Wifi options limited by bios

I regret that I was not an informed consumer when I purchased the Lenovo u430 (US).  I expected I could replace the Intel 7260-N with an Intel 7260-AC wifi card.
I was very disappointed when I received a BIOS message telling me an unauthorized wireless card was installed.
Will Lenovo release a BIOS update to allow at least an Intel 7260-AC wireless card in my Lenovo u430?
I would think twice about buying another Lenovo laptop, and have informed others that may not be hip to the limitations built into these laptops.
Thanks for any response that answers the question: will a BIOS patch be released to at least allow Intel 7260-AC swaps?

Lenovo will never release a BIOS without a whitelist: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/General-Discussion/WWAN-and-wireless-card-BIOS-whitelists-Lenovo-COME-ON...
If you hacked the BIOS to remove the whitelist, you will void warranty if something goes wrong with your laptop or if you bricked your laptop because you flashed a hacked BIOS.
I'll help you out buying a Dual Band Wi-Fi that the U430 touch will accept without hacking your BIOS.
From the U430 touch manual, http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=UM018443, here are the approved list of WLAN on pg 78 / 89 of the manual:
12 WLAN WiFi 2x2 BGN+BT4.0 Intel 7260BN 2x2BN+BT PCIE HMC WLAN
20200412 N
12 WLAN Non-Intel Wifi 2x2 ABGN+BT 4.0 combo Cbt BCM943228HMB 2x2ABGN+BT4.0 HMC WLAN
20200221 N
12 WLAN Non-Intel Wifi 2x2 ABGN+BT 4.0 combo Liteon WB222 2x2ABGN+BT4.0 HMC WLAN
20200225 N
12 WLAN WiFi 2x2 BGN+BT4.0 Intel 7260BN 2x2BN+BT PCIE HMC WLAN
20200412 N
12 WLAN Intel Wifi 2x2 BGN(tech ready) Intel 2200N MOW M PCIE NB HMC WLAN
20200048 *
You can see that the the 2nd Wi-Fi card on the list is a dual band capable card.
If you decide to purchase that ABGN+BT 4.0 combo Cbt BCM943228HMB 2x2ABGN+BT4.0 HMC WLAN, you must purchase a Wi-Fi card with FRU P/N stamped on the card itself. See this picture below:
Spoiler (Highlight to read)
According to wikipedia list of Wi-Fi cards, the FRU P/N for that card is 04W3763. http://wikidevi.com/wiki/Lenovo_04W3763_(Foxconn_T77H365.01)
Just make sure that when you purchase the card, you have that "FRU P/N: 04W3763" stamped on the card since the generic versions of those cards will not work.
Here's one seller that sells this card: http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/IBM-NEW-WIRELESS-ADAPTER/2982553.aspx They require you to call in order to order, but that seller, CDW, is a reputable seller of many laptops and tablets.

  • Wireless sync option not available on Itunes 10.5.  After updating my iphone to IOS 5, the "sync over wifi" option is not being displayed in itunes.

hi, I managed to update both Itunes and my ios to the latest versions (10.5 and 5 respectively).  I'm unable to see the "Sync over wifi" option in itunes.  Can anyone help?

Maybe that's why I got lucky?  I have 10.7.2.  I have to tell you howeer that I did not check any check box in settings on the Notebook to enable Wifi sync, or in iTunes on the notebook.  I did have options when setting up the iPad and I selected sync with computer rather than back up to cloud.   Maybe that is another difference?  I feel feel fortunate that as I type this my iPad is syncing over wifi and you're all having trouble.
Just to confirm I have iTunes 10.5  MacOSX 10.7.2 and iOS5 installed on the iPad.  I'm going to dive in and do the phone now too.  I will report any troubles, or pay more careful attention when the iCloud settings and set up come on the screen.  Maybe I did something else I don't remember.

If these don't work you may have a hardware problem. Visit an Apple store for an evaluation or contact Apple Support.

If a restore did not fix it, you have a hardware issue--possible bad wi-fi radio.

  • Wifi options - is there much difference?

I currently have a "g" wireless setup in my home, perhaps someday I'll get the "n" version. I'm trying to configure a T400 and there are four options that allow for "g" and "n" data rates:
    ThinkPad WiFi (BGN)
Intel WiFi Link 5100 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology
Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology
Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology
Is there any special reason why the Intel WiFi Link versions will give me anything special with my plain-jane wireless router or the ones I'm likely to encounter at airports or hotels?
Also, if I want to play with NetStumbler or similar software, is one wifi option better than the others?
    Thanks!

While I am not sure what the ThinkPad WiFi is (maybe an Atheros based chipset?), the three different Intels offered are actually different despite the similar names.
The 5100 uses a two antenna design and can offered up to a 300mbps raw bandwidth.
The 5300, on the other hand, uses three antenna, and thus can offer up to a 450mbps raw bandwidth.
The last one is simply the addition of WiMAX onto the card.
If you are simply looking for a card that connects well with your router and/airports/wireless APs, then I recommend that you get the Intel WiFi Link 5300 - in my experience, it has very good range and can detect wireless networks fairly well at weak signals. (Most airports / access points only use Wireless B/G)
I wouldn't expect anything "special" with the card when used with your router though, since the card will just default back to 802.11g mode. You might get better range when using this card, however...
Lastly, NetStumbler does not work when you are running Windows Vista Intel drivers - not sure about other chipsets, but if you are running Vista with Intel cards install - NetStumbler won't play very well with it... While you can try running XP drivers under Vista - things tend to crash if you try that.
As for "similar software", it depends on what you are trying to run...
I hope I answered some of your questions.

  • IPhone has no wifi option, only WLAN

Under Setting in my iphone 4 (in China), I have no wifi option, only WLAN.  And the WLAN is not picking up any of the wifi networks that my husbands wifi picks up fine.  His phone has an option for wifi instead of WLAN.  Software update says I'm up to date, have tried restarting it a number of times.  What should I do?

Did you setup the iPhone or a store/carrier, etc?
Do you have very much material or content added to the iPhone?
If you have not added much if anything, and are comfortable resetting up the iPhone, an option is to go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings so the iPhone is back to factory, pristine condition and then set it all up again.  Unless there is something strange with this iPhone or the iOS on it, that should revert to the Apple iOS build.
But first, have you tried going to that sequence and selecting Reset Network Settings instead of the full erase?

  • Hi, why wifi option dosnt seen in personal hotspot in ios5

hi, why wifi option dosnt seen in personal hotspot in ios5

This worked for me on iPhone 5, iOS 8.1.2.
For some reason I need to turn the personal hotspot off twice, maybe because my iPad was connected.
When I turned the Personal Hotspot on with WiFi off I was prompted whether I wanted to turn WiFi on or just use BlueTooth or USB.
It's good to have both options. In a public place I'd prefer Bluetooth. In my office where I'm streaming to a BlueTooth speaker I prefer WifFi. Phone can't handle streaming and hotspot if hotspot data usage is too high.

Be aware that, if these don't work, you may have a hardware problem with your iPhone.

  • Wifi option disappeared from system preferences network tab

I used wifi at home in the morning, with no problem. I used ethernet during the day at work. When I got home, wifi wasn't working. At first, it was still an option in the Network tab of System Preferences (along with Ethernet, Firewire & Bluetooth PAN). When I clicked on 'Assist Me,' and started the process, I wasn't able to give the information needed. When I clicked 'Go Back' until I got to the main Network screen, the 'WiFi' option was no longer present. It is also not an option with I click on the "+" button to add a network option. In addition, on the top bar, the WiFi icon is greyed out, with an 'X' in it. Clicking on it shows: "WiFi: No Hardware Installed."
To add to the fun, when I called Apple Support, he had some resets in mind to try, but my computer will not stay off. Clicking 'Shut Down,' turns it off, but then right back on. Holding the power button turns it off, but he had me unplug the power for a minute, then plug it back in. When I do plug back in, it restarts again, on its own.
Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

In many cases, this issue is caused by a hardware fault. A short circuit or a microscopic break in a solder joint may open and close depending on temperature, making the failure intermittent.
Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. If you can connect to the Internet via Ethernet, Bluetooth, or a USB network device, make sure all available OS X updates are installed. If Wi-Fi is your only means of network access, skip this step.
    2. Reset the NVRAM.
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. Start up in Recovery mode. In the menu bar of the OS X Utilities screen, there's a Wi-Fi menu. If it works, selectInstall OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
    5. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • How to disconnect airport wifi option on timecapsule? can s.o. walk me thru the process?

Need to disonnect airport wifi option from timecapsule, keeping timecapsule as back-up. How to route from modem to iMac, to include timecapsule and printer?

All you need to do is bridge the TC.. you don't need to turn off the wireless as once in bridge it will direct wifi to the modem correctly.
If you are really on Leopard as your profile there suggests.. just open the airport utility. Manual setup.
    Go to the internet tab.
Down the bottom .. connection sharing.
    Select off, bridge mode.
    Update the TC.
Then you can go to the wireless tab in the main airport section and change it to off.. or simply set it to a different channel manually and that will give you 5ghz access for other clients which the present modem is unlikely to do.

  • Why is my WIFI option greyed out!? 4S

Last week I had my iPhone 4S replaced because my wifi option greyed out and the battery life started to drain really fast. 8 days later it's the exact same problem. What's happening here? I bought the phone 11 months ago!!! Up to date software, reset network settings. I have spoke with several other people with the same problem. I expected more from an expensive apple product...
    Please help me Apple! Thanks

Your replacement should have a minimum of a 90 day warranty, if replaced by Apple.
If you've followed all of the steps in the troubleshooting article, and your replacement device is still having wi-fi greyed out, then get the device replaced.
