Wifi signal stronger with macbook lid open

Just noticed something weird and thought I'd share. I currently have my macbook hooked up to a 22in monitor and for the first time used the monitor with my macbook closed so I could just have everything on a single large display. (btw, is there any way to make an external monitor the default monitor and have my macbook screen act as the 2nd screen?). Anyways, when I had macbook lid closed, my wifi practically dropped, so I opened it and my wifi went back to full speed. Not a problem, just noticed and was wondering if this has happened to other people.

As in most laptops, the antenna encircles the display, when you shut it you change the antenna's position moving it lower and closer to the internal electronics (interference).
At least that's a possible explanation.

  • Sleeping with the lid open

This is so basic, I am embarrassed to post, but here goes. I have a MacBook that sleeps just fine with the lid closed. Light pulses, spin up noise when I open the lid. Recently I have noticed that when I leave the lid open, the screen goes black in the appointed time (from setting in System Preferences), but the little light on the front does not pulse nor do I get the spin-up sound when I move the mouse, etc.
Now for the embarrassing part -- has it always worked this way, or is this something new? I feel sure that previously I could leave the lid open and after the appropriate time, the light would pulse, etc. But not now.
I have reset the PMU several times, checked the sleep preferences, made sure that there was nothing running, no bluetooth activity, etc. But no joy. I called Apple, and the tech there (who quite frankly was hard to understand, but I think I did understand him enough) told me that the behavior I am experiencing is correct. What I want to know is whether the MB sleeps with its lid open and no pulsing light (just on steady). Is my machine sleeping or not?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your replies! I have checked my settings repeatedly -- currently (for testing purposes) set for the screen to sleep after 2 minutes, the hard drive to sleep after 2 minutes, hard drive to sleep when possible, etc. Bluetooth is not the problem, set to not wake for bluetooth activity, as is the "wake for ethernet". I have even restarted the computer, left it at the login page, and the behavior remains (no pulsing, no spin-up sound). Now that I think about it, when I close the lid for sleep, the light pulses, but no spin-up sound. Hmmm, should I be worried?
Just seems to me that with my G4 PowerBook and this MB earlier, that with the lid open the light would pulse, and just a while ago started not pulsing. Seems about the time I did a software update, but can't be sure. This issue is somewhat important to me because I use WireTap Pro to schedule recording of a couple of radio shows, and need to leave the lid open so WTP can "wake" it to record.

  • My MACbook is connected to my iMAC using thunderbolt. How can I use my wireless keyboard with my MACBook with the lid OPEN?

It might work with the lid closed but I want to use the both screens. I try to detect the keyboard and the track pac on my Macbook pro but nothing is detected except my iMAC.

The easiest way is to copy the iTunes folder from your old PC to your MB (put it in the Music folder as a subfolder), along with the other valuable data on the old PC. Or restore it from a backup of your old PC. Then authorize iTunes on the MB to the same account you had on the PC. When you sync it will warn you that your content will be deleted, but it will be replaced with the same content from the MB. Before syncing you should also make sure there is at least one entry in iCal and Address book on the MB (assuming you sync to Outlook or equivalent on the PC) to assure that your contacts and calendar entries will move over correctly.
Al alternative that is less effective is to connect the iPhone to the MB without syncing, and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the iTunes File menu. This willl copy purchases music, videos and apps, but not ripped tracks from the iPhone to the MB.

  • HT1515 how does the airport express make my wifi signal stronger?

i am thinking about buying an airporst express because the wifi signal in my room is so slow. so i was wondering if i bought the device, how it would work and how is it conected to my main internet source?

First, please understand that the AirPort Express will only "extend" a wireless signal from another Apple router. It will not work with a device from another manufacturer for this purpose.
The Express "extends" a wireless signal by receiving, amplifying and re-broadcasting the original signal from the "main" Apple router. The result is a much stronger wireless signal with better wireless coverage. Although the Express can make the signal stronger, it cannot make it go faster. So, the Express needs to be located where it can receive a very strong signal from the main Apple router.

    Is the router to small?
Not necessarily, if you are using Facetime all the data goes through your WiFi router, your cable/DSL modem, your ISP and the internet to Apple's Facetime servers and then, in reverse, down to the Facetime recipient. If your ISP connection is too slow or there is excessive traffic on the internet you can have Facetime problems.
Most WiFi routers can handle this unless others in the house are also using WiFi at the same time. The problem may be your ISP connection or congestion on the internet, etc.

  • Dropped wifi signal on new macbook!!!

    hi all,
this is driving me absolutely bonkers. Brand new macbook (opened today, thank you santa!) and it cannot hold the wireless signal. Sometimes I will have internet for 5 minutes, sometimes less and sometimes 10-15 minutes (WOW!) but I have to turn airport on and off and back again. I can't be doing this the whole time.
the same network is fine for my old powerbook g4 running 10.3.9 and 2 other pc laptops and a desktop.
Do I have a dud laptop that needs replacing or is there something in snow leopard that doesn't just work? (as that would be a terrible mac fault)
    ARGHHHHHHHHH

    Merry Christmas misskool,
I have been messing with my D-Link DI-524 router settings today trying to solve my dropout problems. I had replaced it with a Time Capsule that died on me recently. Since my Time Capsule is in for repair, I dug out the D-link out to reconnect it so I could get my internet fix! The dropouts began immediately! Since everything else plays well with the D-Link, I started changing the settings one at a time. When I changed the beacon interval from 100 msec to 20 msec, the MacBook began to play nice. My iPhone seems to still work at this setting also. The only drawback seems to be the Wii needs at least a 40 msec setting which the MacBook doesn't like. Maybe this could help you also. I know it worked for me!

  • Time capsule wifi stops working with MacBooks, but nothing else

I have a newer model time capsule.  Lately, the wifi stops working intermittently on my macbook pro and the wife's macbook air.  While this is happening, our iphones and other peripherals have functional wifi.  This resolves if I reboot the time capsule.  Even more weird is that the 'guest network' on the time capsule will work fine while the main wifi network remains non-functional.
    Fairly annoyed, please help

It isn't strange at all.. it is a feature of Lion.. totally unstable useless networking.. particularly wireless.
I would be very surprised if you came back and told me you were on Snow still.
If Lion was installed by upgrade, worse and worse.. clean install seems to reduce if not remove the issues.
So ring Apple .. keep annoyed at their new vista class OS. Did you turn that off and on again??
I can suggest a few things..
Short wireless and network names.. no spaces.. pure alphanumeric. Different name for 5ghz to stop band swapping.
Lock wireless to on a/n -b/g
    Lock wireless channels.
Use wpa2 personal security only.. with 8-12 character passkey.. pure alphanumeric.
Set dhcp to very short lease time.. 30min.. might help Lion to remember the name of the TC.. otherwise it suffers from early onset dementia and alzheimer's.

  • Why does my 4th gen ipod touch not find the same wifi signals that my macbook does?

My macbook connects to btfon/btopenzone everytime,  but my ipod touch can only occaisonally recieve the signal and when it does will drop connection very often.

Also, the Mac, if relatively new, will see networks that operate on the 5 GHz N band. The iPod only sees 2.4 GHz networks..

  • Why Does Retina MacBook Pro (2012) Suddenly Hibernate With Lid Open?

I'd like to know why my Retina MacBook Pro (2012) at certain times suddenly go into Hibernate mode when I'm actively using it with the lid open and what I can do to prevent this.
I know this is hibernate because of what I see in the Console logs and the fact that I can't trigger a wake by using the keyboard/trackpad/mouse.  Only the power button causes it to wake up.
This usually happens when I wake it from sleep and plug it into an external monitor via HDMI to HDMI connection.   The lid is open and I use both displays.    This happens about 30 seconds to a minute after I wake from sleep.  At the time I'm not plugged into the power supply because I believe it's generally a good idea to let the batter drain and the recharge it.  The last time this happened it was about 35% to 40% charged.

Is it possible there's a bug either with the displayed power or how remaining power is detected?

  • Macbook Pro 13" 2010 wireless keyboard/mouse with lid open?

Can one use a wireless keyboard and/or mouse with a Macbook Pro when the lid is open?
I'm planning to purchase a 13" mbp soon and will have an external monitor attached. There will be times when typing on a wireless keyboard will be preferred. I know that you can use a wireless keyboard and mouse in clamshell mode, buy can't find any notes re: their use with the lid open.
    Thanks.
p.s. I've really appreciated reading the postings in the forums when researching my upcoming purchases.

Certainly. It should work just fine.

  • MacBook Pro will not sleep with lid open, but now solved, very odd.

I bought a 2.4 GHz MBP about a week ago, as soon as I got it home I reinstalled the OS and zero-out the drive. Everything appears to work perfect until I noticed that the MBP will not sleep with the lid open.
    But...
    Close the lid, it sleeps.
Select sleep from menu, it sleeps.
Let the battery drain down with lid open, laptop sleeps.
Whent thru painful troubleshooting process, reseting things, permissions, what is installed, running programs...blah blah blah, nothing no difference.
So, backup the drive using superduper to external firewire and reinstall all over again, just like i did when i first got home, except I did not let it connect to the internet. I went thru and setup everything then connected and performed each update, one at a time looking for what might hinder the sleep process.
And the result is a big fat zero.
Same install process as i did the first time, and same updates as the first time. But now the laptop sleeps perfectly.
Gotta love computers, so very consistant
Just my .02 input on this wacky issue.

Try trashing these 3 .plist preferences and reboot. Reset your Energy Saver preferences.
    HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.AutoWake.plist & com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Also, look at your system logs in your Console application and see what is causing the "wake event." It could be hardware-related. Do you have any external devices attached, such as a mouse or hub? I've seen Bluetooth problems with wireless BT mice.

  • My ipad cannot access Internet although I have strong wifi signal

My ipad cannot access Internet suddenly although I have strong wifi signal & my iphone, macbook and other laptops can connect to the wifi network. I tried to reset the network settings, connect to itunes, check the router. but it doesn't work. Can anyone help me please to solve this problem? Thank you very much

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Not Reliably Going To Sleep With Lid Open?

I've had my new MacBook Pro for a few days. I think it is absolutely brilliant. However, last night I left it running on battery with the lid open and returned to find the battery dead. It will go to sleep if you shut the lid or select sleep from the Apple menu.
I called Apple and they talked me through numerous procedures including resetting the SMC, PRAM, deleting various plists and finally a permissions repair on the disk. The latter seemed to make it work.
However, I've found this evening that it still does not reliably go to sleep with the lid open and I really can't work out why. It doesn't seem to be linked to a particular application. Sometimes even if I only have the finder running it will not go to sleep.
When it does work, the computer takes 2-3 minutes to go to sleep after the display sleeps.
I'm running Snow Leopard with all the available updates.
Please can anyone suggest what I might do next?

    Hi,
I've been struggling with same issue too, idle timer sleep just didn't work most of the time. I am a recent convert from Windows world and there were never issues with PC to go to sleep after idle timeout. With SL it was not so easy.
However, I found a reason (Or two actually) why it was not sleeping, after going through my applications and web pages one by one.
One of them is flash plugin in browsers, if I had any page open with flash, the computer would not sleep. Apparently flash somehow makes SL think it is not idle. Solution to this was to set up flash blockers to browsers. Which is not bad thing overall, flash is mostly adverts anyway on the pages I visit.
Other one was facebook, even with flash disabled. Something in their real-time updating of statuses again prevents sleeping. I tried disabling java and java script too, it might help but then facebook does not work at all. Solution is to always close facebook after using it. Not a really good one, it's easy to forget running.
    Hope this helps!

  • Sleep - no pulsing light with lid open.

I have been aware of this little teaser for some time - possibly from when SL was installed. The MBP does not appear to be going to sleep with the settings on Energy Saver. The screen dims correctly and the light comes on at the correct time - but it does not pulse. The wake from this state is instantaneous when the trackpad or any key is touched/pressed. I recall that with Leopard I had to press the space bar which was followed by that funny noise as it woke up - HD kicking in?. The noise no longer occurs. I presume that the above is not normal? It is as though the MBP is not "properly" asleep, just resting, for want of better terminology.
If I shut the lid, sleep is also instantaneous and the light pulses. The same is true when sleep is selected from the menu.
I have also noticed that with the lid open and the light on that there is sometimes heat to the left of the trackpad - but not always.
I hate to say this but, having gone through a rapid battery failure (posted somewhere in that long thread under Power and Batteries), whether this had something to do with that rapid battery failure? In the past, I rarely shut the lid, just walked away. (A new battery has been fitted).
It can be taken that throughout all of the above that the power was plugged in.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    TY

    Hi again TYDYsails,
These problem are almost always caused by third party hardware or software that polls the computer at regular intervals, interrupting the normal "timed" sleep process. They can sometimes be an absolute $%^& to resolve.
    Common culprits can include:
Hardware attached to the USB or FW ports , or less usually, a router or other device attached to an ethernet port.
Software that regularly scans things. I have seen many different things implicated here at different times. Usually the problem eventually gets sorted out with an update of the software, so be aware of anything that you are using of this type that might not be the "latest".
Virus checkers, hardware monitors that regularly "poll" the HD or other components, "Button press" software associated with scanners or all in one printers, adds on like "Growl" that provide alerts of one kind or another, programs or widgets that provide regular "updates" using the net ( TV program guides are a good example) and so forth.
A good way of narrowing down the field a bit (once you have disconnected any hardware that might be involved - even USB hubs with nothing else connected have been known to cause the problem in the past) is to take a look at the log files.
Fire up "Console" from your utilities folder and choose the "System" log in the left hand pane. Type in "sleep" in the search field and look for entries that roughly correspond with the time when the computer was meant to be dozing off. Now repeat the process by type in "wake" instead.
You should find something that is either preventing sleep or causing an immediate "wake" after sleep has occurred.
Another useful check can be to take a look at Activity monitor before and after the "non-sleep". You may notice an unexpected process running in the background that is simply continuing to run through the period concerned, simply preventing the set "sleep" interval from ever being reached.
Another possible cause can be network related. If you have your computer acting as a file server for other computers , then the normal "timed" sleep from energy saver won't occur as long as they remain connected. (Using the "sleep" command from the menu, or closing the lid will let it sleep in these situations, but timed sleep will not occur).
Finally you need to think about other sorts of "network" related activity. Active Bluetooth devices nearby can sometimes be a cause.
THis wouldn't have caused battery failure as such, but it would have reduced battery charge life substantially if you were often using your computer on battery and relying on the computer to go to sleep on the basis of times set in Energy saver. It could also have increased the risks / frequency of "sudden shutdowns" and the like, if the battery was already "going bad", by more rapidly lowering the amount of power available to meet transient power demands.
    Cheers
    Rod
