Wifi or 3g...why

If the iphone, I'm new to this, has data service with unlimited access, then why would I use a wifi? Thanks.

Because wi-fi access is faster, and between accessing the internet via wi-fi and 3G if you are in a 3G network coverage area, wi-fi access isn't as much of a battery drain as 3G access.
Some people live in an area where AT&T's 3G network isn't available. Since you are in a 3G network area, try turning 3G access off to compare the internet connection speed with EDGE vs 3G.

My MacAir cannot see the same WiFi router twice, why?
So if it gets connected to a WiFi then gets disconnected for any reason, I cannot reconnect it to the same WiFi again as it cannot see that specific router again.
Unless, in my case, I turn on my Galaxy note 10.1 Tethering hotspot which it sees ALL the time then the Wifi router shows again so I can reconnect to it.
This happens at home and at work and at any other place... so No, there is no problem with my router or WiFi connection.
it is really getting to my nerves.
the whole purpose of me getting a MacAir is the light weight!
Now I have to carry my Galaxy Note 10.1 around with me, especially if I am going out, so I can get connected to WiFi!!
    Can anyone help me out!

Try the following on your MBP, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
In the windows on the left side: Select login for Keychains and "All Items" for Category.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

  • I'm having trouble connecting to apps, itunes store, internet on my iPhone 5 running iOS 7.0.4.  I am currently connected to a perfectly running WiFI connection.  Why am I not able to connect anything?  I've tried ALL the fixes suggested.  HELP!!!!!!!!!

I'm having trouble connecting to apps, itunes store, internet on my iPhone 5 running iOS 7.0.4.  I am currently connected to a perfectly running WiFI connection.  This just started happening today (2/19/14)!  Why am I not able to connect anything?  I've tried ALL the fixes suggested.  HELP!!!!!!!!!  BTW, I know my Wi-Fi connection is good because I'm using it on my desktop and other people in my office are also connected on their iPhones and desktops.  Again, HELP!!!!

You may not really be connected to your WiFi network.
Your router may not have given your iPhone a valid IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the "i" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPhone (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

  • My ipad does not want to connect to my home wifi's, worthless. why has this just happened. is apple aware?

In the last 2 days my Ipad does not want to connect to the internet via my home wifi's i have not done anything different so cany understand why this is happeniong. it just wont connect. Its a good job i have my 3g connection otherwise it would be worthless. i have tried resetting my wifi connections on my pad and unplugging the modem and resetting that. nothing is working. i have read several forums about this and seems to be an issue with a lot of ipads, i have read what you can do, however i dont think i should have to reset this, reset that, change this and change that when clearly its an apple issue.
can someone provide me with any simple way of fixing this issue. or can apple spend a little bit of their millions of dollars of profit to fix this little proble.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Ipad keeps  coming on and  online, even though I have it shut off and  wifi shut off, why is this and how can I stop it?  After shutting it off,  sometimes   10 minutes,  or hours later it comes back on, even when not using it

When my Ipad has been disconnected from wifi and  shut off, it keeps  coming back on and online.  It can happen in 10 minutes, or hours later,  happens  irregulary.  Have noticed when it happens, I get nofications  from facebook of  comments and or posts..  I can switch the wifi off,    switch the iPad off and  then set it beside me,  hour later it dings, i have  noficiations of  face book things, and its online again.. why is this and how can I stop it from happening?

Yes, I went to settings and turned wifi off.  Thought at first I wasnt letting it set for a sec or two before shutting the iPad off.  so now I wait like a minute or two  before shutting the iPad down.  didnt  seem to help.  Tried  actually logging out of  facebook when I was  done with it,  worked for about  4 days, and now it has started  coming on and coming online again,,  I  went through my notifications and  shut things off,   Well  see if it works.  thank you.

  • Why i can't receive sms from my wife iPhone4 ?, why i can't receive sms from my wife iPhone4 ?

why i can't receive sms from my wife iPhone4 ? we both have iphone 4 with different account.

If the music on your wife's computer was purchased using a different iTunes account than the one your phone is signed into, the music won't transfer.  You can only have iTunes content from one account on the phone at a time.
You can set up Home Sharing where you can stream your wife's music to your phone but only when the phone is connected to your local WiFi network

  • HT1349 I have a laptop computer with Windows 7, powered intel core i7. I am trying to download a  purchased movie from ITunes. I am on wifi g.  Why is it taking 17 hours to download a simple movie? This is nuts!

Question:  Why when downloading a purchased movie from ITunes does it take 8 to 17 hours to download?  I have an HP Laptop with Windows 7 using a core processer i7.  This is the second day to try to get the movie downloaded and I still cannot watch this movie.  Seems like a problem with ITunes or a scam. I use a IPhone 4 with little issues, But when using this lap top -- it is a joke.

First thing to do is get the CC off your system.  Then try the direct download option linked below...
You can download the trial version of the software thru the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site and have cookies enabled in your browser or else the download will not work properly.

  • Why do my 5c and 5s use data when I am on WiFi? And why does it show up in regular intervals of 6 hours? Very strange.

I am really having problem controlling the data usage. It seems that iPhone 5c and 5s both use data when wifi is available. And plus, the data seems to be dumped all at once every 6 hours most of the time. I know I am neither uploading nor downloading 140MB over data at 7am. DOes anyone know how to control this?
I switched off almost all background data usage (except messages). I am not on facebook etc. What is going on?

Thanks for trying Jay's suggestion, zole. The iPhone should still be able to use WiFi to send and receive iMessages. By design though, Apple devices will turn off WiFi when the phone goes dormant (screen turns off) so if you are in the midst of downloading something or a new message comes in, the phone will be using the available mobile data by default.  You can turn cellular data on or off for individual applications http://vz.to/1IuZJIM instead of completely shutting off the cellular data. In that same section, you can see what applications may be using more cellular data than others to go into that specific app for settings (for example, if Facebook is using a lot of data, go into the application's settings and make sure the video autoplay is turned to WiFi only).

I was at the airport in Atlanta and could not connect to the public wifi.  I chose that one and the next page had no other info or entry...help!

Airport wifi sometimes requires you to sign up/create an account and then usage is sometimes limited for a certian amount of time. Its also not always free, even though it may be listed as public. If directs you to another page, then there should be other instructions on how to procede.

  • I am trying to update my ipad from iOS 4.3.5 to 6.1.3. 6 hours ago it said 49 hours and now says 53 hours. I am using a wifi connection. Why is this taking so long? at this rate i really don't see any progress. Please help!

You have to connect the iPad to your computer to update.
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • Excelent signal streangth - No connectivity to WiFi...Why?

I traded in my iPod touch and picked up a new iPad mini 2 weeks ago (11-7-2012).  for the first week the Wi Fi was perfect for lack of a better word.  All of the 6 ussual routers I used on my day to day connected with great streangth and speed.  over the last week i have had increasing loss of connection even though I have excelent signal streangth.  At most not only my home router will connect for 30 second incroments.  The only router that will connect is at my local apple store.  This tells me that all of the fixes I have tryed as well as going to the Apple store to get my firmware updated was useless.  I have reset all the settings, reflashed done every router trick in the book, with no moble USB3 hardrives around.  I have erased Safarai cache and cookie cache. I have a feeling it is either software or firmware issue.  any ideas????

  • Retina display MBP has extremely slow wifi... why?

Here's the scenario for my wifi issues with my mbp retina display. I have a regular 20Mb/s down Time Warner connection that I've been using for 2 years. My roommates' computers as well as my older 2010 MBP never had slow connectivity issues. The things I'm experiencing on my MBP now are:
    - extremely slow speeds where even Google.com fails to load at times, streaming videos buffer every 15 seconds, I can't play diablo 3 anymore because it keeps giving me a time-out message (lol), my instant messenger times out so I have to reconnect.
I tried to diagnose my issue but going to any speedtest shows that my connection has a download speed of 20Mb/s which makes sense and probably has nothing to do with the slow/dc issue.
As of now, the only temporary remedy is to disconnect my wifi and reconnect (every 10-15 minutes), and I'm pretty sure no one would be content with this fix.
Is there any other diagnosis tool that I can use here to see what's going on? Anyone else have this issue?
(I've updated my software to the latest updates).
    Thanks.
(... wow even as I submit this post, my connection timed out. Luckily this forum saves my last version of the post so whew)

I'm also having the same issue. The applecare folks acted like they've never heard about it (seriously?) and had me do some stupid things like deleting all the other networks out of the list but the one I was using (she actually tried to tell me that the computer would be "confused" by 5 computers in my known network list).
I just took it to the genius bar, and they ran diagnostics on it, and it's working just fine. In their store, using their network, I was getting 12 mbps. At my mom's house (who doesn't pay for the fastest speeds), I was getting 9 mbps. Here at my house, where every other computer (including my 2007 macbook) is getting 20 mbps, I am getting LESS THAN ONE.
My shiny new computer is completely unusable. It has nothing to do with bluetooth. It has something to do with an incompatibility with the new router my husband bought two days ago (Linksys E1200). Before that, I think it was okay. I am going to have him switch back to the old router and see if that solves anything.
But SERIOUSLY, Apple? I'm about to send it back, too. I am VERY disappointed. Oh, and when the wireless radio is going nuts, my battery life suffers tremendously. I am getting nowhere near 7 hours. More like 2. And that's with bluetooth turned off, and the screen dimmed.
Oh, and an addition, I am running Mountain Lion. My computer just arrived last Monday. I've already installed all system updates. I even had them re-install Mountain Lion at the Apple Store. I think my little Betsy is going to have to be replaced. :-(
