Wifi question, etc....

So I was trying to connect to the internet at my school which has wireless internet throughout the campus. To connect to the internet though, you have to use your school id and password. My ?; Is it possible to connect to the internet if you have to log in with a username and password? Because it couldn't find the server for the longest time, and once I even got it to display the login page but it couldn't log in because it didn't have internet connection. Also note that the ipod touch had signal and could connect to the network but not join it because I couldn't log in, and that I have connected elsewhere to the internet.
Side question: how do you take websites that are added to the main screen off? I could only find where to add them...

You should be able to connect to your school network with your login name and password. My school also have wireless throughout the campus, and we have a login system too. I had to get a separate account for it, but it worked. Also, make sure the network you're connecting to is actually the school one and not some random one that your iPod picked up.

Doesn't matter what orientation the ipad is in, it won't scroll up from the bottom.
All other screen functions work normally.

Settings/Control Center. There are two options which are pretty self-explanitory...one enables/disables access on the Lock Screen and one enables/disables access within apps/games.

  • Mixture of Wifi Questions (Extend network, Wireless Radio, etc)

    Hey Apple Forums!
So here's the main issue. I've set up a network consisting of two routers. The first is a TC Dual-Band 2 (firmware 7.5.1) and the second is a TC (firmware 7.4.2). The first is connected to the internet and the second is in bridged mode; rather than being used in a WDS, I've set the second to extend the network of the first one, and I've made sure that the first has "Allow this network to be extended" checked. Neither one have any ethernet clients, just wireless. We're using DHCP, a WPA/WPA2 password, and the radio frequencies are automatic (2.4GHz N(B/G compatible), 5 GHz N(A compatible)).
As for the clients, we have a Wii, Xbox 360 (A/B/G wireless adapter), two macbooks (both 4,1), an iMac ('09-'10)), an iBook ('03-'04), a G4 Cube, and a Powerbook (12' Alum). Right now I'm operating all Network Administration from a Macbook.
I set up the second router to extend the first because we have the Xbox 360 and Wii in a room with poor signal, and we often traffic in there with the macbooks. Being the tech junkie and certified network technician, I thought back to my schooling and remembered that the more users on the network, the more the signal degrades over distance; this meant that we needed something to cover the room or else nobody would be able to connect in there (and if they could, the speed to do so would mimic dial-up. Yuck!). So I had it extend the first, have the WPA/2 key change every 12 hours (the homes here are spaced out, and if someone wanted free wi-fi they could use our Guest network)
I'm see two things wrong. The first is a random drop in our connection to the internet. While it may not necessarily be the router dropping it as it could be the network being too busy, we experience a 5-15 second block to connect to the internet perhaps around the hour and at random times. We did not have the problem before I set up the second router to extend our Dual-Band. However, I looked at the logs on the second router and found that the TKIP key was being rotated every few seconds
Aug 15 10:01:06 Severity:5 Rotated TKIP group key.
    Aug 15 10:01:13 Severity:5 Associated with station 00:21:47:b5:20:d7
Aug 15 10:01:13 Severity:5 Installed unicast TKIP key for supplicant 00:21:47:b5:20:d7
    Aug 15 10:01:23 Severity:5 Disassociated with station 00:21:47:b5:20:d7
Aug 15 10:01:24 Severity:5 Rotated TKIP group key.
    (repeat every 1-4 minutes)
because our Wii was attempting to connect. I saw that I had set it up to connect with a WPA/WPA2 (AES) key, and promptly switched it to a WPA (TKIP); I cannot confirm the changes yet, but I figured that this may help slightly. I noticed no errors reported on the first router via logs, but did notice
    Aug 15 09:30:03 Severity:5 Connection accepted from [fe80::21e:c2ff:feaf:8c1e%bridge0]:52084.
being spammed every few seconds or minutes. I figure this is normal and part of the bridge
Now the second isn't really a problem as I see it to be...wasteful. I know that the Dual-Band 2 uses the 2.4GHz as the guest band and the 5GHz for the secured wireless by default. When you put it into "allow to be extended", I found that both signals were broadcasted in BOTH frequencies. I used iStumbler when trying to determine the optimal placing of the second router, and found a duplicate network for our secured and guest networks. I'm guessing this is supposed to happen to allow routers with other frequencies to extend the signals (like how our second router is 2.4GHz only but can extend the 5GHz secured network), but to me it seems as though the router would be wasting power and time if the signals are being rebroadcasted (1 packet in 2.4GHz, 1 packet in 5GHz; wasting a few milliseconds that build over time) when they could stick to a single frequency. So the question is, can I swap the guest and main network frequencies to stop this redundant broadcasting as well as allow my secured network to be only in 2.4GHz mode?
Any questions, answers, or mere statements of information is appreciated!

Ok, so the TKIP key rotation and disassociation may be normal due to the encryption standards for both it and CCMP. However from what little I've found, the original Time Capsule using firmware 7.4.2 may be causing the intermittent drops

I'll try this tomorrow and see using my Xbox and Macbook (UDP streaming and TCP to be covered)

  • Ethernet and WIFI Question

This maybe a redundant question, I want to back up the stuff in my Imac using TC.  I do not want to use this Imac wireless nor do I want my backups done wireless but can I still use the wifi system on TC for Ipad ,Nook, etc. without having to configure my Imac everytime to use a wifi devise?

Yes. Just connect the iMac to your Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, then go into System Preferences->Network and either set Ethernet to a higher priority than AirPort, or turn off AirPort completely.
Your wireless devices will continue to connect to the internet, and even to your iMac, through the Time Capsule wirelessly, while your iMac will enjoy the faster speeds and improved reliability of the wired ethernet connection. Your devices which connect to your iMac "wirelessly" will continue to do so; they will not know the difference between your iMac on the Time Capsule's wireless network and your iMac on the Time Capsule's wired network – it's all the same as far as connectivity is concerned.

  • Japanese font/input & Wifi Question

    Hi,
My wife wants an iPod for her birthday and I am considering the iPod Touch. Mainly because it gives her access to the Internet and email when I have the ibook at work, and it gives her a portable Mp3 Player. She is Japanese and most of the emails she sends and receives are in Japanese. I want to know if an iPod touch bought in Australia will have this capability. The sales rep at the local supplier presumed it would, but really didn't know. Also, will the menus be in Japanese where the applications have Japanese versions? Do Japanese websites render with the right font etc.
Also, I am a little confused about Internet access with an iPod touch. My current understanding is that you need to have a wireless network set up at home, say with Airport Express, as I do, to get a connection. It's just that the sales pitch is, "You can download music while walking down the street if you are in a 'WiFi zone'", and I didn't really get what that means. But now I believe that Wifi zones are usually password protected, and it is actually difficult to get any kind of Internet connection, in my experience, from just anywhere, as most are locked, or have short range. But if you have something at home like an Airport Express, then you will be right, when at home at least. Is this understanding I have correct?
Your answer to either or both of these questions is sincerely appreciated.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
You set the language the Touch uses in 'settings'.
Outside your home WiFi availability is dependent on how many and where 'Hotspots'(zones) are located. It's likely that coverage is better in cities and in public places like train stations, airports etc. and some large stores. Starbucks coffee shops also provide hotspots. Some will be password protected, others open access. Some you'll pay for others will be free. In any event it's unlikely you'll be able to walk down a street with continuous coverage as each hotspot has a very limited range. You'll need to do a little local research!
At home you'll have continuous/free wifi access through your network/router.
    Mike.

  • Can you still use an old 3G on ATT and wifi questions

I am going to be selling my old 3G iphone soon, I have erased it removed my sim etc but I wondered can the new buyer use this with att service or since Itunes seems to have abandoned the 3G from IOS updates is it even possible?  I figured someone with kids might want it to add a extra line for Christmas or for little ones to use at home off the wifi network for more basic apps (I know some of the newer apps won't work) but many still did....
Also now that I have erased all data and content and removed my sim before selling - the screen shows connect to itunes, if the person connects to itunes is this phone going to work for the basic wifi stuff or will they need a sim card to even be able to use it as a touch so to speak (wifi only enabled), just wasn't sure if they NEED a sim for that, also now that it is wiped and my sim is out and they start a new setup on it for say wifi does this phone retain the my number is stuff so that if they downloaded some app i use like pinger that they would get my messages too or be able to send as me?
I just didn't want to mislead anyone about the facts if it could be used to add a 3rd or 4th line for a teen by taking it into att or if it being non supported for ios updates if att wouldn't even allow it, or if it was sold as a wifi only kinda device if they would still somehow see or have my number connected to anything like pinger or something (i can't see or do anything with the phone right now just says connect to itunes), altho i do know you can't download some apps being only a 3G - it does do many apps so figure it might have value to someone who wants it for their younger child at home on wifi.
    Bill

A 3G that was originally with AT&T will still work with AT&T if you put a valid AT&T SIM in it. However, many apps now require iOS 5, so the selection of apps will be limited.

  • Newbie WiFi Question...Help!

I am going on a cross country trip and would like to use my iTouch as my main mode of internet access. Relying on free WiFi at coffee places ect. is not going to cut it. I'm wondering if there is a way to pay for internet access or can that only be done with the iPhone?
Can the iTouch be hooked up to mobile broadband?
    Any help would be awesome!

You're stuck with free or paid Wi-Fi access (places like Starbucks, etc.) There is no option for mobile broadband - that requires hardware that the iPod Touch does not have (cellular radios like the iPhone has).

  • New MacBook, Free Public Wifi Question

    Hello All:
My aunt, who is in her seventies, bravely purchased a MacBook today. Leopard is loaded up. She has to wait until mid November for fiber optic to be installed in her building in NYC (no dsl available), so I looked at what Airport might find, and it seemed to find one unprotected network and then displayed, below a thin gray line (like the one that separates the list of networks from options like "Join Other Networks) the words "Free Public WiFi." Having failed to connect to what I thought was an unprotected network, I set my sights on this Free Public Wifi. It would not connect and asked for a pw. Is it true that the password for anything called "free public wifi" are those very words ? Any advice ? Does anyone know if there is a genuine free public wifi signal with a range around Penn South in NYC, on W 25th, between 8th and 9th ? Or know anything else she could try to ride the unprotected (aka the neighbor's) network ? I got an "an error occured" message from airport for that one. Thanks in advance for any responses to these many questions !

I travel a lot and find my Macbook will connect to some open networks fine and will not connect to others. The problem is you do not know how the other end has their router set up.
It may be an unprotected network, but the user may have limited the number of connections able to connect to the network, or restricted the number of available IP addresses for that connection.
The most important thing is be very careful of any network that says "free" or "public". I have read many articles about people who will set up a false networks in an attempt to get your personal info. You most likely will be able to connect to the network, but will not have internet access. Be careful.

  • 10.10.3 slow, wifi problem etc...

I am running a Mac Mini 2011, 2ghz 17, 8 gigs of ram and 1tb. I had Yosemite installed and was working fine, no problems until 10.10.3
    1. Wifi - slow, un responsive
    2. Applications - slow to open and unresponsive at times
    3. iTunes - trying to watch playback on trailers, and they buffer (wifi problem)
    4. Photos - just not a fan but maybe it will grow on me
I don't typically complain, but this is getting a bit frustrating as this is my main computer. Other are my work laptops running windows. Also, since I watch a lot of content via the net etc. and pretty much everything is at a dead stop. I have yet to really check every application or function but assume they will perform the same.
I have reset my network a few time, cleared out some old files and some restarts on the machine itself. Last resort will be to wipe it clean and try a new install. Any other suggestions before I take this route?
    Thanks

    Linc,
I ran a few applications and started looking at the logs. There is one common theme. This is what I found. The Raid failure to me is confusing. I have 2 500gig drives but its setup as 1TB, no raid configuration. Let me know your thoughts on this. I figured, this may be what is causing all the other problems.

  • WiFi Question, 3g VS my 1st Gen

I have a first generation Iphone and I also have the 3G version and my question is that if I have both phones together in any room in my house I can only pick up the WiFi signal on my 3G phone. The first gen phone rarely even sees the WiFi signal and if it does it can only stay connected for a short time. The 3G sees the signal every time and I can keep the signal connected until I manualy turn off the WiFi. Is there anything I can do or is this normal? Thanks

try resetting network settings: settings-->general-->reset-->reset network settings. (you'll have to re-enter the password for your router).
i woudl then proceed tot he standard troubleshooting steps:
    1. power on/off
    2. reboot (or reset; holding home and the sleep/wake buttons until the apple logo, ignoring the "slide to turn off".)
    3. restore (most likely as a new phone)
if after ALL that, nothing. i would make an appt with the genius bar, cuz its safe to say that its a hardware issue.

  • Syncing and wifi question

Just wondering if you have your ipod registered on two computers can you add stuff from one computer without losing or overwriting what was on there from the other computer. More specifically I used my desktop for all my music and it kinda died on me and I still have my laptop with additional music but I don't want to lose what was already on the ipod. Hope that makes sense. Also whenever I connect to the wifi and update apps it continually tells me that account info has changed even tho I made sure it was all correct. It's getting pretty annoying. Any help is very appreciated.

It's possible. Both computers have to be authorized with iTunes under the same user account and you should be fine.
I've done it with my wife's Macbook and my Powerbook and it worked OK. Nothing got overwritten - stuff sort off got added on top of each other. A bit messy, though.
As far as the second question, sorry. I don't know.

  • T|X wifi questions

I was thinking about purchasing a T|X from ebay seller itsnothere to replace my T2 since that is showing signs of wear with this screen wine i'm getting when I use it. So i have a few questions about the Wifi:
    1. First of all, does it support WPA2 encryption for wireless networks? Reason is becasue my school uses that and the guys i work with said if the Palm doesn't have that capability, I can't use the internet. If not, could I get it on there?
    2. It has 802.11b, would it be able to handle the demands of internet surfing and email of today?
    Thanks
    Post relates to: Tungsten T2

One of my TXes goes with me wherever I go, even though I also have a Pre.  I just can't shake the Palm OS habit, and some of the valuable apps and data I have on it.
    1.  You might need the Enterprise security update, downloadable here
    2.  Internet "surfing" depends on the particular web site.  It works fine on some sites, not so great on others.  Email...I find that VersaMail is still a great email app even after all these years.  Rock solid, relatively fast downloads, but to open downloads you have to have an application installed that can handle the file type.  There's also an alternative third-party email app called Snapper Email which I think is still available and offers a free trial period.
