Wifi on time capsule not working!

I have a 500g time capsule that i use mainly as a router and the WiFi isn't working. It is connected to the modem in the kitchen along with my moms computer which is running Windows Vista. I connect to it on my iMac 24' with Mac OS X 10.5.7. I was working fine yesterday and this morning, but all of a sudden the connection disappeared. Ive tried restarting my computer, disconnecting the modem, and the TC. Turning both off. Every time I restart the TC the connection will show up my iMac and I try to connect and it says connection timed out and then the connection disappears again.
If anyone has any idea what to do *plz help!!*

Any chance someone was using the microwave oven in the kitchen? Microwaves are a prime source of WiFi interference in most households along with cordless phones.
Is there any way that the TC could be positioned away from the kitchen area?
Assuming the microwave is not the cause of the difficulties, can you temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN ports on the TC? You could try this wireless, but may not be able to connect.
Download iStumbler, www.istumbler.net and open the program to get a look at the signal strength and noise on your wireless network. The program will also display other wireless networks in your area which may be interfering with your network.
Not all networks will be displayed as most modern routers allow users the feature of "hiding" their networks so they cannot be seen. So, it's very possible that another network that you cannot identify may be interfering with your wireless.
Specifically, look for other networks that may be using the same channel or a close adjacent channel as your wireless. If you find this to be the case, proceed as follows:
Open Airport Utility and click on Manual Setup. Click the Wireless tab below the icons to display. Look for your Channel setting and change it to a value that is as far away as possible from other networks. Channels 1-11 are available on most wireless networks, so if you are in a dense area, it may be difficult to find the best settings.

  • Time capsule not working as wireless base station suddenly

I have been using my time capsule as base station for wireless network in our house for some time and suddenly network is not working for all wireless devices in the house.  Desktop imac is connected to internet via ethernet cable through time capsule and works fine so I know problem is not with cable modem or signal coming to house.  Laptops appear to be connected to my network fine but when attempting to connect any site through safari or firefox I just get the spinning wheel thingy.

Check that the laptops are getting DNS and router (gateway) from the TC.. if not reset it and do the setup again.
What OS are you actually running on the laptops.. this problem started with Lion and is much worse in ML.. it is actually not a Snow Leopard issue which you list as the OS.

  • New Air Port Time Capsule Not Working With Old Airport Express

I have been running a home network comprised of a Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) and 5 ea Air Port Express (A1264) for several years with no problem.
The Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) died and I replaced it with an Air Port Time (A1470). Now none of the Air Port Express (A1264) work, all flashing yellow. All other network functions seem to work okay, Time Capsule Backup, Apple TV, Internet …
I am using AirPortUtility 6.3.1 for setup but do not see any way to setup the Air Port Express.

Reset the Express to factory and start over.. they should work.. are you using all 5 in extend wireless mode?
When you reset the Express click on the wifi icon in the top menu area.. and the newly reset AEx will appear in the list.. click it and Airport utility will open and attempt to automagically connect it to the TC.

  • Time Capsule not working as a router

I've done a search, but can't find anything that jumps out to me as the same issue.
I've recently ditched all my PC gear.  Now have the following:
    Mac Mini
    2TB Time Capsule
    MacBook Air
    iPad
My issue is with the internet connectivity of the Time Capsule.  I have the mac mini connected via Ethernet.  It can get on the internet no problem.  None of my wifi devices can at all.  My ISP only allows two devices to ping out, and they need to be registered via MAC address.  No big deal, except my Time Capsule isn't functioning like a router.  So, the MAC address of my Mac Mini is registered, and it's working, but I can't register the Time Capsule.  I'm pretty sure I'm missing something easy, but can't for the life of me figure out what it is.  Figured instead of banging my head against the wall, I'd see if anyone had something similar happen to them?

Register by MAC address to the first device is generally used by cable companies. But the Modem acts as the first port of call and whatever device first is turned on, picks up the public IP address and the MAC is registered. It just works.
Your issue might be that the first device to register has a very long lease. Since you cannot power cycle you should ask the IT admin of the building who controls this setup to release and renew the IP after you plug in the TC otherwise it will not be recognised.. for days or weeks or however long the lease is set to.
    But it could be 24hours.
Plainly you got the Mac Mini working.. how did you do that??
Sometimes you can just try overnight.. remove the Mac and plug in the TC.. but it is far easier to talk to the admin and get him/her to simply renew the lease.
The other method we use is spoof the MAC address of the device currently plugged in. ie grab the MAC address of the Mini and use it in the router.. to pretend it is really the Mini.. the router on the other end is none the wiser.
TC AFAIK, has no ability to spoof, but almost every other broadband router made can do it. Apple designed it for lowest common denominator in terms of networking ability.. to put it mildly.
Note your internet might be already behind a NAT.. if you use the TC or any other router in NAT mode there is an issue of double NAT with every site that requires interactive connection because there is no possible link from the site to your PC by forwarding the port. Double NAT effectively blocks it.
Check the IP you have on the Mini now.. if it is a private address.. ensure it is not 10.0.x.x by the way otherwise the TC will not work due to routing considerations. But any of the private IP address ranges are not routable over the internet and will give you issues.

  • Time Capsule not working as designed sort of

I purchased a Time Capsule a few days from the APPLE Store. I had difficultly setting it up and called APPLE Care. In a short period of time it was up and running. Several days later my nephew noticed that his iMac was no longer connected to the internet. I followed the same sets of instructions and it was connected to the internet. HOWEVER, my older G4 mac used by niece will not acknowledged Time Capsule. In all the windows/menus all the Airport option are GRAYED.
My airport card for my PowerMac G4 733 MHz running 10.4 is a WIFI WIRELESS 802.11b MACINTOSH PCI CARD from AftertheMac. It work fine with APPLE Airport Extreme
My niece is only 5. But my Saturday baby sitter is a teacher by trade and she has children do a lesson on line. So having it function is desirable.
    Noppie

There are a couple of different things that this could likely be: a security issue or the wireless configuration of the Time Capsule.
If the 802.11b card is fairly old, it probably only supports WEP for secure wireless access. If Apple Care had you configure the security on the Time Capsule using WPA/WPA2 or WPA2, then the 802.11b card for your niece may not know how to talk to the network. This would require you to reconfigure the Time Capsule to only use WEP security, so that everyone could connect to it.
If the wireless configuration of the Time Capsule is set up to be 802.11n only, this would also prevent your niece's computer from connecting as it wouldn't even see the network. This would also require you to reconfigure the Time Capsule to handle 802.11b/g/n communications and you may still have to change the security to WEP as mentioned above.
Do any of these sound familiar from your work with Apple Care?

  • Time Capsule not working anymore as extender

    Hello all,
I have had a working wifi network for the past several years utilizing an airport extreme as my base station with my TIme Capsule in the bedroom functioning as my extender. With my old Time Warner Cable modem, everything was working great until TWC made me get a new high speed modem. After I got the new modem from them, the wifi was definitely faster in the living room in front of the Airport Extreme, but I had practically no service in the bedroom even though airport utility said the connection for the time capsule was excellent. I got rid of the TWC modem and purchased a Surfboard SB 6141, and I have the same exact problem. Can anyone tell me why this is not working properly? Is this a common issue? Is there anyway I can see if this is a problem that can be fixed?  If I unplug the TC in the bedroom, my download speeds are much better, but not as fast as in the living room bears the AE.

When you change the modem or main router you need to reboot the whole network.
The particular model you got.. Motorola 6141 happens to be troublesome indeed with the apple routers.
I recommend you simply factory reset both the AE and TC.. you can do both of them the same way.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
I would then take both back to 7.6.1 firmware.
Hold down the option key whilst you select version of firmware in the utility.
Using airport utility reset the names of everything.. use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Use for example name like AEgen4 and TCgenx (fill in the actual gen for x)
Use short wireless names AE24ghz and a different name for 5ghz so you can force the extend to correct band.
    eg AE5ghz
Also try locking the wireless channels.. test on 11, 8, 6 on 2.4ghz and try 36 and 149 on 5ghz.
I also strongly recommend using the v5 airport utility.. it will show you the actual link speeds between the AE and TC. v6 airport utility is a toy version with pretty pictures and no content.
You can see from my set in the centre of the main AP and the extend wireless units on each side.. all of these can be opened at the same time and you can keep track of the links.

  • Time capsule not working with sb6141

Hi! I just installed a new modem, the Motorola SB6141. Since I installed it I have been having problems, whereas everything with my Time Capsule and all my devices (MacBook, MacBook Air, iPhone, iPad mini) was hunky dory and in total function before installing the new modem. I called Time Warner customer service, and they were able to help me via 'renew DHCP lease' while my boyfriend's MacBook was hooked up via ethernet cord. Now that computer is the only one that will accept the wifi through the Time Capsule (I plugged the ethernet cable into the router and left the MacBook only on WiFi). My MacBook air, despite my attempts to 'renew DHCP lease' is still not working. It says it is connected to the Wi-Fi network with the IP address 10.0.1.3. I already tried forgetting the network and re-joining it, restarting everything, etc etc to no avail.
    Help!!!!!!!!

The airport routers do have issues with SB6141 modems.. there is well known issues with lots of posts.. just do a search here for sb6141 or 6121 and you will be amazed.
The Gen4 should work better than gen5 which has the most issues.. but Apple increased the problems with 7.6.4 firmware.
    Downgrade firmware to 7.6.1
You do that by holding the option key when you click version.
Factory reset when you are finished and setup the TC again.. it must be in router mode.. if you fail to get the public IP on the TC wan interface power down the modem for 20min then power it up.. wait 2min and then power cycle the TC and it should pick up the public IP.
No luck replace the modem or the TC.

  • Time Capsule Not Working With Time Machine

I'm trying to backup to my Time Capsule, which I haven't used in over two years. It had been displaced because of a change in internet service providers. The new provider came in with a Linksys router, setup a sub-network, and left the Time Capsule/Airport out of the mix.
So I want to return to using my Time Capsule and have since pulled out the Linksys router, and got the Airport functionality working with the existing, primary network. In other words, the Time Capsule/Airport is working to extend the range of the network.
Problem is this: I cannot backup to the Time Capsule. Even if I'm connecting to the Time Capsule via ethernet, I cannot get it past the 'preparing' phase when running Time Machine. It stays at the phase for what seems to me an inordinate amount of time (30-45 minutes). If I go into System Preferences, the Time Capsule disk doesn't make itself available when using it with Time Machine. If I choose to go into the Star Wars display of Time Machine, I can sort of see the various backups, but I can't roll back to them, and the backup indicator on the right looks sort of ghosted, like it's there but it's not there.
How do I know if the disk within the Time Capsule is failing? Could that be what's going on? How would I test it? I get a green light on the front of the TC, but not everything is hunky dory since I'm not able to backup.
Is part of my problem that I'm using a not up-to-date version of Airport Utility? –I'm using 5.4.2

Oh and here it is, on this page, Section D, #1:

  • HT1175 3TB time capsule not working with new iMac

I have a 3TB time capsule that's c. 2 years old. It worked perfectly with my old iMac. I bought a new 27" one when it came out this year and since the time capsule will not work.
I had to clear all the data as a starter. Now it gets a little into the backup taking c. 1 day then resets. It's connected via ethernet cable and has been told to join an existing network.
Currently it says it's backing up 922,498 items, after 2 hours (this is the third attempt, it resets then has no record of the old backup) it says 10kb of 789.44 GB - About 4,664,440 days remaining!!
To clarify I'm trying to use Time Machine with the Time Capsule.
    Please help!!

You have made a mistake in the setup.
You do not "Join an existing networking" and use ethernet.. they are mutually exclusive.
What you are doing is backing up over double hop wireless which is slowing to a crawl.
You need to put the TC into bridge mode.. and plug it into the main router by ethernet. Then use wiretess to the TC if you are too far away or ethernet if you are close by..
As soon as you put the TC into join a wireless network it deactivates the ethernet.

  • Yosemite and Time capsule not working?

I just started using Yosemite on my mac book pro laptop and my mac desktop. Time machine has been fine on my desktop with my external drive which is plugged into the computer. I had no problem with new backups. But, I can't get time machine to work with my laptop and time capsule. I have another external cloud drive as well, and it will not work with that one now either. First, I can no longer just open up my backups from the folders in the finder like I used to be able to. instead all I see is a disk image with my back up and when I click on it I can not open it and get an error message (see below). Also, it will not back up at all, it give me the other error message in this picture. What is going on here? I am so frustrated. I may just have to go to the genius bar but this is so frustrating.
I also can't even access my back ups now from before even if I go in through the finder window and select the hard drive the back up do to go very far back. Only a few days. I am worried that somehow all of my backups are gone but am hoping that is not the case. It all worked fine before I installed Yosemite. I would appreciate any help or guidance.
For the first image, if I try to back up to time capsule I get the exact same message except it says could not back up to the name of my time capsule drive.

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't what you want to hear. I know that Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • Time capsule not working properly after moving to a new house

    Hello,
I have a macbook pro and a refurbished time capsule 2tb. I purchased both in 2013 and the time capsule at that time was used as both a wireless router for our house and my back up.I recently moved and didn't have access to the time capsule for over a month. Once I settled into the new house I plugged the power cable and internet connection into the time capsule and assumed that automatically it would keep working. It appears that it is backing up my system as I can pull up the application and see appropriate in-time documents however it consistently has a slow orange light blinking. I am not currently using it as a router as we have xfinity and have a different router for the house and when I try to use the time machine instead it cannot connect.
My internet connection is fine and I would like to leave it as is. It also appears the back up function is working for my mac. The question is, does the orange blinking light matter and or is it indicating that I am improperly using the machine? It it because the ethernet cable is attached and can the time capsule work without this?
I have tried resetting the capsule with the 10seconds hold on the reset button etc as seen on other posts but the orange light remains.
    Thoughts?
Thank you for your time and assistance,
    ahahn063

The question is, does the orange blinking light matter and or is it indicating that I am improperly using the machine?
The amber light is like the "Check Engine" light in your car. It blinks for a reason......the Time Capsule has a message for you.
That message might be that there is a firmware update available for the Time Capsule that needs to be installed....or....that AirPort Utility has detected that the Time Capsule is not configured correctly to work with the Xfinity router that you are now using.
To see the message.....open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the amber dot
Then look for a Status setting, and click on the small amber dot there
A message will appear to tell you why the Time Capsule is whining, along with a suggested action to fix the issue.
If you are still having difficult, we for you to post back with the exact message that you see.

  • New Time capsule not connecting to wifi, New Time capsule not connecting to wifi

I just got a 2T time capsule, and it picked it up on the wifi the first time, and I went through and clicked what I wanted for it, but now it's not getting picked up on the wifi.  It's about as useful as a brick right now.
I'm on an imac and I just want to use it for backup, and not a router.  I want to do half for time machine backup, and then half for movie files to access from the time Capsule on my iMac.

Are you using join a wireless network on the TC?? This is a mess..
Please describe the whole existing networking.. and how you are trying to fit the TC into it.

  • Time Capsule not working after a restore

I recently had to restore from my TM/TC backup after a standard software update made it so I could no longer log into my account. Now, my TC is not working properly. I can still access all of my past updates on mu TC, but it is not working for making new backups. Instead of backing up the new files, TM wants to do a whole new backup from scratch (all 140 gigs). Worse still, it is unbelievably slow (as in it took over 3 hours just to do 1 gig last night on my wireless.)
If I can still access all my old files on the TC and I restored my Mac using the TC files, why is it that TM wants to start an entire new backup now instead of continuing to update the original one? And, why is the updating crawling along at such a terribly slow speed. Any thoughts/proposed solutions to this very much appreciated.

I found this article which describes a fix:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
I'm testing it on my Time Capsule now, I'll let you know how it goes.

  • Time Capsule not working!

I have an iMac about 3 years old. I have a time capsule about the same. I have Mountain Lion. The Time Capsule keeps wanting to back up 33.44 GB of something. Is says the oldest backup was in April 26, 2012. What do I need to do to get it working?
    Thank you
    Carl

Mountain Lion seems to generate ghost disks.. I am not sure why but they might or might not delete.
I guess my method would be to start over.. use a better name..
Short no spaces pure alphanumeric. Not "Carl's Time Capsule"
    You can put CarlTC
After you make the change reboot everything.. modem router TC client computers. To make sure you have fresh new view of the network.. then delete all the old names.
Redirect TM to the new name.. but the change will not affect the backup which is stored and TM should be able to pick it up and continue.

  • Time Capsule not working after last software update

I bought my time capsule 3 weeks ago. Set up and worked like a charm (I use airport express for my wireless network). After I downloaded the latest software updates a week or so ago, I got a message that my computer could no longer recognize my time capsule. Since then the time capsule light only flashes amber and wont appear in airport utility.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I was having problems with the 7.3.1 firmware as well. For me, in manifest as though the internal disk had went bad--a blinky amber light and a "Disk needs repair" error. Rolling back the firmware solved it for me.
    To do this:
    --Open AirPort Utility.
    --Click on your TC.
--Click on the "Manual Setup" button.
--When the configuration summary pops up, click on the word "Version".
--From the "Upload" drop-down list that is on the new pane that pops up, select "7.3", and click "Ok".
--Once it reboots, it'll be at 7.3.
Hope this helps. I'll be waiting a few weeks after 7.3.2 comes out to upgrade. I'm not real impressed with 7.3.1. As far as I can tell, it broke more than it fixed.
