  • Beware the Security Update - How I fixed my WIFI problem and a question

First of all I have read the "Latest Update from 21 January is A Disaster" thread and I basically agree with Andrew is Stuck so please don't feel the need repeat any of the stuff about it is not a bug in the update etc etc and I should have a Super Duper clone to hand etc etc . I have read that stuff. You are probably right but they should write on the Security Update info panel - "Be Careful this could really ruin your day".
I am ****** off and stressed out and I need to rant and I am not looking for that kind of lecture - even if it is partially or wholly true. I need to feel positive by warning people the way I wish I had been warned!
NB I am near the end of a professional dance tour as Musical Director running music on Logic on my MBP and it has been working fantastic - not a single glitch in 6 weeks. I would never upgrade my OS or Logic in the middle of job like this BUT Security Updates have always seem like something you should install because they will protect the Mac or protect against any new viruses etc. I have never had a problem with them before. (THAT ATTITUDE WILL NOW CHANGE!!!)
This update has caused a lot of people a lot of problems (check out this forum) and it has caused me more real world problems than anything I have downloaded and installed from anywhere in the last 3 years. Thus it has nothing to do with Security!!! HOw any people does a Security Uodate have to goose before it becomes an unsatisfactory Security Update?
This security update suddenly stopped my WIFI working and put me in a real hole.
(I am sure you don't care but I have a meeting tomorrow morning that I needed to do 3 hours of prep for including looking at VIDEO online. And the Security Update has just put paid to that. )
After 3 hours I have just got WIfi back- here's how:
I repaired permissions twice with Disk Utility - no joy. I found I could get online when I booted in Safe Mode (and I could get online with my Iphone on the same WIFi setup) so I knew it was not the router - though I did switch the router on and off a few times,
When I initially ran Repair permissions there was loads of things needing repair. I ran it again and 2 remained:
usr/share/derby it keeps trying to repair
and one of the package contents of the ARDAgent.app (System>Library>CoreServices>RemoteManagement>ARDAgent.app>Contents>MacOS>ARDAg ent) had a warning attached that it in the Disk Utility Repair Permissions report that it had been modified.
So I restored ARDAgent.app from a Time Machine Back up and replaced the offending file when in Safe Mode (Restart with Shift held down). - using Ctrl Click to open the ARDAgent.app package contents.
This seemed to sort it all out for me.
I guess people need to look in their Disk Utility Repair Permissions reports and see if any esoteric system files have been goosed by the update and see if they can get them back - although if you don't know what you are doing this could make things worse......
    Anyway I DO have questions:
    If this hadn't of worked:
    1) Would reinstalling Snow Leopard from disks have upset my preferences, installs of Logic and Audio drivers and 3rd party application installs and the rest?
    - the main stressor when this happens is not trying to lose the whole day.
    2) Is there a way of just restoring the System from a Time Machine Backup or a SuperDuper clone or do you have to restore the whole state of the entire Hard Drive?
    Best
    Tommy Banana
PS I feel better now. Thanks for listening.

The fact that you saw no glitches while running Logic before applying the update means almost nothing because that uses only a small subset of system resources. Far more significant is that Safe Mode restored some missing functionality: because it disables non-essential items like user fonts, third party drivers, & so on, it points to problems in those areas.
Equally significant, the fact that there are relatively few reports of post-update problems among the several million Snow Leopard users points away from the update itself as the cause of your problems.
Separate & apart from that, it so happens that I'm a sound engineer/system designer/board operator with nearly 40 years of professional touring experience. FWIW, I never have & never will update the software of any system I must rely on professionally (whether it is running on a Mac, a PC, or dedicated hardware) unless & until I can thoroughly test it first and I have a trustworthy backup/recursion strategy to fall back on in case of problems.
I strongly suggest you learn from your unpleasant experience & do the same. I have had far fewer problems with Macs than with PC's, but nothing is 100% reliable to begin with. Changing the OS software part way through the tour is just asking for trouble, no matter how reliable that has been in the past. Even if the budget allows for nothing better than a stack of burned CD's & a couple of consumer grade CD players, no professional tour can afford to be without some fallback strategy in place. That should be self-evident & require no warning from Apple or anybody else.

  • Wifi problem and Lion (my solution)

    Hi guys
Like so many other people, I've had problems with my wifi network at home after upgrading to Lion.
My mbp could'nt couldn't detect my wifi network (wpa-psk/AES. No SSID broadcast). My solution was to change the broadcasting channel from 13 to 8. Works 100% now.
(I could actually find and connect to my network, but only after connecting to a neighbors insecure access point, (connected to the same router as my AP(router) located in the buildings basement). My wifi would pop up after only a few seconds of being connected to my neighbors AP, and only then)
After having changed the channel, I connect instantly to my own AP every time.
    Morten

I called into apple care and the rep offered a solution the problem which worked perfectly.
He mentioned that 7.1 would fix the issue for new users going forward.
    Steps to Fix
    1. Open Network Preferences
    2. Click Advanced
    3. Remove ALL of the Preferred Networks (should be completely empty when completed)
    4. Ensure that Remember Networks is checked
    5. Click OK
    6. Select your network in the Network Name dropdown menu
    7. Ensure that Ask to join networks is checked
    8. click Apply
    9. Restart your computer
at this point you should be good to go!

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • My Iphone/ Ipod touch 4th gen WiFi problems and solution

Just wanted to let people know the problems that I had with my 4th gen Ipod touch and Iphone 4 WiFi connections (and my solution).
I was having consistent problems with my WiFi connection at home - my devices were connecting fine to the router and apparently the signal was full strength; however, nothing was working properly (internet, itunes, app store). To be specific the devices would work for 5-10 minutes but then the connection would start to falter. My other wireless devices were working fine (HTC Hero, laptops etc.) - just the ipod and iphone seemed to suffer from this signal problem (although the router was always apparently connected).
Obviously, I read countless forums to try and diagnose the problem. There seemed to be a litany of possible causes and I tried the following to resolve the issue:
    - updated router (Netgear WGR614 v6) firmware
    - rotated wireless encryption (WEP/WAP/nothing)
    - changed router channel
    - reset router power
    - reset network settings on Apple devices
    - changed g and b settings on router
Nothing seemed to work so I began to question the hardware i.e. the router (which I knew was working from my other devices) and the iphone/ipod.
I tested my iphone and ipod on other wireless networks (McDonalds in the UK has free WiFi) and found that, in contrast, they worked fine on other networks. I had read a few posts from people saying that my router was perhaps too old. So as a last resort I bought myself a new router (Netgear WNR2000 v2). I was loathe to do this earlier in case it didn't work, since reasonable spec routers are £50
Anyway it worked ... straight away. I have tested the new connection at home using this SpeedTest app. D/load = 9.01 Mbps, U/load = 0.46 Mbps, Ping 65ms. The router is using the full encryption (WAP2 something ...) and N connection.
As you can probably tell I'm no WiFi expert - I just wanted to post this in case people are having similar issues with older routers. I wasn't able to find any definitive advice and solutions from other users so I though I'd contribute here, which I guess is the first port of call for new Apple users, like me
I bought the new router 10 days ago and have been enjoying my full speed connection ever since - touch wood. Hope this helps.

Sounds like an intermittent contact problem some where eon the logic board. Hard to trace down and fix

  • Iphone 4 (White MC604FB) Update iOs 6.0 - Wifi Problem and iphone bug when trying to unlock on call receive. Is this a known bug ?

    Dear Members (and Apple Team)
I have two iphones 4 and two bugs on the white one
1/ Is the first gen (Black)
2/ Is the second gen (White MC604FB)
I both uptdated the into Update iOs 6.0 -
Bug 1 : With the white iPhone 4 i have a real Wifi Problem, as close as 5 to 7 meters from any WiFi spot, i lose the signal, where my "black" iphone at the same time and same distance shows full signal (and tested with safari.... works).
Bug 2 : Once the white iphone is in "stand by" when trying to unlock on incoming call, the touch screen works and receive the touch information, but it bugs on trying to unlock to receive the call. (very very anoying :o) have to call back almost every time.
Are those already known bugs ? Is there a fix ?
    Reagrds
    Alexandre

    Dear Diesel
    Thanks for your prompt reply.
I did restore before posting, in evry possible way. no improvment.
I have 24H ago updated to iOS 6.01. So far no more "screen jam" on incoming calls, but the wifi is still inconsistent with very poor signal strenght (compare to my black iphone 4)
PS : For information, did beleive  there was two versions of iphone 4 (In Europe ) :
1/ Is firts generation "gen" with With board MC603FB
2/ The white one for me with board MC604FB

  • My wifi problem -- and solution

I realised this morning that my new iPhone has been using EDGE the whole time. You can easily see across the top if you are connected to wifi (it uses the airport-style signal strength symbol) or EDGE (symbolized by a square icon with an E in it).
I didn't realise that. Ah well... When I looked at our WiFi network and reviewed the details, I saw we weren't connecting at all. I have seen there are a few posts on the apple discussion forums about encryption problems--and we use WEP encryption. So, I told the iphone to forget the network, then reconnected and specified "WEP ascii or hex" instead of "WEP password" for the password.
Now, everything seems to be fine. EDGE is OK for when you're out and about, but at home (or work!) I'd want that wifi actually working.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 GHz Intel Core Duo

I have an older Airport Extreme base station (g not n?). I have tried setting both a WEP or a WPA/WPA2 Personal password. However, even though all of these password settings work with 2 different MacBook Pros, I cannot connect to my iPhone with any password. The only way I can get wireless on the iPhone is to set the security on the base station to "none" and thus use no password. Thus, my only protection from the outside world is that I have a closed wireless network. I also tried using the WEP HEX/ASCII option on the phone (with a WEP password) but that does not work either. My passwords are just normal passwords with a mix of letters, digits and special characters (e.g. $), currently 13 characters all together. I don't understand what people are talking about when mentioning that passwords must be of a particular length and only have letters and digits and then entering the password starting with an extra $. Using Macs of various types with my Airport Extreme base, I have never done this. Any suggestions? This is important to me since it appears that I have no AT&T reception at my home even though the AT&T coverage tool (which I used before purchasing the iPhone) said I should get moderate coverage.

  • Is anyone having wifi problems on their iPad after downloading iOS8?

My mother has downloaded iOS8 onto her iPad3 and is now unable to get wifi on it. It keeps asking her for the wireless key but when she inputs it, the wifi icon appears at the top of the screen as usual then just as quickly disappears. Has anyone else experienced this and been able to solve it?

This is great news that everyone's WiFi are having issues after an iOS update!!!
Let me explain, and I hope someone from Apple really really looks and responds to this issue effecting everyone.
I updated my iPad2 to iOS 7.1 a few months back, and then I stopped getting WiFi when I'm more than 10 yards from my router at home.  Tested in multiple WiFi networks, locations (in different countries even), and even went as far as changing the settings or shutting off any other airwave frequency devices at home (like 2.4 GHz handsfree phones, radios, tvs, PS3 wireless controllers, bluetooth signals).  I even had my iPhone4 (iOS6) and iPhone 5S (on iOS7.1.2) as comparison since they have no issues. What I found out was, my iPad2 on iOS7.1 performs weakly on 2.4 GHz signals.  5.0 GHz much better.  I don't mind replacing my old 2.4 GHz only router to one with 2.4 GHz + 5 GHz, but it won't solve the problem when I go to a network in the public (like airports where I frequent).
I went to the Apple Store 4 separate times (in 2 countries), to let them know about the situation.  They could not do a distance test at the Apple store, because they are on the 2.4/5.0 routers. They did a diagnostic twice with the hardware, and everything checked out fine.  So they began advising me to "Reset Network Settings" and even as far as "Reset All Settings"... basically started from a blank iPad2, nothing worked because I'm sure it was a iOS7.1 issue.  I don't think they have 2 different pieces of WiFi receiver on the iPad2, and I am certain it is a software issue.  Makes me think, did they purposely change settings to weaken the receiving of the 2.4 GHz signal?  (That's just a civil lawsuit waiting to happen...)
I downloaded iOS8.0 on to my iPad2 hoping they fixed this WiFi issue that has already been a hot topic in these forums since iOS7, but of course the update failed to correct the problem.  Right now, to me, it sounds more and more like an overlook iOS programming that maybe causing this WiFi issue, since it is also happening to people who upgraded to iOS8 and iOS8.0.1 for many different type of devices (even on brand new iPhone6).  An WiFi only iPad2 that can't receive WiFi is very close to being a brick.  Is not a good feeling bringing your iPad2 to the airport to find out it won't pick up a signal.
I'm no computer expert, but if you can tweak your router to broadcast stronger on one signal via software (b/n/g/ac, or 2.4 vs 5.0 GHz), I'm sure something can be done with the receiver?  Apple, if you are reading this, please do something!!!  This isn't just an iOS8 issue... it has been an issue since iOS7 but no one in the Apple world believes it is an issue.  And now I hope you can see from all these postings about WiFi issue, you have to believe that it may be a software/programming issue. If the software somehow created a hardware/firmware issue, then replace our hardware/firmware please.
Perhaps Tim Cook should get this message maybe he will respond better. What's his email address? #TimCook.  #Apple.  #iPadTurningInToABrick  #FixtheWiFiPlease

  • WiFi problems and email coming from the past...

    Hi all,
Looks like I'm having a lot of problems with my 2006 MacBook Pro: after overheating when trying to install a different OS on a VM thanks to VirtualBox (see here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2221808&tstart=0 ) or simply watching streaming video (see here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2222219&tstart=0 ), I've now noticed strange email in my Inbox on Thunderbird. Email dating from the 1st of January, 1970...
Is my EFI battery slowly dying on me? I haven't changed it since I bought my MBP in the summer of 2006. Where is it located? I've added RAM recently, but I haven't got any further, dismantling-wise. Wish I didn't have to...
Aside from that, and for the second day in a row, I've noted that my WiFi chip has trouble staying connected to my Internet box (I'm in France, and we're big on "boxes" for broadband, telephone and TV. We've even invented a name for it: triple-play. So-o French...). The network itself isn't at fault, since my other computers don't have problems at all connecting. Since I've had multiple problems with this machine (a logic board swap last year and a change of SuperDrive last summer, plus four different batteries in three years) and it's out of warranty, I don't know what to do. Should I gut it open? And if I do, what am I supposed to look out for...?

Check the Long Headers or Ra Source to see if the Dates are different, if so it's likely the PRAM Battery.
    Direct download link to Manual...
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Manuals/15-inch-macbook-pro-manual.pdf
The new bottom pan will not come with the PRAM battery so you need to make sure that is removed and transferred over to the new bottom. The PRAM is located towards the front right of the unit around where the superdrive was located. It is usually going to be a round blue object with a cable coming out of it. It is held on by a slight adhesive.

  • Iphone 4s wifi problems and frequent crashes post 7.1 update

    Hello!
I have an iphone 4s for about a year now.
After updating to iOS 7.1, I experienced frequent crashes and intermittent wifi connection inability (wifi button greyed out).
I have reset my phone 2-3 times to factory settings but the problem is still there.
Frequent crashes and intermittent wifi connectibility. (Mostly absent)
The phone was working perfectly until I upgraded to iOS 7.1.
Is there a 4s wifi patch or a new iOS update (7.1.1??) coming out??
Please let me know, this is very frustrating!
I am a doctor and sometimes I am on call. Having an unreliable phone (I sometimes find it frozen or turned off), is not an option for me.
    Thank you very much

now i downgraded my Neo V from ICS to GB 2.3.4 and guess what !!!!!, i have the same Wi-Fi problem, i still can't see and connect on 90% of the serounded networks, so now i have to live with it !!!!!???
i think the phone is harmed, and i think thats the problem. sony didn't just release a bad ICS rom, but also the phone it self is effected

i am glad that i went there! really i am, they come clean from the begining,
    1) then don't support ICS till now.
    2) they only can downgrade to 2.4.5
    3) they have no idea about when the ICS problem will be fixed (but they also tell me that there are  customer happy with it).
    4) i can't leave my phone as i have work calles to do at night so they dongraded the phone but they didn't try the wireless yet as they need time, so they informed me to try it my self and if there is a problem i can come back but i should leave my phone to be tested.
i have the phone now but i still didn't check the wirless problem, my home network was working on ICS so i will wait till tomorrow so that i can check many routers as i will be at work.
the thing is:- i love ICS layout and sittings, new options but after the SC handed the phone to me i sense the deference in the touch , respond , and the speed of the phone.
i will report tomorrow after i test the wireless. i wish to works
