Wifi on 4s greyed out...need to back up :(
About 4 months ago, my Apple store kindly replaced my cracked iphone with a new one. the problem is, this new iphone has some issues. It worked fine until after about a month when the phone ran out of battery and when i charged it i discovered the wifi "on/off" button was "greyed out" as people refer to it as being. I serched for hours and tried many solutions to no luck. I then contacted Apple support and the person still didnt know how to fix it. this is a big issue because there are many things i need wifi for most importantly being the ICloud back up. Anyways, i accedentally let the battery drain and the wifi option was back! i quickly backed up my phone and i thought that was a one time thing. however, the phone wasnt picking up any signal from my home wifi so i turned off the phone and turned it back on (seeing if it would hopefully come back on) only to find the wifi was "greyed out" again. this time i did everything and it didint work until about last week. last week the wifi lasted for one day and now it doesnt pick any wifi signal from anything or anywhere. tried connecting it to itunes to see if anything wuld happen and a pop-up told me that my iphone doesnt work on itunes.. it also told me to restore it but i dont want to restore it in case the wifi greys out again.....
...here is the main problem i guess haha... how can i back up my current phone if i cannot get wifi to pick up.I am going to go to the Apple store sometime soon and i should have my back up ready for when i get the newly working phone. but i cant back up without wifi and im hesitant to turn off the phone because i dont want it to grey out again becuase i wouldnt know how to get it working again. Or should i not worry about backing it up but just focus on getting the new phone and just use the last back up from about a month and a half ago. Thank you for reading. any advice would be appreciated. sorry for this post being so everywhere also lol
Hi Joyner12,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your Wi-Fi. The article below gives some troubleshooting steps for this issue:
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
I would suggest you back up your iPhone using iTunes before taking it in to the Apple store. Here's how:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
The article has more details and screenshots, but I've quoted highlights below for you:
iCloud and iTunes can back up most data on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Backed-up information includes purchased music, TV shows, apps, and books*; photos and video in the Camera Roll; device settings (for example, Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts); app data; Home screen and app organization; Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS), ringtones, and more. Media files synced from your computer aren’t backed up, but can be restored by syncing with iTunes.
* Backup of purchased music is not available in all countries. Backup of purchased TV shows occurs only in the United States. Previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
iTunes
How to back up
iTunes can create backups of your iOS device when you:
Sync with iTunes (disabled if you have iCloud backup turned on)
Right-click (or Control-click) the iOS device in iTunes under Devices and choose Back Up
Use these steps to manually back up your iOS device using iTunes:
Connect your iOS device to a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed.
Click the File menu and select Devices > Back up.
Or
Connect your iOS device to a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed.
Open the iOS device's Summary tab. There are two ways to access this. Click the device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper right corner. The device button will then be visible.)From any view in iTunes, click the View menu and select Show Sidebar. Select your iOS device in iTunes under Devices.
Click the Back Up Now button.
To verify that the backup finished successfully, open iTunes Preferences and select the Devices tab. The name of the device will appear along with the date and time the backup was created.
I hope this information helps ....
Have a great day!

Wifi option is greyed out. need fixed ASAP. nuff said. have tried EVERYTHING
My wifi option has been greyed out for the past two weeks. so annoying. Ive tried every option possible, blow drying it, all the restores, resets, turn off turn on.. nothing works. I want this fixed ASAP.
Blow drying it? Did you get it wet?
Have you considered maybe taking it to the Apple Store to have them look at it to determine whether it's a hardware fault? If the hardware failed, you can dance naked around an Oak tree and sacrifice small animals if you like, it still won't fix it. -
The wifi button has greyed out on iphone4s. What to do I have a very distressed daughter here?
Heard about this strange my 4s is fine after updating.

Hi, my wifi button just greyed out a few minutes ago and I can't connect to wifi. Have followed instructions given by Apple support but it's still not working. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks & Happy New Year :-)
First, you don't have a 5+ year old 3GS. The 3GS has only been around for under 4 years. In fact, 5 years ago there were NO iPhones; the original iPhone (2 generations before the 3GS) came out on June 29, 2007 - not quite 5 years ago. The 3GS was released June 19, 2009.
That aside, you can sync multiple phones to one computer - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495. boogeyman is wrong. It is 100% safe to create an additional user name on her computer, log in with that name, and back up the phone. See this for details on what you want to do: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109 -

My iPod updated by itself without a wifi connection. It told me to connect it to iTunes so I did and I updated the software and everything. After it was updated, my wifi button was greyed out and I don't know why. I sent it in to get fixed and the Apple store did NOTHING. I still have about 48 days left on my one year waranty and I don't know what to do to fix the problem. Please, does anyone know how to fix this issue without selling it or replacing it? I've tried all the troubleshooting techniques and nothing is working. Someone help.

Wifi option is greyed out in my phone. Please help me to fix this
Start by working through http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559 and if that doesn't resolve it, some have found it helps to go to Settings and set Airplane Mode ON and Do Not Disturb ON. Power down and wait 5-10 minutes and power up. Got to Settings and set Airplane Mode OFF and Do Not Disturb OFF

TS1398 the wifi bar is greyed out what does that mean?
The wifi bar is greyed out what does that mean?
If that doesn't work:
1. Backup to iTunes (NOT iCloud)—be sure to backup Apps
2. Delete all content
3. Set up as new—don't restore from backup
4. Restore from iTUNES (NOT icloud) backup
5. Then re-add your content. -

It sounds very frustrating that you are unable to use wifi with your iPhone. I do have an article that I would like you to use in order to troubleshoot this, though it sounds as if you have already done some of the steps provided -
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim

Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
Restart your iOS device.
Make sure that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Make sure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
If you still can't turn Wi-Fi on, please contact Apple for support and service options.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Best,

Hi, i am using iphone4s.. 2 days ago i had a problem with wifi.. button greyed out, it was suggested to keep phone in freezer, worked temporarily and i updeted to ios7.1 but still facing same problem.. wht to do? cant afford to throw off :/ huhh..
well, you know how it is - glitches that usually resolve with a hard reset etc
then a restore. then a factory restore....then ..... nothing fixes so I try the next step with apple online - fill out my serial number and find it is a couple of weeks out of date - and then with the holidays who has time to get to the apple store? this is my second 4s handset as it is - first one the glass cracked from L to R without any impact/damage etc - they changed it out automatically because it's a 'known fault' apparently - so technically, this handset is only 6 months old - but warranty is from original purchase date -
never imagined it would turn out to be a warranty issue with the phone - and hey maybe when I get a chance to go to the apple store they'll be sympathetic, but I won't be able to get there till at least Jan 4th as it is. On the other hand, another iOS update might resolve the issue - but how long till that release? at the moment I'm having to use my old 3gs for wifi and 4s for phone!!! -
