Wifi problem - not connecting

Hi, I bought my ipod touch in december in Canada. Currently I'm living in Holland. I didnt use my ipod in Canada. Since moving here I've tried to connect to my wifi network (2 laptops are connected and working fine) and it says its connected but nothing will open up. Safari say's it "cant open the page because it cant find the server". The same thing for youtube.
I'm not sure if the ipod itself is not working right or if it could be the fact that it was purchased in North America and the settings are different for Europe. If anyone has any idea of what the problem could be please let me know. Thanks

First of all let me say that my ipod touch works great with WEP 64 bit, 128 bit, or WPA but I couldn't get it to work with WPA2 but I don't care. It has also consistently worked at home. However I went to 10 internet cafes over vacation last week and 2/3 of them wouldn't work including 'hard rock cafe'. My suggestion to the waiter to turn off and on the wireless router was not well received.
In all cases the problems were with wifi's that had passwords. the waiter would usually write the passowrd on a napkin. I would enter the password and get the checkmark indicating connection but safari reported 'no server'. Entering the wrong password gave me a connection error and no checkmark by the wifi network.
I also noted that there was an ip address and gateway but the other information (dns, router) were blank. Also the ip address looked wrong as it wasn't a private address. I think it was 162.254.x.x which made no sense to me - usually it's 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x. So I suspect dhcp wasn't working. It was frustrating as there were often people with laptops all around me clearly checking email and watching youtube videos and such. I tried manually setting the router and dns address to x.x.x.1 but no help.
Also when I went back to cafes that worked before they would always work again. It was consistent. When I went to cafes that didn't work the first time they still didn't work. Something is seriously wrong with ipod touch wifi.
Comments on earlier posts - changing the ssid fixed many people's problems. This means the ipod database has some setting associtated with that SSID that is messed up. Too bad clicking 'forget this network' doesn't wipe all entries from the database like it should!
Also another comment on earlier posts - an apostrophe may be part of the issue as this character is used in SQL and it is possible that the ipod uses a SQL database to store wifi connection information.

Same here.... No fix. Replacing is the option apparently and if you're out of warranty, you're SOL. That was as per the "Genius" at Apple.

  • Bought a new Ipod touch and the WiFi does not connect.  Tried Reset and total Restore, does not connect to Router on DHCP, tried Static manually and still can not get it to connect even though it registers as connected.

Bought a new Ipod touch and the WiFi does not connect.  Tried Reset and total Restore, does not connect to Router on DHCP, tried Static IP, Subnet, Router and DNS manually and still can not get it to connect even though it registers as connected.  Using Airport for router, latest firmware, no problems with Iphone 4 or Macbook Pro or any other internet devices.  After total Restore (factory settings) tried again, showed connected to router, but does not display "check" next to router but little rotating icon even though the wifi range signal shows connected at full strength and it says it is connected.  Just can't seem to get it to generate an IP.  Any solutions other than turning it on and off again?  Not a Merry Christmas morning.

Ok, so, a couple of things:  Denisefromwaleska and I have the exact same size/type/color iPod.  Now wishing I'd bought the black one maybe...
Second, Airport is an Express and I have a second one that I carry with me when I travel.  Tried to connect my Airport Express to the internet and could not although the iPod did recognize the router and tried to connect to the internet for some time, unlike my previous problem.  Updated firmware on my travel router, still could not connect to the internet.  Going to try to set up a manual Static IP on the travel router here in a few and conect through it although I predict the problem will persist. Back on the Christmas Present Airport Express router, it is back in play and working fine for all devices save the iPod.
Thanks again for all your help, hopefully I can get a solution in place soon,

  • Since I upgraded to Moutain Lion I'm dealing with wifi problems : no connection or random connection

Since I upgraded to Moutain Lion I'm dealing with wifi problems : no connection or random connection. With  OS X Lion wifi was OK.

So, Darrall, it seems to be fixed.  Mind you, this has happened through a seemingly unrelated, but hopefully replicable sequence of events.  You be the judge.
I went to my other login account, which as it happens is also an admin account.  Voila, the secondary click worked fine.  So I returned to my primary account, where I did the following:
First, I unpaired the trackpad.  then I remembered I needed something to move the mouse with, so I re-paired the magic mouse I'd had before.  I thought I'd turned off the trackpad, but apparently not, so the computer re-paired it automatically. None of this had any immediate effect, as you'd imagine.
Then I went to Mission Control in Preferences. There, I deselected "Show dashboard as a space", and in the hotcorners, I deselected Mission Control from the bottom left, where it had been. I didn't replace it.
Now, my secondary click works. Uh huh. I was suspicious that it might have more to do with Mission Control and/or Dashboard than the trackpad, only because I'd beaten that horse till my arm hurt and this was all I could think of.
Never did I imagine this would get fixed short of creating a new login account and somehow copying everything - since I didn't know what was wrong, I could easily have copied the error too - so I'm very pleased and relieved.  If you haven't fixed yours yet, try this.  Let me know what happens!

How do i restore my wifi setting back to the factory settings? I have changed it somehow :/ and now my wifi will not connect. My Airport is on and showing full strength but will not connect.

Ok, if other devices are connecting but just not your MacBook then let's start troubleshooting the MacBook to possibly find out why.
Please try each of the following, in order, until hopefully resolved:
Note the following are excerpts from an OS X Daily article.
    * Turn Airport on & off – You can do this via the Airport menu bar or from the Network Preferences. This is the first thing you should try when troubleshooting Mac wireless problems.
    * Make sure Wireless/Airport card software & firmware is up to date – This is usually done just by going to the Software Update menu, if there are any updates available for your Mac or Airport, install them.
    * Delete and recreate connection – Try deleting and recreating/reestablishing the wireless connection, sometimes a setting can be corrupted and this may fix it.
    * Create a new Network Location – Similar to the above suggestion, try creating a new and different wireless network location to see if it resolves the connection problems.
    * Change DHCP auto settings to manual – sometimes there is a problem with the DHCP server, and if you manually set an IP address on the network you can be fine. Remember to set the IP to a high number so it wouldn’t interfere with other DHCP machines. As long as you have the subnet mask, router, and DNS settings configured manually as well, this shouldn’t be a problem.
    * Flush the DNS cache – Launch the Terminal and enter the following command onto one full line within the Terminal: dscacheutil -flushcache
    * Zap the PRAM – Reboot your Mac and hold Command+Option+P+R during restart until you hear another chime, let the Mac boot as usual.
    * Delete Wireless Config files – Delete com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist and com.apple.internetconfig.plist files from ~/Library/Preferences and reboot
    * Trash your home directories SystemConfiguration – Remove all files within ~/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ and then reboot your Mac.
    * Reset your Mac’s System Management Controller (SMC) – For MacBook and MacBook Pro’s: Shutdown the MacBook/Pro, remove the battery, disconnect the power, hold the Power Key for 15 seconds. Replace the battery, reconnect power, and zap the PRAM and wait for 2 chimes before letting the keys go. Let boot as usual.

  • WiFi does not connect whilst Time Machine backup occurs at startup

This is a problem I've had since the beta test session and does not seem to have been fixed.
If I shut down the computer in the middle of a backup or a backup strats immediately on opening the lid of my computer (MBA late 2010), the WiFi does not connect. If I am patient, eventually the backup will terminate and I can then connect. My router is a Time Capsule, and all software is up to date.
I don't recall having this problem with Snow Leopard.

You can't - once posted in a particular discussions area, that is where it remains - unless a moderator moves it to the appropriate area, or a more appropriate area.
You start here, and then narrow your choice down to the appropriate discussions area.
    http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa?categoryID=1
Since you are running Leopard, go to the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard area, and below this category is a Time Machine discussions area.

worksafe's link with the KeyChain fix is good.
This usually happens when KeyChain has two entries for the same WiFi network.
If repair did not work you can follow the manual steps:
    Disconnect WiFi
Open KeyChain from Applications / Utilities and find your WiFi network entry(ies) and delete all of them.
    Connect to your WiFi again.

  • 3g does not work while WiFi says not connected

You would think that if WiFi was "not connected" >< it would automatically switch to the 3G connection. But it never ever ever ever works unless I turn the WiFi off. Then it works fine. The WiFi works fine when I am in range of hotspots/home access points FYI.
Basically it is extremely annoying. Anyone else experience this?
    I have the Regular 3G from 2008.

"Not connected" doesn't necessarily mean not connected. You can be connected to a Wi-Fi network, in which case you'd see the Wi-Fi icon, but not have the proper login/proxy to access the internet via the Wi-Fi network you are connected to. So, you are 'connected' to the Wi-Fi network, but not connected to the internet.
If you have previously joined 'common' networks (e.g. HPsetup, etc.), your iPhone may automatically connect to them, even though you cannot use them.
