WiFi router location question.

When you move your wifi router and it shows the old address how does it learn the new address. Can you speed up the process or does it just take time ?

Hi, I have recently moved home and changed my details in my Apple ID but when using find friends or the maps app I am still located at my previous address, can you help ?

If you have the WiFi-only iPad (which does not have GPS) your location is determined by the mapped location of nearby WiFi routers.
Without GPS location-finding is done by using a Apple location database which contains the MAC addresses of routers and their physical location. A MAC address is a unique number which is built-in to all network devices when manufactured.
The Apple database is built and updated by Apple GPS-enabled devices (primarily iPhones) actually seeing routers and then adding/updating the router's locations into the database. Apple does not provide an user-accessible interface to manually update the database.
Note that to be used for location determination, a device does not need to be actually connected to a router, it just has to see the router. More precise location determination can be done if several nearby routers can be seen. When a router is moved from one location to another erroneous locations can sometimes be reported until the router's location is corrected in Apple's database.

  • HT5467 Updating WiFi router location in Apple's database?

I recently moved and the WiFi location database still shows my router in my old residence, which is the wrong state. How do I update Apple's WiFi location database?

Thanks for the reply. Here are some more updates as far as trying to get this straightened out.
The iPhone eventually switched back to thinking it was in Austin shortly after I turned my femtocell back on. I can't be sure if turning on the femtocell is what threw it off again, or if more time back on my wireless did it and it was just a coincidence with when I turned the femtocell on.
I also seem to have confirmed that if the phone is connected to cellular via my femtocell, this totally breaks location services even if I'm not on my wireless. I turned the iPhone's wireless off again, rebooted it, and location services failed to determine the phone's location (in maps) so long as my femtocell was still on. Once I disconnected it, the phone was able to accurately geolocate itself. This behavior seems to agree with documentation I found earlier. I am not wondering (speculation) if the iPhone switched back to thinking it was in Austin when I turned my femtocell on, because it fell back to the bad router geolocation once being on the femtocell horked with location services.
So right now my iPhone once again knows where it is, and iCloud agrees. To reiterate, the phone is disconnected from wifi and my femtocell is turned off (so I have just a super weak signal directly from a tower). I'm going to leave it this way for a few days this time, the thought being that maybe it just needs more time for something to settle in (highly technical I know) before reconnecting to my wireless network, at which time I hope it would tell the location database that the router has a new location. We'll see. I have not tried changing my SSID yet, as I suggested I might.

  • How can I tell Apple to store my MAC-address of my Wifi Router in there location DB?

    Hello
Recently I bought a new Wifi Router and when I use the Maps App it tells that my ipad is located in China (Shangai)
When I also want to use the automatic timezone feature in the preferences app it indicates that my ipad is in China (Shangai)
I have already searched for a number of discussions (in and out the Apple Support) and their I found that the problem is in a location DB managed by Apple (crowd-sourced database). It seems that my Wifi Router is registered with a wrong location. :-(
    my questions :
.- is the somebody that can give me a procedure (certified by Apple) how I can update this location DB?
.- How can I store my Wifi Router MAC address with the correct location in this DB?
    Already thanks in advance
    Kindly regards

  • IPad Air "My Location" function is not operating when connected to my own BT HomeHub 2.0 WiFi Router, but "My Location" works when connected to friends' BT routers within a mile of mine.

Friends with their own ipads connected to my router experience similar non-availability of updated "My Location" when in my home.
So it seems to be a router issue rather than an iPad issue. However I have seen comment elsewhere that it may be because Apple's location database does not have my router location listed. I have no idea how authoritative a response this was, or simply a guess, and wonder if Apple themselves have confirmed this as an issue for them to address. If there are piles of routers out there which Apple don't recxognize the location of, it seems rather pointless a facility!
If anyone has resolved the problem by switching their routers to a different make/model I would be interested in their feedback.

If you have the WiFi-only iPad your location is determined by the location of nearby WiFi routers. The WiFi-only iPad does not have GPS. Without GPS location-finding is done by using a Apple location database which contains the MAC addresses of routers and their physical location. A MAC address is a unique number which is built-in to all network devices when manufactured. The Apple database is built and updated by Apple GPS-enabled devices (primarily iPhones) actually seeing your router and then adding/updating the router's location in the database.
Bottom line: Your Router is probably not yet in the Apple location database. It hasn't been seen yet and added to the database. Without this your iPad cannot be located. Unfortunately, there is no way for users to request information to be added to Apple's database.

  • I have a Time Capsule as my main WiFi router in my home.  I'd like to extend my WiFi service to my guest house located approx 100 feet away. Will the AirPort Express fill this need?  Is the AirPort Extreme a better fit?

I am using a Time Capsule in conjunction with my IMAC 27" system as my main WiFi router in my home.  I would like to extend my WiFi service to my guest house which is located about 100 feet away.  Can I use the Airport Express to provide this extended range?  Would I be better served to use the Airport Extreme?  Thanks!

The normal location for an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme is a point that is about half way between the main router....the Time Capsule in this case.....and the area that needs more wireless coverage.....the guest house.
I doubt that you will be able to locate an AirPort at this "half way" point, correct?
Before you buy anything, take a laptop, iPhone, iPad, etc out to the guest house as a test to see if you can log on and get a reliable Internet connection over the wireless.
If you can, then either an AirPort Express or AirPort Exreme could  be used to provide additional wireless signal coverage in the guest house.
If you cannot get a reliable connection with the "test" mentionded above, neither AirPort will help since they can only "extend" the quality of signal that they receive.
If this is the case, you will need to look at running an Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule out to the guest house to provide the reliable connection that you will need.

  • Connecting T5 to Netgear WiFi router

I have been trying to connect my T5 using the Palm WiFi card to my Netgear DG834G ADSL WiFi router and have read the very helpful check list provided on your site as well as the other correspondence. I started with the usual problem of the thing disconnecting after trying to download the IP and worked up to manual entry of IPs and DNSs etc.
    So far I have :-
Found the T5 MAC and entered it as a trusted device in the router.
From the router itself I have found :-
The two DNS values (these are for the ADSL port?)
The hex 128 bit Key (all 4 are the same) and checked it against a separate key generator using the phrase I entered when I set the router up with the P.C.
The following IP address information:- For the ADSL port:- the IP address and it’s mask, network type (PPPoa), the IP address for the gateway and the two DNS values. I have also found the IP address for the router LAN port.
Loading these in various combinations into the T5 setup in manual causes the unit to seem to log on and display the field strength. But Blazer etc does not work. If I change the WEP key to make it wrong it logs on in the same way, which is very suspicious!
I have managed to get the T5 to download the IP address in auto (after setting it as a trusted device in the router) by switching to ad-hoc and it returns a message saying that it has "connected". Checking the network "info" in prefs/WiFi then shows an IP not found in the router information with it’s mask. However, no DNS info or IP address in the line called "Router" shows up and although the response from Blazer is different (quick connect and URL rejection), nothing works. Manually entering the DNSs with auto IP recovery in ad-hac did not change anything.
I have been through entering the WEP key in hex etc.
Of all the IP address information available, which ones should be entered in the three fields required on the T5? The DNS values relate to the ADSL port. Is this OK.
I would welcome any suggestions. I have yet to try it at a remote site, but I am sure the basic kit is OK, just finger trouble !!!
    Thanks in advance

Russel, you haven't mentioned if you have the router's comm. speed set to be compatible with an 802.11/b device.
Do you have this setting correct?

  • I have a wifi router already. Can I connect a time capsule to that wirelessly?, I have a wifi router already. Can I connect my time capsule to that wirelessly?

I Have a wifi router which is located in my brothers bedroom. Now I am buying a iMac. Along with it I want to buy a time capsule which I want in my bed room. Is it possible to connect the two wifi routers wirelessly?

The Time Capsule can be configured to "join a wireless network" so backups will occur over the wireless network that is being provided by the wireless router in the other bedroom.
Things will be fine as long as there is a strong wireless signal where the Time Capsule will be located.
But...the Time Capsule cannot "extend" the wireless network or provide more wireless coverage...unless...the other router is also an Apple product.

  • Do I connect Apple TV ethernet cable to modem or wifi router?

    Hello
I'm trying to find out what exactly Apple TV connects to when using an ethernet cable (instead of wifi): the internet modem or the wifi router connected to that modem? I can't find a clear answer to that question.
My wifi router (airport express) is connected to one of my modem ports with an ethernet cable (obviously).
    - Can I connect my Apple TV to my modem similarly into one of my other free ports on my modem?
    - Do I loose of the Apple TV features when I do that, or can I still stream my MabookPro or iPhone to my tv through Apple TV (does it have it's own wifi reception)?
Hope someone can give me some insight into that.
    Thanks!
    Chris

Connect it to your router. It's likely that your modem is also acting as a router (most ISP modems do this), so you effectively have two networks - but you want all your devices connected to the same network (the one that your wifi is created from, i.e. the router).
The AppleTV can connect wired or wireless, but if it's within cable distance of your router, it's always better to connect with a cable.

  • How to move Wifi Router

Hello, I am wondering how to move my M1424WR Wifi router. It does not reach some places of my house because the Verizon man who installed it put it in a corner in my basement. It uses a power cord and a coax cord which connects to a splitter. Then the splitter connects to the Verizon white box. I was wondering if I was to move it to a better location where to plug the COAX cord into.
Any help would be very appreciated, thanks.

You can connect to any COAX that comes from your ONT.   If you have FiOS TV you can use a splitter and connect there.  Or run an additional COAX from an existing line to where you want your router.

  • How is easy is to setup Time Capsule as a wifi router

How easy is it to setup Time Capsule as a wifi router?

The following would be the basic setup steps for the Time Capsule (TC):
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling

    o IP Address: <provided by your ISP>
    o Subnet Mask: <provided by your ISP>
    o Router Address: <provided by your ISP>
    o DNS Server(s): <provided by your ISP>
    o Domain Name: <provided by your ISP>
    o DHCP Client ID: (optional)
o Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
o Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address
    Internet - DHCP
    o DHCP Range: 10.0 1.x
    o DHCP Beginning Address: 10.0.1.2
    o DHCP Ending Address: 10.0.1.200

  • Best N wifi router for 2007 draft N macbook ?

I read that there can be a lot of N wifi compatability issues with these early draft N. laptops...
For a location servicing several PC laptops and one 2007 draft N MacBook, can anyone tell me what would be the best new router to buy?
Price is an issue... unless it is absolutely necessary, am trying to avoid buying the latest, greatest and most expensive.
Preference is also not for an Airport Extreme unless that is the only viable option.
    All tips appreciated.

What particular LinkSys Wifi router do you have that works well with your son's 2007 draft N macbook pro? There are number of models now. Also, do you have any idea of whether your son's macbook actually get's N speed connectivity?
It's a [WRT310N|http://www-id.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=LProductC2&childpagename=ID%2FLayout&cid=1175242816979&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisit orWrapper&lid=1697985430B01]. I can only assume that he gets N speeds or he would have mentioned it. I'll have to get back to you about any details that you have concerning his connections. He is in college and this is his winter break so I don't see him too much. The balance of our network that uses G is enjoying increased wireless coverage and an increase in bandwidth availability.

  • Macbook pro fails to auto connect Internet after rebooting wifi router

My macbook pro with retina can’t automatically connect to wifi after the wifi router was rebooted.
There is exclamation mark on wifi sign. As the picture shows, when I clicked the wifi sign, it shows no Internet connection. However, It is strange there is a tick in front of my wifi name. Moreover, in preference set, it shows a confused self-assigned IP address 169.254…(showed in picture). In order to use wifi, I had to turn wifi off, and then turn it on. And the correct IP address for my mac should be 192… (showed in picture).
I had tried to delete my preferred networks and tested macbook in my friend’s home, but it still failed. This bug happens in my friend’s macbook pro with retina (same to mine) and macbook air. However, the previous version, Macbook pro (not retina), has no this problem.
This happened just when I reboot the router. It is normal working (connect automatically) when I come back home. Appreciating for any way to solve it!

I have no clue of what an Airport antenna is either.  I know my Airport Extreme does not have one.
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • How do I set up Express box as addition to existing WIFI router?

Used to be able to do this when setting up the Express box, as I did years ago at home. But there's no option in the install process to enable this - which renders the product pretty useless.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Neil

    Hi Bob
thanks for getting responding to my request.
When I originally set up Airport express network at home, the set up software gave a couple of options, to either be a stand alone wifi node, or be added to existing router - not necessariy an Apple one - I have a Netgear router at home. This was a decade or so ago.
We recently bought Airport Express box for the office as we want to stream music to it and the set uo software has changed in that it insists the Airport Express box is connected to a router with a cable - which defeats the point of a WIFI product.
So - my question was how to do this as it is insane that a wifi box cannot connect via wifi to a wifi router.
However we found a solution by using the Apple Remote app to set up the Airport Express box so that it has been added to the Netgear router we have in the office.
So - it turns out you can connect an Apple Airport express box wirelessly to a non Apple wireless router, but not with Apple Airport assistant utility - you have to use Remote on an iPhone.
This isn't how I'd configure the products, but hey, what do I know?
    Cheers
