions below.
    1. Make sure that the device is turned on.
    2. Press and hold the reset button at the back for 1 minute. Use a paper clip to do the reset.
    3. Remove the power plug and wait for another a minute.
    4. Turn on the device again.
Step 2 - Access the setup page.
    1. Connect the main PC to port one of the router and restart it. Connect the modem to the Internet port.
    2. Launch your browser (like Internet Explorer). In the address bar, type http://192.168.1.1 and hit GO.
    3. A login prompt will come on, leave the User Name blank and type admin for the Password.
Step 3 - Setting up the router to work with your ISP.
    1. Under Setup tab, click on MAC address clone sub-tab.
    2. Enable MAC Address Clone and click on Clone My PC's MAC.
    3. Click "Save Settings" button.
Step 4 - Personalizing the wireless settings of the router.
    1. Click on the Wireless tab and set it to Manual.
    2. Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from "linksys" to your preferred name (example: My Network).
    3. Set Channel Width to 20Mhz and change the Wireless Channel from Auto to 11.
    4. Set SSID Broadcast to Enabled.
    5. Click "Save Settings" button.
Step 5 - Securing your wireless network.
    1. Click on the Wireless Security sub-tab just beside Basic Wireless Settings.
    2. Change the Security Mode from None to WPA2 Personal.
    3. Type any word on the Passphrase field for and take note of it.
    4. That will be the Password for you to connect to the wireless network.
    5. Click "Save Settings" button.
    Step 6 - Power Cycle.
    a. Shut down the computer.
    b. Unplug the power cord of the router followed by the modem.
    c. After 3 minutes, plug the power cord of the modem back in and wait for the power light to get solid before plugging the router back in.
    d. Turn the computer back on as soon as the power light on the router becomes solid.
    e. Check your Internet connection.
strange thing is that I set the modem up this way in the first place, but without the power resets and it didn 't work.
Thanks to Jermine P for the efforts taken.
    Greetings,
    Karel

  • RV parks, metal boxes, wifi and strange connections

We arrived in an RV park last week that has wifi. I know how to connect using a PC but this G5 is new for me and a little out of my area of expertise.
The RV itself is a metal box and that tends to block any wifi signals I can get.
    QUESTION:
What kind of hardware do I need to connect to the network in this park? Is there an extension cable that would allow airport on the G5 to reach outside of the RV? All I have right now is this little white plastic T shaped thing on the back of the computer.
    PUZZLE:
On a similar note, a bit of a curious connection someone out there could possibly explain to me...
I got connected today though I'm not quite sure how. To date I've been unable to access any network at all. airport utility simply says there's nothing there...again I'm in a metal box so I'm not surprised.
I took my xbox and connected to the network via a broadband wireless networking adapter I hung out the window. only 1 bar but enough to connect. It is a little black box with an antenna and Ethernet cable to connect to the xbox with. The xbox shows me the wireless networks available and the signal strengths, etc.
If it worked for the xbox it would work for the G5 right?
I unhooked it and connected it to the G5 via Ethernet and next thing I know, I have internet access, though the network tab in system settings says I'm connected to the Ethernet with a local ip address 192.168.1.101
airport still says there are no wireless networks available. The computer thinks i'm connected via Ethernet and thats that.
    QUESTION:
Are there any tools available that would allow me a little more control over my networking on the g5 like this? I could use a little clearing up on how the airport differs from any other kind of wireless networking and why it doesn't see the wireless adapter the way the xbox or a pc would.
I'm rather confused but I'm glad the mac is so easy connect, i just don't quite understand how its connected right now... except that maybe the wireless adapter had already connected to the wifi signal i used with the xbox and kept the connection even though i unplugged it for 30 minutes and hooked it up to the mac Ethernet port.
    magical.
    strange.
    and puzzling to me.

In case anyone else comes across this issue, here's what I did. I subscribed to cable and got internet the proper way instead of fooling around with wifi. turns out the wifi was very spotty depending on the site you were in and the time of day. it wasn't worth the headache. I bought a larger antenna which helped to see the wifi but didn't resolve the issue. Bottom line, if your going to be in an RV park for longer than a few weeks, invest in the local internet solution.

  • Trying to set up Time Capsule for WiFi access with Linksys router

Problem: I must use a Linksys router to connect to internet, since I have my telephone connected to this router (Vonage). I have set up a Time Capsule and connected it to the Linksys router, which is NOT wireless. I would like to use the wireless capability of the Time Capsule to provide wifi connection for laptop computers. The Time Capsule's wireless network is visible to these computers, but they do not connect to the network, since the Time Capsule is not the source of dynamic IP addresses; rather, the Linksys router is the source for IP addresses on my network. What must I do to get IP addresses supplied to computers attached via wifi?

The Time Capsule was set up using bridge mode. My initial error was to use the WAN port. After switching to a LAN port to connect with the Linksys router, the laptop computer was able to connect to the network wirelessly, but it could not obtain web page from the internet.
The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000; with an ethernet cable attached to the Time Capsule, it receives an IP address AND it can obtain web pages from the internet. The command "ipconfig /all" issued at the DOS prompt yields approximately the following:
Broadcom... (this is the ethernet card) ... IP address 192.168.15.104, with the gateway 192.168.15.1 (which is the Linksys router)
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless... (this is the wireless card) ... IP address 192.168.15.103, with the same gateway.
I can ping the iMac from the Dell laptop; the iMac is connected directly to the Linksys router. Running ping 192.168.15.104 from Terminal on the iMac succeeds, while ping 192.168.15.103 does not.

  • EA6700 WiFi 5GHz strange problem ...

After a week of action on wifi 5 GHz network is suddenly stopped functioning. (2.4GHz network was turned off)
    Restarts did not help.
It only activates a network to include 2.4 GHz, or a total restart (default setting) router.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem?
The software is very weak, simplistic up (exaggerated)
No manual configuration features multiple settings (eg NTP....)
Linksys was famous for its stability and reliability!
Unfortunately now I can not tell!
    TRAGEDY!

Nonsense! Just read this forum. All router (all EA6xxx) are damaged? Bugs in the Chipset ?
If it is a replacement of all devices!
But linksys certainly will not do it unless it is already a big problem.
    Why? Cash!
    One of many examples:
"If the EA6700 router was already replaced and the replacement unit is having the same issue, I think the cause of this problem is in your network environment. To support that, you installed another router and experience the same issue. It's very unlikely that all 3 units are defective"

  • Ios7, ios8 wifi problem with Linksys WAP54G

I have 4 apple wireless devices (iPad mini, iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone5) in my house.     I have about 8 other wireless devices (non-apple).   I have a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point (on the latest software 3.08.06).
Everything worked just dandy until I upgraded to iOS7.   At that point, all apple wireless devices did the same thing:  After a random amount of idle time,  picking them back up again, they'd be disconnected from the network.   They all claimed they were connected to the wireless network, had an actual valid IP address from the WAP, but would not access the network.   Just spins.    Only solution is to deactivate wireless on the device, and re-activate.   Now works fine until the next random time it drops it again.
I figured this would be fixed in iOS8.  No luck.
All other devices of different types (windows 8 lenovo laptops, Roku boxes, Tivo boxes, Nest thermostat, etc...) ALL have always connected just fine to the wireless network, and the Apple devices USED TO until iOS7.
Clearly they broke something in iOS7, and it is still broken in iOS8.
I realize this is an old WAP, but come on.
anyone else have this issue?    Apple, what did you break and why can't you fix it?
    thanks
    tom

I am in the UK and have one of the fastest fibre optic broadband on the market but have the same issue with my iPad air since downloading ios8. I can no longer watch Netflix and pages close, or just go incredibly slow. Apple are you going to get this fixed. My iPad drops outs of my broadband connection and buffers constantly yet I have no problem with other devices.
    thanks

  • Wifi acting strange on Macbook Pro?

My macbook pro has gotten terribly slow over our home internet recently. i mean very recently. like i would say this started happening on friday at most. On my top floor my wifi has suddenly gotten very slow. I pay for 6mbs with ATT Uverse. On my middle floor [where my router is located] I get normal/decent speed around 5.2-5.8mbs but on the top floor ive started getting around only .2-2mbs . this might be normal except for the fact that ive had uverse for years and this HAS NEVER been a problem. the OTHER thing is that my iphone and ipad on the top floor still get the speed of 4-5.5mbs. My desktop imac which is 3 months old and is located in the same room as the router is also getting very good speeds. the speeds have gotten so bad on my top floor on my macbook i can no longer use the internet and definitely not use youtube. the thing is the slow speeds on my top floor are only affecting my macbook and not my iphone and ipad. my iphone and ipad are still getting 4-5.5mbs on the top floor. i dont have another laptop to test the speed with. i work from my bedroom so i need the wifi to be decent up here which it is not. my macbook pro is around a year old and is running Mountain lion (but i updated a while ago). is the wifi signal on my macbook just getting bad/weak or is it my home internet? i also remember this occurrence when me and my friend were at school (both has same model macbooks) and i was right next to her not getting any wifi signal and she could. help this problem is getting bad and i need internet for school work.
by the way all tests were done through speedtest.net and were run several times to test for consistency
also my PING is the same as it used to be (around 29-31)
and just to stress it, my macbook used to be getting decent speeds like 5.5mbs on my top floor till recently. there has been no additional devices added to my network and my router has not moved, so i have no idea what could cause this problem. please help! thank you!

What version of Mac OS X are you running?
If you live within range of several neighbors with WiFi Routers, you may be getting competition from them. The brute force approach to this is to cycle the power on your Router. When it comes up, it usually sniffs around and assigns itself the lightest-loaded channel.
Some users have had success by setting the WiFi block size to slightly lower than the default 1500 characters -- to say, 1430.
    system preferences > network > WiFi > Advanced > | Ethernet |  Configure: Manually  > MTU : 1430
Then ( Apply ) and close the window to take effect.

  • How do i extend my wifi with a linksys router?

I have a network set up with a time machine extending to 2 separate airport expresses. I am trying to use a linksys router in place of one airport express in order to capture a stronger signal. I can't figure out how to get the linksys to communicate with the time machine without using an ethernet cable. Does anyone know how to do this?

Bob is being polite.. Apple people are like that.. !
I am more the typical nasty windows support person.
    Mate!!
    It will never work..
You haven't got a hope. Apple build their stuff to make sure your wretched Linksys cannot even see the Time Capsule.. (they make confusing names as well. Time Machine being software.. Time Capsule being the box you are talking about).
If you can flash your model Linksys to DD-WRT then you might get it working using universal repeater mode.. but even if it works the stability of it is so poor you will find 30min torture preferable.
You can plug the Linksys into the Express by ethernet.. and use the Linksys in wan bypass mode and extend wireless that way.. although the point of doing what the express is already doing is moot.

  • Linksys WAG320n Installation query

Hi Just brought this today and during setup when the disc is checking for wired adaptor I keep getting an error message to turn off the wireless adaptor, whihc I have done, but still won't recognise the wired.and keeps askingme to turn off all the wireless adaptors.
Any help here would be much appreciated.

If you are still getting that error with the setup wizard then I suggest that you reset  it. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds then turn it off for another 30 seconds then power it back on. Check as well on the laptop if there are any third party firewall softwares installed, like Norton or AVG etc., and make sure to disable it temporaril then you may run the setup wizard again. If it still doesn't work, you can always setup the gateway manually but you need to verify with your internet service provider your internet connection type if it is RFC 2364 PPPoA, RFC 2516 PPPoE, RFC 2684 Routed, IPoA, RFC 2684 Bridged or Bridged Mode Only.
You may also check this link on how to manually configure the gateway:

  • Athereos wifi gives strange "no such device" errors

I've installed madwifi and udev loads the module (ath_pci) automatically on start... But the Network script complains the ath0 doesn't exist when I boot up:
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
Set failed on device ath0 ; no such device.
Error, ath0: ioctl SIOCGIFHWADDR: No such device
Likewise, ifconfig doesn't show ath0 and iwconfig shows no wireless extensions. But I've got the right stuff in rc.conf:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    ath0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0 ath0)
    and in /etc/conf.d/wireless:
    wlan_ath0="ath0 essid MyEssid"
    WLAN_INTERFACES=(ath0)
Also, I don't know if this is part of the problem but lspci tells me this about my wifi:
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. Unknown device 001c (rev 01)
What gives? Is there a known software bug? Is this unsupported hardware, contrary to what I've read about this laptop?
(Hmm, I haven't tried loading it without the country code. I'll see if that works... No, still doesn't work. Bugger.)

  • Airport Express dual signal Wifi oddity Help required please.

I have a 2nd Generation Airport Extreme and a 2nd generation Airport Express.
Both have been reset loaded and reloaded with the latest firmware as of 29/12/2013 to 11/1/2014.
My ISP is Virgin Media UK so I have their wifi router connected to my extreme (with a network cable) and the express is the wifi extender for the extreme.
Their are no issues with either with wifi signal degredation or connectivity.
2 weeks ago I noticed an odd thing with the airport express.
I have a program called iStumbler, the program provides information about nearby Wi-Fi Networks, Bluetooth Devices, etc.
The situation I have is, my Airport Extreme is listed lists the Vendor as Apple and only has one signal output, as expected.
The Airport Express (which is extending the Extreme via wifi) has two signal outputs with two slightly different mac addresses and is not listed as an Apple Device but instead uses the numbers 28-37-37 and has two different Mac Addresses.
Below is an example of what is going on, I have grey out my neighbours signals to show you my network. The locations of the devices are upstairs and downstairs, oddly the location of the second signal (Frequnecy 5500) coming out of the Airport Express is different to the first signal (Frequnecy 2407) of the Airport Express which I also find a little odd. (Across the road according to Google Maps) though not sure the accuracy of this information.
The picture below is just after I hard reset the device and downgraded then upgraded the firmware with 4 different firmware numbers from lowest to highest, which meade no difference to the dual signal.
The Airport Express was set up via the automatic "extend another airport device) mode, then in manual mode. As the Extreme already had security etc. the Express copied the settings. I have, over the years, reset the devices for various drop out issues (neighbours on the same frequencies) or moving home and have also used iStumbler to check networks when setting the kit back up. This is the first time I have seen this issue since about 2 weeks ago. It does not appear to be affecting our network speed at all it's just very odd.
    My questions are:-
    1/ Is this normal?
2/ Would there be a reason why my Airport Express is now not listed as an Apple Device?
3/ Is there anything I can do to fix this if this is not normal?
4/ Any ides how this could have happened if this is not normal?
5/ Should I just take the Express into the genius dude (or dudette) to have the look at it?
Thank you in advance for any information you can throw my way.

    Hi,
I have a time capsule, you would think, good for you. Well it's.
but, i've a question: if I go to finder, -tab sharing:
I see my time capsule and this hp2c768a3a471ewith a picture of an old hp computer. I cannot find it in my network list, to delete it. I cannot delete it at all. somehow it's invisible.
if I click sharing connect, It can't.
what is this hp2c768a3a471e should I be worried or is it a part of time capsule. for the pc dudes?
I'm not a computer expert, but hopefully someone can help me out there.
    Thank you!

Somewhere at sometime you had a HP computer on the network.. perhaps someone with laptop that was visiting.. as a network device it has shown up in the network. It is not doing anything bad.. it will not harm you.. although if you are totally unaware of it.. I would recommend you change your wireless security on the TC.. make sure it is set to WPA2 Personal with a password of 10-20 characters pure alphanumeric mix of upper, lower cases and numerals.
See who screams.. that is the person you just cut off.
If you happen to have a printer with slot for SD card.. it is possible it is your printer.
